December 31, 1935	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Peter Aylward 13, passed away at Grand Falls Hospital, as a result of having his skull fractured in a collision with a truck, while sliding.
January 1, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Swedish Red Cross Unit on way to Southern Front, bombed by Italians in Abyssinia; 30 killed, including 2 Swedes. Comedy-Drama “Cinderella O’Reilly” presented at St. Mary’s Hall under auspices Terra Nova Council K of C. New Year ushered in under pleasant conditions, weather excellent, services at Churches well attended, and various entertainments largely patronized. New Year ushered in under William J Robinson , Esq., to be an officer of the Most Excellent (Civil Division) and H. V. Hutchings, Esq., and C. E. A Jeffery, Esq., to be members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Civil Division). 36th annual Church parade of the S. U. F. Clifton Lodge, No. 46, at Pouch Cove. Police and Firemen of the Central and West End stations, entertained about 450 and 3200 underprivileged children, respectively at their stations.
January 1, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Imperial Airways liner, "City of Hartoum” plunged into the sea, approaching Alexanderia from Marbelle Crete. Three members of crew, and nine passengers, lost. Gas Explosion which destroyed a six-story tenement house at Bufflo, N. Y., took toll of 3 lives. Searchers found body of Capt. Charles H Campbell, in the charred engine room of the oil tanker “General Douglas”, blasted by explosion and fire.

January 2, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Christmas Service under auspices of N. G. I. T., Held at Gower St. Church. Many districts in Southern half of England flooded through heavy rain. His Worship Mayor Carnell, addressed Rotary Club.
January 2, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Four killed, 5 missing, 18 injured when building collapsed at Havana.
January 2, 1936	MARRIAGES OF THE YEAR	Wilson Downey and Miss Lila Thorne, Winterton.
January 3, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Two well known French fliers, Saint Exupery and Prevost, missing since taking off Dec. 30th from Bengazi to Italian North Africa, found in exhausted condition in desert. Mail Clerk Hutchings, received slight injuries, when express derailed. Message from Bugeo stated storm of Dec. 31 caused $3,000 property damage at Fox Island. Mr. W. A. Anthony, Manager Bristol Grocery, given surprise party at his home.

January 5, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Meeting held R. C. Cathedral, under auspices of St. Vincent de Paul Society. His Grace, the Archbishop, addressed gathering. Business meeting held at Nickle Theatre. First train load newsprint arrived in city from Grand Falls. Mr. J. B. McEvoy addressed Holy Cross Literary Assoc. on Confederation. Mr. P. K Divine addressed Patrician Assoc. on “A Home and a Country".

January 6, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Supreme Court of the United States, smashed the Roosevelt Farm Aid Program. Power Naval conference reopened in London. Anti-British demonstrations on large scale, organized by Arab Nationalists. Community Centre in the Grenfell Building, officially opened by Mr. Gerald S. Doyle, Chairman of the committee, in presence of large gathering of registered members. Annual re-union Star of the Sea Association. Another ambulance unit in Abyssina, situated at Baggah Bur, and staffed by Egyptian and British personnel, bombed by Italians.
January 6, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Bodies of Philip Lake, native of Newfoundland, his wife and young son, found near ruins of their burned home, at Pacific Junction, N. B.
January 7, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	His Excellency the Governor and Lady Anderson, at home at Government House to all those who wished to bid them a personal farewell. Spanish Parliament dissolved. Annual meeting St. John’s Lodge No.5 S. U. F. and election of officers. Enjoyable dance at Strand.

Lord Bishop of Newfoundland gave interesting address at Feildian Club smoker. The blind of the city entertained by the King’s Daughter's Group of Gower St. United Church. Annual meeting Commercial Traveler’s Association. Official opening Stroller’s A. A. new club rooms.

Gosling Memorial Library officially opened by His excellency the Governor, Sir David Murray Anderson. Double dwelling on Cavell Avenue, owned by Silas Vokey, badly damaged by fire. Mr. A. S. Wadden of Buchanan St. hit by car and badly injured. Rotarian C. E. Hunt, K.C. addressed Rotary.

