Transcriber's notes on the census

It looks as if fishing boat capacity was measured in quintals, not in tons. The writing is definitely qtls. There are problems with the number of members of religious denominations exceeding the number of inhabitants (i.e. at Indian Burying Place). The following notes are based on checking the census transcription against the entries for the various communities in the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador (ENL), and surname entries in Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland by E. R. Seary (FN). They are supplemented, in the section on Fortune Harbour, by notes from John Carrick Greene`s Of Fish and Family. These extracts illustrate the difficulties created by surname variations. Thanks are due to Dave Anstey and Jill Marshall for their transcriptions, which were helpful in deciphering some of the trickier entries.

NIPPER'S HARBOUR

FN
According to FN, family traditions state that "Thomas Starkes (1799-1869), from Fordingbridge (Hampshire), settled at Nippers Harbour (Green B.), between 1820 and 1830 (MUN Geog.). William, from Yorkshire, settled at Nippers Harbour (MUN Folklore)." A George Starks was recorded at Nippers Harbour in 1860.

A John Noble, "merchant of St John's, 1794-5, operated salmon fishery at Nippers Harbour, 1804 (Census 1794-5)". This may be the John Sr. recorded here. FN notes that the modern status of the Noble name is "Scattered, especially at Nipper's Harbour." It also notes that in family tradition, "John, from England, came to Newfoundland at an early age and settled at Nipper's Harbour (Green B.) (MUN Folklore)."

There are no Sticklands or Stricklands recorded at Nipper's Harbour.

There is no record of the last name Dolling. The name Dolland is recorded as "Rare, at Nipper's Harbour (Electors 1955)." A John Dolland is recorded at Nipper's Harbour on the 1921 Census, as is a Samuel Dolland.

FN records a "John Langdonna or Langdown" at Nipper's Harbour in 1842, but no Richard Langdown.

A John Bower was recorded at Nipper's Harbour in 1844, but there is no record of Thomas Bower.

The FN records a William Andrews at Nipper's Harbour in 1847, but does not mention John Andrews.

The James King of Nipper's Harbour is also recorded in Family Names in 1845.

ENL
"Continuous settlement is thought to date from the late 1700s, when a West Country firm operating out of Twillingate, John Slade and Co., established a fishing post there. Two of the first known settlers were [John] Slade's agents in 1804, John Rideout and John Noble. Noble remained at Nippers Harbour. Thomas Starkes from Fordingbridge, Hampshire was sent out around 1820 as his servant, eventually marrying one of his daughters. In 1991 Starkes and Noble were still the community's dominant family names. The Rideouts moved on from Nippers Harbour to become one of the most common family names elsewhere in Green Bay."

By 1869, family names included "Batstone, Bowers, Dollond, Langdown, Noble, Pittman, Randell and Starkes ...Principal family names in 1991 were Bowers, Noble, Perry, Prole, Randell and Starkes."
