Les Bourgeois

Vers 1855, Charles-Raymond Bourgeois, natif de France et marie a une acadienne, 
est venu habiter la Baie-St-Georges. Ce M. Bourgeois est mort assez jeune, laissant
quelques enfants en bas age. L'un de ses fils, Damase, passa a St-Pierre et 
Miquelon, d'ou il s'engagea pour la peche sur les Grands Bancs, dans une goelette 
francaise. Il est devenu par la suite capitiane et a commande des goelette de perche 
pour des campagnies de St-Pierre jusqu'a sa mort. Il etait bien connu a Terre-Neuve, 
ou il venait souvent acheter de l'appat. Tout semble indiquer que les Bourgeois 
vivant presentement a Terre-Neuve sont des descendants de Charles-Raymond Bourgeois.

About 1855, Charles-Raymond Bourgeois, a native from France who was married to an 
Acadian, came to live in Bay St. George. This Mr. Bourgeois died rather young, 
leaving some infants. One of his sons, Damasse, went to St-Pierre and Miquelon, 
where he engaged in fishing off the Grand Banks in a French goelette. After a time, 
he became captain, controlling the fishing for companies of St-Pierre until his death. 
He was well-known in Newfoundland, where he often came to buy food. All seems to 
indicate that the Bourgeois men living at present in Newfoundland are descendants 
of Charles-Raymond Bourgeois.