January 10, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Gale which swept British Iles, took 16 lives, 7 of which were lost at sea. 200 dead from landslide, following earthquake at Bogota, Colombia.
January 11, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Mr. John B McEvoy, L.L.B special speaker at meeting of law Students Club. Members of the Executive Committee of Nonia, Society for Protection of Animals Jubilee Guild, Nurses Special Need Association, Child Welfare Association and Girl Guides, made presentation to Lady Anderson, of a Newfoundland Silver Fox Skin.
January 11, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Mr. Walter H. Clayton, President of the Clayton Construction Company of St. John’s, lost his life when living quarters adjoining Cold Storage Plant, under construction at Port aux Basques, destroyed by fire.

January 12, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Mr. and Mrs. Denis J Furlong celebrated 25th anniversary of their wedding. C. E. Hunt, Esq., K. C. special speaker at educational entertainment under auspices of Nfld. Order of Antlers. Mr. W. J. Keough lectured to Patricians Association on “The Climax Approaches.” Samuel Wesley Jacobs Walsh of Western Bay, student of Theology in Boston University, awarded Jacob Sleeper Fellowship, providing $500 for study abroad. Mr. E. B. Foran gave interesting address “Leaders in a Century of Progress” to Holy Cross L.A. Governor and Lady Anderson said farewell to St. John’s and left by express en route to England.

January 13, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Archbishop O’Donnell died at Halifax, aged 61. Newfoundland Graduate Nurses Association held meeting and musical, at residence of Mrs. J. G. Higgins, Rennie’s Mill Rd. Strollers A. A. held enjoyable dance at Crosbie Hotel. Mr. J. M. Devine gave address on “Highlights of Broadway” to Knight of Columbus. First snow storm for winter. Atlantic lodge No. 1 L. O. O F. installation of officers.

January 13, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Mother and 8 children perished, when fire destroyed a cottage in which they lived at Tyldesly near Leigh, Lancashire. Mrs. Martha Simm, 52 of Corner Brook, accidentally killed by falling over stairs.

January 14, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Rt. Rev. Mons. Flynn, Pastor of St. Patrick’s, and Rev. R. McD. Murphy, Secretary to His Grace the Archbishop, left by express for Halifax, to represent His Grace at funeral obsequies of Archbishop O’Donnell of Halifax. Rover Scout, Ernest Clark of Twillingate group of Boy Scouts , received Gilt Cross for gallantry, in saving life of girl named Cook from drowning in July last. Wesley Literary Association started series of debates for 1936. Annual meeting St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

January 14, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Herbert Vowden, of Port aux Basques, Fireman on S. S. Sagona, killed instantly at Millertown Junction, when he fell under wheels of a moving train. Passenger plane crashed at Arkansas, 17 dead.
January 15, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Japanese delegation retire from naval conference. Spencer Club Card Party. Annual meeting George St. Young Men’s Bible Class.

January 16, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	"S. S. City of Hamburg arrived in port for repairs to rudder. French Premier Laval won strong vote of confidence, 315-252 in Chamber of Deputies. Harold Gross, coaching senior and college hockey teams, spoke before Rotary Club. Annual meeting Llewellyn Club. His Excellency, Vice Admiral Sir Humphrey Walwyn K. C.S.I. C.B., D.S.O., and Lady Walywyn, arrived by S. S. Newfoundland. They were accompanied by their son , Lieut. J. H. Walwyn, R. N. , A. D.C., and Capt., R. Schwerdt, R. N. Private Secretary. M. C. L. I. Debate “that the fisheries of Newfoundland can be so organized as to make the fishermen independent” won by affirmative. Annual meeting City Hockey League, at Crosbie Hotel. Hon, Sir John Hope Simpson, Commissioner for Natural Resources, and Hon. W. R. Howley, K. C. Commissioner of Justice, arrived by S. S. Newfoundland. Official statement said, that King George had developed signs of cardiac weakness, which must be regarded with some disquiet. Abyssinians suffer crushing defeat at hands of Italians invaders."

