January 1st 1919
Wed. 1st __ Mother is feeling a little better again today. Simon Gale, the Hampden mailman, his
brother Luke and his son Joseph arrived here this afternoon. A meeting held in the schoolroom to
celebrate the winning of the Victoria Cross by Thos. Ricketts of Middle Arm at the age of 18 years
and to plan for a memorial to be erected in the church to the memory of Walter Jacobs who died in
England & to Thos. Ricketts who was killed with the Regiment in action in France; both these young
soldiers belonging to Westport.
I acted as chairman of the meeting. After speeches by Rev. C. Wood, H.L. Pearce & school master
Collins it was resolved that a committee be formed consisting of Rev. C. Wood, chairman, Andrew
Fudge, Darius Jacobs, H L Pearce and George Hurley to arrange for this matter.
Simon Jacobs & Mr. Collins were appointed collectors to solicit subscriptions.
The weather: fine & sunny during the greater part of the day; cloudy since 4pm; wind NW this am.

Thu. 2nd __ I have been busy in the shop attending the Hampden men who came here today. Mother
has been and is still, very sick again today! The S.S. Prospero left Little Bay coming North at
6:15pm.
The weather: moderate & thick this am; clearing and blowing a hurricane this pm & tonight. Wind
S.W. Bar at 9pm 29.22in. ther 33°.6.

Very heavy wind from the W.S.W tonight!


Fri. 3rd __ People here from Pumbley Cove, Perbeck Cove and Big Island awaiting the Prospero.
Mother is no better! The S.S. Prospero arrived at Coachmans Cove about 7:20pm and is apparently
remaining there tonight.
The weather: overcast this am; wind N.N.e. light E. wind with thick snow since 4pm.
Bar at 9 pm 29.69 in.; ther 18.8.

Sat. 4th __ The S.S. Prospero arrived from South at 3:45pm and left again at 4:30pm. We didn’t get
all our freight and it is supposed the Sagoria has the remainder. Dr. Grenfell was ashore to see
mother and pronounces her to be trouble by Gall stones which requires and operation but mother is
not willing to leave home for either St. Anthony or St. John’s this winter.
No important news these days!

Sun. 5th __ We are expecting the Sagona with freight left over by Prospero.
The weather: fine & sunny; rather cold & frosty. Strong NW winds; Bar at 9pm 29.83in; ther. 15°.2.

Mon 6th __ The S.S. Sagona left Coachmans Cove at 12:15pm and no sign at Seal Cove up to 8pm.
People here from Hauling Pt., Pumbley Cove, Big Isld. & Perbeck Cove. This being Epiphany
Mr. Wood held services at 11am & 3pm but I was unable to attend being too busy.
The weather: fine & sunny but frosty; wind north light; slob making fast; Bar 29.81in.; ther. 6°.0.

Tue. 7th __ No news of Sagona probably cut North. S.S. Prospero left St. Anthony coming south at
2pm. Wm. & James Jacobs packed 3 Brls. Of fish for me this pm.
Reports are that the Northern Slob is coming up. Coachmans Cove and Seal Cove reports no water to
be seen from these places.
The weather: splendid day; fine and sunny but rather cold; wind W.N.W. & W.

Wed. 8th __ The S.S. Prospero arrived from North at 1:45pm and left again going South at 2:30pm.
She reports The Sagona at Englee last night and Couche reports Sagona arrived there at 9pm.
Collins the school teacher keeps night-school for the older children who are unable to attend day
school.

Thu. 9th __ No report from the Sagona today; The Bretts and Ricketts here from Big Island today.
Wm. & James Jacobs were here sawing wood for the House. Mother a little better!

Fri. 10th __ Nothing being done here today. Couche reports this pm that the Sagona only left Crouse
at 1pm going North after being anchored at that place two days. The chances of her getting in White
Bay now grows very slim.
The weather: about 1 foot of snow fell last night; wind West since 9am. blowing hard since 4pm it
has been blowing an hurricane from the W.N.W. with a falling tempt.

Sat. 11th __ Another dull day. Wm. Gale here from Pumbley Cove this am. No report from the
Sagona today.
The weather: wind S.O.W this am; about 10:30am it veered West again and gradually worked up to
an hurricane and finally going North West with temperature falling from 24° to 0°.5 Bar at 9pm
28.80.

