Jan 1st, 1904 Friday Thermometer at noon 26°
The first day of 1904 has been a fine, sunny day; wind in the morning and early evening (it is
now South) North West. Mean temp today from 9 am to 6 pm 21.25°. Charles Chipley from
Hauling Point and John Stuckless from Pumbly were here to the store today. There is church
tonight; all our folk have gone except Ernest and I. Therm at 9 pm 22°.


Jan 2nd, 1904 Saturday Thermometer at noon 17°
A very cold, frosty day modified in the morning by the sun. The thermometer registered 11° at 6
pm (21° of frost). Mean temp 14.5°. I have not been out much today as one of my eyes is sore.
Not many people about today. Wind today North West. Therm at 9 pm 10° (22° of frost).


Jan 3rd, 1904 Sunday Thermometer at noon

Jan 4th, 1904 Monday Thermometer at noon 14°
Yesterday, Sunday was a dull, cloudy, frosty day, snowing all the evening and last night. Mean
temp 5.75°. Yesterday was the frostiest day up to date. This morning it was very rough and
cold, the wind being North West. Therm at 9 am 6°. It is a little finer this evening. Therm at 3
pm 11°. A school of seals seen by the people of Western Cove. I did not attend Church at all
yesterday. I was very busy today attending to my Post Office work. Mean temp today 10.25°
(21.75° of frost). This evening it is still blowing a gale of wind from the N.N. West. There have
been several persons here to the store this evening in spite of the rough weather. Therm at 6 pm
10°. Therm at 9 pm 7°. A fine starlight night.


Jan 5th, 1904 Tuesday Thermometer at noon 13°
A fine, clear day but very cold and windy. The wind is still North West. Mean day temp
12.75° (19.25° of frost). We have had quite a lot of cold, windy weather lately. The Cove is full
of slob ice now. The wind seems to be dropping a little tonight. Therm at 9 pm tonight 14° (18°
of frost).


Jan 6th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at 3.00 pm 23°
A fine, sunny day with a strong breeze of wind from the North West. Mean temp 21.5°. This
being the “Epiphany”, Mr. Wood held prayers twice during the day.I was in to Samuel Jacobs’
tilt this evening. Robert and Samuel Jacobs took up their seal net this evening and they had one
seal in it. The ice in the Cove is now fit to walk on, as we were on it this evening.


Jan 7th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 27°
Not a bad day on the whole; the sun having shown out at times during the day. Wind today
South West. Mean temp today 25.75°. I have been reading to John Jacobs today. Samuel and
Mrs. Jacobs are out here visiting Mother and Father tonight. Father and William Jacobs were
sawing wood all the morning. The therm reached 28° at noon; it has gone down a little this
evening; it is now 6 pm 25°.


Jan 8th, 1904 Friday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 24°
A fine, sunny day, very moderate with light breeze. South West in the evening. East in the
morning. Mean temp today 18.5°. I have been studying Arithmetic today. Ernest and I sawed a
few turns of word this evening. One Hauling Point man up here this morning. Therm at 6 pm
10° (22° of frost)


Jan 9th, 1904 Saturday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 25°
A dull, cloudy day with several snow storms; wind for the greater part of the day East South
East. Mean temp 23.5°. The weather seems to be turning mild again. At 6 pm the therm
registered 28°. It is snowing fast tonight. The ice that was in the Cove has cleared out this
evening. Therm at 9 pm 31°. The mean day temp from 9 pm during this week is 16.6° (15.4° of
frost); the coldest week at the present time.


Jan 10th, 1904 Sunday Mean temperature 36.5°

Jan 11th, 1904 Monday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 32°
Yesterday, Sunday 10th, was a dull, cloudy day, very mild with a wet snow at times; wind South
South East. I went to Church in the morning but I stayed home in the evening to write to Uncle
James Lockyer of Herring Neck. First, this morning it was snowing but the weather has cleared
up a little now, noon, it has stopped snowing but it is blowing a gale of wind from the North
East; therm at noon today 33°. Young Lacey was down here from Purbeck’s Cove this morning
enquiring from me when there would be an “over-land mail” going. Snowing all the evening.
This evening there were some peculiar birds, called by the people here Seal birds flying about;
Father killed three of them and young John Jacobs caught one alive, which he is going to tame.
Mean temp 31.5°. I began to read “The Christian” by Hall Cane to old John Jacobs this evening.
This morning I began to learn short hand. Therm at 9 pm 29°.


Jan 12th, 1904 Tuesday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 30°
A splendid, fine, sunny day, also very moderate. They say the Bay is full of Northern slob ice s
the Steamer will not get here after all. Mean day temp 25°. Max. temp today at noon 33°. Mr.
and Mrs. Wood were to the house this evening. I tested my thermometer by salt and snow
mixed, and it proved correct having reached 0° of Frh. There is no doubt, but that this has been
the finest day this winter.


Jan 13th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 23°
Very cloudy all day, The Bay is now full of ice. This wind today has been south west. The
Hurleys and Jacobs have been hauling wood for us today. There were prayers tonight but Ernest
and I did not attend. Mean day temp 19°. People here today from Purbeck’s Cove and Pumbly
Cove. I have not studied much today having spent my time reading. Mean temp 17° which I
get by taking the mean of the thermometer at 9 am and 9 pm.


Jan 14th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 23°
A dull, cloudy day. Moderate. What wind there is being South East. Mean day temp 21.25°.
Father and Mother are gone up to the Parsonage to tea this evening. Samuel Hurley had Ernest’s
dog in harness today hauling wood. The weather seems to be turning milder again. I have had
no time at my lessons today. I have been out about a great deal today having gone down to
where Sam Hurley and Breen are hauling the wood from. Mean temp altogether 23.5°. Therm at
9 pm 31°.


Jan 15th, 1904 Friday Thermometer 34°
Weather variable, sometimes fine and sunny; then again cloudy with snow squalls. Wind about
South West. Mean day temp 32.5°. Mr. Wood sent me one of his thermometers to test mine by
last night by Father. Today, I did so and I find that mine is correct. Hurley and Jacobs still
hauling wood today. Ernest and young John Jacobs were up on the hill tobogganing with Mrs.
Wood this evening. I attended Church tonight. Mean temp altogether 31.5°.


Jan 16th, 1904 Saturday Thermometer at noon 21°
A fine, sunny day; the wind being North West, it is very frosty. Mr. Wood went to Hauling
Point this evening to keep prayers tomorrow. The Ricketts and Hewitts, who were to Bay of
Islands all the Fall herring catching, arrived home yesterday; the rickets and several Bay of
Islands men who came with them were down here today. The Hurleys and Jacobs finished
hauling our wood today. Mean day temp 17.5°. Mean temp altogether 16.5°. The mean temp for


this week is 24.43°.

Jan 18th, 1904 Monday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 21°
Yesterday was a dull, cloudy day; afternoon it came on to snow and it soon became very rough;
the wind Eastern. Mr. Wood could not get down to Bear Cove so there were prayers here
yesterday. Mean temp altogether 19.5°.
This has been a rough day on the whole as the snow is very light; wind today North. Mean temp
12.75°. I have been busy today fixing up the mail which I intend to send by Samuel Hurley to
Baie Verte via Seal Cove; Samuel will be leaving tomorrow. Ernest and young John Jacobs are
up to the Parsonage tonight helping Mr. Wood about his fire-works. Mean temp8° ( 26° of
frost). Therm at 9 o’clock tonight 2° (30° of frost).

Jan 19th, 1904 Tuesday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 9°
A cloudy, frosty day on the whole although this evening it cleared up and the sun shone out
about 3 pm. This has been the frostiest day during this winter. Mean day temp 4.5°. Samuel
Hurley left with the mail this morning but he had to return as she could not get across Wild Cove
Bight. Therm at 9 pm 1° (31° of frost). The Western Cove men have been hauling wood for the
Parson today. Williams and Darius Jacobs are gone in the country. Wind, what little there was
South West, now 7 pm; it is South East. They are at the fire-works making in the Parsonage
again tonight. Mean temp altogether –0.5° (32.5° of frost) Therm at 9 pm -2° two° below zero.
A cold and frosty day.