Epidemic of Influenza sweeping Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Mr. J. J. Meaney describes a visit to France, at educational entertainment at Queen’s theatre, under auspices of Nfld. Order of Antlers. Patrician Association enjoy excellent Musicale arranged by the “Mountaineers.” Dr. A. C. Hunter, M. A. gave “Some impressions of European Travel” to members of Holy Cross L. A.
January 19, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Tornado at Tallahassee, Fla., took toll of 6 lives. Storm swept Island of Somoa, taking 16 lives and destroying three-quarters of the banana crop.
January 20, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	His Majesty, King George V, passed away at Sandringham, after four days illness, aged 70. Mr. C. E. Hunt, K. C. gave interesting address on his travels from Halifax to Mexico, to members of Light & Power Association. His Excellency the Governor, Sir Humphrey Walwyn, K. C., S. I.., C. B., D. S. O., paid official visit to city fire halls.

January 21, 1936	MARRIAGES OF THE YEAR	Gordon Newport of this city and Miss Elizabeth Fiander of English Harbor West, at C of E Cathedral. Sydney Drinkwater, of Oxford, England and Miss Clarice Deria Wells, of Bay Roberts, at Toronto.
January 22, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Edward VIII proclaimed King, amid medieval pageantry, 39th Sovereign since Norman Conquest. Accession of King Edward VIII officially proclaimed in Newfoundland. His Excellency the Governor and Commissionaires, take oath of allegiance before official witness in Colonial Building. Shortly before midnight, Queen Mary accompanied by two ladies in waiting, made pilgrimage on foot, from Sandringham House to the Church of St. Mary Magdalen. Sympathy of whole world extended to Royal Family. French “Save the Franc” Cabinet reached its long expected collapse, precipitating a serious Government crises.

January 23, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	"King Edward VIII stood on silent prayer, as body of his father, George V, was borne to lie on the Catafalque of State, in ancient Westminster Hall. Municipal Council adjourned as mark of respect to late King. New Coastal Boat now under construction for Newfoundland Railway, at Phoenix Works, Merkswork, will be called “Northern Ranger”. Newfoundland Association at Toronto held annual meeting."

January 23, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Rev. Ebenezer Davis, native of Freshwater, and U. C. Clergyman at Nipper’s Harbor, lost his life when boat drifted on rocks, as he was returning from taking sick people home to Mission boat.
January 24, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	19th session of League of Nations closed. Mons. Serraut succeeded in forming new French Cabinet. Opening game Senior League Hockey. Guards defeated Feildians 2-1.

January 24, 1936	FATALITIES AND DISASTERS	Mrs. A. K. Noah, her three children, David 6, Robert 4½, and Angela 3, and the maid, Tryphena Sheppard, lost their lives when their home 10 Hamilton Street, was destroyed by fire.
January 25, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	No. 8 penstock, connecting the forebay with the power house at Deer Lake, burst and flooded the power house, submerging the generator and damaging 7 machines.

January 26, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	First Greek general election under restored Monarchy, passed on quietly. Rev. Bro. M. O’Hehir, spoke on “A Nation Greatness” to Holy Cross L. A. Patrician Association held first debate for season on the Relative value of press and radio, as an advertising medium. Col. Thomas A. Burton, Commander of the Salvation Army in Newfoundland, conducted Memorial Service in honor of our late Sovereign George V.

January 27, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Annual meeting Board of Trade. W. Angus Reid, elected President. St. bon’s defeated Holy Cross, 7-0.
January 27, 1936	NECROLOGY	Mrs. Jane WHITEWAY, 83. Michael HOGAN, Carbonear, 31. Samuel FISHER, Bonavista. Moody BRIDGER, Lewisport.
January 28, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Vast multitudes paid final homage to King George V, when his mortal remains were borne in funeral procession through the streets of London, and buried in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Official Memorial Service held in C. of E. Cathedral. His Excellency, the Governor attending. Memorial service at Roman Catholic, United, Presbyterian, and Congregational Churches, and at Jewish Synagogue.