Mon. 13th The S.S. Sagona Capt. Arch Blandford arrived here about 11:45pm. Uncle Arch was
ashore to see mother. He is married to her sister.
The Sagona landed freight for us & Breen and left again at 1pm going direct to Tilt Cove.
The weather: stormy; blowing very hard from the W.N.W. & W. sky overcast.

Tue. 14th __ I was rather busy in the shop this am. Breen sent two men from Bear Cove to see to his
freight landed from S.S. Sagona yesty.
Mother is worse again today! She seems to think her end is drawing near!
I fixed up the first overland mail fro Steve to carry out tomorrow. Bar at 9pm 29.26in.

Wed. 15th __ I have been busy in the shop today. People here from Pumbley Cove, Perbeck Cove &
Big Island. No news today; Lines to St. John’s being out of order. Wm. Hewitt killed a seal this
afternoon. Mr. Wood was down to see mother this am. She seems a little better today.
The weather: mild & overcast; wind S.S.W. light. Bar at 9pm 29.12; ther 29°.3.

Thu. 16th __ Luke Gale here from Pumbley Cove this early pm. Not much being done here today. No
Prospects of receiving an overland mail this week as some of the carriers are not ready to take up
their work.

The weather: very dirty with thick snow. Wind S. light until 6pm clearing & colder with W.S.W.
wind tonight. Bar 28.97in. ther 20°.0.

Fri. 17th __ Not much being done today. Nobody here from outside. From Western Head up on this
side of White Bay the sob is packed thick.

Sat. 18th __ Mr. Wood held a Gramophone entertainment in the school room tonight. Mother seems

Sun. 19th __ Mr. Wood held his usual services today! I attended Evening prayers and stood God
father to George Hurleys young son who was christened Thomas being called after poor Thomas
Ricketts who was killed in France a few months ago.
Mother is not so well as she was yesterday. Elsie was sick last night so I was up until 2am to get
mothers hot drinks. I did not get up until after 12 (noon) today. Steve arrived home this pm.
The weather: wind East with snow this am partly clearing this pm. Bar at 9pm 29.13in. max temp.

Mon. 20th __ Not much being done today. Mother much the same. The Hewitts killed three seals
today. I was reading to Simon & Darius Jacobs tonight.

Tue. 21st __ The Hewitts killed two seals again today. Todays news reports that Thomas Ricketts
was decorated with the Victoria Cross by King George on Saturday. I fixed up a mail for Steve
tonight.

Wed 22nd __ People here from Hauling Point this early pm .This morning Samuel Hurley came
after some of Breens goods landed here from the SS Sagona last week . Steve reached Seal Cove at

Thu 23rd __ I have had a busy day, people here this am from Hampden, Pumbley Cove and Back
Cove to the shop besides Sam Hurley & Sons for another load of Breens goods . This afternoon I was
in the shop a good deal attending Westport people. Tonight I attended the committee meeting at the
parsonage re a memorial for Jacobs and Ricketts.
Mother no better and apparently fading fast .
The weather ---mild and overcast this early am wind SW nice 11am clearing and colder ;fine and
sunny this pm wind about west Bar at 9pm 29.69 ther 19.0° Max temp27.5 ° min temp 13.2° mean
temp 22.50°below average by 8.30.


Fri. 24th __ Mr. Wood was down here this morning to get a money order drawn for $25 for a
memoral tablet to the memory of Walter Jacobs and Thos. Ricketts. Mother is no better! Steve left
Baie Verte and returned to Seal Cove this morning. He is due here tomorrow. The PM Geul is going
to send a mail for the south side White Bay to Hampden via Howley. Wm. Jacobs will go to
Hampden for it.

January 25th 1919
Sat. 25th __ Mrs. Arthur Osborne sister of Wm. & Darius Jacobs died at Gold Cove Thursday
evening aged about 42 years. People here from Browns Cove & Big Island. Steve arrived home
tonight with all the mails from Bair Verte Seal Cove & Bear Cove besides Westport mail dispatched
past fortnight. Wm. Jacobs will carry them to Hampden Monday weather & ice permitting. I fixed
them up tonight.
The weather: very mild with rain this am. Overcast all day; wind about south. Bar 29.17in.

