Passed away in Nanaimo BC, May 31st. Muriel Arman, age 76 years. Predeceased by her husband Leo; her parents Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Oldford; one grandson Michael. Leaving to mourn: two daughters: Valerie and Sherry; three sisters: Thelma (Woodrow) Roberts, Connie (Arch) Brewer, Corner Brook, Enid (Ian) Erskine, Ontario; two brothers: Don (Olive), Pasadena, Heber (Hazel), Ontario and numerous friends and relatives.
STUCKLESS, Garfield Corner Brook, NF Passed peacefully away at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Tuesday, July 6th, 1999, Garfield Stuckless at the age of 84 years. He will be sadly missed by his loving family: his wife of 52 years, Marion (nee Jefferies); daughters: Cindy and Dean Denomme of Brampton, Ont., Joan and Scott McDougall of Ottawa, Judy and Bob Stevenson of Sudbury, Ont., and Beverly and Dean Scott of Corner Brook; son, Rick and Kim Stuckless of Fredericton, NB; sister, Armine Sturge of Sarnia, Ont.; twin brother, Joseph and Gertrude of Kitchener, Ont.; 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild; in-laws: Earl and Mary Ann Jefferies of Deer Lake, Grace Serrick of St. John's, Joan O'Hara of Toronto, Merle and Don Osbourne of Quebec, and Ross and Louise Jefferies of Ontario. He will be also missed by a large circle of other relatives and friends. Mr. Stuckless was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Lenora; and by brothers: Robert and Archibald. Visitation will take place at Wellington Funeral Home, 31 Wellington Street, on Wednesday during the hours of 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 10-12 noon. The funeral service will take place on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. from the Pentecostal Tabernacle on Elizabeth Street with Pastor Fred Stacey officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery, Pentecostal section. Tributes may be made by sending flowers or by making donations to a charity of one's choice. DENNEY, Willard Ross Hampden August 18th, 1928 - July 6th, 1999 It is with great sadness that the family of the late Willard Ross Denney announce his passing on Tuesday, July 6th, 1999 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in his 70th year. He will be sadly missed by his children: Sheila Felker and friend Bill of Edmonton, Beverly (Mrs. Mervin Pilgrim), Donald and wife Joan, both of Hampden, Karen (Mrs. Dan Brake) of Fort McMurray, Christine Denney and friend Jerry of Ontario, and Ricky and wife Jackie of Fort McMurray. Nine grandchildren; his sister, Carrie (Mrs. Job Gale), his stepsisters: Sylvia (Mrs. Leander Osmond), both of Hampden, and Whilmenia (Mrs. Dwayne Eddy) of Ontario. His brother Leamond and wife Cora, stepbrothers: Boyce Osmond and Clyde and wife Gay, all of Ontario. Also a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean, in 1985. Willard Ross Denney was a member of the Loyal Orange Association and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #3, Deer Lake. Visitation will take place from the Salvation Army Church in Hampden today, Wednesday, where also funeral services will take place on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. with Lt. Keats officiating. SPENCER, John Gillam Corner Brook, NF The death of John Gillam Spencer of 6 Bayview Hgts., Corner Brook, NF., occurred July 4th, 1999 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital. He was born at Channel, Port aux Basques, July 4th, 1914, son of the late Charlotte (Hardy) and Stephen Spencer of Channel, Port aux Basques, (formerly from Cul-de-Sac and Cape La Hune). John was predeceased by his beloved wife Mary (May 26th, 1997). He is survived by his three sons: The Venerable John Spencer, Archdeacon of Huron and Perth, Stratford, Ontario, his wife Ruth (Parsons); grandchildren: Pamela, Lesley and her husband Daniel Cooper. His only great-grandchild Andrew John Cooper; son, Brian and Pam of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, and three grandchildren; Heidi, Kent and Kert; son, Barry of Saint-Louis-De-Kent, New Brunswick, his wife Marguerite/Margot (Valotaire); grandchildren: Caroline, Isabelle and Christine. He is predeceased by sisters: Julia (Battiste), Florence (Hillier), Lenora (Walters), Ester (Kettle), Susie (Coffin) and brothers, Steve, Jim and Richard. He is also survived by many special nieces and nephews. John was a resident of Corner Brook for the past 52 years. Before moving to Corner Brook he was a member of the merchant Navy from 1938-1948 and served on the following Merchant Navy Ships during the 2nd World War, SS Humber Arm (1938-1940), RMS Nerissa (1940-1941), SS Curacao (1941), SS Waterton (1941-1942), MV Preventor (1942-1944), SS Sandland (1944-1948). After being torpedoed three times he came ashore in 1948 and became employed as a manager of the Westmount Club where he worked for 35 years. John was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 and The Cabot Masonic Lodge 13, Port aux Basques and the Corner Brook Men's Service Club. Friends are invited to visit Wellington Funeral Home, 31 Wellington Street, Wednesday, July 7th during the hours of 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Cathedral on Main Street, Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Very Rev. Lorne Gosse officiating. The interment will take place at the Anglican Section of Mount Patricia Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Mary Spencer Gift Shop at the O'Connell Centre, St. John the Evangelist Anglican Cathedral restoration fund, to the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Foundation or to the charity of one's choice.