Jan 20th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer 16°
A fine sunny day, the sky being free of clouds nearly all day; wind South West. Mean day temp
8.5°. Ernest and I were up to the Parsonage this evening. John Small arrived with a large mail
from Baie Verte this evening. The first mail his year. Sam Hurley will be leaving this Monday
to catch the mail arriving at Baie Verte every Wednesday. I will have no time to read any news
tonight. Mr. Woods thermometer was broken down to 16° below zero last night. Mean temp
altogether 3° (29° of frost).


Jan 21st, 1904 Thursday Thermometer 16°
A fine, sunny day on the whole although at times during the day it has been rather cloudy; wind
today South west. Mean day temp 13.5°. People here today from Hauling Point, Wild Cove and
young Lacey from Purbeck’s Cove, William and Darius Jacobs came out of the country this
evening without getting any fur. I have been reading “Self Raised Or From the Depths” being a
continuation of “Ishmael” which I read in December 1903; the work is by Mrs. Southworth, an
American writer; it is one of the best books I have read: I mean, of course, among Novels. Mean
temp altogether 10° (22° of frost).


Jan 22nd, 1904 Friday Thermometer 8°
A fine sunny day: wind NN West: very cold & frosty. Mean day temp 5°. People here today
from Hauling Point, The Bottom Of The Bay, and Purbeck’s Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Wood were
down here this evening. I have been reading the news papers nearly all day: I see by them that
there is grave danger of a war breaking out between Russia and Japan which will affect the
whole world as England is bound by treaty to help Japan. Mean temp altogether 2°.


Jan 23rd 1904 Saturday Thermometer at 1:30 pm 19°
A dull cloudy day: sometimes snowing a little: A slight change in the weather: the day temp
15.5°. This has been a rather busy day with me: getting the mail ready to start Monday morning.
William and Darius Jacobs killed a seal this morning. No one from outside here today except R.
Lacey who was down here from Purbeck’s Cove to post his Fathers letters. My first over-land
mail this year contains 89 letters.. Mean temp altogether 13.5°. Mean temp for this week, 7.9°:
the coldest week this winter


Jan. 24th Sunday Thermometer

Jan 25th Monday Thermometer at 1:30 pm 19°
Yesterday, Sunday 24th’ for the most part a dull, cloudy day’ Parson Wood held prayers at
Hauling Point yesterday. Mean temp altogether 27°; day temp 28°. Wind yesterday South.
This has been a very windy day: and through the wind and a little light snow that fell last night, it
has been rough at times; at other times it has been fine altho’ rather cloudy. The men from
Hauling Point were up here today hauling wood for Parson. Samuel Hurley started off for Baie
Verte with the mail this morning. People here today from Hauling Point & Clay Cove. Day temp
18.75°. Mean temp altogether 17°.

Jan. 26th, 1904 Tuesday Thermometer 16°
A cloudy day; fine in the morning, rough and snowing a little this evening. Wind today about
West. Day temp 12.75°. Not many people here today. Mean temp altogether 10°

Jan 27th, 1904, Wednesday Thermometer 12°
Morning dull and cloudy, but no snow: Evening snowing very fast until 6:00 pm, after that it was
finer. Wind south and east. Day temp 12.5°: Mean temp about 12°. The only person here from
outside was John Stuckless of Pumbly Cove. Stephen, Jim and William Jacobs were cutting
wharf-sticks for the Government wharf. I have been to church tonight, afterwards I was reading
to William.

Jan 28th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer 8°
It is a very blustery day; there being a gale of wind from North North West therefore the snow
that fell yesterday has been drifting about day temp8°. This is a fine moonlight night but very
cold the glass being down to 5° (27° of frost). The Bay & Cove is full of ice again. Mean temp
8°. Therm at 9:00 pm 5°.

Jan 29th, 1904 Friday Thermometer at 1:30 pm 7°
A fine sunny day, hardly a cloud in the sky for the whole day: also frosty day temperature 5.25°.
the thermometer was down to zero at 6:00 pm. Nearly all of the Western Cove men have been
cutting Wharf-sticks today. R Lacey of Purbeck’s Cove was down here this morning. This is a
splendid night but very cold and frosty. Wind today North North West. The mailman, Samuel
Hurley arrived tonight about 7:00 pm. Mean temp 3°. Therm at 9 pm 2° below zero –2°. Samuel
will be leaving here with the mail from this time out on Tuesdays.

Jan 30th, 1904 Saturday Thermometer 8°
A fine, sunny day; wind North West. The thermometer was at zero at 9 am this morning. I have
been reading the newspapers today. Although this was a cold, frosty day, there were some
women here from Hauling Point. Mean day temp 5°. The Russia-Japan situation is still
unchanged. Mean temp altogether 1° (31° of frost). Mean temp for this week 11 – 13°, rather
higher than last week.

Feb 1st, 1904 Monday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 36°
Yesterday, Sunday 31st of January was not a sunny day as the sky was rather cloudy, but it
brought a change in the weather, Mean altogether temp 15°; wind yesterday South West. Mean
temp of the air during January 14.72° (17.28° of frost) Therm last night 20°. The 19th of
January had the coldest mean temp being –0.5°, the 10th being the mildest with a mean temp of
33.5° which makes a difference of 34° between these two days.
This has been a mild day; in the morning, it was cloudy but this evening it has been snowing all
the evening. Mean day temp 34.25°, nearly all the Western Cove men were out sealing this
morning. As Ernest was not well today, Father sawed the wood. Mean temp altogether 31.5°.

Feb 2nd, 1904 Tuesday Thermometer
A very rough windy day; the wind being North West, the snow that fell last night has been
drifting about today making it very rough. Samuel Hurley started off with the mail this morning.
Mean temp altogether 14.5°. I have been reading to John Jacobs this evening, and tonight therm
at 9 pm 2° (30° of frost). This has been the roughest day this present winter so far.

Feb 3rd, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer 14°
Morning fine and part of the time sunny; evening snowing; wind in the morning South West.
There was no church this evening as the Parson thought it too snowy. Day temp 9.75°, mean
temp altogether 8.5°.


Feb 4th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer 6°
On the whole, a fine sunny day, although very cold and at times the light snow that fell last
evening has been drifting. Mean day temp 3.75°, the coldest day this winter. Therm at 6 pm 1°
below zero. Ernest is gone up to the Parsonage tonight – fireworks making. Mean temp
altogether 0.5°. Therm at nine pm –5° which is 37° of frost, the lowest I have recorded this
winter; 5° below zero is very cold weather.


Feb 5th, 1904 Friday Thermometer 13°
Morning on the whole fine although rather cloudy; snowing all evening. Them at 9 am this
morning 3° below zero. Day temp 4°. At present, 6 pm it is still snowing. Samuel Hurley
arrived from Baie Verte with the mail this evening. William Jacobs killed a seal this evening.
We did not get much of a mail this time at any rate. There being no prayers tonight, Ernest and
John have gone up at the fire-working making. Mean temp altogether –1°. Two or three flashes
of lightning seen tonight which is strange this time of the year and attended by such cold
weather. Therm at 9 pm 1°.


Feb 6th, 1904 Saturday Thermometer at 1.30 pm -3°
A fine sunny day but very, very frosty; in fact the coldest day we have had this winter. Day temp
– 6.5° below zero. The highest temperature recorded today was 12.30 pm zero. Therm at 6 pm –
13° below zero; at 7 pm –14° below zero, at 8 pm –16° below zero, at 9 pm –16° below zero.
Mean temp altogether – 11° below zero. Mean temp this week 8.14°. Mr. Wood went to
Hauling Point this evening to hold service there tomorrow. Some of the men have been out
sealing today in spite of the cold weather.

Feb 8th, 1904 Monday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 2°
Yesterday, Sunday 7th, was a fine sunny day although very cold and frosty. There were no
prayers here yesterday, as Mr. Wood was down to Hauling Point. Day temp –3.5°. Mean temp
– 10° below zero. Therm at 9 pm – 12° (44° of frost). Therm highest 2°, lowest – 12°.
Today has been thick and cloudy, snowing nearly all the morning. Therm at 9 am 2°, at noon
16°. Several people here today from outside.
Feb 8th, Monday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 14°
Evening same as morning until 5 pm when the weather cleared. It is a bright starlight night
tonight. Therm at 6 pm 2°. Mean day temp 7.25°. I am busy tonight getting the mail ready to
start in the morning. Ernest is gone up to the Parsonage at the fireworks making tonight. Mean
temp altogether –1° below. Wind Eastern today. Therm at 9 pm – 4° below zero.

