In re
         Robert Barrett deceased.

In the name of God Amen.     The seventeenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven.     I Robert Barrett of Woody Island Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, being thro’ the blessing of God in a sound state of mind and memory, but calling to mind the frail tenure of this life & that it is appointed unto men once to die do make & ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say, principally and first of all I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God and the disposal of my body I leave to the entire discretion of my friends-     With respect to my worldly estate, I give bequeath and dispose of it in the manner and proportions following:

First, I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Monks the sum of one hundred pounds, together with my dwelling house and furniture, and my piece of land situated at Browns point.

Secondly I will and bequeath to my grandsons John Barrett (Jonas Barrett son), and Robert John Barrett (Samuel Barretts son) my store, stages and about fifteen acres of land, free from all encumbrances;     To have and to hold the same in common share and share alike.

Thirdly, I request that all the materials used by me in the prosecution of the fishing voyage, consisting of boats, nets, buoys, hooks, seines et cetera after my decease, be left on the fishing room for the use of my three sons James, Jonas and Samuel-

Fourthly I give and bequeath to my sons Benjamin, James, Jonas & Samuel, the sum of one hundred pounds each; to my daughters Jane and Lucretia one hundred pounds each- to my grandchild Archibald Stacy fifty pounds and to my grandchildren Charles Stacy, John Stacy, Samuel James Stacy, Robert Henry Stacy and Lydia Stacy ten pounds each-

Fifthly, I give and bequeath to my niece Sarah Diamond of Croscomb, in the County of Dorset England the sum of ten pounds- Sixthly I request that the sum of ten pounds be expended in erecting a headstone to the memory of my dear departed wife, myself and children

Seventhly I appoint the Revd Jno Kingwell and Mr. James Hollett to be the executors of this my last will and testament     In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, the day and year above written.     Robert his X mark Barrett Sr (LS)     Sign’d seal’d publish’d pronounced & declar’d by the said Robert Barrett as his last will and testament, in the presence of us the subscribers-     Jno Kingwell, Josiah his X mark Allen.     Robt his X mark Barrett Jr.
