Check the various voyages for Tucker, John Goss, James Drew/J. Newell/Sealey/R. Algar/Mitchell, etc. Francis Newell owned land in Port de Grave, early 1800's. Mitchell's were resident. The author of these Newfoundland voyage files, has but looked with utmost brevity. And yes, has managed to glean a few names, and lines... But the author certainly knows little of early Port de Grave... With general study then, how much more could be understood? Many listing entries are not repeated, within this file. Caution is thrown. A very few asterisked entries may or may not, be Newfoundland pertinent. If one discussed early Fogo Island... The Barnes Captains. Payne. John Carter & Co. of Hamworthy Peninsula, Poole, Dorset. But the author certainly knows little of early Fogo Island... 3. A sometime different tonnage is more rarely noted in the original records, for the same vessel. Sometimes due to repairs. However the reader may find an instance without explanation. Small tonnage. A traditional vessel construction, rule of thumb was a foot plus of length, per ton of cargo capacity. This generally applies to smaller type vessels, like Newfoundland schooners. Two entries only for tons/guns/men doesn’t imply, no guns on-board. Usually at least a single or double gun, etc. Some owners had vessels which were constant traders. Only a couple of examples are indicated. 4. Attempting to construct the age of an early Newfoundland ancestor? The applied "Legal" titles of Mr. & Mrs, occurred in English/British records; at the fulfillment of the English/British Legal age of 21 years. Consider the probate/renunciation of someone's Will; inheritance of estate/business/river patents; liable debts; guardianship of minors; etc. In early Newfoundland, a case may be found where the scale of adherence to this legality, may be missed by a "small few" months, or less. Practically, what were the odds of one traveling to England, to locate a twenty one year old baptism record. What proof of age, lay in early resident Newfoundland? A memory deposition to a JP? Who would challenge, to ascertain whether a young Jack, or Missus, legally was Mr., Mrs.; or a minor? Would cash/debt/capital, be a factor? 5.