Feb 9th, 1904 Tuesday Thermometer 16°
Clear and fine although the sky has been rather cloudy al day. Wind South West. Samuel
Hurley left here at 8 am for Baie Verte with the mail. There has been a good breeze of wind all
day; mean temp 11.5°. Ernest is gone up at the firework making again tonight. Therm at 6 pm
8°. Mean temp altogether 6.5°. Therm at 9 pm 4°.

Feb 10th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 21°
Fine until about 3 pm when it come on to snow; the sky has been rather cloudy all day. The
weather has not been very cold today. Mean temp for day from 9 am to 6 pm 16.5°. Ernest has
been sick today and I myself have not been very well as I took pills last night , so neither of us
have been able to attend prayers tonight. Some of the Western Cove men got seals today. Mean
temp (day and night temperature) 15.5°. Western Cove people here today from Purbeck’s Cove
and Pumbly Cove. Therm at 9 pm 22°, the weather is evidently getting milder. No church,
Mother and Father visited the Parsonage.


Feb 11th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 33°
This has been a fine day; also very mild until 6 pm when the weather became colder. Mean day
temp 28.5°. Thomas Jacobs was married to Sophia Huett in Western Cove Church this evening.
Mr. Wood held a magic lantern service in the church tonight. Mean temp altogether 21.5°.
Father was down to Pound Cove this morning to attend Murray’s factory. I suppose the mailman
will get back tomorrow evening.


Feb 12th, 1904 Friday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 26°
A fine sunny day; wind South West. Day temp 20.5°. People here today from Jackson’s Arm,
Middle Arm and two men came here this morning from Baie Verte on their way to Jackson’s
Arm. Samuel Hurley arrived with the Western Cove mail this morning. I see by the newspapers
that the Japan-Russia situation is very grave; there is dander of a big war coming out of it yet.
Mean temp altogether 12°. Therm at 9 pm 11° (21° of frost).


Feb 13th, 1904 Saturday Thermometer 20°
A fine sunny day, hardly a cloud in the sky; wind North West, day temp 15.5°. People here
today from the ‘Bottom Of The Bay’, Pumbly Cove, and R. Lacey from Purbeck’s Cove. Some
of the Western Cove men have been on the ice, sealing today. Parson Wood was down here this
morning. I had orders by this mail to send the Jackson’s Arm mail which has been lying in this
office nearly a month across. Stephen and Joseph Jacobs will start off with it on Monday. Mean
temp altogether day and night 9°. Mean temp for this week 7.8°, the lowest temperature to date.


Feb 14th, 1904 Sunday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 24°

Feb 15th, 1904 Monday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 31°
Yesterday, Sunday 14th was a fine sunny day on the whole, but toward night it became cloudy;
day temp 16.25°; mean temp 9°. I attended church in the morning and afternoon. Ambrose
Sparks who came from Baie Verte Saturday brought the news that Japan and Russia began war
on Wednesday, 10th inst. On the whole, the sky has been full of clouds but in other respects it
has been a fair day; day temp 26.5°. Lacey and son have been down here from Purbeck’s Cove
today. William and Darius Jacobs killed a seal this evening. I am busy tonight preparing the
mail for Sam Hurley in the morning. Mean temp altogether 23°. Therm at 9 pm 24°.


Feb 16th, 1904 Tuesday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 42°
First part of morning, rough and snowing; blowing a gale from the Eastward; late morning finer
but still cloudy; even at times, the sun has been shining, but for the greater part of the evening, it
has been cloudy; wind South West. Mean temp 34.75°. Samuel started off for Baie Verte with
our mail this morning. Ernest has been up to the Parsonage twice today at the fireworks making.
It is blowing a good breeze now (7 pm). Mean temp altogether 30°. Therm at 9 pm 27°.


Feb 17th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer 26°
Weather today being changeable, sometimes fine, at other times there were snowstorms.
Although this is Ash Wednesday there has been people here from Wild Cove and Purbeck’s
Cove. Prayers twice today; I attended each time. Day temp 26°. Mean temp altogether 23.5°.
Stephen and Joseph Jacobs started off with the Jackson’s Arm mail this morning.


Feb 18th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 28°
A fine day on the whole, although very cloudy at times. Day temp 23.75°. People here today
from Browns Cove, The Bottom Of The Bay and Sops Island. Ernest and John were up to the
Parsonage at their usual tasks this afternoon. I have been keeping a diary just two years today.
Wind today South West. As Mr. Wood is going to fire a sky rocket tonight, Ernie is gone up
there again tonight. Mean temp altogether 22°. Wind North North East.


Feb 19th, 1904 Friday Thermometer 28°
On the whole, a fine sunny day; the sky was a little cloudy especially in the evening. Stephen
and Joseph Jacobs arrived back from Jackson’s Arm this morning. Mean temp 23.75°. The
Hewitts here today from Clay Cove. Wind today South West. Wind tonight North West. Therm
at 6 pm 18°. R. Lacey down here this evening waiting for the mail which is not come yet. Mean
temp altogether 19.5°. Therm 9 pm 16°. Hurley, the mailman has not arrived yet.


Feb 20th, 1904 Saturday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 18°
Sometimes fine and sunny; at other times very cloudy. Wind North West. people here today
from The Bottom Of The Bay, Pumbly Cove, Hauling Point and Purbeck’s Cove. Day temp
13.75°. Samuel Hurley arrived from Baie Verte with mail this evening. The Japs are beating the
Russians on the sea at any rate. Therm at 6 pm 4°. Mean temp 6.5° Therm at 9 pm –5° below
zero. Mean temp for this week 18.86°, a great rise on last week’s temperature.


Feb 21st, 1904 Sunday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 3°

Feb 22nd, 1904 Monday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 16°
Yesterday, Sunday 21st was a fine day although very windy and cold. Day temp -1° below zero.
No church during the whole day yesterday. Therm at 9 pm -10° below zero. Mr. Wood’s
thermometer registered –25° below zero. Yesterday morning being the lowest this winter.
Therm at 9 pm 5° above zero. Mean temp yesterday – 2° below zero. This morning has been
dirty and snowy. Therm at 9 am 10°. People here this morning from Wild Cove. I have been
busy at postal work this morning and will be again tonight when I will close the mail. Ernie is
gone up to the Parsonage about the fireworks this evening. Weather in the evening same as this
morning. Wind today Eastern. Day temp 12.50°. Mean temp 12°. Snowing very fast tonight,
there will be a big batch down by morning.

Feb 23rd, 1904 Tuesday Thermometer 24°
Blowing a strong gale of wind from the West, although last night was very mild with rain which
caused a crust to form on the snow that fell yesterday; it has been drifting about with today’s
wind thereby making it very rough. Therm at 8 am 30°. Day temp 23.5°. Samuel Hurley started
for Baie Verte with our mail at 8 am. Mean temp 22.5°. Them at 9 pm 17°.

Feb 24th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer 25°
A fine sunny day; wind North West. Mean day temp 18.25°. The Wild Cove men have been
hauling wood for the Parson today. Edward Stuckless’ wife died at Purbeck’s Cove yesterday at
about 7.30 pm. People here today from Hauling Pont, Wild Cove and the Ricketts from Big
Island; also Thomas Stuckless from Purbeck’s Cove. Mean temp altogether 11°. I attended

A cloudy day from beginning to end; it is snowing fast now 6 pm. My right eye has become sore
again and I am forced to wear a shade over it today. The therm registered 31° at noon today; at 6
pm it stood at 13°. Day temp 21.25°. The sealers report a good many seals about today. Mean
temp altogether 13°.

