Jan 1st, 1910 Saturday
This first day of 1910 has been uneventful, rather. James Adams in Pafford’s schooner boat, put
in here to dispatch a telegram this afternoon. We operators have had a kind of holiday today. We
have had to open our offices for business from 9 to 10 am and from 5 to 6 pm. The Old Parson
held service at 11 am and at 7 pm. Father attended morning prayers but none of us attended
evening prayers. I must here record that this Xmas tide has been a very dull one. The dullest I
have ever spent I think. I wish my sore finger would get better so that I could get about photo
work etc. The line came okay between Bishop’s Falls and St. John’s this am. I wonder what this
record will be like before it is ended. my late record began in November 1908 and I ended it
yesterday December 31st 1909. It records a lot of foolery and since June it has been the record of
a lonely dissatisfied man. I hope 1910 will pan out better however. I had a long chat with Joe
Huett who came to the office to go in th4 shop to get tobacco for Robert Jacobs this morning.
He reports that some of our Western Cove and Pound Cove men have seen a ghost on Pound Hill
lately. I guess it is time to see about getting to bed. I must try to strengthen my determination
during this present year. I see there is nothing makes others respect one like letting them see that
one has a temper and will of one’s own. But on the other hand, I must strive to keep my violent
temper from obtaining the mastery of my will and reason. I know that my temper is very bad
and that I often lose control of it. The weather : fine and sunny on the whole this am; wind
South West; stormy and cloudy on the whole, but with sunny intervals this pm; wind North
West. Rainfall : 0.20 in. Max temp 26°; min temp 20°; mean temp 21.35°. Weekly temperature
record : highest 32.5° on the 27th ultimo; lowest 16.8° on the 30th ultimo; range 15.7°; highest
min temp 26.5° on the 27th and 28th ultimo; lowest Max temp 26° on the 1st instant; highest mean
temp 29.75° on the 27th ultimo; lowest mean temp 21.35° on the 1st instant; mean Max temp
29.97°; mean min temp 22.43°; mean range of temp 7.54°; mean temp 25.78° lower by 5.59°
than that of last week.

Jan 2nd, 1910 Sunday
Parson Wood held two services today. Father attended both. I have spent the day reading. Oh!
This is a dreary life I am forced to spend here. Every year seems to be worse that the one
proceeding it. The fire that I left in last night was very much alive this morning at 11 am when I
went in the office so I had nothing to do but take out the ashes and put in more coal. Have had a
fire there all day. The weather : it has been thick and cloudy all day.
morning; no snow this pm; wind South East to West South West.
Snowfall 4 inches. Max temp 32°; min temp 16.5°; mean temp 25.65°.
It was snowing all the
Blowing hard tonight.
Jan 3rd, 1910 Monday

The Battery was ‘slobbed’ over when I went in the office this am. Not much being done today.
The first overland mail for the season left St. John’s yesterday. I shall be dispatching our mail by
courier to Baie Verte Wednesday morning. I have had a busy day making up my money order
and postal telegraph accounts. Will finish up tomorrow. We don’t get any public news these
days. They say the line to St. John’s is in a very poor condition. We can’t even hear from the
Prospero. I am not feeling well today. George Rice of Wild Cove was here this afternoon. the
weather : it blew a hurricane from the West North West and North West; blowing strong all day

instrument to learn telegraphy from. Edward Stuckless of Purbeck’s Cove was here to he shop

George Hurley and Thomas Huett went to Bear Cove with a telegram message for Breen this am.
People here from Big Island, Bear Cove and Pumbly Cove. Curtus, the Bear Cove
schoolteacher, was up here this am. I tried some more gaslight prints this night. Those glossy
prints are very troublesome. They come up alright but I get them spotted somehow. I will tone
some P.C.P. prints if I can get enough printed tomorrow. The Prospero left Wesleyville at 11.40
am. Father and Simon Jacobs fixed a hole on the inside side of the office for the pipes to go up
through instead of where they are at present. Father will move the stove tomorrow morning if
mild. the weather : cloudy all day; snowing since 5 pm; moderate. Max temp 32° min temp
19.5° mean temp 20.5°

