Jan 1st, 1911 Sunday No prayers here today. The Parson is at Bear Cove. I with Alex Huett and Ludlow, the Big Island schoolteacher were off for a walk this pm. we went in by Eastern Brook and came back and visited Simon Jacobs’ tilt. I have had a fire in the office all day. The weather ; a fine, sunny day although cold and frosty; wind West. Max temp 13.8°; min temp 0.2°; mean temp 9.35°. Jan 2nd, 1911 Monday We have had a half holiday from the telegraph office. hours in office from 9 to 10 am and from 4 to 6 pm. The young people had a dance at Robert Jacobs’ tonight. George Hurley asked me over so I went to look at them dancing. I had several invitations to take the floor for a dance but declined. there were several men and girls from Purbeck’s and Pumbly Cove present. Several of the married people took the floor including Alex and Mrs. Huett. I left and returned home at 8.45 pm. The weather : dull and cloudy all the am; snowing this pm; raining tonight; wind South. Max temp 31°; min temp 13.1°; mean temp 28.5°. Jan 3rd, 1911 Tuesday They kept up the dance until 6 am this morning. Mr. Wood returned home from bear Cove this pm. Eliakim Rice brought him up. The Prospero is now at Tilt Cove. Jan 4th, 1911 Wednesday The Prospero left Seal Cove 3.30 pm for Bear Cove. We received our mail by George Rice at 8.30 pm. Not much being done today. The weather : raining although temperature below freezing this am; finer but still cloudy this pm; wind West. Max temp 39°; min temp 25°; mean temp 27.75°. Jan 5th, 1910 Thursday I have been busy reading the newspapers and about the mail today. The roads are covered with ice now making thee walking very slippery. George Rice arrived with the Bear Cove mail for the Prospero tonight. The weather : cloudy all day; not much falling weather; very moderate; fairly cold this am when the day was slobbed over; getting milder all day; light South winds. Jan 6th, 1911 Friday I went in on the marsh inside Winter Tilts skating on the flashits this pm when George Rice came in and told me the Prospero was coming across the Bay. She arrived about 3.50 and came in by the wharf to land the freight. She discharged and was off again at 4.20 pm. Walter Combden arrived from Jackson’s arm to learn telegraphy from me this winter. The weather : this ahs been a cold blustery day; blowing a gale from the North West; sunny at intervals; snow squalls at times. Max temp 27.5°; min temp 16°; mean temp 19.75°. Jan 7th, 1911 Saturday Combden was sworn in and took his first lesson in telegraphy this morning. He and I were off skating on Brown Marsh this pm. I got along fine skating. It is 15 years since I put a skate on my foot. People here from Sops Island. The Bay was slobbed over this am but tis not strong. The weather : a splendid day; fine and sunny; moderate. The weather : snowing all day; but not much wind; fairly mild for a winter day. Max temp 25°; min temp 11.2°; mean temp 23.65°. Jan 9th, 1911 Monday Not much being done today. William Jacobs has been sawing wood for us today. I toned and fixed a batch of 7 P.C.P. prints this afternoon. I spend two hours every morning teaching Combden telegraphy. Mr. Wood was here to the house this afternoon. The weather : cloudy all day; no falling weather however; wind East. Max temp 31.6°; min temp 22.5°; mean temp 25.1°. Jan 10th, 1911 Tuesday I have been getting the first overland mail ready to start in the morning. Steve came after it at 6 pm. Mr. Wood was down here to the house this afternoon to get Father and I to join the overseas club for the upholding of Patriotism amongst British Subjects throughout the Empire. Both Father and I joined and I got Darius Jacobs and Walter Combden to join also. I had a spell reading to Simon and William Jacobs tonight. My pupil is getting on fine with telegraphy. Jan 11th, 1911 Wednesday Steve Jacobs left here with the mail this morning. He reached Baie Verte at 7 pm. the North West Arm mailmen hadn’t arrived at Baie Verte at 9 pm. People here from Back Cove this am. I obtained 5 first rate gaslight prints tonight. Mother is ill with a pain in her side this pm. The weather : cloudy on the whole all day; fairly mild; wind South West. Max temp 32.6in temp 22°; mean temp 29°. Jan 12th, 1911 Thursday People here from Pumbly Cove. Steve left Seal Cove at 2.30 pm coming this way with the first overland mail. It is now 9 pm and he hasn’t arrived yet. This pm I was off on a photographic hunt. I went up to the Parsonage and took two views of the Parsonage for Mr. Wood. Afterwards, Combden and I