A fine sunny day, but very frosty; wind North, day temp 4°. Therm at nine am zero; at 6 pm –1°
below zero. The Western Cove seal hunters got a few seals today, My eye is a little better
today. Now 6 pm there is no sign of the mailman. Mean temp –2° below zero. Therm at 9 pm
–4°. Samuel Hurley has not arrived yet. Mean temp for this week 9.93°, 8.93° below that of last
week. Before sunrise this morning, the therm registered –9°.

Yesterday, Sunday 28th was not a bad sort of a day but cloudy and in the evening it was blowing
a gale from the South West which caused the snow to drift about. Day temp 13.75°. Mean temp
altogether 11°. Samuel Hurley arrived with the mail about 7.30 pm. Mr. Wood presented me
with a Max and Min thermometer which he received by mail. Not much news of the war this
mail. Sam bought a large mail for Jackson’s Arm and French Shore which Stephen Jacobs will
carry across Tuesday morning. Edward Stuckless’ wife was buried yesterday; Richard Saunder’s
young son Eli died last night. This, the leap year day of 1904 has been a fine, sunny day. The
Bay seems to be free of ice as far as this Cove at any rate. People here today from Wild Cove.
Ernest has been laid up with the cold yesterday and today. Mean temp altogether 21°; Day temp
28.75°. Mean temp for this month 11.34° (3.38° below that of January) Therm during February,

A fine, sunny day, max temp 26°. Wind today, South West. Mr. Wood was down here this
morning, and both him and Mrs. Wood were here this evening. I am busy tonight getting the
Southern mail ready to start tomorrow morning. Day temp13.75°. Mean temp obtained by
taking the mean of 9 am and 9 pm 1°. Min temp -7°. Mean temp by that way 9.5°. This is a
very cold night. The therm is down to – 2° below zero already.

On the whole, a fine day, but rather cloudy at times as the wind is South South West blowing
very hard. Young Eli Saunders who died on Saturday aged 4 years old was buried today at
Hauling Point. Samuel Hurley started with the Southern mail and Stephen Jacobs with the
Jackson’s Arm mail this morning. Father completed his 52nd year to day. I am laid up with the


cold today. Ernest is getting better. Day temp 22°, Therm 6 pm 25°. Min temp -9°, max
temp 29°; mean temp therefore for these 4 temperatures; vis 9am , 9 pm max and min 13.75°.

arrived back from Jackson’s Arm yet; we feel rather uneasy about them; wind today South
South West. I have been reading “It is Never Too Late To Mend” by Charles Read to John
Jacobs this afternoon. Max temp 42°, min temp 26°. Mean temp obtained by rule 33.75°.
Therm at 9 pm 34°. Our women begin mat hooking last night, a good sign of Spring; there is a

Wood in the even. Samuel Hurley arrived from Baie Verte with our mail this evening. 2 pm ,
Stephen and Joseph Jacobs have not arrived yet; much uneasiness felt in regard to their safety.

killed 4 seals today; the Western Cove men could not get n the ice. The Northern Slob is

on account of my leg. Father has been laid up this last three days with the piles. Snowing in the
night. Max temp 39°, min temp 17°; mean temp 27.25°. A fine sunny morning; this evening it
was rather cloudy. Wind for the greater part of the day North West; a light air. Day temp
32.25°. People here today from Jackson’s Arm and Sops Island. The seal hunters of Western
and Pound Coves killed one seal between seven of them today. Ernest and John Jacobs Jr. were
up to the Parsonage at the ‘fire work making’ this evening. Therm at 6 pm 21°. Max temp 44°,

has lately given out; so I am not much good for anything again now. The Western Cove men

This the last day of March has been on the whole a fine sunny day; all day, except the time
between 10 am and 1 pm when for a short time, it was cloudy and snowing a little. The sun has

from Jackson’s Arm. Day temp 30°. I have got poultice on my left thigh today as the lump on it

that was in the Cove has broken up and gone out ; the Bay is now free of ice as far as this place.
People here today from Cat Arm and Lower Wild Cove. Therm at 6 pm 34°; max temp 43°; min
temp 30°; mean temp 35.25°.


Apr 21st, 1904 Thursday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 46°
Snowing fast until 11 am, also blowing very hard from the North East; after 11 am, the wind
went down and it became a little finer; it has been cloudy and foggy all the evening, however:
day temp 40°, very foggy now 6.30 pm. Therm at 6 pm 36°. Thomas Poole shipped off some of
this seals this afternoon. The Wild Cove men left here 11 am. Max temp 49°; min temp 29°;
mean temp 36°.

A dirty snowy day; at least until 2 pm when the weather cleared a little; wind all day North East
blowing a gale. Now 6.30 pm it has stopped snowing. Quite a lot of snow has fallen during the
time it has continued. People here today from Wild Cove in spite of weather. Day temp 34°.
James Jacobs and George Hurley have been sawing wood for us this evening. All of us have got
a bad cold today. Max temp 40°; min temp 28°; mean temp 32.25°.

A fine, sunny day hardly a cloud in the sky for the whole day. Wind South West, a moderate
breeze. Day temp 41°. People here this evening from Purbeck’s Cove, The Beaches and Sops
Island; Father has been tending them until now 7.15 pm; therm at 6 pm 38°. The bay seems to
be free of ice now except a little dragging this side; the Cove however is full. There is no sign
of the mailman yet. Max temp today 46°; min temp 17°; mean max temp of this week 42.857°;
mean min temp 25.28°; mean temp of this week (mean of 9 am and 9 pm (each day) as usual)

Yesterday, Sunday 24th was a fine, warm, sunny day; the warmest day we have had yet this
season; the thermometer registered 91° in the sun, 56° in the shade. Samuel Hurley arrived with
the mail about 10.30 yesterday morning. Max temp 56°; min temp 32°; mean temp 42°.
This has been a dull, cloudy day; blowing a gale from the North East; also raining a little at
times. Therm at 3 pm 34°. People here today in droves from Hauling Point, Big Island,
Jackson’s Arm, Ken Ricketts here today from Sops Arm, Pumbly Cove, Wild Cove and Little
Arm; a great many of them brought seals so Father has been busy all day. Stewart expected
shortly. Jackson’s Arm mail not gone across. Max temp today 41°; min temp 25°; mean temp

from going to church on account of my thigh. Day temp 36.5°; max temp 43°; min temp 29°;
mean temp 33.5°. This morning, it was dull and cloudy with occasional snowstorms. It has

A fine, sunny day with a strong breeze of wind from the South West. Day temp 43.75°. People
here today from Jackson’s Arm. The Western Cove men recommenced work on the Gov. Wharf
this evening. The part of the Bay free of ice today; Cove still full. therm at 6 pm 44°. Max
temp 49°; min temp 30°; mean temp 40.50°.

May 5th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 31°
Began fine, warm and sunny; about 9 am the wind changed from South West to East; the sky
became cloudy and the rain began; 11 am the rain changed to snow; from 11 am to 3 pm about 3
inches of snow fell. At 9 am, the thermometer registered 52°; at noon the temperature was down
to 33°. Samuel Hurley left with the mail this morning. People here today from Big Island,
Little Arm and Hauling Point. A crowd of men were getting ballast for the Gov. Wharf this
morning. This Easterly wind has cleared the Cove of ice. Therm at 6 pm 31°. Since 3 pm, the
weather has been rather better; wind dropping. Day temp 40.25°. Nothing doing since dinner.

A fine, sunny day; wind however still North. The wind has changed to South West tonight. Day

Yesterday was on the whole a dull, calm, cloudy day with a very light air from the East. Parson
Wood being at Hauling Point, there were no prayers here yesterday. Samuel Hurley arrived from
Baie Verte with our mail yesterday. The mail steamer Prospero left St. John’s for the Northern
out ports, Western Cove being on the list. Day temp 42°. Max temp 45°; min temp 32°; mean
temp 37.50°. This has been a fine, sunny day until 5 pm when then fog came in; it is very foggy
tonight; wind East. Day temp 41°. Therm at 6 pm 38°. The men began to ballast the new clock
of the Gov. Wharf this evening; there are crowds of men here from Hauling Point and other
places bringing ballast in their punts. People here today from Hauling Point, Jackson’s Arm and
Sops Island. Mr. Wood arrived back from Hauling Point this morning. Max temp 48°; min

A fine, sunny day; no clouds; wind North East. Day temp 39.5°. Therm at 6 pm 38°. Stephen
and Joseph Jacobs started this morning with the Jackson’s Arm mail; they arrived home again
about 2 pm; quite a large mail from Jackson’s Arm this time. A big crew finished ballasting the
Wharf this morning. Mr. Wood called on Mother this evening. The weather seems cold for this
time of the year. No sign of the mail steamer yet. Father has been busy this evening serving the
men working on the Wharf. Max temp 45°; min temp 30°; mean temp 35.75°.

