1771 - 1780 Voyages, to and from Newfoundland

Extracted from Lloyd's Lists, London (Incomplete)
(While a fair sampling is extracted here; this listing is not a "complete" record listing, of Newfoundland Lloyd’s Lists voyage entries.) Vessels could be constructed cheaper in Colonial America, where virgin timber was limitless, than could be done back home in England. (Note: This listing may contain contractions, spelling and/or transcription errors, as sometimes extracted from typed material. Correction or improvement is possible in certain cases.) Voyages in which Newfoundland may have been an interim port, and for which Newfoundland was not a specifically named port within the lists, are not included here, except as examples, notes, endnotes, or other, which are asterisked as *****.

Transcribed and contributed by David Anstey with assistance from Marilyn Pilkington. (Note: This listing may contain contractions, spelling and/or transcription errors. Correction or improvement is possible in certain cases). While we have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be errors.

An unusual example of passengers being the "only" cargo, Newfoundland to England. *Consider the American declared War of Independence, in mid 1776, vs. Loyalists. 4.

    Apr 21, 1780 edition.

His Majesties Ship "Vestal" was employed as security for English vessels, which would voyage to the Newfoundland plantation.

Early Newfoundland was not an official parliamentary legislated English/British colony. There were no Newfoundland citizens until after 1824. There was no framework, for parish, priest, banns, etc., in early Newfoundland history. Marriage in early Newfoundland, clandestine yes (a marriage conducted by an ordained clergyman, but without banns or licence), was performed under English common law, tradition, and practice, which breached the canon law. It was a civil function, as opposed to adhering to the Church of England and Catholic rules of banns, etc. Legal by civil standard, and officially recognized as such, after Newfoundland became a legislated colony of Britain.

Newfoundland was in effect a cod fishery worksite preserve, claimed and held by the English Crown. A low investment, long-term, lucrative trade.

One could fish at the pleasure of the English Crown, but settlement/residency of “planters”, was officially discouraged. Settlement probably in most cases amounted to “squatting on Crown lands”. *It is noted here that squatting on Crown lands is still common today, in 2015.

The Newfoundland cod fish was used at European seaports to trade for fruit, wine, salt, money, etc., which were returned to England.

The practically free cod fish at Newfoundland was worth more to the English Crown than all the gold of Mexico was worth to the Spaniards.

The gold was but a cash grab. The cod fish in Newfoundland filled English and foreign bottoms for centuries.

Home economics was in the driver's seat, in 15th, 16th & 17th centuries England. English West County fishermen and mayors petitioned Parliament that Newfoundland remain a fishing preserve; otherwise, the West County trade would be affected, and townsfolk would be without their regular employment in the Newfoundland fishery. Thus without their livelihood/bread on the table. Those resident planters were troublesome and

    unnecessary, they petitioned.

When mother country England/Britain wanted better economic returns from the American colonies, and to keep the early colonies subservient to the British economy, the Americans rebelled, conducted a War of Independence, and concurrently sought out French help for their cause, as evidenced per Lloyd's listings.

A correlation is seen in the mid 1670's, when Newfoundland inhabitants threatened to settle among the French in Newfoundland. A radical idea? The inhabitants were about to lose both their trade/income, and homes/properties. In the 1670s the English Parliament, swayed by the West County Newfoundland fishing interest's petitioning, created legislation to have Sir John Berry begin the removal process of permanent Newfoundland planters/settler/residents. The inhabitants had been “represented” as tearing down departed West County fishermen’s stages, wharves, etc., at Newfoundland. Troublesome and unnecessary. Later, Sir John Berry gave proof to Parliament that such a misrepresentation was in fact false. Proof was given that departing West County migratory fishermen tore down their own stages to avoid having other early arrived British vessels/admirals/fishers taking and using their former “fishing rooms”, rooms they had built with their own hands.

Unnecessary and troublesome these planters were, the West County fishing interests had petitioned over the decades. In 1676, and again in 1677, the migratory fishers from England, feeling backed by the English Parliament’s decision to have the settlers removed from Newfoundland, destroyed much of the effects of the Newfoundland planters and drove some from their coastal "rooms", being illegally settled within six miles of the sea, as was conjectured by many voyaging West. Newfoundlanders protested that if forced to leave their settlements, property and livelihood—and some of them were legally settled—they would come home to England, effecting economic hardship on their respective home parishes. Otherwise, they would simply settle among the French in Newfoundland.

The English West County fishing interests had almost usurped the early planter's legal right to their Newfoundland rooms/properties. It took John Downing, inhabitant, along with Sir John Berry and plural other naval commanders having experience in Newfoundland, to reveal the truth to Parliament. The West County fishing interests’ charges against the settlers were not found to be entirely correct. Would the Newfoundland settlers legal right to property/rooms be usurped? Such would be a radical departure for Britain, whose history had enshrined the rights of its citizens to their properties. A better understanding of the true nature of the Newfoundland settlers induced Parliament to reverse the recent settler removal policy, allowing them to stay, the British Parliament, being always mindful that the French might decide to lay ulterior legal claim to Newfoundland. The French, who took greater care to treat their Newfoundland plantation more as a colony than Britain, thereby may have held a more valid legal claim. Were these early French settlers in Newfoundland Protestant? How many of the early British settlers in Newfoundland were Protestant?
