Jan 1st, 1908 Wednesday It blew a terrible gale of wind all last night and until 3.30 pm this afternoon. At 9.30 pm last night, the Lulu burst her chains and drove ashore; she is not hurt much yet however. I tried to take photo of Sancho in the house this afternoon but again made a mess of it. People here from Pumbly Cove. The weather ; a stormy cold and frosty day; blowing heavy from the west North West and North West; rather finer and more moderate this afternoon. I haven’t been outdoors much today. The Lulu is ashore alongside the new Wharf place which father had fixed up opposite our garden this Fall; I must try to get a view of he before they get her off tomorrow. Max temp 30.8°; min temp 13.8°; mean temp 15.40°. Jan 2nd, 1908 Thursday I haven’t been well today; last night I took a pill and today I have been sick at the stomach. I am also troubled by a boil on my seat. Father, William Jacobs, John Jacobs, Darius Jacobs and Robert Jacobs got the Lulu off the rocks this evening at 6 pm. At 7 pm, young Marthina, whilst removing a mat frame, struck the kitchen lamp and knocked it out of its stand unto the floor; Father ran out with a mat and smothered the flame. Thomas Stuckless of Purbeck’s Cove was here this afternoon; I bought a pair of ratchets from him. People here from Hauling Point. Father, William and Robert Jacobs were working about the Lulu this morning. I obtained a snapshot of them at the work. I took a photo of Mother and young Marthina this morning. I got a snapshot of Sancho this afternoon. Father and Mother were up to the parsonage this afternoon. We are all very much afraid that the steamer will not reach us another trip as the weather is very cold and frosty with slob making fast. Jan 8th, 1908 Wednesday E. W. Breen arrived at Tiltville last night. He is up here waiting for the steamer. Father attended prayers tonight. Some of the Western Cove men were hauling wood for the Parson this morning. Not much trade this day. Father had the Lulu hove down for repair this morning. As it was blowing hard from the North West and as they would not get her in by the Wharf, Breen and we who had freight by her could not get it out. At 1.35 am, she proceeded on her way North. I received several letters by this mail I received from the P.M.G. notice for tenders for the conveyance of the Southern overland mail; Darius and Stephen Jacobs have tendered for it. Breen and Mr. Wood went to Hauling Point this morning. The weather : fine and sunny; winds West North West and South West; this week ends with but very little snow on the ground. Jan 13th, 1908 Monday At 1 am this morning, the SS Portia arrived from North. They got her in by the Wharf and took out Breen’s and our freights. They left here for South at 2.25 am. My leg seems inclined to give me trouble again. Breen came up from Hauling Point last night; he returned home again this afternoon. People here from hauling Point and Seal Cove. Not much being done these days. The weather : it began to snow shortly after the steamer arrived here and it has been snowing ever since; snowfall to 9 pm 6 ½ inches. Winds East and East South East. Most of the Western Cove men were out turr hunting this morning. This is a remarkably open season; generally at this time of the year White Bay is slobbed over and often times frozen solid. I helped Father saw wood this afternoon. The weather : cloudy all day; wind South and South West; fairly mild for a winter day; there was a snow squall about noon. The Bay is now full of northern drift slob ice which came in yesterday and last night. I have been busy at photo work all this day. Jan 21st, 1908 Tuesday I have been busy printing out photos today. Tonight, I made up a mail for Stephen to take to Baie Verte tomorrow. This will be our first overland mail for this season. Jan 25th, 1908 Saturday This afternoon, George Rice and Thomas Jacobs of Wild Cove came here accompanied by Simon Jacobs of this place. Simon had orders from Breen to draw molasses for them from his stock on the Government Wharf. We are all getting La Grippe. AT 4.30 pm, Stephen Jacobs arrived with the Southern mail. The Portia is on her way North again. I see by the papers that yet another attempt has been made to frighten the poor old earth to death; the latest prophet says that there are some terrible things going to happen during this present year and that our dear old Mother Earth will meet her end in December. I hope she will not die of heart failure brought on by anticipation before that date as this poor prophet would lose his character for veracity. Edward and Joseph Stuckless of Purbeck’s Cove were here to the shop to get medicine for Thomas Stuckless who is very ill. Young Marthina was up a long time today; she went to bed again about 3 pm complaining of a bad headache. The weather : it was very mild all last night and this morning until 11 am; about 11 am, the wind veered Western from South West in the midst of a snow storm; rather colder this afternoon; blowing a gale from the West North West. Robert and Simon Jacobs mended the roof of our shop this afternoon. I took a snapshot of Robert and Simon before they began work on the shop. Father and I have been busy in the shop tending people today. W. C. Lacey returned home this morning. The weather : fine and sunny; very moderate after 11 am; before 11 am there was a little wind South South West; since 3 pm there has been a light breeze from the South East. Feb 1st, 1908 Saturday At noon today, Stephen Jacobs arrived from Baie Verte with the Southern mail. Shortly after Stephen’s arrival, the Jackson’s Arm mailmen, Allen and George Combden arrived. This afternoon, Father swore them in as mail couriers and they left again with the return mail at 2 pm. Poor old John Gillam of Pound Cove died of Las Grippe last night or early this morning. Poor old Lacey who came down here this morning, received bad news by this mail. his son, Roland who is in the Naval Reserve was stabbed to death at Jamaica by a crowd of Negroes. The SS Portia got as far north as Coachman’s Cove and returned south again. I received letters from Maud Foote and Bert ice by this mail. The weather : fine and sunny but cold and windy; winds North West and West North West. The Cove is now clear of ice or slob. Mr. Wood expects t be well enough o hold prayers tomorrow. Today, I made three attempts to take a photo of Mrs. Jacobs, but as there was something wrong with the plates which I used, there could be nothing done with them as negatives. After we returned home, I developed the plate; it didn’t yield a good negative as it was under exposed and as the large altar lamp appeared in the picture blotting out part of the window. Later (8 pm) poor old Mrs. Samuel Jacobs died at 7 pm this evening. Robert Jacobs came out to let us know of her death. She was 62 years of age. She came in the Cove on full speed and as old John Jacobs was alone of the wharf, they had some little difficulty in getting the lines ashore. Old Captain Kean began to storm like a raging bull where up on William Jacobs and I who had then arrived on the scene gave him back as good as he sent; he became so mad at last that he ordered the ship away from the wharf saying that he would never up her alongside again. We had to take out our freight in skiffs and it was nearly 4.40 pm before they got clear of this place. Thomas Spark and family who went to St. John’s less than two years ago, returned for good by this steamer. Mrs. Joseph Cakes, nee Deb Poole, came from Tilt Cove to see her father by this steamer. As it happened , Mr. Chafe (the man who came to take stock for Breen) came here from Bear Cove a short time before and being a J.P. he stopped the fight. This afternoon John and I went down to fix up the poll booth in William Rice’s house which now belongs tot Father. John Jacobs took out a summon s against Alex Huett for assaulting him. William Huett took out a summons against William Jacobs for assault. These cases will be tried Tuesday. Andrew Rice was here from Hauling Point this morning. Alex Huett had to pay a fine of $20.00 for assaulting John Jacobs Sr. The case against William Jacobs was dismissed. at 7 pm the SS Strathcona arrived here after the ballot box etc. They brought news that one Liberal and one Tory member are returned.