A fine, warm, sunny day with a little wind this evening from the East; morning, calm and very
warm. Therm registered 101° in the sun at 3 pm. The Western Cove men are working on the
Gov. Wharf today. This has been the warmest day this Spring yet. Thomas and Edward
Stuckless brought the planks for the wharf today. People here today from Browns and Pumbly

May 12th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 67°
This has been a fine, warm, sunny day; temperature higher than yesterday; wind South west in
the morning, East in the evening. Therm registered 67° at 1.30 pm being the highest temperature
for the day; day temp 59°. Therm at 6 pm 56°. One Hauling Point and one Pumbly Cove man
here today. This being Ascension Day, there have been prayers morning and evening. Men still
at work on Gov. Wharf today.

May 13th, 1904 Friday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 65°
On the whole, a fine, sunny day although rather cloudy at times; wind this morning and early
afternoon West South West; calm since 5 pm. Therm at 6 pm 56°. People here today from Big
Island and Purbeck’s Cove. The men finished building the New Block on the Gov. Wharf this
morning; they were getting more ballast for it this evening.
Raining for a short time tonight, but it is finer again now 9 pm. Max temp 66°; min temp 36°;

A fine, sunny day since 9 am; wind all day East or North East; Therm at 6 pm 41°. Day temp
47.5°. The Osmonds who were down here from The Bottom Of The Bay working for Breen
went home this evening. Nobody here from outside, except some Jackson’s Arm men. Darius
Jacobs cut his hand while at work on the Wharf today. Max temp 55°; min temp 35°; mean temp

On the whole, a dull, cloudy, foggy day until about 4 pm when the weather cleared and the sun
shone out; this is a clear, fine night. Therm registered 45° at 9 pm. Day temp 51.75°; therm at 6
pm 51°. Charles Rolf who was over here from Little Arm mending Breen’s sieve, went home
this morning. This has been a moderate day with light airs from the South East. People here
today from Hauling Point and Purbeck’s Cove. John Small left this morning. Last work on the
Wharf finished today. Out in punt today. Max temp 56°; min temp 44°; mean temp 49°.


May 18th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 43°
A dull, cloudy day with a heavy breeze from the North North East which lowered the
temperature a great deal. Darius and Robert Jacobs began to skin Father’s seals this morning;
Father is putting his ‘fat’ in puncheons this year; he’s got about 250 seals to skin this yea. I have
not been very well today. Therm at 6 pm 39°. Luke Gill of Pumbly Cove is down here working
about the seals. No chance of getting a mail very soon, at present. It is rather chilly tonight; the
therm registering 35° at 9 pm. Max temp 45°; min temp 35°; mean temp 39°.


May 19th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 57°
On the whole, a fine, sunny day with but few clouds until now 7.30 pm; wind this morn
South West; this evening it has been from the Eastward. Day temp 49.5°. People here today
from Purbeck’s Cove, Pumbly Cove, Big Island and Jackson’s Arm. Darius and Robert finished
skinning the seals this evening. Some of the Western Cove men, this last two or three days have
been employed by Breen about a shed he is having built to put herring barrels in. Last night was
rather cold. Therm 27°. Max temp 58°; min temp 27°; mean temp 41.25°.

A dirty, cloudy, foggy day; raining very often during the day; wind East North East. Day temp
47.25°. Darius Jacobs went to Seal Cove this morning and arrived home again this evening.
Joseph Osmond here from Seal Cove today. One fish caught at Seal Cove during this week; this
fish is in at Coachmans Cove according to Joseph Osmond’s account. Lacey down here this
evening. Thomas Poole finished up at the seals fat this morning. Max temp 51°; min temp 38°;

Morning very dirty with rain first and then snow. The temperature ranged from 41° at 9 am to
34 between 10 and 11 am; the weather cleared a little this evening and the snow melted away.
Now, 7.30 pm, it is dirty again with snow; wind North east blowing hard; therm now 36°; day

Today the wind has been from the South South West; weather cloudy with frequent rain squalls;
it is very moderate this evening. People here today from The Bottom; Sops Island, Back Cove
and Little Arm. Some people say that there is not a great deal of ice. Samuel Hurley started off

A fine day but very cloudy this afternoon; it is raining now, 6.45 pm; wind today South West;

Cove and Jackson’s Arm. Robert and Luke Jacobs have been extending the landing place on the
Gov Wharf today. This being Victoria Day, we have had flags flying until 6 pm. Max temp 69°;

May 25th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at 1.30 pm 48°
Morning cloudy and windy; wind today North North West blowing a gale all the evening; now 7
pm, the wind is going down; this has been a fine evening. Therm 45°. Day temp 44.5°. Therm
since 3 pm 45°. Soon after 9 am, the Prospero, the northern mail steamer arrived from the South;
and as they did not expect to call here on return trip on account of ice; Father put his seal skins
on board and left in her for St. John’s; they are going North if possible as far as Griquet. The
Prospero had not left when Samuel Hurley arrived from Baie Verte with part of her mail which
they gave him not expecting to reach this on account of ice of which there is quite a lot. John
Lilley, Mr. Wood’s man came by the Prospero; Samuel Hurley is also with the Parson this
summer. Albert Rice, G.P. arrived by steamer. Max temp 52°; min temp 40°; mean temp 44°.

have been working on his yacht. Breen took between 16 and 20 barrels of herring at the factory

come up the other side of the Bay is dragging down this side this evening with the west wind;

Arm and Big Island. E.W. Roberts’s men arrived here today from Bay Of Islands; they are gone

Father’s net this morning. Some of the fishermen caught one half quintal of fish today. Therm

right ankle has given out again and I am hardly able to get about today. Max temp 69°; min

at 3 pm; Father and Breen had freight come by the steamer. One of my old school chums named
John Pond was on the steamer going to Griquet; he came ashore for a few minutes. People here
today from Browns Cove, Sops Island, Hauling Point, Little Arm, Seal Cove and Upper Wild
Cove. Therm at 6 pm 64°. Not much fish caught about here today; but the Hauling Point men

A dull, cloudy morning with rain, thunder and lightning about 10.30 am; this evening, between


2.30 and 5 pm, the sky cleared and the sun appeared, but since 5 pm it has been cloudy again,
very moderate; a light air from the East at times during the day. Day temp 51.75°. John Ricketts
of Middle Arm and John Small of Lower Wild Cove were here after salt today; they are doing
well with the fish down about Lobster Harbour. The Gavins of Back Cove were also here for

side and the North side of White Bay. Lot Head found and stopped the leak in the Lulu this

A fine, sunny day on the whole although rather cloudy at times, also blowing a gale of wind from
the West. Day temp 62.25°. Thos. and Eli Pitman from Sops Island here today after salt. A
good sign of fish going today but on account of the wind, the fishermen could not stay out.

fish today; they trapped 10 barrels this morning and about 20 this evening. Samuel Jacobs is
very low today with a very bad cold or chill. Father has been putting goods in the Lulu today as
they will start Monday morning for the other side of the Bay. Max temp 70°; min temp 43°;

Yesterday, Sunday 25th was a fine, sunny day; very warm until 12 noon (Therm 73°) when the
wind sprung up from the East after which the weather became colder. Day temp 57.75°. Therm
at 9 pm 43°. Max temp 74°; min temp 36°; mean temp 51.5°. This has been a fine day but rather
cloudy about 1.30 pm, there were some heavy rainstorms; since 3 pm however, the weather has
been fine. John Fradsham of Southern Arm here today after salt; also people here today from
Big Island (the Ricketts for salt) and Hauling Point. Mr. Breen lent me some books this evening.
Samuel Jacobs is very bad again this evening; I do not think he is long for this world. Day temp

one of them is Norris’s trader looking for salt; the other is War’s fisherman here from green Bay
on her way to Labrador; they came here to land War’s wife to John Jacobs. John being her
Father, she is here for a time I believe. Day temp 50°. Max temp 66°; min temp 47°; mean temp

