1741 Voyages, to and from Newfoundland

Extracted from Lloyd's Lists, London (Julian Calendar)
Vessels could be constructed cheaper in Colonial America where virgin timber was limitless, than could be done back home in England. Voyages in which Newfoundland may have been an interim port, and for which Newfoundland was not a specifically named port within the lists, are not included here, except as examples, which are asterisked as *****.

Transcribed and contributed by David Anstey. (Note: This listing may contain contractions, spelling and/or transcription errors. Correction or improvement is possible in certain cases). While we have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be errors.

Endnotes:

  1. 1732. John Moors of Christchurch, Hampshire, at Trinity; in the vessel "Agnes & Mary".

The Book of Newfoundland. Copyright 1939. Page 68.

In 1761, George Pottle, an Englishman, and Captain of the guard, in King George III's Guard, took passage out of Poole, Dorset, bound to Newfoundland, and settled at Bonavista. Miss Jennings, later Mrs. Pottle, also eloped from Poole, in 1761. "Ran away with George Pottle." George (Pottle) wed Miss Jennings, a grand-daughter of the celebrated Sarah, first Dutchess of Marlborough, and Lady in Waiting to Queen Charlotte. (Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wed King George III. Both of German descent.)

Mr. and Mrs. George Pottle had a daughter Mary, born at Bonavista, Newfoundland on August 24, 1787. (Note: The birth date is copyrighted in error, per volume II.) George Goff of Bonavista married Miss Mary Pottle. Wed by a lay preacher of Bonavista, Mr. Ackerman, under a licence from the Bishop of Nova Scotia, of whose diocese Newfoundland was then a part.

The Office of the Bishop of Nova Scotia was created on August 11, 1787. This was the proper legal and hierarchial place for Newfoundlanders to obtain marriage licences after the See was created. The Bishop of London was unlikely to issue marriage licences for Newfoundlanders, when he had created the See of Nova Scotia, which in turn was the logical hierarchial Church of England office, expected to perform such functions. The marriage licence process was delegated, in entirely normal fashion, by the Bishop of London to the Bishop of Nova Scotia. Have any Newfoundland marriage licences issued by the Bishop of Nova Scotia, post August, 1787, survived in Nova Scotia Archives?

Mary Pottle wed George Goff of Bonavista. (On August 24, 1787.) George and Mary Goff, had a daughter, Tryphena (Fanny/Pheenie) Goss.

George and Mary Goss migrated from Bonavista to Portugal Cove and ran an inn. Captain Pottle followed and died there in 1826. Captain Pottle's grave is side by side with that of his grand-daughter, Tryphena's. Tryphena Goss died March 1823, just prior to her intended marriage, on wedding day.

  1. In 1675 when the English parliament ordered Sir John Berry to initiate the removal of permanent Newfoundland planter settlers, the migratory fishermen, feeling backed by English Law, effected much destruction upon the settlers. Henry Pynn led the Bristol's Hope / Harbour Grace Planters, in their fight against the migratory fishers to remain in Harbour Grace. The settlers stated their intentions: that if forced to abandon the Newfoundland plantation, they would come home to England, effecting economic burden on their respective English parishes—or they would settle the other side of Cape Race, with the French. Parliament became dismayed at such ideas and relented, allowing the planters (1,655 men women & children) to remain in their Newfoundland livelihood.

  1. Migratory fishermen were not officially intended, or expected, to remain/overwinter at the English Crown's Newfoundland fishery worksite/preserve. As sometimes occurs today, the letter of the law was not enforced back then. In spite of these intentions/expectations, some fishermen chose to remain in Newfoundland rather than continue repeating the costly, and sometimes perilous, Atlantic voyage each season. Some would have intermarried with remaining earlier "legally settled" colonists. Others would have wed back home in their English hometowns, taking their new partners to Newfoundland with them. In such a manner, early Newfoundland families formed. Bristol's Hope land was purchased from The London & Bristol Company, and this became a fishery operation under the administration of Bristol aldermen. Earlier proprietary colonial lofty hopes of mining, etc., envisioned by the administrators, were replaced over time by reality. Codfish became "King", in Newfoundland. Migratory adventurers and fishermen became permanent settlers, in spite of an official English policy attempting to discourage settlement.

  1. The Whiteway family in Newfoundland largely has roots at Bickington—Shaldon, Devon. Resident at Shaldon, but referred to as out of Teignmouth.
William Nicholas Whiteway at Exploit's Island, Notre Dame Bay, is downline, as are other Whiteways from the same local area of Devon.
