| This Indenture made the
thirteenth day of October in the Sixteenth Year of the Reign of our
Sovereign Lady Victoria, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Ireland, Queen, Defender of the Faith, and in the Year
of Our Lord, one thousand Eight hundred and Fifty Two Between George
Hodder, aged 12 years or thereabouts, of Twillingate in the Northern
District of Newfoundland, with the Consent of his Uncle, Richard Hodder of
Twillingate, aforesaid Cooper, and George Early Ridout of Fogo, in the
said District, Agent of Robert Slade of the Borough of Poole, Dorset,
England. WITNESSETH that the said George Hodder hath put, place and bound,
and by these presents Doth put, place and bind himself unto Robert Slade
of Poole, in the County of Dorset, England, of John Slade and Company, to
dwell and serve after the manner of an apprentice, for, during and until
the full term and time of Nine years to be Computed from the 21 day of May
– last part or otherwise until he shall attain the age of Twenty one years
and ended.
During all which time the Said apprentice, his said Master faithfully shall have his secrets keep, and all his lawful commands every where gladly do; hurt to his Master he shall not do, nor waste, nor embezzle his goods; nor suffer such things to be done by others, without, to the utmost of his power, giving Notice of, and preventing the same. At Cards, Dice or other unlawful games, he shall not play. Ale houses, Taverns or Houses of ill-fame he shall not frequent, nor absent himself by day or night without leave first had and obtained, but in all things toward his said Master and those of his Establishment as a good, honest and faithful Apprentice demean himself; and the said Robert Slade doth covenant and agree to teach and instruct or Cause the said apprentice to be taught and instructed in the Trade, Act, or Mystery of a Cooper, and also during the said term provide for and give the said apprentice good and sufficient Meat, Drink, Lodging, Washing and (keeping ?) Clothing__ Provide, and it is further agreed that during the last three years of the said Term, the said George Hodder shall be paid the following sums in lieu of Clothing, that is to say to (find?) himself in wearing apparel, the following sums for the year ending 1859 – Ten pounds Currency; for the year ending 1860 – Fifteen pounds; for the year ending 1861 – Twenty pounds Currency; ( ? ) the period at which his said apprenticeship terminates. In Witness where of the said parties, their Hands and Seals interchangeably have set the day and year first above written.
