Curling - Petries Point Congregational Cemetery

Information was compiled by MICHAEL BARBOUR, June 1999. While I have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be errors .
This cemetery is much of a mystery in the Bay of Islands area. All that remains today, is a single headstone which reads:

Erected in memory of Joseph Brake who died Aug. 1, 1850 age 39 years. Also his wife Mary died 25 July 1850 age 32 years.

However, there has been much discussion about whether or not this could have been the location of the Congregational group which was lead by Prosper Companion (see "Visits" section under Father Belanger). Most have drawn the conclusion that this is the location of Companion's group. There may have been as many as 20 headstones in this area, including one for the original resident of the Bay of Islands:

Sacred to the memory of Jane Brake who departed this life August the 23 1819, age 46 years. Sacred to the memory of Ralph Brake who departed this life May 4, 1842, age 82 years.

It should be noted that much of this material is taken from information provided by local residents.