A fine, sunny day but blowing quite as hard, at times, as it was yesterday; wind today West

On the whole, a fine, warm day, but a times, cloudy with a few rainstorms this evening; weather
very warm; therm at 1.30 pm not recorded; at 3 pm however the temp was 71°. Mrs. Wood’s
Mother, Mrs. Winter died about 11 pm last night aged 61. The SS Prospero arrived from St.
John’s this morning about 10 am. Mr. Wood arrived by the Prospero; he is very ill and Mr.
Richards, who was here in 1902, came with him to visit the French Shore for him (Mr. Wood).
Father having freight by the Prospero, we were therefore kept busy all day. Max temp 73°; min

This has been a fine sunny day, except during a short time between 10 and 11.30 am when there

from Wild Cove and Pumbly Cove; also Mr. Thomas Roberts and Luke Gill from Robert’s

Williams Rice’s house in Pound Cove yesterday; Bert gave me some old NFLD year books. Day
temp yesterday 65.5°. Breen was here to tea yesterday evening. Therm at 6 pm 67°. Max temp
74°; min temp 44°; mean temp 59°. This has been a fine, warm day, but like yesterday, very
cloudy and smoky at times through out the day; weather however very warm. This morning, we
took the fish and salmon out of the Lulu; about 1 pm Father, Ernie, Lot Head and Bert Rice

A foggy day on the whole, but at times quite fine and sunny; wind, the little there was and is

Jacobs and crew got ½ barrel of fish out of the trap this evening being the first haul since

This has been a splendid day; fine with a fresh breeze of wind from the South west; day temp
64.75°. The Lulu arrived home from the Bay this morning; they brought home 23 tierce of
salmon this trip. Mr. Woods yacht, “The Harbinger” arrived home from the North shore with
Mr. Richards on board this evening. Fish scarce today. Therm at 6 pm 61°. Max temp 71°; min

A fine, warm, sunny day; wind South West. We have been very busy today; people here from
Pumbly Cove, Purbeck’s Cove and also Lacey and son who are here waiting for the Prospero but
she has not arrived yet; 8 pm therm 69° now. Day temp 70°. We have taken a lot of fish and
salmon today. This has been a very warm day; the temp at 6 pm being 70°. Max temp 76°; min

Yesterday, Sunday 17th was a fine, warm, sunny day, but sometimes the sky was overcast;
yesterday was a very warm day. Day temp 69.25°. The steamer Prospero arrived with the mail
at 12.05 am Sunday morning and as gather had freight come by her, we were very busy getting it
out between 12 and 3 am; I went to bed however at 2.30 am. Parsons Wood and Richards held
prayers yesterday; Parson Richards preaching in the morning and afternoon, and Parson Wood
after tea. Max temp 77°; min temp 57°; mean temp 66.5°. Until about 2 pm this was a very
warm day; after 2 pm, however, the wind came from the eastward which cooled the air; the
temperature falling from 74° at noon to 62° at 3 pm and finally to 50° at 8.30 pm. We have been
busy today; there being people here from Big Island with fish; also Robert Jacobs and crew
shipped off their salmon. Day temp 64.75°. The steamer is expected back from the North about

This has been the warmest day to date; the sun has been shinning all day sending the therm up to
112° in the sun. A fresh breeze of wind all day from the South West. Father, Ernie and Lot
Head started fro Hauling Point in the Lulu this morning. Luke Gill, the oldest man in White Bay
died at The Bottom Of The Bay yesterday, aged 88 years. Bert Rice did not go in the Lulu this
trip as he has got a sore thumb. The therm registered 72° at 7.30 pm. Max temp 81°; min temp

The weather today has been changeable; early this morning it was very cloudy, but about 10 am,
the sky cleared and the sun shone out of a clear sky; also, there being no wind until 12.30 pm it
became very warm, the therm registering 80° at the highest; after 12, the wind came from the
East and the air cooked down a little. Day temp 68.5°. Mr. Wood’s yacht, the Harbinger arrived
home from seal Cove with Mr. Richards, John Lilley and Sam Hurley on board this morning. A
trader called here after John Jacobs’ fish today. The South East wind has brought the smoke out

A fine, sunny day but as usual accompanied by a rather cloudy sky at times. The therm

72.75°. The Lulu arrived home from The Bottom Of The Bay this evening. John Jacobs’ trader
left here this evening. Mother and Father are gone up to see Mr. Wood now 7.30 pm. The

This has been a very warm day; the heat today has not been exceeded this last 20 years Mr.
Wood says. This morning the wind was South West but it was calm this evening until 5 pm
when the wind came from the East; calm again since 7 pm however. Day temp 79.25°. The
hottest time was the 3 pm temp of 87°; therm at 6 pm 75°. In spite of the heat, we were busy
taking the fish out of the Lulu today. Mr. Richards was here to the house this evening and

A stormy day on the whole; the first wind coming accompanied by rain about 10.30 am; the wind
was South West until this evening it came from the North West. There has been several heavy

arrived about 10.30 this morning; they brought freight for Father; Mr. Richards left in the
steamer for his mission of Flours Cove. I see by the newspapers that there have been several
battles between the Japs and Russians lately. very hot weather in St. John’s, the therm

The day began dull, cloudy, foggy and wet, but about 11 am the weather cleared since when the

temp 66.5°; 1.30 pm therm 69°. The steamer Prospero arrived at Pound Cove this morning at 5
o’clock; they took onboard 200 barrels of herring for Breen and left about 10.00 am. Mrs. War
returned home from Twillingate, taking her sister Agnes Jacobs with her as a servant by the
Prospero; Lacey also left for St. John’s by her (the Prospero). Very moderate tonight. The therm

A fine, sunny day. Wind today North West. Day temp 57°. I have been painting the veranda
today. The Lulu, with Father, Ernie, Bert Rice and Lot Head on board, left for Southern Arm
this morning. I took my thermometer up to the Parsonage tonight to compare with Parson
Wood’s minimum thermometer. Not much doing today. Therm at 9 pm 51°; max temp 63°; min
temp 48°; mean temp 53.75°.


Sep 7th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at noon 60°
A fine, sunny day with a fresh breeze from the West all day. Day temp 57.75°. 6pm therm 57°.
Parson Wood and his men went in the country deer hunting this morning. Breen’s Western Cove
crew arrived home from Jackson’s Arm where they were herring hunting, this evening empty
handed. Breen did not go with them Monday evening as I supposed he did. Ken Ricketts, who
is about to remove from Sops Arm to Bear Path, Western Cove, brought over some of his things
this evening; he is going to take Robert’s traps skiff to bring his family, and the remainder of this
stuff over in. I have been painting the Trout Bridge today. The wind is South West tonight.

Yesterday, Sunday was a fine, sunny day but blowing very heavy from the South West; also very
smoky from the forest fires. Day temp 60.25°; yesterday was a very lonely day as we saw
nobody until the evening. Mrs. Samuel Jacobs came to see Mother. The therm registered 57° at
9 pm last night. Max temp 66°; min temp 50°; mean temp 57.75°.Today has been, on the whole,
dull and smoky, but the weather is still very warm with the wind from the South West. Day
temp 62.25°. Therm at 7 pm 65°, 9 pm 62°. Parson Wood arrived home from The Bottom Of
The Bay this morning. R.S. Lacey from Purbeck’s Cove and William Gill from Pumbly Cove

appearance at Western Cove tonight; they are going to take in barrels and salt for Sops Island.

This has been a fine, sunny day; wind this morning South West; calm this evening and tonight.
The weather was very cold this morning, the therm registered 47° at 9 am. The SS Prospero
arrived from St. John’s about 7 pm; she broke down on her way this trip. William Jacobs came
here by the Prospero to spend a few days here while the steamer is gone North; he has got work
at Tilt Cove. Father and Breen had freight by Prospero. Therm at 9 pm 43°. Max temp 61°; min
temp 39°; mean temp 47.5°.

