I received a letter from the Deputy Minister of justice informing me that I have no jurisdiction to try the Burton-Hewitt assault case at Jackson’s Arm and that I should advise Mrs. Burton to apply to the nearest stationed magistrate. Tonight I wrote Mrs Burton advising her to apply to Mr Duggan at La Scie. I am glad to be clear of this case as it is likely to be a somewhat critical one . No important news by mail or wire tonight. Steve leaves here tomorrow morning for Baie Verte. The southern mail left Millertown Junction at 3.30 pm. Tomorrow I have to try a case of debt. Breen verses Gillham. This is my first case since my appointment as a J.P .People here from Wild cove this am. Steve & Dick were sawing wood for us yesterday pm. and this afternoon. The weather –changeable. WED 20TH __ Quite a busy day at 11 am I opened court on the debt case of Breen & Gillham, after hearing Gillham I pronounced judgement to the effect that Gillham was to pay the debt in installments of 10.00 per month beginning May1st. Breen took dinner with us and left for home at 3.30pm. Mr. Meaden was here . to the house this afternoon. The British aeroplanes are doing good work bombing German towns lately. The sealers are not doing very well yet. The Terra Nova has 4000,Eagle 6000. Fri. 22nd __ The big German offensive started yesterday and the biggest battle in the World’s History rages on the Western front today. Walter Jacobs was wounded in battle according to a telegram received by Luke from the minister of militia St .Johns’ this afternoon. George Rice of Wild Cove was here looking for government relief this evening. People here from Seal Cove this afternoon. Mr Meaden left for Bear Cove today. Cyril & Essau Jacobs killed two seals and James Hewitt one today. The weather fine and sunny this am and early pm ,overcast since 4.30 pm. Wind N.E. The drive seems to be slowing down somewhat but I am of the opinion that the allies will lose all the ground gained by them during the past two years. On the Western front. The French having to give ground to keep in contact with the British. Dick Martin has been here all day working at odd jobs .The Hewitts killed a seal this morning. I printed and fixed a batch of 8 solo prints from the negs .of Cyril Jacobs & John Gale this am & pm. William Jacobs left here at 8am and reached Baie Verte at 6.30 pm quite a record I should say. No important war news except that the British have won an important victory over the Turks in Wesopslavia. Taking 3,000 prisoners and wiping out the Turkish army there.. The big German drive gradually dropping out after taking 25 miles. of front in places or more than the allies gained during the past two years but with the allied lines unbroken. The Germans report having captured 70,000 prisoners and 1000 cannons since their drive started. They gained 37 miles in places and are only 53 miles from Paris. The Italians are expecting a big Austrian drive shortly, if so I expect they will round up the Italians and eventually enter Rome. April bids fair to be a critical month for the Enteutc?? Allies. Sat 27th ----- The Germans gained an important victory yesterday by capturing an important hill which is described as the key to the Ypres Salient and which the British have been unable to recapture . It is feared Ypres will have to be abandoned and the situation is regarded by the British newpapers as very serious as it is feared the German will eventually obtain possession of the French Channel seaports there by increasing the strain on the British communications . Simon Gale the Hampden mailman accompanied by Arch Osborne arrived here this pm.. Steve left Seal Cove at 6 or 7 this am. But has not arrived yet 9.30 pm. Full of ice up this way again, none below Hauling Pt. July 3rd 1918 Wed. 3rd __ On the 2nd of June I left for St. Johns by S.S. Prospero. We arrived St. John Thursday evening June 6th, and found that the Prospero was to be taken off the northern Coastal route to run to Sydney and New York. We were held up at St. Johns from June 6trh to June 22nd before they for another ship, the S.S. Seal, to take up he Northern service. Even then there is no prospect of a regular service. E. W. Breen of Bear Cove also went to St. Johns by Prospero. We left St. Johns Saturday, June 22nd, and after a pleasant trip reached home Thursday night – June 27th . I then struck a very busy period as Herring had been very plentiful so that our people had collected over 300 brls. Which we decided to ship by S. S. Seal on her return from North. She got back Sunday night – June 30th and it took 9 hours to ship 450lbs of herring 343 brl. Being ours, the remainder belonging to different other people. From todays war news it appears that during last week the allies captured 100,000 prisoners including 50,000 in Palestine and nearly 40,000 on the Western front during the past three days. The Allies in France are now attacking and smashing the Hindenburg line over a fifty mile front. The British have taken over 13,000 prisoners in France since Friday morning. October 1st 1918 Tue. 1st __ Bulgaria has signed an agreement to give up all Greek & Serbian territory occupied by her troops, to give up all railroads and to demobilize her armies. Bulgaria will by “occupied” by British, French & Italian troops. So the central powers are dropping out of the war one by one. Turkey by Bulgaria’s action is cut off from Germany & Austria through the Balkans and it is thought will soon have to sue for peace. The Allies have advanced several miles in Belgian and are making good progress else-where on the Western front. Mon. 30th __ The Lloyd George Govt. has been returned to power in England by a majority of 280 over all other parties. It is reported that posters has been set up in Ireland declaring that a Republic has com einto being there. Guess there will be troble for certain parties in that country if they provoke the Empire too much. Mr. Woods meeting has been postponed owing to the unsettled weather. This year which began with the Germans in their full strength ends with The Emperor an exile from his country. The Allies in occupation of a goodly portion of German territory after practically an unconditional surrender on their part; with an honourable and glourious peace in sight. All Germany’s Allies surrendered before herself and are all being treated alike. The Allied Armies are occupying their territories while their Navies are seized. Nov. 11th will long be remembered as the most glourious day in history as on that day the great German meanace was finally removed from the worlds life to be succeeded we hope by a bright and peaceful future. God bless 1919 making it the beginning of a new aeria. Up to July 18th the Germans were making good progress in their attempted advance on Paris but from that date they were driven back with great speed and with heavey losses until the were practically cleared out of France and from a goodly portion of Belgium.