Mon. 27th __ Thanksgiving Day 1919! Office hours 9 to 10 am, 4 to 6 pm. Wm. & Darius Jacobs left
for Hampden this early am. Wm. Jacobs carried a mail to connect with Howley via Hampden
couriers. Mother is low today.
No important news! Me thinks this is the longest month I have ever spent!
The weather: overcast on the whole but with several sunny intervals; wind SW & W

Tue. 28th __ Not much being done here today. Mother has been a little better than usual. Mr. Wood
was down and held a private celebration with her at 11 am.
The weather: snowing this early am; fine & sunny from 10am to 3pm; overcast & cloudy since 3
pm. With occasional snow squalls; winds E & W light. Bar at 9pm 29.02.

Wed. 29th __ Three men here from Sops Island this early pm. Steve reached Seal Cove this pm.

great strikes involving 200 000 men & women in various parts of the United Kingdom.

Thu. 30th __ Wm. Gale here from Pumbley Cove for molasses this am. Wm & Darius Jacobs arrived
home from Hampden at 5pm. They brought no mail. The Hampden carriers arrived from Howley
station yesty pm bringing no mail the trains being off the track near the “topsails.” Steve at Baie
Verte awaiting the arrival of a mail from Burlington. Mother no better! I took a phto of Elsie, Millie
& George this pm.

Fri. 31st __ Steve left Baie Verte returning to Seal Cove without a mail this early pm.
People here from Big Island this early pm. This is the first January since we have been in White Bay
that the over land mails have failed to arrive.
Mother is seriously ill today. She cannot keep any food on her stomach.

Tue. 4th __ Mother is no so well again today. She had a weak turn at 2pm.
People here from Hampden & Pumbley Cove. Mr. Wood held a committee meeting re. The
memorial tonight at the Parsonage. I attended meeting.

Wed. 5th __ Old Lacey who is staying with cripple John Jacobs in Pound Cove was over here to the
shop this afternoon. Thomas Stuckless of Perbeck Cove was here this am. The delayed mails reached
Bair Verte this evening. Steve will leave Baie Verte with them tomorrow morning.
Wm. Jacobs and George Hurley leaves here for Hampden tomorrow being the second trip on the new
mail route.


Wed. 5th __ Mother has been nicely all day but has been vomiting since 7pm.
I toned-fixed a batch of 7 Solio prints this afternoon. Tonight I fixed up a mail for Wm. & George to
take to Hampden tomorrow.
The weather: mild & dirty; snow falling frequently during the day; wind NE & NW. Bar 28.80in.

Thu. 6th __ Steve reached Seal Cove from Baie Verte at 6:10pm with heavy mails. Wm. Jacobs and

early pm. John Pinkstone the line repairer arrived here from Seal Cove this early pm and left again
about 1pm. Mr. Wood is holding a Gramophone entertainment at the school room tonight. I did not
attend.

Fri. 7th __ Wm. Jacobs & Geo. Hurley arrived from Hampden with a mail this evening. It left St.

to Westport. Steve Jacobs left Seal Cove this am. But hasn’t arrived here yet.

Sat. 8th __ Wm. Jacobs & Co. who have been getting 10 000 turns of woods for us; started getting it

mails to take to Seal Cove etc. He leaves here tomorrow am. Joseph Stuckless here from Perbeck
Cove this am.

Tue. 11th __ A remarkable rough day; at least 4 feet of snow down and it is still falling at 9pm. Wind
NE & E blowing a hurricane.

Wed. 12th __ Wm. Jacobs and I were working fro two hours clearing paths to the stores etc. this am.
This has been the biggest fall of snow we have ever had here. About 4 or 5 ft. fell since Monday
night.
Steve Jacobs arrived at 9:30 pm with the South side White Bay mail.
The Bar was 28.40in at 2pm the lowest point I have yet recorded.

Fri. 14th __ Mr. Wood was down to see mother this morning. I have been troubled with a bad gum
boil the past few day. It broke today there by giving me relief.