This has been a stormy day blowing very hard from the South South West at least this evening
and tonight; very warm tonight; the therm registering 67°. The English Man Of War has been
practicing in the Bay today. One of the biggest battles of history is now in progress between
Japan and Russia; on the whole the Japs seem to be getting the best of the fight. 9 pm temp 66°.

Today has been a fine day on the whole but blowing heavy from the North West. Day temp

yesterday. Breen and his crew arrived home in their skiff this evening. William Jacobs was to

Yesterday, Sunday 18th, began fine and sunny, but late in the afternoon the sky became cloudy
and it was raining all night. Prevailing wind West. Early yesterday morning, the SS Prospero
arrived from the North; in the evening the new mail ship Portia arrived with a mail from St.
John’s. Max temp 61°; min temp 50°; mean temp 54.5°. Dull and cloudy this morning; wind
North West. The Lulu with Father, Bert Rice and Lot Head on board left this morning for
Hauling Point to land Gavin’s flour and other stuff. William Jacobs left by the Prospero to take
up his work at Tilt Cove. Another War Ship has been practicing in the Bay this morning; the big
guns sounding like thunder. Evening, same as morning, cloudy; wind still northern. Day temp
54.5°. Father came home from Hauling Point by way of Wild Cove Bight this evening; Lot and

A dull, cloudy day on the whole although fine and sunny at times during the day. About 3 pm
the steamer Portia arrived from the North; after taking in the mail, she went to Pound Cove and
took in Breen’s herring. Father and Mother went to Pound Cove by punt to visit the Portia.
Father paid Lot Head off evening, so he is not clear of us. Parson Wood arrived home from seal
Cove this evening. Max temp 55°; min temp 39°; mean temp 46.5°.


Sept 21st, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at noon 50°
Dirty with heavy rain and South South West wind until this afternoon the weather cleared and
the wind came from the North North West; rather chilly this evening; the therm registering 43° at
6.30 pm. Day temp 49°. Mr. Breen’s crew brought the Ripple over from Sops Island today;
Browne tells me she is not hurt very much. The Big Island people left for home this evening.

politics, the Newfoundland ‘General Elections’ will take place on October 31st, 1904. The therm

On the whole, a fine day although at times cloudy and once this morning there was a rain storm.

Arm, Pumbly Cove and Lacey and son from Purbeck’s Cove; also Alex Huett from Clay Cove.
The ballot steamer “Walrus” arrived here this morning with District Magistrate Duder on board
to appoint a deputy Returning Officer at this place; Breen accepted the position of honour as
Father who held it last Election 1900 will be in St. John’s at the date of the present elections. I
went up to the Parsonage this evening to return some books and papers that Parson Wood had
lent us; Mother and Father are gone up to see Mr. Wood this evening, 6.30 pm. Day temp 49°;
Breen and crew left here for Sops Island this evening after dinner. The steamer Portia arrived
from the north about 11.30 last night; Breen having the Ripple up here with his herring on board
they soon had them aboard of the steamer; and about 1.00 am this morning she left for St. john’s.

tea. Therm at 6 pm 39°. I spent my afternoon yesterday walking the road with Albert Rice and

Yesterday, Sunday 16th was on the whole a fine day although rather cloudy at times. Wind East.

the mail, among the passengers was old John Jacobs who returned home from Baie Verte after an
absence of 1 ½ months. Parson Wood held prayers three times yesterday but I did not attend
being too busy reading the papers. Therm at 6 pm 35°. Max temp 44°; min temp 29°; mean
temp 36.50°. This has been a fine, sunny day until 4 pm when the sky became overcast with

This has been a dull, cloudy day; wind about East North East. Day temp 38.5°. People here
today from Hauling Point. The steamer Portia arrived from North about 5.45 pm; they took
aboard Father’s freight before 9 pm and left for St. John’s. The following passengers going by
her from this place and Pound Cove vis : Father, Mother, Albert rice and Luke Jacobs bound to
St. John’s. While they were putting the freight on board of the steamer, Robert Jacobs,
happening to pass by the Hole at a time freight was being hoisted, got knocked into it having a

Cove was married by Parson Wood at Western Cove Church tonight; Thomas Stuckless of
Purbeck’s Cove here this morning. Mr. Clapp, the Liberal Candidate for the district of St. Barbe
arrived here tonight by the steamer ‘Greyhound’. From what I can gather, Robert Jacobs is a

Yesterday, Sunday 23rd was a dirty, rainy day; the wind being from the South; yesterday it

prayers held here; in consequence it was very dull. I spent my time reading and sleeping; I
missed Mother very much yesterday, in fact, I do every day. We saw no person all day

This has been a cloudy day also moderate; there is a good breeze of wind tonight, however from
the North West. Day temp 49.75°. Simon Rice of Hauling Point and Rebecca Osborne of Seal
Cove were married by Parson Wood at Western Cove Church this evening. After the ceremony,
the bridal party returned to hauling Point from when they came. Ernest and young Jack Jacobs

October 31st, 1904. The three candidates for this District of St. Barbe being Bradshaw, Clapp

Yesterday, Sunday 30th was on the whole a dull, cloudy day with a good breeze of wind from the
South South West. Day temp 40°. The steamer Portia arrived here yesterday afternoon with the
mail; I had a letter from both Father and Mother by mail; Mother did not enjoy her trip going to
St. John’s as she was very sea sick. Luke Jacobs arrived home from hi strip to St. John’s by this
steamer. I wrote three letters last night, one each to Father and Mother and one to the General Post Office
concerning a letter I sent by the last mail which contained $4.40 of which they have
acknowledged but $2.00; they say that they received no letter with the money which was simply
wrapped in a piece of paper which piece of paper contained but $2.00 in silver; I contend the
letter which was registered must have been tampered with. This has been on the whole a dirty
day; at least in the morning as it was snowing until this evening but it has been cloudy ever since.

Snowing all this morning, but this evening it is fine; the wind this morning was from the North

parson Wood heldservice twice but I did not attend as it was too wet. Day temp 38.25°; the therm registered 42° at

Morning, dull and cloudy; wind South West. Breen’s crew got the Ripple in by the Wharf this
morning and took their herring out, after-which they took in barrels of salt for Sops Island. Shem
Combden is coopering Breen’s herring in one of sheds today. Evening much the same as the
morning, until tonight, it cleared away a fine, moon light night. Parson Wood set off some of
the fire works that Ernest and the others made last winter; they did not go off very well however.

been busy at one thing and another. The steamer was here about three hours taking out Father’s
goods. Tonight, Mr. wood held a magic lantern show in the schoolroom, afterwards, the young

This morning, it was fine and sunny; this evening however, the weather has been dull and

This has been on the whole a dull, cloudy day, also snowing for a time during the day; wind
today East South East. Calm and cold tonight. Old Lacey got tired of waiting for the steamer
and went home this evening; the Hauling Point men who came yesterday are still here waiting
however. Max temp 29°; min temp 21°; mean temp 25°.


Dec 7th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at noon 25°
Fine and sunny for a short time during the morning, but cloudy ever since. Prevailing wind
today South West; very moderate this evening, however, wind North West in the early morning.
There is now a slight covering of snow of the ground. People here today from Pumbly Cove and
Jackson’s Arm; the Hauling Point men who were up here waiting for the steamer went home this
evening. Father, Mother and Ernie are gone to church tonight. Therm at 9 am 21°. Nat Ricketts
and Joseph Jacobs were sawing wood for us today. The mail steamer is making another long trip

Dec 8th, 1904 Thursday Thermometer at noon 33°
Very thick and snowy all the morning but this evening there being no snow; wind today about
South East. People here today from Hauling Point. Samuel Rice, who has been at Seal Cove
lately, brings word that the steamer did not leave St. John’s until Thursday, 1st instant and that
she was expected at Baie Verte last night. I have been busy this evening issuing money order.

