THE GAUDET FAMILY Jean Gaudet and Pelagie Cormier of Cheticamp, Cape Breton Island had 11 or 12 children and of these, the following came to Bay St. George, Newfoundland: Ignace who married Helene Marche and settled in the Stephenville area. Felicien who married Felicite Doucette and settled at Black Duck Brook on the Port au Port Peninsula. Fabian who married Frances Cormier and lived in the Stephenville area. Adele or Adelaide who married John Duffenais and settled in the Port au Port area. Marie-Domitille who married Louis Benoit and settled in the Port au Port area. Marie Osithe who married Augustus Reault (Rowe) and settled in the Port au Port area. The arrival of this family to Newfoundland is unclear, but it is believed to be about 1850. Marie Osithe was definitely at Bay St George in 1854 and a church entry states she was from Kippens. This family are direct descendants of Jean Gaudet born about 1575, of Martaize, department de Ia Vienne, France, Jean arrived in Acadia towards 1636 and married Miss Nicole Coleson. The above information was originally written by Allan Stride and published in the Newfoundland Ancestor, Vol. 3 no. 3, Summer 1987. The information was subsequently sent by Glenn MacDonald and Rick Gaudet to Cyril DuBourdieu who converted it to electronic form. The information was then transcribed and posted to the Internet in August 1998 by Stephen Baker. © 2004 NL GenWeb
