These obituaries were transcribed from the newspaper, The Gulf News. It is printed weekly at Port aux Basques and is distributed to many communities from Rose Blanche on the south coast to South Branch on the West Coast.

MARY T. RYAN
Passed away at Charles LeGrow Health Centre, Port aux Basques, on January 4, 2000, Mary T. Ryan in her 88th year. She was predeceased by her husband, Dennis, parents, Moses and Catherine Burns, sister, Carmel Martin Kavanaugh. She leaves to mourn six children, Cyril and Tillie Ryan, Dennis and Carmel Ryan of O'Regans, Margaret (Robert) blake of Grant's Pass, Oregon, Ann Marie (William) Doucete of Tompkins, Ursala (Ray) Schumph of Kippens, Sarah (Alfred) Woods of London, Ont.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren. Funeral mass took place at St. Ann's RC Church officiated by Father DT McGrath. Interment followed at Chaple Green RC Cemetery.

MARY ONA MacISAAC nee CRABBE
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mary Ona MacIsaac announce her passing at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital on January 27, 2000 at the age of 83 years. She leaves to mourn five children, Nora (Bill) Burton, Maude (David) Burt, Wilfred (Bev) of CornerBrook, Shirley (Frank) Pike, Ruth (Lionel) Forsey of Port aux Basques; one sister, Lenora Moody of Boston; six grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Archie in 1967 and her daughter, Irene in 1960. Funeral services took place January 29th 11am at the Church of the Most Precious Blood RC Church, St. Andrews with Father McGrath officiating. Interment to follow at the church cemetery.

FREDERICK WALL
Passed away suddenly at St. Andrews on January 29, 2000 Frederick Wall, at the age of 63 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Florence and Daniel and brother Gerald. He leaves to mourn sister, Teresa; brother, William and Elva of Sydney, NS; 3 nieces, Rita, Jeannie and Mary. Funeral services took place February 1st 10am at the Church of the Most Precious Blood RC Church, St. Andrews with Father McGrath officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery.

THERESA ANN MacDONALD nee MacISAAC
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Theresa Ann MacDonald (MacIsaac) announce her sudden passing at her residence on February 25th, 2000 at the age of 83 years. She leaves to mourn her four sons, James of Burlington, Ont., Arthur, Kevin (Darlene) of Stephenville, and John of St. Andrews; one daughter, Madonna of St. Andrews; 7 grandchildren, Christine, Jodi, Victoria, Leo, Lorne, James and Shawn; 2 sisters, Tina MacLellan of Codroy Valley and Dorothy Saunders of Burlington, Ont. She was predeceased by her husband, Leo MacDonald in 1958 and her parents, Stephen and Catherine (MacLellan) MacIsaac. Funeral services took place February 28th 11am from Roman Catholic Church of the Most Precious Blood, St. Andrews with Father McGrath officiating. Interment followed at Mount St. Thomas RC Cemetery, Great Codroy.

FLORENCE SHEARS nee KENDALL
Passed away at her residence in Tompkins on March 9th, 2000 Florence Shears, in her 67th year. She leaves to mourn her husband Wendell Cobb and seven children, James (Leona) of Halifax, NS, Jane (Mrs. Pastor Skinner) of Pool’s Cove, Delores (Walter) Janes, Alice (James) Collier, Melinda Janes, Kimberley (Benjamin) Hilliard all of Codroy, Nora Musseau of Port aux Basques; 13 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 5 step-children, Angela and Ray, Marilyn and Frank of Brantford, Ont., Rick of Toronto, Ont., David at Halifax, NS, Jamie of London, Ont.; brothers, Andrew (Ellen), Edward and Rosena, Basil and Audrey of Port aux Basques, William and Barbara at Codroy; sister Jean Donaldson of Codroy. Funeral services took place at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Grand Bay, officiated by Rev. EM Smith and Rev. George Critchell. Interment followed at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Trans Canada Highway.