went in around the tilts and got Joe Huett to take our photo and I took a group consisting of Mrs. Thomas Jacobs, Joe Huett, Charlotte Huett and Walter Combden. I haven’t developed the two of the Parsonage yet but the other two I have and they aren’t bad. The weather : cloudy during early am; fine and sunny on the whole since 11.30 am; wind North West. Jan 13th, 1911 Friday Stephen Jacobs arrive here with the mail at 6.10 pm; not a very large mail this time however. The weather : dull all day; snowing tonight; wind South West. Max temp 25.5°; min temp 4.8° mean temp 15.85°. Jan 14th, 1911 Saturday I toned and fixed a batch of 7 P.C.CP. prints and postcards this pm. Afterwards I went up to the Parsonage with the proofs of the photos of the Parsonage which I took Thursday. he wants ½ dozen of them. Tonight, I printed some gaslight prints but with indifferent success. The Bay is now full of ‘ made’ slob. The weather : a splendid morning and early pm. Jan 15th, 1911 Sunday Parson Wood held his three usual service. Mother and I attended all of them. I was down to Andrew Fudge’s house for a time after the 3.30 pm service. Jan 16th, 1911 Monday have been busy about the mail etc. today. people here from Pumbly Cove. Steve came for the mail tonight. Jan 17th, 1911 Tuesday Nothing being done today. Today has been the coldest day since Feb 6th, 1904 which had a mean temperature of 11° below zero. The minimum temperature is the lowest since Jan 26th 1909 when it was 16.5° below zero. The weather : very cold; sky thick with vapour; blowing strong from the North. Max temp -1.7°; min temp -13°; mean temp -10.25°. Jan 18th, 1911 Wednesday Father has had Robert and James Jacobs Jr. and Samuel Hurley sawing wood today. Young Ludlow, the teacher and William Ricketts walked here on the ice from Big Island this afternoon. Steve who left here with the mail yesterday arrived at Baie Verte this am. This is a long spurt of zero weather; the temperature has been below zero since 4.30 pm Monday. Now 9 pm, it is – 3.7°. The weather : a fine sunny day; but very cold’ wind North North West. Max temp –3.7°; min temp -8°; mean temp -5.75°. Jan 19th, 1911 Thursday Mother is very sick today. She has been in bed all day. At 3 pm this afternoon the line became interrupted between Baie Verte and North West Arm. The Prospero left Nippers Harbor this morning. She passed La Scie and Coachman’s Cove, cut through the ice driving out White Bay, made Cat Arm on the other side of the Bay and steamed to Jackson’s Arm. She arrived here at 9.35 pm and left again for Seal Cove at 10 pm. Last evening, the Bay was solid with ‘made’ ice, this evening it’s all gone well above the Cove. The weather : blowing hard all day from the South West. Temperature rising all day; sunny on the whole; cloudy this pm. Max temp 23.8°; min temp -3.7° mean temp -17.75°. Jan 20th, 1911 Friday Steve Jacobs arrived with the overland mail this am. He lost the lock from the mail bag between Hauling Point and Seal Cove going. A small overland mail, but a large mail came by the Prospero last night. The Prospero left Seal Cove at 6 am going North directly to Griquet. I had a fine lot of books come by the Prospero to read to Simon and Bill night time. The weather : quite a lot of snow fell last night or this early am; it was snowing until 10 am with a South West wind, then the wind came from the North West; it became fine overhead but very rough and cold, the snow drifting furiously, and from 27° at 9am the temperature fell to 5° at 4 pm and finally to -2° at 9 pm. Max temp 28.5°; min temp -3°; mean temp 12.5°. Jan 21st, 1911 Saturday The line to North West Arm came okay at 3.30 pm this afternoon. I toned a batch of 6 P.C.P. prints this pm. At 6 pm the Jackson’s Arm mailmen arrived with their mail. Ryder the Bear Cove schoolteacher was here this afternoon. The weather : cloudy after 11 am; blowing strong from the South West; snow squalls tonight with rising temperature. Max temp 29.7°; min temp -3.7°; mean temp 15.75°. Father and I attended the morning and 3.30 pm services; but we didn’t attend tonight. Mother wasn’t quite well enough to go to Church today. After 3.30 pm, I took a walk as far as Pound Hill and came back and went into William Jacobs’ for an hour. Combden and Thomas Huett went to Big Island on a visit this early am. Jan 23rd, 1911 Monday I have been busy about the mail all day. Not much doing. The men are busy sawing lumber for us. Robert Jacobs cut his foot in the woods today. Jan 24th, 1911 Tuesday Steve left here with mail this am