Transcriber's notes on the census

It looks as if fishing boat capacity was measured in quintals, not in tons. The writing is definitely qtls. There are problems with the number of members of religious denominations exceeding the number of inhabitants (i.e. at Indian Burying Place). The following notes are based on checking the census transcription against the entries for the various communities in the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador (ENL), and surname entries in Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland by E. R. Seary (FN). They are supplemented, in the section on Fortune Harbour, by notes from John Carrick Greene`s Of Fish and Family. These extracts illustrate the difficulties created by surname variations. Thanks are due to Dave Anstey and Jill Marshall for their transcriptions, which were helpful in deciphering some of the trickier entries.

The George Windsor recorded at Tilt Cove was probably connected to the Solomon Windsor recorded at Tilt Cove in 1849.

The Giles Ridout at Tilt Cove may be connected to the Alfred Rideout at Tilt Cove, recorded in 1855.

ENL
George Windsor is recorded here. "During boom periods most homes were built inland, around the shores of Windsor Lake. Windsor Lake was named for George Windsor, a former schoolteacher from the West Country of England who settled at Tilt Cove in about 1814. Tradition has it that all that could be seen by passing boats was Windsor`s fishing shack (or tilt) on the beach and that this is what gave Tilt Cove its name. Of the 12 offspring of George Windsor, 11 married and spread throughout Notre Dame Bay. The 1836 census shows only two fishermen, Windsor and Giles Rideout and their families, resident in the community, for a total population of 16.

"Surnames associated with Tilt Cove in the early mining years [the late 1800s], included Adams, Bartlett, Blackmore, Butler, Clarke, Colbourne, Dicks, Dove, Drover, Eveleigh, Fudge, Giles, Hearn, Hedd, Johnson, Judge, King, Locke, MacKey, Martin, Mitchell, Neville, Noble, Oake, Payne, Pollard, Prole, Pynn, Rendell, Richards, Roberts, Sacrey, Short, Starkes, Stoodley, Tilley, Thomas, Toms, Vickers, Walsh, Welshman, White and Young....some were from nearby communities."