AUCOIN, HECTOR RAYMOND
Passed peacefully away at his home in South Branch on March 27th, 2000, in the presence of his loving family, Hector Raymond Aucoin at the age of 62 years. Leaving to mourn his wife of 42 years, Bridget (O’Quinn); two sons, Shawn (Bernette) of Lower Sackville, NS, Tony (Karen) of Kingston, Ont; five daughters, Christine (Tony) McNeil of South Branch, Marilyn (Elvis) Gillam of St. Fintan’s, Gloria of Lower Sackville, NS, Dale (Bill) Aucoin of Burlington, Ont, Tracey (Scott) Kettle of Port aux Basques; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, Murdock, Johnny and Anthony Aucoin; four sisters, Marie, Margaret, Josephine and Sally. He was predeceased by his parents, Narcis and Julia (Gale), brothers; Hughie, James and Arthur, sisters; Helen and Gertrude. Funeral service took place on March 30th, 11am at St. Sylvester’s Roman Catholic Church in South Branch with Father Desmond McGrath officiating. Interment followed at St. Sylvester’s RC Cemetery.

KENDALL, WALTER
Passed away at the Dr. Charles LeGrow Health Centre, on March 26th, 2000, Walter Kendall in his 78th year. He was predeceased by his wife Mabel in 1992. He leaves to mourn three children, Linda (Cyril) Smith, Codroy Valley, Ronald (Tina), Grand Prairie, AB, Richard (Doreen) of Woody Point; 8 grandchildren; brothers, John (Lena), Elias (Marcella) and Herbert; sisters, Dorcas , and Helen (Cecil) Kendall. Funeral services took place March 29th , 2pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church officiated by Rev. EM Smith. Interment followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.

SAMMS, ELIZABETH ISABEL nee GALE
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Elizabeth Samms announce her passing at Western Memorial Hospital, Corner Brook on April 1st , 2000 at the age of 82 years. Predeceased by her husband Vincent and her son Charles Edward, she will be forever missed by her loving family: sons, Eli (Margaret), Wallace (Alicia) of Millville, Charles (Karen), Carl (Corinne) of Port Colbourne, Frances (Valery) of Oshawa; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral service was held on April 4th 11am, at St. Ann’s RC Church with Father McGrath officiating. Interment followed at Mount St. Thomas RC Cemetery, Great Codroy.

DEVOE, GARY ERIC
Irishtown. On April 8, 2000, after a brave and courageous battle with cancer, Gary left us to do his flying with the angels. At age 17, God closed his arms around him and whispered "Come to Me". With loving memories he leaves his mom and dad, Diane (Kendell) and Walter, one brother Cory; grandparents, Eric and Irene Kendall; aunts, Cathy (Roy) Groves, Marilyn (John) Hayes, Martina (Blake) Jacklin, Carol (Kevin) MacNeil, Germaine (John) McKinney , Margaret (John) Triplett, Lillian (George) Battiste; uncles, Redmond Devoe, Marshall (Patsy) Devoe, Ted (Pauline) Devoe; Godchild, Devon Groves and special cousin Laura Groves. Gary was predeceased by his brother Kurt, 1987, grandparents Martin and Genevieve Devoe, Uncle Francis Devoe, cousins Gary Devoe and Jeanette Parsons. Funeral service was held on April 12th 2 p.m., with Father McGrath officiating. Interment followed at Mount St. Thomas RC Cemetery, Great Codroy.

DOWNEY, WALTER JOSEPH
It is with great sadness and regret that the family of the late Walter Joseph Downey announce his sudden passing at the Dr. Charles LeGrow Health Centre on April 24th, 2000 at the age of 69 years. He leaves to mourn his wife Lucy (Norman); four sons, Brendan (Sandy), Dan (Katie), Terry (Debbie), Steve (Karen) all of Great Codroy; daughter, Jeanette (Dan) Gougeon of Ottawa; 11 grandchildren; brothers, Bert and Ralph; sister Margaret. He was predeceased by his parents, Alban and Rose (Young) Downey,son, David, four brothers, Bobby, Allie, Fintan and Kevin. Funeral service was held on April 27th 11a.m. at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church with Father McGrath officiating. Interment followed at Mount St. Thomas RC Cemetery, Great Codroy.