Jan 8th, 1910 Saturday
Not much being done these days. we got a little public news tonight. None of any consequence
however. I toned and fixed a batch of P.C.P. prints this pm. Father removed the stove in the
office this morning but I don’t expect to have it there very long as it doesn’t seem to answer very
well; so no doubt we will remove it to the same old place as soon as the weather gets mild
enough. George Rice came after our Northern mail for the Prospero this morning. Stephen
Jacobs arrive at Baie Verte at 1.30 pm. the overland mail hasn’t arrive at Springdale yet. I don’t
feel up to too much these days somehow. I think I must get into skin boots and rackets and go
for a walk every afternoon from Monday. The weather : fine and sunny on the whole; blowing

measure the snowfall as it is drifting everywhere. Max temp 25.2° min temp 2.7°; mean temp

Jan 12th, 1910 Wednesday
We heard through Baie Verte today that the Prospero left Coachman’s Cove at 11 am yesterday
to make a Harbor as it was too rough there for her. She must be gone North. Stephen Jacobs left
Seal Cove this morning for home. Father had a spell practicing on the instrument in the office
this afternoon and tonight. I took pills last night and feel better in health today. I hope the
steamer won’t call here at night. I hope it will be moderate tomorrow so that I can get a photo
out of doors with portrait attachment. Have spoilt 3 plates with it without getting one good
negative so far. Must see about getting to bed now. The weather : fine and sunny on the whole;
blowing a fresh breeze from the West. Max temp : 27.5°; min temp 22.1° mean temp 25°.

I have been hard to work all day getting mail ready for Steve to carry tomorrow. The overland
mail left Millertown Junction at 1 pm today. Father received a telegram from Nathan Rice
saying that his father, William Rice was accidentally killed at the Gasworks, St. John’s today.
Poor old William Rice used to be Postmaster here before I took over the office. When he left
White Bay for St. John’s in November 1902, he wished me to take over the Post Office here.
Steve came after the mail at 8 pm tonight to start in the morning. People here from bear Cove
this am; they brought Mr. Wood home in punt. Mrs. William J. Rice of Bear Cove is very ill. I
hope it will be fine tomorrow so that I can take some photos. The men were out sealing today

Jan 18th, 1910 Tuesday
I took a photo of Mother and Father took one of me with the portrait attachment this early pm.
These negatives are fine and tonight I obtained two fairly good gaslight prints from them.
Mother and Father are calling on Mr. & Mrs. Wood tonight. The election returns from England
to date show that there is not likely to be a change of Government there. The Mongrel party are
ahead of the Imperial party by 14 today and the two cursed Celtic countries Wales and Scotland
are still to be heard from and they are almost solid for the Mongrels. The parties stand as
follows : Unionists (Imperial) 92; Radicals 78; Laborites 15; Nationalists (Irish Catholic party)
13; total Mongrels 106. Steve reached Seal Cove this evening. The Southern mailmen are at
Kings Point, South West Arm. Leaving for North West Arm tomorrow morning. There was an
account of poor old William Rice’s death in the public news this evening. It seems that William
Rice was working pile driver which fell on and crushed him. He was killed instantly. The

homes some time ago and were reported missing. He sent 2 messages to find out about it.
Tonight there came a message from the Marine and Fisheries Department for him. His brothers
are now at St. John’s. They were 11 days out from this home, North Harbor, Placentia Bay.
Pafford didn’t wait for an answer to his messages but asked me to forward them by mail. I
obtained 4 very fair gaslight prints from velox tonight. Stephen Jacobs left Seal Cove with the
mail about dinner time today. The Mongrel Government are being sustained in England
although the full returns or not yet in; it is certain that they will have a fair working majority.

