NL GenWebWest Coast Region ~ Bay of Islands DistrictJohn's Beach - St. Ambrose Anglican CemeteryThe St. Ambrose Anglican Church was founded in 1866, and was the first of any denomination built in the area. Rev. U. Z. Rule, a missionary who arrived in Birchy Cove (Curling) in 1865 began overseeing the construction of St. Ambrose the following year. It was completed in 1867. St. Ambrose was presumably lost in the fire of 1870 at Birchy Cove which destroyed the church property and most of the records of Rev. Rule's incumbency there. A new building replaced the older structure in 1954. The Cemetery is lo cated on a steep incline, next to the Church, and overlooking the Bay. It was active from 1869 until the present.Inscriptions were transcribed by DEBBIE BRAKE, May 1999 with MICHAEL BARBOUR formatting the work for presentation.