O’QUINN, Linda Mary
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Linda Mary O’Quinn (nee St. Croix) announce her sudden passing at Western Memorial Hospital, Corner Brook, May 13th, 2000 at the age of 52 years. She leaves to mourn her loving and devoted husband Jerome O’Quinn; three loving children, Bobby (Cindy) O’Quinn of South Branch, Michelle (John) Russo of Georgia, Viola (Tom) Page of Ottawa; 4 grandchildren; her parents, Margaret and Joe St. Croix of South Branch; five sisters, Shirley (Roger), Bernette (Shawn), Rhonda (Brett), Imelda (Joe), Pat (Guy); six brothers, Joey (Cynthia), Sandy (Kit), Ben (Joanne), Devin (Deanna), Neil (Val), and Jackie. Funeral services took place May 16th 2pm from St. Sylvester’s Roman Catholic Church in South Branch with Father Desmond McGrath officiating. Interment followed at St. Sylvester’s RC Cemetery.

LEO FRANCIS HAMMOND
It is with great sadness and regret that the family of the late Leo Hammond announce his passing at his family residence on May 18th, 2000 at the age of 62 years. He leaves to mourn his wife Rose (nee Poirier); four children, Bev (Scott) Hicks of Codroy Valley, Paula (Ed) Buckle of Mount Pearl, Belinda (Lew) Hammond of Dartmouth, NS, Gary (Paula) Hammond of Middle Sackville, NS; six grandchildren; brother, Pat (Celine) Hammond of Long Harbour, Placentia Bay; three sisters, Bertha (Alf) Gillis of Codroy Valley, Betty Brown of Eastport, Nf, Julia Belmer of Brooklyn, NY; two brothers-in-law, Joe (Jeanette) Poirier of London, Ont., Leo (Bea) Poirier of Toronto, Ont.; seven sisters-in-law, Margarite Poirier of Jasper, AB, Ann Poirier of Toronto, Ont., Anne Bennett (friend Bob Rose) of Port aux Basques, Agnes (Rob) Garner of Brantford, Ont., Pauline Patten (friend Frank) of Calgary, AB, Fran Read (husband Ken Hale) of Halifax, NS, Betty Poirier of Petawawa, Ont. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Elizabeth (Griffits) Hammond, brothers, Tom and Edward, sister, Mary. Funeral service took place at St. Anne’s RC Church on May 22nd with Father Desmond McGrath officiating. Interment followed at Mount St. Thomas RC Cemetery, Great Codroy.

LUEDEE, MARY nee RYAN
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Mary Luedee, aged 87 announce her passing at the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre on June 3rd, 2000 She leaves to mourn her husband of 65 years, Nicholas; ten children, Adele (Bernard) Wall, Bernard and Adeline, Gordie and Betty of St. Andrews, Bernice (Lew) Marks, Lucine (Alfred) Anderson of Upper Ferry, James and Elenor, Leo and Peggy of Toronto, Cecilia (Gerard) Ryan, Margaret Rose (Gerald) Ryan of O’Regan’s, Anne Marie (Alex) Carter of St. John’s; 19 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren She was predeceased by her son Cyril in 1994. Funeral services took place June 6th, 11:00am at the Church of the Most Precious Blood RC Church, St. Andrews with Father McGrath and Father Patry officiating. Interment followed at Mount St. Thomas Roman Catholic Cemetery in Great Codroy.

HYNES, MICHAEL JAMES
It is with great sadness that the brothers and sisters of the late Michael James Hynes announce his passing at the Western Memorial Hospital, Corner Brook on June 13th, 2000 at the age of 82 years. He leaves to mourn two brothers, Leonard of Searston and Bernard of Oromocto, NB; two sisters, Theresa of New Waterford, NS and Patricia of Searston. Funeral services took place June 16th at St. Anne’s Church in Upper Ferry with Father Desmond McGrath officiating. Interment followed at St. Anne’s Cemetery at Searston.

HYNES, WILLIAM PHILIP
It is with great sadness that the family of the late William Philip announce his passing after a very courageous battle with cancer at the Dr. Charles LeGrow Health Centre on June 20th, 2000 at the age of 50 years. He leaves to mourn his wife, Marion; three children, Kurt of Calgary, AB, Jeff (Alisha Hann) of Dartmouth, NS, Clinton of St. Andrew’s; his parents, Leonard and Rita Hynes of St. Andrew’s; six brothers, Doug (Laura), Kevin (Marie), Brian (Sharon) all of St. Andrew’s, Leo (Kaye) of Frankville, NS, Karl (Pam) of North Brandford, Conn., Glen of Toronto; six sisters, Jean (Don), Marg (Lloyd), Marlene (Ted), Patti, Georgina (Geoff) all of Ontario, Pamela (Danny) of NS; his mother in law Mary Blagdon; three brothers in law, William (Rose), Phillip, and Ches; sister in law, Peg (Ches). Memorial service took place June 22nd, 2pm at the Church of the Most Precious Blood RC Church, St. Andrews with Father McGrath officiating. Interment of cremated remains followed at the church cemetery.