HOUSE, Lawrence W. Port Saunders, NF January 1st, 1925 - July 1st, 1999 It is with great sadness that the family of the late Lawrence W. House announce his passing on Thursday, July 1st, 1999 at Rufus Guinchard Health Centre in his 74th year. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Violet nee Snow), one son; Wayne & wife Gloria of Port Saunders. Two daughters, Rona (Mrs. Peter Hewlin) of St. Anthony and Cavell (Mrs. Randy Gould) of Port aux Choix, 4 grandchildren, Ian & Andrea Gould, and Laurie & Kayla Hewlin, one sister Stella (Mrs. John Caines) of Port Saunders, his brother-in-law Ronald Batten of Corner Brook, one step-son Paul Aylward & wife Natalie of British Columbia, three step-daughters Audrey (Mrs. Marvin Lambe) of Ontario, Mrs. Rose McLean and Gloria (Mrs. Allen Manuel) both of Cambellton, also a large circle of step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his first wife Martha (nee Pynn) on June 10th, 1984. Visitation took place from his family residence in Port Saunders on Saturday, July 3rd, 1999. Funeral services took place on Sunday, July 4th, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Rumbolt officiating. Interment followed at the family plot in Sandy Cove. JOHNSON, Norman Corner Brook, NF It is with great sadness and regret that the family of the late Mr. Norman Johnson announce his passing at the Interfaith Home for Seniors on Thursday, July 1st, 1999, at the age of 83 years. He will be sadly missed by his loving family; his dear daughter, Maisie and her husband Howard Dawson residing at Scarborough, ON; brother, George Johnson residing at London, England; sister, Irene and husband Joe Waldron residing at Deer Lake; sisters-in-law, Frances Tavener, Mary Tavener, Alice Tavener and Gwendolyn Butt all of Corner Brook and also by several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Constance in 1988. GREENING, Mary Edna (Edith) Corner Brook, NF It is with great sadness that the family of the late Edith Greening announce her peaceful passing at her residence on Friday, July 2nd, 1999 in her 87th year. She was predeceased by her husband Albert Thomas Greening in 1988, and son Norman Greening. RINGLER, Leonard L. Aged 78 O'Regan's, NF (formerly of Pennsylvania, USA) It is with great sadness that the family of the late Leonard L. Ringler announce his passing at his residence in O'Regan's on July 1st, 1999 in his 78th year. He leaves to mourn his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Mary (nee Ryan) Ringler; four brothers-in-law: William, Raymond, Alex and Walter Ryan; one sister-in-law, Jenny (nee Ryan) Mercer; also a circle of relatives and friends. CROCKER, Alfreda E. Trout River, NF Passed away Tuesday, June 29th, 1999, at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Corner Brook, Alfreda Elizabeth Crocker at the age of 79. He was predeceased by his brother Reginald and sister Jennie Fudge. She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Lewis; her two daughters: Janice (Greg) of Stephenville, and Jackie (Mrs. Gary McCarthy) of Brampton, Ontario; three granddaughters: Jennifer, Jenita and Jill; two sisters: Alma Bishop of Portersville, NF, and Shirley (Mrs. Robert Riddering) of Mississauga, Ontario; two brothers: Chester (Lynn) and Aubrey (Alberta), bother of Whitby, Ontario; five brothers-in-law: Ralph (Emily) of Corner Brook, Randolph (Cluda), James (Carrie), both of Hampden, Douglas (Eileen) and Howard (Whillmenia) both of Ontario; four sisters-in-law: Golda of Nova Scotia, Julie (James), Shelia (Wayne) and Adelaide, all of Hampden. Also a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her two