Thu. 1st __ Here begins 1920! Our boy George H. Pearce is 3 years old today. My leg is
giving my a lot of trouble lately. I believe it is rising again.
Office hours today 9 to 10 am & 5 to 6 pm.
White Bay again full of slob ice.
Nothing being done here today, dull times!
The weather: splendid day; fine & sunny; mod. W.N.W. wind. About 7 inches of new
snow fell yesterday & last night.
3 PM: Bar 29.71; ther. 17°.0; Rel. Hum. 80.0%; Bar at 9 pm 29.71.

Fri. 2nd __ I did not get up until 2 p.m. my leg is bad and apparently rising.
Elsie attended the office today.

Mon. 12th __ I have been laid up since last Sunday with my leg. It rose & broke and is not
getting on o.k. although I have not been off the front bridge yet. Elsie attended the office
shop & thermometer while I was laid off.
Wm. Jacobs & Geo. Hurley left here with a mail for Hampden last Thursday returning
Saturday but without a Southern mail. The Prospero is at Tilt Cove working north. The
weather has been fairly seasonable recently.

Tue. 13th __ I got out to the office today first time since New Years day.

My leg is healing fast and I hope to be able to go about anywhere by end of week.

Thu. 15th __ The S.S. Prospero was at Seal Cove this a.m. Western Arm this afternoon

Wm. Jacobs & Geo. Hurley left here this a.m. on their 2nd mail trip to Hampden.
People here from Perbeck Cove, Pumbley Cove & Wild Cove.
The weather: fairly mild; wind N.E. dull with occasional snow storms.

Fri. 16th __ Not much being done here today. My leg is getting better but I have not

Today news record that the railway is blocked so there is no prospect of getting a mail
this week. Wm. & George left here for Hampden this a.m. Dawes men have struck work
at Western Arm owing to expensive prices for dry goods.

Mon. 26th __ Messrs. Winsor & Batstone here on horse & slide from Western Arm this

Tue. 27th __ George Hurley went to Bear Cove with our horse and returned with three

arrived here at 6 pm from Seal Cove with a mail for us. My leg is troubling me quite a lot
last night but it seems better today.

They arrived at Hampden Monday with a mail from Howley.

Tue. 10th __ Some of the Westport men were hauling wood for the Parson today. The
Hewitts killed 4 seals. Some of the small boys killed a young white-coat harp seal near
Western Head. It was alive and crawling ashore (or towards the shore).

The line which was only fixed up yesterday has been working very badly today.

Sat. 21st __ Wm. Jacobs & I took our horse this a.m. and went to Wild Cove with the

Pumbley Cove & Wild Cove.
The weather: blowing hard West with snow squalls this a.m.; clearer this p.m. but sky

Tues. 6th __ Yesterday we were busy getting ready for a dance which started at 8 p.m. at
Simon Jacobs summer house. It was a very enjoyable affair and we kept it up until 5 a.m.
this morning. I danced in seven sets. Elsie had several dances also. There were people
from Western Arm, Perbeck Cove, Big Island & Pumbley Cove there. Alex Ricketts
launched his house from the bottom of the Cove across the ice to Bear Path on the other
side today. Jack Adams and Miss Whalen returned to Wild Cove this p.m. Yesty was a

Tue. 25th__ I have been too busy to keep my diary posted lately. Last week I had my seals
skinned. The fat filled 48 cakes and we had 295 skins besides 27 gals. Of oil. Wednesday
evening John Adams & I went to Jackson’s Arm in punt for empty casks, thinking to get
back in motor boat next morning we sent the men who rowed us over back home. We
failed to get a motor boat the next morning which proved to be a dirty day with S.E. wind
consequently the ice filled in that evening and we were delayed until Sunday.
While at Jackson’s Arm Jack Adams & I visited the three saw mills being
operated there. Mr. John Ford & sons brought us back to Westport Sunday afternoon.
Emma Adams who had been here since Tuesday last returned to Jackson’s Arm with John
Ford. Yesterday Lot & Ephsam Combdon brought over the empty casks I required to
finish securing my fat and We finished work on the seals this afternoon. Mr & Mrs.
Meaden were here in the mission motor boat & returned to Jackson’s Arm today. Lot
Combdon was here this p.m. for a mail which Simon Gale brought from Hampden
yesterday. The S.S. Prospero on her first trip North is ice bound at Seldom-Come-By.
With the exception of Thursday we have had splendid weather; fine, warm & sunny;
prevailing winds S.W. & W.

Wed. 26th__ James Rice son of Thomas Rice of Bear Cove was killed or drowned at
Western Arm while log driving today. Wild Cove people including John Adams here in
motor boat this early p.m. Jack walked back to Wild Cove this evening after tea. Mrs.
Wells is here to the house spending a few days with Elsie before she leaves by Prospero.

Tue. 1st__ The S.S. Prospero had to return from Cape St. John being unable to get around

accompanied by men who came to get medicine for the sick there. They were unable to
get in the Cove and landed near the light-house. They were unable to return, owing to the
ice tightening on this shore, until after 6 p.m. this evening.