GILLIS, MICHAEL F
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Michael F. Gillis announce his passing at the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre on June 21st, 2000 in his 84th year. He leaves to mourn with fond and preciousmemories his wife Gertrude (nee Gale); seven loving children: Michael Jr. of Codroy, Alfred (Cathy) of Codroy, Tony (Judy) of Great Codroy, Peter (Angela) of Dryden, ON, Caroline (Ronald) Wall of Corner Brook, Mary (Barry) AuCoin of Stephenville, Leila Gillis of Goose Bay, Labrador; brother Alfred (Bertha) Gillis of Great Codroy; brothers-in-law: David Janigan of Ottawa, Robert Gale of Ontario, Gordon Gale of Stephenville; sisters-in-law: Rita Doyle of Stephenville, Dorothy Oliver of Cape Breton, NS; nine grandchildren and a very special and close family friend, Betty Mercer. He was predeceased by his parents Edwin Joseph and Sarah (Blanchard) Gillis; step-mother Margaret (MacArthur) Doyle; brother, Wallace; sisters, Mary, Anne, Leila, grandson Andrew Gillis and granddaughter Nicole Gillis. Funeral service took place on June 24th 10am at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in Upper Ferry with Father Desmond McGrath officiating. Interment followed at Mount St. Thomas Roman Catholic Cemetery in Great Codroy.

MacISAAC, PETER FEILAM
Passed away suddenly at his home in Cambridge, Ontario on June 21st 2000, Peter Feilam MacIsaac, in his 45th year. He leaves to mourn his wife, Cindy; two step-daughters, Jennifer and Bobbi-Jo; his sister, Helen (Eli) Anderson; his brothers, Tony (Eileen), Leonard (Bonnie), and Maurice (Martha) all of Doyles. He was predeacesed by his parents, Daniel and Veronica and his brothers, Edward, Robert and William. A memorial service was held at St. Anne’s Parish Church, Upper Ferry on August 19th. Interment of the cremains followed at Mount St. Thomas Cemetery in Great Codroy.

GALE, GORDON A.
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Gordon A. Gale, formerly of Codroy Valley, announce his passing at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre in Stephenville Crossing on June 23rd, 2000 at the age of 76 years. He will be sadly missed by his three sisters: Rita Doyle of Stephenville, Gertrude Gillis of Codroy Valley, Dorothy Oliver of New Waterford, NS, and one brother Robert (Mabel) Gale of Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents, Afra and Kate (Gillis) Gale and his brothers, Peter and Johnny Gale. Funeral Services took place on June 26th ,10:00am from St. Anne's RC Church in Codroy Valley with interment in the Mount St. Thomas Cemetery, Codroy Valley.

RYAN, KEVIN F.
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Kevin announce his death on August 22nd, 2000 at the Codroy Valley in his 24th year. He will be sadly missed by his parents, James and Irene (Smith); sisters, Karren in Ont., Kimberley and Darryl of Millville; brother, Kenneth and Loriann at Millville; brother-in-law, Shawn Colbourne of Codroy, Nephews, Dylan, Damien, Antonio and Tyson; a very special friend, Shantell O’Quinn. Funeral services took place August 25th 10am at St. Anne’s Church in Upper Ferry with Father Desmond McGrath officiating. Interment followed at Mount St. Thomas RC Cemetery, Great Codroy.

ANDERSON, ALFRED
Passed away at his home in Upper Ferry on August 12, 2000, Alfred Anderson, in his 68th year. He leaves to mourn his wife, Lucine; two children, Dion and wife Laura Lee of Edmonton, Nicholas of Coal Brook, NS; one grandchild; brothers, Joe and Doreen and john of Upper Ferry. He was predeceased by his sister, Anne, two brothers, Alex and Pius. Funeral services took place on August 16th 11 am at St. Anne’s Church in Upper Ferry with Father Desmond McGrath officiating. Interment followed at Mount St. Thomas RC Cemetery, Great Codroy.
