"The Pilot", Boston Newspaper Announcements

The Search for Missing Friends, Irish Immigrant Advertisements Placed in the Boston Pilot

The Pilot is the weekly publication of the Archdiocese of Boston and began publication in the early 1800s; it still is published to this day. Beginning in 1835, the newspaper began offering a free advertising service for persons who were trying to locate missing relatives and friends who may have been separated from each other during the immigration waves, which were occurring. The paper had a wide circulation and the columns proved to be very popular. As can be evidenced by some of the listings, it seems the circulation was greater than the immediate Boston area. The advertisements ran continuously for more than 75 years. For the benefit of researchers who might be unfamiliar with geographic place names, it should be pointed out that during the early years (perhaps 1835-1860) it was common to us the abbreviation MS for the State of Massachusetts; subsequently you will see this referenced as MASS, which is more understood. Especially when citing lesser-known towns of Massachusetts, this could confuse some folks who might interpret MS to refer to Missouri. From my knowledge of the area, every listing I have come across which states MS does refer to Massachusetts.

The records were collected by PATRICIA MONAHAN, and transcribed by SUE O'NEILL in July 2001. While we have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be typographical errors.