brothers-in-law: Harold and James. Doyle was a former counselor of the city of Corner Brook from 1978-1981, and served as Deputy Mayor from 1982-1985, he was vice president of the Humber Joint Council from 1981-1983, 1984-1985, former president of the Concerned Citizens Committee, and he was employed at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Middle Management from 1951-1983. Doyle will be sadly missed by his loving wife Ella (nee: Young); five sons: Derek, Kitchener, Ont., Neil and special friend Shelly, Kitchener, Ont., Raymond and wife Joan, Corner Brook, Wayne, Corner Brook, Nelson and wife Barbara, Corner Brook; three daughters: Valetta and husband Gerald Pinder, Kitchener, Ont., Carol and husband Dave Sztorc, Kitchener, Ont., Valda and husband Glenn Wheeler, Corner Brook; thirteen grandchildren: Beverly, Nancy, Brandon, Shane, Leanne, Cathy, Stephen, Jason, Sheldon, Renee, Clyde, Michelle, Christopher; six great grandchildren; he will also be missed by numerous other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Mabel Rose, of Stephenville, November 26, 1997. ALLEY, Mildred Age 91, a resident of Cleveland, died Wednesday evening at the family residence following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Alley was a native of Newfoundland, Canada. She was the daughter of the late Eliza Russell Purdy and Thomas Purdy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Alley of Cleveland, her daughter, Rita Candow of Nova Scotia and by her grandson, Gregory Farr of Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Alley was of the Episcopal Faith. 1973-1999 Danielle C. Gillis, of Sechelt, BC, passed away as a result of a mountain bike accident in Sechelt, BC, (Wilson Creek) on Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at the age of 25 years. Born on December 18, 1973 in Moncton, NB, she was the daughter of Rory and Maria (Follett) Gillis of Riverview, NB. Danielle was a dedicated and highly principled officer with the Sechelt RCMP Detachment, where she was posted following her graduation in October 1997. Danielle excelled in all levels of sport and in her professional and personal life; she was community and youth oriented. She was a 1995 graduate and a member of the Dean's List of St. Mary's University where she received a BA and a Certificate in Criminology. She played rugby and hockey at the university. Danielle was a former member of the 56th Field Engineers in St. John's, NF and a member of the Princess Louise Hussars in Moncton. In addition to general detachment duties, Danielle was a S.O.C.O. (Scene of Crime Officer) for Forensic Ident. for the Sechelt Detachment. She will be lovingly remembered by her parents, Rory and Maria Gillis; her maternal grandmother, Cecille Follet of Corner Brook, NF; one brother, Trent Gillis of Oromocto, NB; two sisters, Cara Gillis of Halifax, NS and Cynthia Gillis at home; and by several aunts, uncles and cousins. MARTIN, Austin Joseph The passing of Austin Joseph Martin occurred on Tuesday, May 19, 1999 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Born on April 25, 1911, Austin was a native of Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and was predeceased by his beloved wife, Josephine (Colley), four years ago. He is survived by his only son Robert and wife Margaret (Pepper) and granddaughters Allison and Andrea, all of Fredericton. A loving and gentle father and grandfather, Austin will be missed dearly. He will be laid to rest next to his late wife and true love, Josephine, in the Anglican Cemetery in Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. BROWN/GRZYBOWSKI, Maureen T.

