| CHANNEL - The most westerly settlement of importance in Newfoundland, district of Burgeo and La Poile. It is a place of considerable trade with several mercantile establishments. The inhabitants carry on the cod fishery all the year round, and halibut is caught to a considerable extent. It is a post town and a port of entry, and the last station on the western steam route. Distant from Rose Blanche 15 miles by boat. New York, Newfoundland and London Telegraph Co. has an office here. Distant from St. John's by steamer 300 miles, fare $10.00. Mail fortnightly. Population 584. |
