1761 & 1770 Voyages, to and from Newfoundland

Extracted from Lloyd's Lists, London (Incomplete)
(While a fair sampling is extracted here; this listing is not a "complete" record listing, of Newfoundland Lloyd’s Lists voyage entries.) Vessels could be constructed cheaper in Colonial America, where virgin timber was limitless, than could be done back home in England. (Note: This listing may contain contractions, spelling and/or transcription errors, as sometimes extracted from typed material. Correction or improvement is possible in certain cases.) Voyages in which Newfoundland may have been an interim port, and for which Newfoundland was not a specifically named port within the lists, are not included here, except as examples, notes, endnotes, or other, which are asterisked as *****.

Transcribed and contributed by David Anstey with assistance from Marilyn Pilkington. (Note: This listing may contain contractions, spelling and/or transcription errors. Correction or improvement is possible in certain cases). While we have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be errors.

    10.
Dec 4, 1767 entry. John Collins out of Cork, at Conception Bay.

John Collins was a resident of Cove of Cork (modern day Cobh) from at least the early 1760s until 1791. (Originally a small fishing village, Cove, on the south side of Great Island in Cork Harbour, was described by the historian Dr. Charles Smith in 1750 as being “inhabited by seamen and revenue officials.) Collins’ daughter married John Roche, Jr., at Cove in April 1781; at the time of her marriage she was described as “an agreeable young lady with a handsome fortune.” (Hibernian Chronicle, April 30, 1781.)

Captain Collins was the owner and master of the “Hannah and Lydia”, an 80-ton brig, built in New England in 1760, repaired in 1774 and 1776, rebuilt in 1767, and renamed the “Ann” in 1780. The “Hannah and Lydia” was E grade, with E grade denoting a second-class vessel, third quality repairs. (Lloyd’s Register). The brig was designed entirely for the Newfoundland trade. She typically sailed with a crew of seven to nine men and carried passengers, including fishermen, shoremen, and youngsters, to Newfoundland annually and off loaded fish at the south European markets on the way home. She serviced both Carbonear and Harbour Grace.

Collins’s agent was Timothy Hurly, ship chandler and spirit merchant, of the Coal-quay, Cork (Corke Journal, April 1765). There is also evidence of Hurly in Newfoundland as agent for a Mrs. McCarty (a complaint was made by William Fling against Hurly as McCarty’s agent in 1769—Harbour Grace court records). He was probably the Timothy Hurly, merchant, Cork City, who died in 1805. (Prerogative Wills of Ireland.)

John Collins, who promised his passengers “the best Accommodations of every kind, and the Kindest Treatment from the Captain” (Corke Journal, April 1765), occupied a ships room at Harbour Grace for a period of time (O’Heron case, 1766, Harbour Grace). It is possible that in some years he had a room at Carbonear.

As well, he appears to have been acquainted with Trinity, northwest of Harbour Grace and Carbonear. According to Keith Matthews Name Files, information extracted from the Lester Diaries shows that a Captain Collins (no first name given) “arrived Trinity from Carbonear in a boat”, June 25, 1767. It is almost certain this is John Collins, who, as noted elsewhere in this document, had taken the “Conception Bay” to Newfoundland that year. See entries for “Conception Bay” above: Feb 3 1767—sailed from Cork to St. Ubes; Apr 14 1767—arrived at Cork from St. Ubes; Nov 20 1767—left Newfoundland from Cork*; and Dec 4 1767—arrived Cork from Newfoundland. (*This entry was taken from Keith Matthews Name Files, extracted from Lloyd’s List). (Also of interest is that the crossing above, from Newfoundland to Cork, took 14 days. It’s not known if the weather was favourable.)

Captain Collins was active in the marine trade for at least three decades—1760s, 1770s, 1780s (Lloyd’s Lists). The “Hannah and Lydia” was launched in the spring of 1765, as per John’s advertisement in the Corke Journal lauding his “new stout Vessel, and remarkable fast Sailor”. Prior to this time—and indeed sometimes after—he is confirmed as being the captain of the “Conception Bay” (150 tons burthen, of Corke) and “William” (40 tons burthen, of Cork) and may have commanded others (“Royal Charlotte”? “Dolphin”?). In addition, he sailed the “Kitty” in 1766 (owned by S. Shaw & Co.) and again in 1788 (owned by Henry Shea). (Lloyd’s List) (Shaw and Shea may have been the same family.)

John Collins was associated with Captains Barry (a Great Island, Cork name), Rigan/Regan (Morgan), Green (William), Brooke, and Naron, all of whom sailed the “Hannah and Lydia” for him. He was probably also associated with (or at least knew) Captain Patrick Collins, who sailed the “Kitty” on behalf of Shea in the late 1780s (Keith Matthews Name Files). (Question: Was Patrick connected to Patrick Collins of Bay de Verde (Plantation Records, 1805)? Note that a generation later there was a Captain James Collins of Bay de Verde, master of the “Benjamin”, which was captured by the Americans during the War of 1812—A History of American Privateers, Edgar Stanton Maclay).

Captain Collins remained at Cove until at least 1791. At that time he placed an advertisement in the Hibernian Chronicle: “To be let, a commodious house at West Passage, in the Great Island, pleasantly situated for Sea Bathers during the Season, for a long term of years as may be agreed upon, with some Lands. Application to be made to Captain Collins at Cove.” Whether this means he decided to vacate Great Island altogether (both Cove and West Passage) isn’t currently known.