Thu. 15th__ Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & today the weather has been very warm with

S.W. winds & fine weather. The S.S. Prospero arrived from South Monday evening. I
have been busy since then. Tuesday & Yesterday was engaged principally in taking
salmon and getting them ready for shipment to St. John’s by Prospero. Tuesday was
Elsie’s birthday, she then completed her 27th year. After tea on that day her father, mother
& brother came here from Jackson’s Arm they brought Millie with them. I having
received an important message for Edward Dawe at Western Arm got Sydney & his father
underway to take it to Western Arm. Elsie her mother & myself went with them returning
about 1 a.m. yesty morning. Yesty p.m. Dolph Batstone, his wife, Ed. Dawe & Sam
Ways came here from Western Arm. Dawe remained here to await the Prospero the
others returned to Western Arm about 10 p.m. The S.S. Prospero arrived here from North
about 11 a.m. She took our salmon etc. and left again at 12:30 p.m. I shipped 25 tee
salmon in 38 herring Brls and 14 brls Herring by Prospero.
I have had a busy life lately but I hope things will ease down somewhat for a

Arm she was unable to leave home as Emma was to keep home while Elsie was away.

arrived here again at 6:30 p.m. At 8:30 p.m. Thos. Hewitt having to Express a message
to Stan Budden from Norris at Coachman’s Cove, Elsie & I went to Jackson’s Arm with
them in Touis motor boat. We spent quite a time at Jackson’s Arm and arrived home at 2
a.m. Sunday a.m.

by her and went to Chouse Brook returning about 11 p.m. We expect to start a lumber
mill at Chouse Brook if we can get a license from the Government.

Sun. 1st__ About 10:30 a.m. Stan, John, Emma & I left here for Western Arm in Buddens

women to return to Jackson’s Arm so they remained here tonight.

Fri. 6th__ Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. the S.S. Prospero arrived here from South. I left
by her for Jackson’s Arm to attend Ephriam Combdon’s wedding which took place at
4:30 p.m. that day. Before the wedding I was up the Arm and walked into Jackson’s Arm
pond and saw Budden’s new steam mill working.
About midnight we had a dance in Thomas Ford’s new house. Twas 4 a.m. Thursday
when the dance being ended I “turned in” for a nap. I was up again at 7:30 a.m. and Lot
Combdon brought Emma & I to Westport about 11 a.m. when we reached here.
The S.S. Prospero arrived here from North at 8:00 a.m. & left again 8:20 a.m. today.
Splendid weather since Tuesday, every day fine, warm & sunny with S.W. winds.
Thursday night Rev. Meaden, Mrs. Meaden & Mrs. Adams were here in the mission boat
returning about 11 p.m.

Mon. 23rd__ Since Friday 13th I have been to Jackson’s Arm having gone there Thursday
night the 12th inst. In Budden big motor boat. I returned here Friday morning the 13th with
Pearce Ford, Elsie returning with us. That p.m. Emma & I returned to Jackson’s Arm
with Pearce Ford. I came here again Sunday the 15th in Budden big motor boat returning
again that same p.m. and remained at Jackson’s Arm until Friday the 20th when I
returning here in Budden’s boat, they being on their way to Western Arm. I had a nice
Holiday and put in some good times playing “Auction Forty-fives” at Stan Budden’s &
John Fords while at Jackson’s Arm. I got 11 negs. Cannot write any details of my visit
owing to lack of time.

Tue. 24th__ Not much being done here today. Messrs Samways & Batstone here from
Western Arm this afternoon. I took 3 ½ qlt of fish from Andrew Rice of Bear Cove this

Wed. 8th__ A General Holiday! No office hours. Rev. Mr. & Mrs. Meaden & Emma

motor boat with Mr. Chamberlain aboard coming up to Westport. They finding I was
aboard put about and returned to Western Arm racing us back; but Mr. Meaden boat keep
up the lead and even gained at least two lengths on the run. We left Western Arm at 5
p.m. and reached here again at 5:58 p.m. The Jackson’s Arm party returned again at 7 p.m.
Since I returned from Western Arm I have taken over 3 qlt of fish & 123 lb of
Hay from the Ricketts & Bretts of Big Island.
While at Western Arm I met a second sounsin of mine Arthur Scott who is down here
with the Botwood men on the pulp-wood racket for the A.N.D. Co.

returning south. From Lewisport where she taken supplies for White Bay & Conche she
will proceed direct to Conche calling at ports shipped and landing freight loaded at
Lewisport for these ports. Messrs Dawe, have large supplies for Western Arm for pulp
wood cutting this winter.

Thu. 30th__ We have been spending a good old Xmas tide. Three dances and a good time
generally. On Xmas Eve Sid Adams & Robert Earl my brother-in-laws arrived here in
motor boat from Jackson’s Arm. The remained here until Tuesday morning the 28th inst
leaving while we were in the midst of a big dance in the school room. Before the last
dance on the 27th there was a tea held by the “Women’s Association” There was a dance
at Thos. Hewitts on Xmas Eve and another in our kitchen on Xmas night the third and last
being held on Monday night and not finished until 5 a.m. Tuesday morning. Elsie was
unable to remain long on Monday night have a heavy cold herself & little maud being ill.
I put in a good time each dance!
Yesterday afternoon the S.S. Prospero arrived from South. The weather has
been very dirty since & including Xmas eve. Banks of snow has fallen and quite a winters
snow fall lies on the ground. The weather has been mild until today.