Morning cloudy, wind West South West. Evening fine and sunny but cold and frosty, the wind
being from the North West. The SS Prospero arrived with the mail at 11.30 am. Among the
passengers was Robert Osmond, brother of James Osmond of The Bottom Of The Bay. Parson
Wood went to Jackson’s Arm by the Prospero; he will also go to Seal Cove by her. Old Lacey
had his winter provisions come by the steamer. Day temp 27.50°; the therm registered 24° at 6

On the whole, a fine, sunny day but on occasions very cloudy; blowing very heavy from the
Westward. I spent this cold windy day in reading the newspapers and attending people coming
to the Post Office. Old Lacey could not get up with his stuff today, as it was too windy. Nobody
came here from outside today. Day temp 24.50°; the therm registered 22° at 9 am. Max temp

Yesterday, Sunday 11th was a dull cloudy day but no falling weather until about 6.30 pm
it came on to snow. Parson Wood being at Jackson’s Arm, there were no prayers here yesterday.
Crowds of Hauling Point people here yesterday posting and registering letters. Day temp 25.50°.
Snowing nearly all night (last), a foot of snow on the ground.
Wind today North West, weather fine and frosty; sky cloudy and overcast; the snow drifts a little.
The steamer Prospero arrived from Jackson’s Arm where she was last night; this morning about
9.30 am, they took in Breen’s herring and left again about noon. Parson Wood came from
Jackson’s Arm by the steamer but left again by her for Seal Cove. Mr. Edward W. Breen left
here by the SS Prospero for his home in St. John’s after a sojourn in White Bay this year of 7 ½
months having come with Samuel Hurley from Baie Verte April 29th , 1904. The therm
registered 27° at 3 pm this evening. Day temp 27°. The therm registered 29° at 9 pm. Max

A cloudy day but no falling weather. Wind North West this morning, calm the greater part of the
day; wind North East since 3 pm. John Ricketts and Joe Gilliam here from Big Island this
morning. Father and Robert Jacobs were down to the factory in Pound Cove after some
provisions Father bought of Breen. Day temp 29°; the therm registered 26° at 6 pm. Max temp
32°; min temp 25°; mean temp 28°.

Dec 14th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at noon 29°
A cloudy day on the whole although the sun shone out a little this afternoon; wind today from
the North East. Day temp 25.50°. Robert, Luke, Stephen and Joseph Jacobs, Ken Ricketts and
Samuel Hurley have been hauling ballast for the Government Wharf today. People here today
from Browns Cove. Ernest began school again yesterday after an absence of two months.
Although the sky is cloudy, it is very frosty; the therm registering 13° of frost at 6 pm. At 9 pm,
the therm registered 17°. Max temp 31°; min temp 15°; mean temp 23°.

Hauling Point and Little Arm. As I have been far from well today, I have not been outdoors
except to read the thermometer. The men of Western Cove still hauling ballast today. Max temp

On the whole, a fine day but cloudy and overcast occasionally; very moderate, prevailing wind
North East. Day temp 25.25°. People here today from Pumbly Cove. I am better today, but I
have not been outdoors much. Parson Wood arrived home from Seal Cove this morning with
Darius Jacobs who had been at lower Wild Cove to inspect the Bridge that has been lately built
there. The therm registered 29° at noon and at 4.39 pm 19°, at 6 pm the temp was 21°. The
therm registered 19° at 9 pm. Max temp 31°; min temp 14°; mean temp 22.25°. Temperatures

Yesterday morning was fine and sunny, calm; in the evening, the sky was cloudy and overcast;
light winds from the South East. Parson Wood held prayers in the morning and at night. I
attended in the morning. Day temp 22.75°; the therm registered 15° at 9 am. I went up to the
parsonage to call on Parson Wood yesterday afternoon. Max temp 29°; min temp 10°; mean
temp 18.75°.
Early this morning it was very moderate with but a little wind from the North East. Calm, this
afternoon until 4 pm when the wind came from the South; it is blowing a smart breeze now 7 pm
from the South South West. Day temp 25°. Therm at 6 pm 20°. Father and Mother called on
Parson and Mrs. Wood tonight. Max temp 30°; min temp 18°; mean temp 23.25°.

A dull, dirty day, snowing fast since 9.30 am this morning. Wind from South to East South East.
Day temp 28.25°. Not much doing today, there being nobody here from outside. I spent the
greater part of my time reading as usual today. About 8 inches of light snow fell during the day.

A dull, cloudy day with snow at times throughout the day; wind from South this morning to
South West this evening. Nobody here from outside today, except some Jackson’s Arm men
who called in here on their way to Seal Cove. Ernest is not very well so he did not go to school
today. Parson Wood is not well enough to hold prayers tonight, St. Thomas Day. Day temp

A fine, sunny day but very cold and frosty with a strong breeze of wind from the North North

temperatures as here-to-fore. This is a very cold, frosty night. The therm registering 6° at 9 pm.

this has been a very cold, frosty day, but fine on the whole. Wind still North North West
blowing strong all day but hardly any wind tonight. Day temp 5.25°. There were 25° of frost at
noon today; therm at 6 pm 3° above zero. The temp was down to 1° above zero this morning
early. Now 9 pm, the Cove is almost full of slob ice; the temp being 2°. Nobody here from
outside except George Rice who walked up here from Wild Cove to post a letter. Max temp 11°;

Dec 24th, 1904 Saturday Thermometer at noon 3°
This Christmas Eve has been one of the coldest days of the year, blowing hard all day from the
North West. This Cove is now bridged over with ice. Day temp 1.75°. The therm was 1° below
zero this morning at 9 am. There seems to be no chance of the Prospero getting here this time as
this side of the Bay is full of slob ice. Therm at 9 pm 0°. Max temp 11°; min temp – 3°; mean
temp -.5°. Samuel Hurley and John Jacobs (cripple) has been sawing wood for us today.
Temperatures of this week: Therm – highest 32° on the 20th and 21st; lowest –3° on the 24th;

Yesterday, Sunday 25th, Christmas Day was a cold, windy day, blowing very hard from the West
North West. Day temp 8.75°. Parson Wood being ill yesterday, there were no prayers during the
day. A dull Christmas tide.
Fine and sunny at times today, but on the whole, cloudy. Wind today North North West. Day
temp 11°. People here today from Hauling Point. This has been the dullest Christmas tide we
have spent in White Bay; no prayers, no sport, nothing! Young Lacey was down here from
Purbeck’s Cove posting letters this evening. Samuel Hurley launched his skiff across the Cove
on the ice this morning. A bad cold going about Western Cove. Max temp 16°; min temp 3°;

A fine, sunny day on the whole, but blowing hard from the North North West. Day temp
14.75°. John Stuckless and James Hewitt walked here from Purbeck’s Cove and back again this
afternoon. I have got the ‘cold’ that is going. Max temp 18°; min temp 9°; mean temp 15°.


Dec 28th, 1904 Wednesday Thermometer at noon 18°
A dull, cloudy day with very little wind; what there is being from the South. the SS Prospero
arrived here this morning at 11.30 am. She came in the Cove through the ice on which they
landed the freight; they had freight for Father and Albert Rice who is down here for E.W.
Roberts who is going to build a mill somewhere in the Bay. The steamer will not call in here on
her way back from the North. Consequently, they took the return mail with them. Day temp
15.25°. So Albert Rice is down this way again. I thought he would be ! Max temp 19°; min
temp 4°; mean temp 13°.

On the whole, a fine day, but there has been several snow showers. Wind today South West.

This has been a cloudy day on the whole although sunny at times, then again there has been
snow showers. Wind West South West. Day temp 18.75°. My cold is a little better today,
thanks to Chase’s pills. Nobody here from outside today. Max temp 24°; min temp 15°; mean
temp 17.5°.

This, the last day of 1904 has been a fine sunny day with a strong breeze or wind from the North
West. Day temp 16.50°. I am still ‘laid by the heels’ with the cold. Mother has also it bad.
People here today from Hauling Point and the Ricketts from Big Island. I intend to send Samuel
Hurley to Baie Verte with a mail Tuesday, Jan 3rd, 1905. The temp at 4.30 pm 15°; at 6 pm
however, it was up to 17°; it is rather moderate tonight. This year ends with the Cove bridge
with ice; there is about 10 inches of snow on the ground. Robert Jacobs and crew who have
been hauling wood for us this last few days finished, and were paid off today. This has been a
cold year on the whole, but fine and sunny generally. Max temp 19°; min temp 10°; mean temp