and reached Seal Cove about 3 pm. Thomas Huett and George Hurley killed a seal this morning. Combden and I took a walk across the ice to the other side of the Cove this afternoon. People here from Big Island and Sops Island. The weather : fine and sunny; cold; wind South West. Jan 25th, 1911 Wednesday It was inclined to be mild last night and the early am, but the wind changed from South West to North West and it began to get cold so fast that the therm dropped from 22° at 9 am to 5° at 1 pm and now at 9 pm it is -1.5°. Samuel Hurley and James Jacobs were here sawing wood for the house today. The weather : sky thick all day on the whole; cold and windy. Max temp 25.2°; min temp -2.0°; mean temp 10.25°. Jan 26th, 1911 Thursday Steve reached Seal Cove on the return trip this pm. He is remaining there tonight. not much being done today. John and Peter Osmond from Hampden here this am. Jan 27th, 1911 Friday Steve arrived with the mail at 4 pm. not much news by mail. Combden and I took a walk as far as Pound Hill this afternoon. by this mail, Aggie Jackman sent me some of her photos to look at. Some of them are very good. Most of them were taken by Mr. K. Mitchell, her intended. The weather : fine and sunny but cold and frosty; wind West. Max temp 6°; min temp -6.7°; mean temp -0.75°. Jan 28th, 1911 Saturday At noon, the Jackson’s arm mailmen arrived. Miss Adams, late operator at J.C. (Coachman’s Cove) now at Jackson’s Arm sent me her combinations Key and Sounder to adjust for her. I tried it with one cell but it wouldn’t work so I then connected it with two cells and it is now working okay. James Ludlow, Big Island’s teacher, came down with the Jackson’s Arm mailmen. This afternoon, Ludlow, Combden and I took a walk to Pound Cove where we took to the ice and walked up around outside. It was just grand on the ice. Simon and Thomas Jacobs killed an old harp seal this am. People here from Seal Cove, Big Island and Hampden. Mr. Wood went to Bear Cove this afternoon to hold prayers there tomorrow. Ludlow is going to hold prayers here tomorrow. Here endeth another cold week. Jan 30th, 1911 Monday O have been busy about my mail all day. So I have nothing to write about. People here from Hauling Point. The mail was closed tonight. Steve starts with it in the am. The snow which fell Sunday and yesterday has been drifting all day. Steve didn’t reach Seal Cove today. Except he put up at Middle Arm for tonight. I went down to Andrew Fudge’s to take him down some Seltona printing paper for him to obtain some prints from a negative which Edgar left with him last Fall. Steve left with the mail this am. He reached Seal Cove about 4.30 pm and left for Baie Verte at 6 pm. The weather : fine and sunny; blowing a fresh breeze from the West North West all day. Feb 13th, 1911 Monday People here from Hampden. Parson Wood arrived home from the Bay this pm. He bought two dogs whilst up there. After GOOD NIGHT, Walter and I were riding on Parsonage Hill tonight. It was good sport of its kind. The weather : another splendid day! Fine and sunny; it was very frosty last night; moderate. Feb 24th, 1911 Friday Steve arrived this am about 10.30 with the mail. I received two letters, one from Jack Jacobs at Bishop’s Falls and one from Aggie Jackman at Seal Cove. Not much news by mail. It doesn’t seem to heal very fast. Sam Hurley, Robert Jacobs and Jim Jacobs have been hauling wood for us today. The Jackson’s Arm mailmen arrived at 8.30 am leaving again about 10 am. There is but little ice in Green Bay but at Coachman’s Cove it is all ice as far as they can see. Apr 22nd, 1911 Saturday At 9.30 am, the Jackson’s Arm mailmen arrive here with their mail. They walked across on the ice. I took part in a game of cricket after tea tonight. It was splendid fun, but it was too late when I found out they were playing so I only got one good inning. Steve reached Baie Verte this am. Thomas Huett, Thomas Ricketts and I were playing cricket this afternoon. George Hurley is laid up. He drove a knot into his foot in the woods yesterday. Father attended prayers tonight. The weather : rather cloudy on the whole but fine and sunny spells this pm; wind West South West. The ice is slowly moving out the Bay. Bill Huett, James Jacobs, Thomas Ricketts and I played Alex Ricketts, Thomas Huett, Joe Huett and Walter Jacobs beating them by 61 runs. We scored 83, they only 22. Steve left Baie Verte with the mail at 2 pm. He is staying at Seal Cove tonight. the ice has been moving out the Bay today; blowing strong from the South West.