11 am with their mail. I took a photo of Father and a view of the Huetts’ houses from
Government Wharf this am. We get public news every day now but nothing of interest. I toned
and fixed a batch of 8 PCP prints this afternoon and tonight developed 4 gaslight prints, two of
which were fogged and useless however. I am becoming quite satisfied with life now. Everyday
seems to bring its own work and pastime. I cannot get much time for reading even. The
weather : fine but the sky has been rather hazy this pm; mild; wind South West fresh breeze.
Max temp 39°; min temp 24.8°; mean temp 32.75°. Weekly temperature record : highest 45.5°

Jan 25th, 1910 Tuesday
I haven’t felt up to much today as I was up so late last night. Have been kept busy today in the
office. Simon Jacobs went to Bear Cove with a message for Breen this afternoon. Stephen
Jacobs left here with the mail at 10.15 am. George Rice came here after the Bear Cove mail
which was landed from the Prospero last night. The weather : a foggy day; very moderate.
More like April than January. Max temp 35.8°; min temp 30.2°; mean temp 30.75°.

Jan 26th, 1910 Wednesday
Stephen Jacobs reached Baie Verte at 3.30 pm. The Southern mailmen reached there at 7 pm.

Jan 28th, 1910 Friday
People here from The Bottom Of The Bay and Sops Island. I was up to the Parsonage this am on
my way down the road to get some photo views. I took a view of Western Brook bridge and a
view of the schoolhouse. I have Darius Jacobs in both views and Simon Jacobs in the bridge
view. The Mongrel Party will have a majority of about 120 in the New British House Of
Commons. Our House Of Assembly opened yesterday with more than the ordinary foolish
forms and ceremonies. there will be a lot of talk and precious little good acts passed I expect.
The weather : still mild; cloudy but no fog today; very moderate all day; wind East, blowing
strong from the South West tonight. Max temp 45.8°; min temp 33.1° mean temp 36.1°.

Jan 29th, 1910 Saturday
This afternoon I toned a batch of P.C.P. prints and took photo negatives. the two negatives are
about the best I have yet taken. One of them is a snap shot taken in 1/25 second of the Cove
from William Jacobs’ house on this side to Simon Jacobs’s house on the other side. The other
negative is a time exposure of about 3 seconds using stop 64. It gives a good view of our house,
stores and shop, also the telegraph office from William Jacobs’ house. Father and Elias Gillam
were sawing wood for the house this am. Parson Wood went to Bear Cove this afternoon. No
prayers here tomorrow. Well this week has been the mildest winter week on my record.
Although the snow has been going fast, there is a good lot in most places yet however. It is on
the water that the season is remarkably being the most open season for years. The weather : still
mild; blowing strong from the West and South West; fine and sunny at times; cloudy on the
whole this early am and late pm; sunny between 11 am and 4 pm. Max temp ; min temp ;
mean temp . Well here endeth another week and I haven’t dome much good. It has been
remarkable for steamer Prospero having been here on Monday 24th from South and at Bear Cove
on Wednesday 26th not leaving Seal Cove until Thursday 27th; these dates establishes a record for
steam communication in White Bay during the winter season. Weekly temperature record :
highest 46.5° on the 27th; lowest 30° on the 26th and 27th; range 16.5°; highest min temp 33.5° on
the 24th; lowest Max temp 32.5° on the 26th; highest mean temp 38.5° on the 23rd; lowest mean
temp 30.75° on the 25th; mean Max temp 40.98°; mean min temp 31.61°; mean range 9.37°;
mean temp 34.81° higher by 10.23 than that of last week. Being the mildest winter week since
the week ending Dec 29th , 1906 which week had a mean temp of 36.78°. This week however
establishes a record for January which will be hard to beat.

