NL GenWebPlacentia Bay Region ~ Placentia Bay East DistrictPlacentia - Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Cemetery Part VIQ - YThis is the oldest, and original Catholic cemetery, in the town of Placentia. It is located high on top of a hill in the middle of the town. The view from the top of the hill provides spectacular scenery of the town below. The cemetery is accessible by car. A paved road takes you to the top of the hill, with parking just outside the gate. A very narrow, gravel road allows for limited access to the graveyard itself. The grave sites are spread out over the crest of the hill in a pattern that allows most of the headstones to face a northerly direction. There are several sectors of the cemetery that reflect the development and expansion over the past century. The tradition of family plots is reasonably maintained throughout. This was a very difficult cemetery to gather information from many of the headstones. Many headstones were very old, with the lettering badly deteriorated. Much of the information was further lost by damage to the headstones. Several headstones were lying on the ground, or broken in large pieces. We would like to acknowledge the help of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Collins, and particularly their two sons - Peter and Michael. These headstones were read, recorded and transcribed by FRANK KING and HEATHER KING, July 2000. While we have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be typographical errors or omissions. |
