NL GenWebTrinity Bay Region ~ Trinity SouthGrates Cove - Old United Church Cemetery |
The Old United Church Cemetery in the Grates Cove is found overlooking the harbour and about half way up the hill towards the new cemeteries. It is generally overgrown by tall grass and shrubs. Several headstones are seen standing. The graveyard is in general disrepair. Several of the headstones are damaged, and many are lying on the ground.
The verses were very lengthy and detailed on these headstones. Much more than I had seen on the new headstones. It reminded me of the Old Anglican Cemetery in Placentia - some of the headstones in that cemetery had short stories describing an event or the life of the person. Many of the headstones in the Old United Church Cemetery at the Grates Cove had several family members for a single headstone. I separated out the individual names and repeated the verse so people could identify them as the same family. The headstones were read, recorded and transcribed by FRANK & HEATHER KING, July 1999. While we have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be errors. |

Name in Record | Description of error / additional information | My Name |
AVERY | Sarah wife of Isaac Avery died March 30, 1913 age 44 This headstone was inside a plot that is surrounded by an iron picket fence. The area is totally filled with a lilac tree and wild roses. I could spy the headstone through the absolute jungle, and with many scratches I got over the fence and through the lilacs to inscribe her stone! | Susan Snelgrove |
HOSKINS | John Hoskins. I believe this is the stone that Frank recorded as being very large and "unidentified". It starts out "Sacred". I believe I could make out the name "John Hoskins" . This would be the son of the famous minister John Hoskins Sr. who came to Trinity Bay, and I think ended up in Old Perlican. His son also became a minister, and it is this John Hoskins Jr. who went to Grates Cove (according to Enc. of Nfld/Lab, it was in 1792). Although it is difficult to read, knowing that information helped me decipher the name. I am quite sure it is John Hoskins Jr., which would explain why he got such a super duper size headstone. I'm not sure when he died, but likely well before 1850, which explains why the stone is so hard to read. He was likely the minister of the church when he died, and buried in their graveyard. Couldn't read anything further. If Frank ever goes back to Grates, perhaps he can look again to see if he agrees with me...... | Susan Snelgrove |
JANES | JANES, first name unknown. I have the transcription in my records as SAMUEL JANES. | Susan Snelgrove |
BENSON | Students have been recently mowing part of the field, and uncovered two old headstones. They were both lying flat on the ground. "Joseph Benson, died Nov. 19, 1846 aged 68 years and his beloved wife Mary who died May 22, 1859 aged 73 years". These are my gggg grandparents. | Susan Snelgrove |
COOPER | The following stone was broken into 3 distinct pieces and so some of the info was hard to read where the cracks were. This is a very early one as well: "Sacred to the memory of Margaret Cooper, wife of the late George Cooper, respected inhabitant of this place, who departed this life (illegible) Oct 20th 1812 aged 82 years." The number 1812 looked quite clear, but I have a slight doubt that the number might have been 1842, because I thought I could possibly feel something to the left of t he "1" with my finger, making it a "4". I believe this is the George Cooper who is named on the census for 1800/1801,and likely the first Coopers who came from Lower Island Cove to the Grates. | Susan Snelgrove |
COOPER | This past July I did a grave rubbing of the stone for Margaret Cooper. The stone is fallen and broken in 3 pieces, very poor condition. With the naked eye, the death date looks like 1812, aged 82 years, but the rubbing clearly showed the date to be 1842. | Lois Calka |
HOSKINS | This refers to the large stone that Frank labeled as "unidentified" in his last entry. In Aug 2001, I was able to transcribe the stone as follows: "Sacred to the memory of Mr. John Hoskins who for -- years --- charged the --- old ---- and Teacher in this Place. He rendered his soul to God the 28th day of Jan. 1828 in the ?0th year of his age. He lived ---- and died lamented. His ----- on high but this frail memorial of a good and honest man ----- (a lot remaining but undecipherable). | Susan Snelgrove |
COOPER | A grave rubbing of Mary Ann Cooper's stone revealed the following: "In loving memory of Mary Ann, the beloved wife of Reuben Cooper, died Aug 30 1893 Aged 58 years". She was my gg grandmother. | Lois Calka |
COOPER | There is an old headstone for Margaret Cooper who died age 82. Most researchers erroneously believe that she died in 1812. Her stone is fragmented and some spots are worn and hard to read. I too thought the death date said 1812, but I thought I felt an indentation in the stone that would possibly make it 1842. Lois Calka posted information at GenWeb stating that she had done a rubbing of the stone last summer, and the date was 1842. I took the opportunity to go back and do my own rubbi ng, and can confirm that Lois is right on! Margaret died 1842. If people want proof, I can get you a copy of my rubbing which I kept. There is no doubt of the date. Thought this was important to mention, as many people researching Coopers think Margaret (and her husband, presumably George) were born 1730, when in fact it is 1760. | Susan Snelgrove |
BENSON | New stone uncovered: Erected by Lucinda Benson in memory of her husband William John Benson, died Feb 3, 1926, aged 63 years. | Susan Snelgrove |
JANES | I previously reported the stone for Samuel Janes who died Feb 19, 1900 age 75. This stone is in 2 pieces, and this time I noticed that the top of the stone starts with "In memory of Eliza Jane, who died Sept ... aged 8[?]8 years, also her beloved husband Samuel Janes..... | Susan Snelgrove |