Jan 30th, 1910 Sunday
I may say that I have spent this day writing letters. I wrote to Uncle James Lockyer, Herring
Neck; Miss Jessie Jackman, Baie Verte; Albert Rice, St. John’s; John Jacobs, Bishop’s Falls. I

from the Southern mail today. The British Elections are nearly over, only eight more seats to be
heard from. The Mongrel Party will have a majority of over 120 seats in the New Parliament.
Their majority was 354 in the late parliament. The weather : blowing very heavy from the
North West and West; South West tonight. Cloudy nearly all day. Max temp 37°; min temp
27.7°; mean temp 28.25°. Monthly temperature record for January 1910 : highest 46.5° on the
27th; lowest –2.7° on the 4th; range 49.2°; highest min temp 33.5° on the 24th; lowest Max temp
9° on the 14th; highest mean temp 40.75° on the 19th; lowest mean temp 3.75° on the 14th; mean
Max temp 31.22°; mean min temp 17.98°; mean range of temp 13.24°; mean temp 23.8° higher

don’t get exercise enough. Must go for a walk every day the weather is fine in future. The

8 years ago, February 18th 1902, I first began to keep a diary. It makes me feel ashamed to read
those early attempts; they were very crude and the writing and spelling not to speak of the
grammar were anything but good. I was then but 17 years old. Oh! what a lot of changes we
have had since then ! Poor Ernie was then alive; a little boy of 12. Poor William Rice who was
recently killed at St. John’s was then Postmaster here. I find his name mentioned in that day’s
events as having brought me some book which I had lent Coady who had been down in White

Father has been kept busy nearly all day with people from The Bottom Of The Bay and back
Cove here to the shop. I have been busy writing letters and spoiling films. I received 4 packages
of films by mail so this pm I exposed one roll. As they were not the right kind of films for my
camera being of too short a spool an also having put the roll in wrong, in consequence I only
obtained 2 negatives of the whole roll of 6. I am returning the remaining three rolls by Father to
Gray and (page torn). Father is going to St. John’s by Prospero. The weather : a splendid day;

miserable.

Jun 18th, 1910 Saturday
It is some time since I wrote any thing in this my diary. As the interval is so long I shall not
attempt to record the events there of. In future I shall not record the weather and shall write here
only when the mood to do so is on me. I made a fool of myself when I wrote the last items.
Needless to say I have seen how foolish it is to be in love with any girl. but enough of this at
present Father went North by last Prospero. John Jacobs left here for Twillingate by the
Prospero last trip. Budgell also is away from home. He went North last Prospero. Mr. Wood
received his wonderful news bell for the Church by last Prospero. It was put up last week and
used for the first time Sunday last.

Jun 18th, 1910 Sunday
Susan Poole has left Pound Cove to go with her cousin Borden of Twillingate who is in the Bay
in a fishing schooner. Dick Martin who has been courting her for so long is in a terrible way
over it. Poor fool ! I was like him last year this time and at intervals since, ha ! ha! However, it
is all over now and I don’t believe I will ever be troubled that way again. It is of no use for a
man to trouble about anything or anyone in this world. For sure, nobody will trouble about you.
Just heard North West Arm tell South West Arm that Prospero left La Scie about 4.30 or 5 pm.
As it is drawing near tea time, I must bring this epistle to a close with the remark that it is dull
and cloudy and raining now. A good sign of fish here today. William Jacobs jigged ½ barrel.
Others did fairly.

Jul 18th, 1910 Monday (written by Jessie Jackman)
Came in with this diary, read over some sweet nothings of Theresa, Mother and Coppernob.
Tried to get those pages but burnt them. As they were intended for my own eyes alone.