Mon. 17th __ Mother has been vomiting quite a lot today and is very low tonight.
I wired the G.P.G. re. mail left at Howley and received reply that they have engaged with
a Mr. Porter to bring along over 400lbs. mail from Howley to Westport, probably leaving
today. Stephen Jacobs reached Seal Cove with the Fleur De Lys parcels this afternoon.
From today news it appears that there is a probability of the Great War being resumed.

Tue. 18th __ 17 years ago today Feb. 18th 1902 I began to keep a diary! Nothing of

Tue. 1st __ Having been up until 4:30 a.m. I don’t feel up to much today. People here
from Bear Cove & Wild Cove. Steve arrived with the Eastern mail at 2 p.m. Mother
wanted to be moved from her own bedroom to ours this a.m. which of course was done.
She is now in our bed and I will sleep in her’s tonight.

Thu. 17th __ Dear mother passed from this life to a better at 11L30 p.m. after being
unconscious for 12 hours. She was 59 years 11 months and 9 days old. Poor woman she
has had over 5 months of great suffering and is now at rest with her dear over departed
before.

mother tomorrow at 2 p.m.

Sat. 19th __ All that was mortal of poor mother was buried by Mr. Meaden at 3:30 p.m.

undertaker & Geo. Hurley & James Jacobs grave diggers. After the funeral the bearers etc.
came down and had tea before returning to their homes. Mr. Meaden who came here from Jackson’s Arm
this morning will hold Easter services here tomorrow.

Sat. 26th __ The past week I have been hindered from Recording daily so am going to try
to record the weeks news together. Sunday the 20th being East Day Rev. Mr. Meaden
held four services. I attending the first three including early celebration at 8 a.m. At 7:30
p.m. Mr. Meaden presided at a church meeting in the school room when the church
officers were elected. George Hurley was elected Peoples Warden while Mr. Meaden
appointed Thomas Hewitt Clergymans Warden fro 1919-20.
On Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Meaden held a meeting of the surviving members of
the Church of England Men’s Society when I was elected Vice President for the Westport
section of White Bay branch.
Nothing else worth recording occurring during the week.
Wm. & George went to Hampden Thursday morning and arrived back with
the mail at 5:30 p.m. today. Mr. Meaden went to Bear Cove this a.m. holding services
there tomorrow.
Sunday and Monday were fine the remainder of the week up to this early p.m. consisted
of Easterly wind & fog & mist with occasional heavy rains. Since noon today the wind
has been S.W. fine & clear.

Hampden this am. They report that Bouring Prospero is going to take up the Northern
Coastal mail service again this season. The Prospero is now on her way to St. John’s

The Peace Treaty was signed by Germany at 3:30 pm today. We celebrated by hoisting

Thu. 31st __ I left here for St. John’s by Prospero Saturday morning July 5th and after a
very pleasant trip reached there Wednesday morning the 9th . As I had quite a lot of work

arrived home yesterday. Elsie kept the Temperature & rain fall records during by
absence.

Mon. 4th __ The first of the British Empire Peace celebration Holidays I had two flags

Thu. 18th __ Thursday. Sept. 4th . Bert & I left for Jackson’s Arm in Mr. Woods motor
boat. We spend a good time taking Photos during the day and playing cards at Stanley
Budden’s at night. On Saturday, Sept. 6th, we returned home in Budden’s large motor
schooner accompanied by Mrs. Adams, Emma, Stanley & Mrs. Budden, John Bidden &
E.P. Combdon. Our visitors remained until Sunday p.m. When they returned by motor
schr. Mr. Meaden having called here Monday Sept. 8th I took Millie and left againg in the
mission boat for Jackson’s Arm to do some more Photography but having forgotten my
camera Mr. Meaden & I returned here Tuesday a.m. took and camera and was back to
Jackson’s Arm again in time for dinner. I spend five days at Jackson’s Arm took 18
photos and returned home in Mr. Meadens boat Saturday evening Sept. 13th. Prospero
from south Sunday a.m.

