1781 – 1790 Voyages, to and from Newfoundland

Extracted from Lloyd's Lists, London (Incomplete)
(While a fair sampling is extracted here; this listing is not a "complete" record listing, of Newfoundland Lloyd’s Lists voyage entries.) Vessels could be constructed cheaper in Colonial America, where virgin timber was limitless, than could be done back home in England. (Note: This listing may contain contractions, spelling and/or transcription errors, as sometimes extracted from typed material. Correction or improvement is possible in certain cases.) Voyages in which Newfoundland may have been an interim port, and for which Newfoundland was not a specifically named port within the lists, are not included here, except as examples, notes, endnotes, or other, which are asterisked as *****.

Transcribed and contributed by David Anstey. (Note: This listing may contain contractions, spelling and/or transcription errors. Correction or improvement is possible in certain cases). While I have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be errors.

Nov 23, 1784 edition entry. The Kemp family.

The Kemp family originated in Kent, having distinguished careers in the Church there. One John Kemp had been Archbishop of Canterbury. Edward Kemp moved his family into West Hampshire, late in the 16th century. On his death in 1605, a commemorative brass plate was placed in Beaulieu Church. Edward's son Thomas Kemp, was Mayor of Christchurch three times, between 1625 and 1640. As well, Thomas was MP for Christchurch and Lymington. Later family members became mariners, captains, and merchants in the arduous Newfoundland trade.

By 1725, the Kemp family along with Fryer, Gosse & Pack, Pike, Green, and Slade; were trading out of Carbonear, Conception Bay. Six major firms at the time.

In 1739, James Kemp was owner and Captain, of the "Neptune" of 151 tons, out of Poole, Dorset.

In 1761, the Navy told the merchants, it could give no protection to the Newfoundland fleet on their return trip home. Kemp's "Neptune", was chosen to be the armed merchantman, to escort the Newfoundland fishing fleet home. 20 Guns were installed, and with a crew of 125 men, the Navy seconded one of its Lieutenants to take charge of her.

When James Kemp died, his firm was taken over by Martin Kemp, who moved from Christchurch to Poole, where, in 1755, he wed Mary Welch of Lymington.

Martin Kemp left the Anglican Church of his ancestors, and joined the Congregational Church in Hill Street, Poole. Theological issuses arose, and Martin Kemp, Deacon; along with the Linthornes, Durrells, Ledgards, Gillinghams, Millers, and other leading Poole families, left the Arian folk of the Congregational Chapel, and built a new Chapel in Leg Lane (Lagland Street). This became the Independant Church. The old Congregational Chapel in Hill Street, became a Unitarian Chapel. Martin Kemp died in 1772, and Rev Edward Ashburner succeeded him as Deacon at the Independant Chapel. Martin's son George Kemp, was barely 16 years of age when his father died. George's younger siblings were John Mary & James. Mary Welch Kemp was also pregnant at the time with a fifth child. Martin Kemp's executors, were Mary Welch Kemp's father and brother, London Bankers. Mary's brother George Welch, took on the general management of the Kemp family's Newfoundland trade. George appointed John Green of Poole, Newfoundland trader, and John Holden of London, Banker, as joint business managers, for the Newfoundland trade. The Kemp business was not one of the larger merchant operations in Newfoundland, when brothers George and James Kemp, took back the reins of the business from the executors of Martin Kemp. In 1781, George Kemp, like his father Martin, became deacon of the Independant Church. The Kemp firm became known as G & J Kemp. George Kemp wed Sarah Gosse, daughter of one of the firms cloth manufacturing suppliers of, Ringwood; and then went to reside at Ringwood. Sarah's uncle, John Gosse, was agent for the G & J Kemp, in Newfoundland. Another uncle Henry Gosse, worked for Benjamin Lester. Sarah's brother Thomas Gosse, was the father of Phillip Henry Gosse, who worked for Garland in Poole, afterwards the Slade firm in Newfoundland; and still later became a zoological writer. When the tutor and manager, of the firm of G & J Kemp, John Green became deceased, there were no executors or heirs to take over the Green family's, Newfoundland trade. The Green firm was purchased by William Pike, the other large Poole merchant in Conception Bay. In 1785, the two firms of Pike and Green, had separately been classed as two of the strongest in Newfoundland. The new firm of Pike & Green, was thus very large. Just before the turn of the century, G & J Kemp took over Pike & Green, and in one stroke, G & J Kemp had become one of the largest merchanting houses, in Newfoundland. ( Pike & Green = William Pike, and John & Young Green of Poole, and Conception Bay, Newfoundland. ) G & J Kemp built many ocean going vessels, and also many boats for the "Planters"; as the independant fishermen in Newfoundland were called.

{ Consider: Who supplied the boats for the early Newfoundland Planters, within the various early Newfoundland Census'? Such may assist determine the origins of the early Planter folk. }

In the early 1800's, the Kemp firm owned the "General Wolfe", which in the Second American War of Independance, brought much needed supplies from Quebec to Carbonear, outsailing an American privateer, which was in pursuit. { Consider such parallel voyages, England to Quebec, to Newfoundland; in earlier wartime era. }

In 1817, Edward Kemp, eldest son of James Kemp, was agent for G & J Kemp at Brigus, in Newfoundland. He wrote home that in the current fishery depression,

supplies were exhausted, food was being rationed, and he feared a riot at the first sight of a provision ship, sailing into that port. Shortly after Edward was drowned while crossing in an open boat from Brigus, to the other firms station, in Carbonear. In 1815, George Kemp remarried to 31 year old Elizabeth Knight ( nee Pearce ). In 1824, the partners of G & J Kemp, sold out to Fryer, Gosse and Pack. George Kemp died in June 1845, and was buried in Skinner Street Chapel. Martin Kemp Welch, youngest brother to George and James Kemp, had gone into partnership with G. W. Ledgard, in his banks at Poole and Ringwood; and died in 1837.

There was another well known commercial link which brought Irishmen to the shores of Newfoundland and to Acadia. The port of Wexford had an extensive commercial relationship with a number of ports in France: Irish merchants had a foothold in St. Malo, Bordeax and Nantes and a number of Irish traders and fishermen engaged in the very large French fishery conducted in Newfoundland and Acadia. When Ginkle was blasting away at the walls of Irish history, the French relief of the Siege of Limerick, John Aylward and his Irish-French brother Paul were on their way to Placentia in Terra Nova as agents for an Irish-French enterprise operating out of Nantes. It is fascinating to see how a man like John Aylward, a Catholic merchant from Waterford, could take such a prominent part in 17th century European life. Agent for the French at Placentia, he took time to secure a nice plantation for himself in the West Country English stronghold of St. John's. which he later sold to the Holdsworths of Dartmouth who built with it one of the largest fortunes made in the Newfoundland trade. He also reported to the Board of Trade and Plantation in London on the French operation at Placentia in which he had recently participated. When he returned to the west of England in 1705, he married Dorothy Trevelyan, a Catholic Lady of ancient Celtic lineage.

In 1705/6, Arthur Holdsworth, bought fishing rights and land in Newfoundland from widows Joan Burrows and Joan Churchill, as well as from John Aylward.
