Notre Dame Bay Region ~ Fogo / Twillingate District

A partial miscellany of the early Fogo-Twillingate voyages, merchants and captains.

The folk below here, often interacted with each other, and with further unnamed folk like Thomas Clarke, Samuel Bowden, Moses Hooper, Thomas Tizzard, etc. In the 1720’s, the Notre Dame Bay’s salmon Fishery was in its infant stages. While trapping and sealing efforts were enjoined with the traditional cod fisheries. Joseph White, of the Poole, Dorset; Society of Friends, appears the most prominent/dominant merchant presence, in infant Notre Dame Bay.

Endnotes:

The birth of Lawrence Smith apparently does not show per the Milton, Hampshire registers. Nor Martha Bishop's birth.

Lawrence Smith wed Martha Bishop at Milton, Hampshire, on Jan 25, 1727/8, by banns. ( Both parties present. )

Apparently the Smith family were protestant dissenters at Milton.

Were any of Lawrence Smith’s children baptized at Milton. Given his capacity as a ship captain.

Lawrence Smith, husband of Martha Bishop, born circa 1702?, would have been about 80 years old in 1782.

It is seen that Lawrence Smith was a Captain, and a Planter. *It was not uncommon for a captain’s family folk to settle in early Newfoundland.

any right to her late husband's goods. ( Her late husband Thomas Bishop, of Fogo. )

56M83/PO27/57 Removal order to Milton from Sopley, Winiford Bishop, Spinster. 1800.

Simon Adey married Elizabeth Bishop of Milton, at Milton, by banns, on Jan 1, 1733/4. Their Children, all baptized at Sopley were:

Ann Feb 16, 1734/5, Simon Jun 20, 1739, Sarah Feb 23, 1741, Thomas Aug 19, 1744, John Feb 12, 1746 & William Feb 8, 1750.

For 46 years, Simon was a parish clerk at Sopley, and was buried on Feb 11, 1778.

Simon Adey's name is associated with the following three Hampshire Record Office documents.

1752 Bonavista (Newfoundland): William Brenton, the elder of Sophy (Sopley?), Southampton. His heirs; Miller and William Brenton the younger (son & heir), property to Mortyn Harding of Sturminster Marshall. Wit: John Rose & John Oake, property borders on Lawrence Smith & George Brent.

Morton Harding found in the Newfoundland records, bapt 1704 Sturminster Marshall, son of John Harding and Mary Pinchard.

The will of Montagu Harding c1759, of Sturminster Marshall, Dorset, now residing Bayly's Cove [i.e. Bonavista, Newfoundland]. Bequests to sister Susannah Harding and to friend John Bugden, son of John Bugden of Trinity, Boatkeeper. Also mentions James Lands (Sanders?) [most likely James Saunders] of Bonavista, Boatkeeper. This is a Wimborne Minster Will.
