Transcriber's notes on the census

It looks as if fishing boat capacity was measured in quintals, not in tons. The writing is definitely qtls. There are problems with the number of members of religious denominations exceeding the number of inhabitants (i.e. at Indian Burying Place). The following notes are based on checking the census transcription against the entries for the various communities in the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador (ENL), and surname entries in Family Names of the Island of Newfoundland by E. R. Seary (FN). They are supplemented, in the section on Fortune Harbour, by notes from John Carrick Greene's Of Fish and Family. These extracts illustrate the difficulties created by surname variations. Thanks are due to Dave Anstey and Jill Marshall for their transcriptions, which were helpful in deciphering some of the trickier entries.

FLURRY'S BIGHT

FN
A Giles Budgell is recorded in Fleury Bight in 1842, but there is no mention of John or Joseph Budgell. A John Budgell is recorded farming at Fortune Harbour in 1871. A "Stephen Sharen or Shearing" is recorded at Fleury Bight, 1842-1848. A Stephen Sherron is recorded at New Bay Head, 1846. Stephen and William Sharon are recorded at New Bay in 1871.

There is no record of Charles or George House.

There is no record of Edward Hollahan.

No Edward Chipman is recorded at Flurry's Bight. However, an Edward Chipman is recorded as having married at Fortune Harbour in 1831.

There is no record of William Glasby (or Gillespie) at Flurry's Bight.

ENL
According to the Encyclopedia, the place name was spelt Fluny's Bight on the Census of 1836. It notes "The first census of the settlement was reported in 1836. Thirty-five inhabitants and nine fishing servants (twenty-two Roman Catholic and twenty-two Church of England) occupied seven dwellings and prosecuted the small-boat, inshore cod fishery. According to E. R. Seary (1976) a Giles Budgell and a Stephen Sharen or Shearing were reported to be residents of 'Fleury Bight' in 1842. Budgell is an Irish name and it had been recorded in Tilting, Fogo and Fortune Harbour. According to family tradition a Sharron from England settled at Wild Bight, Green Bay and branches of the family later spelled the name Shirren or Sherran. A Robert House was reported to be a resident of New Bay Head (the northwestern tip of the New Bay peninsula, formed in part by a shallow cove next to Flurry's Bight) in 1851. Lovell's Newfoundland Directory (1871) described 'Flurry's Bight' as a 'small fishing settlement….Population 30,' and listed Thomas, William and William Budgell [sic], Michael Sweeney, Robert House, Francis Shearing and George Washburn as fishermen of the settlement."