Passed peacefully away on May 17, 1999, at Vancouver General Hospital Palliative Care, Maureen T. Brown/Grzybowski (nee Dunphy), after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. She was sixty-two. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her first husband, Ross E. Brown of Amherst, NS, in 1963, and by her late husband, Dr. Stefan Grzybowski of Vancouver, BC, in 1997. Mrs. Brown was the daughter of Isabella MacLellan and Alexander M. Dunphy of Curling, NF. Mrs. Brown's early education began in Curling, NF, where she graduated from Holy Cross High School. In 1959, she received her R.N. from the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing, and then her Diploma in Public Health Nursing from UBC in 1966, followed by a BSc in Nursing from Mount Saint Vincent University, in 1969. She received her Masters degree from Johns Hopkins Univ. in Maryland in 1974. Mrs. Brown's career as a World Health Consultant brought her many awards and made her an extraordinary ambassador for Canada and for Newfoundland in particular. For the past twenty-five years, she worked in third world developing countries in South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. In the 1970's, her work as director-team Leader for the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) on the Quang Ngai TB Project in Vietnam, was well known, As was her work in Nepal, where as leader for the Surkhet Auxiliary Health Project, Mrs. Brown had full responsibility for planning and implementing a rural health worker-training program, as well as the responsibility of developing a primary health care system for rural areas. In the 1980's, her work brought her to Bangladesh, Yemen and Egypt. While working for the Univ. of North Carolina's School of Medicine in 1989, Mrs. Brown and Party, successfully established a Primary Health Care Nursing Institute in Amman, Jordan. For this, she received an award of excellence from Jordan's Minister of Health. Ironically, it was in Amman, Jordan, in November, 1998, completing her last career assignment, that Mrs. Brown's illness was first detected. In 1991, she received the Order of Canada. Maureen Brown was predeceased by her parents, and by her two brothers, Thomas and Alex, and a baby sister, Phyllis. She will be sadly missed by her many friends worldwide, and her large and loving family. Left to mourn are her three brothers, Raymond J. of St. Margaret's Bay, NS, Ronald J. of Corner Brook, NF, John A. of Steady Brook, NF, and her brother-in-law, Frank G. Huck of Hilton Head Island, SC. And, by her three sisters, Doreen Fitzpatrick, St. John's, NF, Sheila Huck, Hilton Head Island, SC, and Isabel J. Kaj of Corner Brook, NF; and her four sisters-in-law, Mary Coombs in Edmonton, Alberta, Dorothea Coleman, Mary Burton and Eunice Randall of Corner Brook, NF; and her three stepsons, Stefan, Julian and Alex Grzybowski, and stepdaughter, Jane Patrick, all of BC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and grandchildren. A small, private service, consisting of a mass of Christian Burial, will take place at the UBC Chapel by Rev. Klausterman. Date and times will be announced later. The interment will take place sometime in early August, 1999, in the family Parish Church in Curling, NF, where a special concelebrated Memorial Service will be held to celebrate her life and death. Predeceased by his sister Christina, grandmother Mary Buckle and grandfathers: William Buckle and Edward Baldwin; father-in-law James S. Saunders. Visitation will take place from Fillatre's Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark's Avenue on Monday from the hours of 4-5:00 p.m. and 7-9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 18th, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. from All Hallows Roman Catholic Church, Humber Road, Mons. Boone officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Janeway Children Fund.
GRANT, Dr. George A. March 24, 1923 - May 13, 1999 Passed away, in the presence of his family, at St. Clare's Hospital, St. John's, Dr. George Grant (born Glasgow, Scotland). Left with loving memories wife, Margaret, daughters: Alison Grant-Powell (Don) Stephenville, Gillian Grant (Gerry Donovan), St. John's and Fiona Grant, St. John's, grandchildren Alexandra Grant and Callum Donovan, St. John's; honorary grandchildren Sari and Kati Piros in Stephenville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. Open house to be held at the Arts and Culture Centre Tuesday, May 18, 1999 between 7 and 9 p.m.
