Transcriber's Notes

The above is a list of birth, marriage and death returns for the District of Placentia and St. Mary's, for the time period 1898-1915. Primary research focus for this study group will be limited to a small Catholic enclave of Anglo-Irish, French and Newfoundland Mi'kmaw families formerly residing in the Black River-Piper's Hole, St. Kyran's, & Sound Island, P.B. areas. Families of focus include Barrington (also Baryngton-Bar(r)enton) (Mi'kmaq), John [Baptiste] (Mi'kmaq), Martin (French), and Pike (Anglo-Irish). Note that the Pike family of Baker's Cove (near Garden Cove-Black River), Culleton's Strait (near St. Kyran's), and Pike Place (Brown's Island), Indian Cove, Piper's Hole River, have been only partially included here in this study. For further information on baptisms for this family not recorded herein the reader is directed to David Pike's Family History and Genealogy Resources website, and unpublished family history and genealogy notes at request of researcher.

Note also that none of the PANL Vital Statistics listed below for the said family members from this area of Upper Placentia Bay have been found to date in the Argentia RC, Burin RC, Grand Falls RC, Placentia RC (or PB Family History Records), and Whitbourne RC public-access parish registers. The Vital Stats records included herein, in absence of any coexisting parish records that did not survive, provide the only evidence for the presence of these families in this remote area for this era, beyond oral tradition and some business directories. It is possible that these records have been lost, destroyed by fire or water damage, misplaced in another parish archival collection outside the PB district, or failed to reach the local parish archival library collection for transcription and copying. This non-intentional lack of focus or attention by record keepers during this time period may have resulted from the fact that this area was only seasonally or semi-permanently settled due to its remote geographic location. With the exception of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church at Bollard's Town (Muddy Hole), Sound Island, a permanent RC mission was never established in the Piper's Hole-Black River area, whereby residents received essential services by a visiting parish priest, such Fathers Doutney, Cacciola, and White. Further archival and genealogical research on these family names for this local area may reveal more evidence so as to fill in the many gaps and missing links of the puzzle.
