Matthew's Cove Roman Catholic Cemetery

Matthew’s Cove (or Mattie’s Cove) is a former fishing community located on Great Caribou Island, which is adjacent to Battle Harbour Island. This cemetery, located behind Matthew’s Cove, served the small Roman Catholic population that lived in the Battle Harbour area.

The transcription was done by CINDY GIBBONS in 2000. While I have endeavored to be as correct as humanly possible, there may be typographical errors.

Erected by Joseph Murn in memory of his wife Ellen, died August 6, 1901, aged 49 years.

Benjamin Holloway, who died March 29, 1872, aged 88.

James Russell, 9 April 1863, aged -8 years.

Erected to the memory of Johanna, beloved wife of James Russell, born in Waterford, Ireland, who died June 17, 1873, aged 73 years.

Edward Russell at Matthew’s Cove, Labrador, June 16, 1869, also his beloved wife Margaret, who died July 7, 1878.

Murphy. In loving memory of Denis, died March 31, 1965, aged 73 years; Josephine, died May 9, 1964, aged 59 years; their daughter Ellen, died October 9, 1964, aged 19 years.

‘Uncle’ Peter (Pascal) Blanchard, son of Magloire and Claire Agathe Aucoin Blanchard. Born: Grand River, Codroy Valley, Newfoundland. Died Mary’s Harbour, Labrador, 30 October 1937.
