NL GenWebNotre Dame Bay Region ~ Fogo / Twillingate DistrictFogo - Roman Catholic Cemetery on Banks Cove RoadIn this cemetery, I was "arm pit" high in weeds and underbrush. The flies were very nasty, even though I had taken the precaution to wear long pants, long sleeved shirt, high boots, hat and bug spray. There were quite a number of exposed graves, where I could see the metal vault (made of, what appeared to be galvanized tin) that surrounded the coffins. Given the circumstances, I only noted the pertinent information - Arlene 1999This Cemetery is located on Banks Cove Road, in the Village of Fogo. Last year the cemetery was very overgrown, and although we were able to document some of the headstones, many more were missed. During this passed year, Betty Cole had spearheaded a clean-up project, which enabled us to document much more data during our visit in the summer of 2000. Many headstones are missing or illegible. Four large step-stones have been added for a path into the cemetery. The stones are in memory of people buried, their stones or wooden crosses no longer visible. I have noted the inscriptions on the step-stones at the end of this list. It is generally beli eved the cemetery was used by both Catholics and United Churches in earlier years. This then is a continuance of the data collected during the summer of 1999 - Arlene 2000 Headstone inscriptions were collected and compiled by ARLENE BENNETT, July 1999. While I have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be typographical errors. |