Thu. 18th __ The Prospero returned from north at 9:30 am Tuesday, leaving again for
South at 10:30am. Bert Rice left here for Nippers Hr. by Prospero. Yesterday Elsie left
here for Jackson’s Arm in Mr. Woods boat taking George with her and as Millie is still
there I am here alone at present. Mr. Meaden & Mr. Sparks were here in the mission boat
yesty am. I developed all my negs while at Jackson’s Arm and yesterday obtained 26
prints “velox” & “Solio”.
This day Alex Ricketts & James Jacobs spend a few hours sawing wood for the house. I
spent a short while fixing up my temp. record etc. Thos. & Joseph Stuckless here from
Perbeck Cove this p.m.
The telegraph operators intended striking for higher wages but the Govt. met their
demands and the strike is off. St. John operators would have walked out as also would
several of the outport officials. The strike was intended for this evening the Govt. being
given until 6pm to consider their demands.

The S.S. Prospero arrived from South early Monday 13th. Capt. A. Kean was here in the
Strathcova Wed. 15th. He held a political meeting in the schoolroom and left again at 11
am. The S.S. Prospero arrived back from north about 1 a.m. Thursday 16th . Sat. 18th the
Westport and Pound Cove men started getting sticks, Lumber etc. for repairing the Govt.
wharf. Nothing of importance transacted during the present week. Rainfall 22nd & 23rd

Fri. 24th __ Nobody here from outside. This afternoon Mr. Wood and I were off
examinging Eastern brook Pound Cove it being our intention to erect a lumber mill there
if we can get a licence from the Government. Eliza Jacobs cleaned up the office this
afternoon.
This is Nomination Day for the Geul. Election which takes place Nov. 3rd .

Wed. 29th __ Telegraph line interrupted between here and Seal Cove. S.S. Prospero left
Bear Cove and cut across to Jackson’s Arm this afternoon failing to call here although it
was smooth at the wharf with the N.N.E. wind.
The weather: after a heavy night of sleet & rain the wind veered Western finally going
N.N.E. blowing very hard but fine on the whole.

Fri. 31st __ Yesty & today fine & sunny but blowing strong N.N.W. Dick Martin arrived

appointed Deputy Returning Officer here.

Sun. 9th __ Very heavy sea with high tide this a.m. caused quite a lot of damage around
the Cove this a.m. Alex Ricketts had a stage partly wrecked; the public wharf was
damaged and several of the sticks which had been hauled up to repare the wharf was
swept away. We saved over 60 of them by hauling them up on the wharf.
I did not attend prayers today.

Brook. They took dinner with us and left again at 2:30 p.m. for Jackson’s Arm.

Govt. candidates elected by large majority: this makes count 12 Govt. 18 Opposition.
Mr. Wood pronounces Marthina to be suffering from Pneumonia and ordered her to bed

Tue. 18th __ The S.S. Prospero arrived at 7:30 a.m. Andrews of La Scie who has tured the
house we bought from Andrew Fudge arrived by Prospero. Mr. Morgan also arrived by
Prospero. Mr. Morgan also arrived from La Scie to go deer hunting from Hampden.
People here from Western Arm, Big Island and Perbeck Cove.
Baby not well today apparently troubled by the cold & cough.

Wed. 19th __ The new Government is getting to work to take it out of their political
opponents and now threaten and investigation into the expenditure of public monies
during the past ten years. Developments are likely to be fast & survivors during the next
few weeks. MacDonald the newly elected Goct. Member for St. Georges has severed his
connection with the Govt.

Wed. 31st __ One month and a half since writing here. During that period I have been to
St. John’s and back again. Mr. Wood, Thos. Hewitt & I left here by Prospero for St.
John’s Nov. 26th. We returned by Prospero Dec. 14th. We had a very stormy voyage and
during our absence the shed on the Govt. Wharf was completely destroyed by a big
hurricane of W.N.W. wind. This late fall has been the worse I ever saw for heavy storms
of wind and rough water. The S.S. Seal was sent on a special trip to get good into White
Bay. She arrived at Western Arm on the 18th during an extremely cold period. On the
20th the Ther. Registered 10 below zero the coldest Dec. temp. I ever recorded. The Bay
became filled with slob ice. On the 21st the Seal arrived here from Jackson’s Arm having
to cut her way thru heavy slob ice nearly all the way. She landed our freight and left
again for J. Arm.
Western Arm mill is being pushed and they have over 100 men cutting logs this winter.
The Seal landed a big stock there recently. Wild Cove is well settled this winter, mostly
by La Scie people logging there.