Jul 19th, 1910 Friday
I have neglected this my diary for over a month now. Although I have but little time for writing
tonight, I must record a few items here. Hope to visit these pages more frequently in future.
Jessie Jackman who wrote the above item paid us a short visit from the 16th to the 19th instant.
She came by Prospero from Coachman’s Cove and Captain Kean landed her off the Head and
she left here again by Prospero for Seal Cove on Tuesday morning, July 19th . We were all very
pleased with her and wished her visit had been longer. On Monday, July 18th, she and I went out
to tea at the Parsonage. After I got GOOD NIGHT from the line that night she and I went for a
walk to Pound Cove and visited Stephen Jacobs. Poor old Isaac was in bed when we went in but
he got up and dressed himself and came out to see us. The old man is 83 or 84 years of age and
was born about 1826 in the reign of King George IV. Miss Jessie is now at Seal Cove spending
a time with her sister Aggie. Not much doing this week. I have not been very well having the
La Grippe but am getting better again now. Yesterday, a prospector named Fax called here on
his way to Chase Brook and I obtained a snap shot of him and his man Lilley who was here 8
years ago. Lilley used to live at Tilt Cove when we were there 13 years ago. As it is getting late,
I shall have to stop now. I was talking to Jessie Jackman at Seal Cove for an hour yesterday
evening. She is a very nice girl and …….. but enough of this or I shall have to tear out more
leafs by and bye, ha ! ha! Must not indulge in subject like that as I am not in a position to do so
at present. Father, Mr. Wood and Budgell are leaving for North by Prospero tomorrow so we
here are in for an extra dull period. Prospero left Pilleys Island 5.25 pm. Expect she will be here
about 1 or 2 pm tomorrow. Oh how much better to write with a pencil than a pen. the pencil
glides over the paper so much more easier and lighter. As I have to write off a copy of the news
for Mr. Wood, I must stop now. don’t expect to get time tomorrow for any writing here but may
on Sunday. Have given up keeping a temperature record and also the daily weather record so
there is no need of a daily diary at present. Mrs. peter Gill, a sister of Darius and William Jacobs
came by last Prospero to spend a time with her people at Bear Cove and this place. she wished
to have her photo taken so I tried to do so. had two failures and the third a snap shot is rather
spotty. Must really stop now.

Aug 6th, 1910 Saturday
Oh such a storm! It came on at 1.20 pm. It is now 2 pm and the worse seems to be over. Such
heavy thunder and lightning and the rain pouring down in sheets. The rain seems to be over now
but the thunder is still rumbling heavy and the lightning is almost constantly playing heavy on
the telegraph instruments. I must see how much rain fell during the storm which only lasted for
¾ hour. Later ; just 1 inch of rain fell during this pm’s storm. Father is North now. He left here
by Prospero July 30th . Mr. Wood also went North by Prospero but returned again Tuesday
August 2nd landing from her at Bear Cove. He came for thence in punt Tuesday afternoon and
left for the country that same evening. At 4 am next morning he killed a deer. The highest
temperature to date in August was 74° yesterday. Mr. Wood and Budgell arrived home from the
country this afternoon. William, Thomas and James Jacobs who were in deer hunting arrived
home last evening with 1 deer between them. 1.42 inches of rain have fallen to date in August.
Jessie Jackman returned home from Seal Cove by Prospero Tuesday. It has cleared up fine again
now so I think I will go and see how my prints are getting on.

Oct 1st, 1910 Saturday
Again I take up diary writing after an interval of nearly 2 months. I shall not attempt to record
the events of those two months tonight as it is too cold to do so. I daresay I shall often allude to
some of them on some future date. I shall also begin to keep a temperature record which I have
neglected to do since July. Mr. Wood and Budgell who has been in the country since Monday
arrived home this early pm. Mr. Wood has a house in there now. I haven’t much talk to Budgell
yet so cannot write any particulars of their movements except that they killed no deer. Nearly all
the Western Cove men are in the country now. Father arrived home from North Tuesday
morning by Prospero. He is laid up with carbuncles and has been in bed all the week. He has
been up a little today. Robert Jacobs and James Huett netted about ½ barrel herring outside the
wharf this am. Old lacey who has been down here from Purbeck’s Cove since Friday am

interesting and although I read it years ago, am quite as interested in it now as when I first read
it. It just shows what a fool a man will make of himself over a woman. As my old diary shows,
I have myself experienced these things since I read that book before. I did make a beastly fool of