January 30, 1935	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Egyptian riots ended, when neutral Cabinet formed by Ali Maher Pasha, and an appeal for aid issued by Nationalist leader Nahas Pasha. Annual meeting C. of E. institute. Miss Dickie, graduate of Mount Allison University in Household Science, arrived by S. S. Newfoundland, to take up position under the Dept. of Education. Annual meeting Congregation of Gower St. Church. Rev. James McNeill addressed Llewellyn Club, on “New Zealand”. M. C. L. I. debate “That belief in the Christian religion is indispensable to the maintenance of high ethical standards today,” won by affirmative. His Excellency the Governor, and Lady Walwyn, accompanied by Lieut. Walwyn , R. N. , A. D. C. paid official visit to Department of Health and Welfare. S. S. Sagona, chartered from the Railway by the International Power & Paper Co., Corner Brook , left port in command of Capt. Burgess. Annual smoker and presentation of prizes St. John’s Bowling Leagues.
January 30, 1936	NECROLOGY	John W. HODGE, formerly of Fogo, at Toronto, 85.
January 31, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	General Kondylls, of Greece, died suddenly of heart failure, Autopsy ordered. Premier Sarruat of France, makes appeal for political unity. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Private Secretary, Capt. C. M. P. Schwedt R. N., visited Department Finance and Customs, and General Post Office. Annual meeting Playgrounds and Recreation Association. President R. B. Herder. International Power and Paper officials arrived at Deer Lake, to inspect and advise on power house conditions. Rev. Br. J. C. Fennessey of St. Bon’s College, celebrated 50th anniversary of his entry into the Order of Irish Christian Brothers. Entertainment staged by pupils and address presented. Feildian hockey won from Holy Cross 4-2.

February 2, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Annual meeting Presentation Convent Ladies Association. Hon. W. R. Howley K. C., Commissioner of Justice, addressed Patrician Association on “fifty Years and over.” Rev. C. S. Eagan addressed Holy Cross L. A. on “Father Damien, the Leper Priest.”

February 3, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	First session of the committee of 18 experts, to study the question of oil sanctions against Italy, met a Geneva. Hon. J. C. Puddester, Commissioner for Public Health and Welfare, Dr. J. St. P. Knight, Chief Medical Officer, and Miss Whiteside, Superintendent of Nurses for the Department, left for Markland to arrange for beginning of Hospital activities there. Holy Cross team defeated Guards, 4-0 senior hockey. Newfoundland Light & Power Company employees given lecture by Mr. W. J. Keough on “The Changing World.” Card tournament also held.

February 4, 1936	MARRIAGES OF THE YEAR	Stanley Penney and Miss Viola Rowe, of Seldom, at Fogo. Benedict Miller and Miss Edith Loder, Fogo.
February 5, 1936	EVENTS OF THE YEAR AT HOME AND ABROAD	Motion for Britain to sponsor international peace conference, defeated in Commons 288-137. A. R. Graustein resigned as President of the International Power and Paper Co., Ltd. St. Bon’s defeated Feildians 5-2 in opening game inter-college hockey. His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captain Schwerdt, visited the Mental Hospital and the Sanatorium.

D. J. Van Bommell, director of the Community Centre, lectured to Rotary Club on “The League of Nations and the present world crisis.”

B. on January 5th, sentenced to be hanged with his brother on June 20th. Mrs. Mary Bannister, mother of the two murders, sentenced to 3½ years imprisonment, on charges of having stolen Betty Lake, child of Philip Lake. His Excellency the Governor, and Lady Walwyn and Lt. Walwyn, A.D. C. visited Power House at Petty Harbor. Lucy Harris, 9, of New Melourne, missing for 12 days, found about three miles from her home. Memorials defeated St. Bon’s, and Feildians defeated C. L. B. in senior basketball league, whilst Cells defeated C. L. B. Antlers defeated Guards, and fourth St. John’s defeated Memorials in intermediate league. Newfoundland Co-operative Association held annual meeting at Harbor Grace."

Dr. Harkness, of the Newfoundland Memorial College, gave most interesting address before Rotary Club on “Modern Statistics.”

Lady Walwyn distributed first basket. Recognition of Italian Sovereignty over Abyssinia by Switzerland. Pope Pius XI broadcast Christmas message over Vatican Station. Mounted Police waited on Sergt. William Russell, Officer in Charge, and presented him with beautifully engraved walking stick. Deputation from City Streets Department, called on Supt. P. J. Neville at his residence, and presented him with a very useful motor rug, as appreciation of goodwill, existing between him and his men. Mrssrs Bowring Bros. Ltd., presented cheque to Capt. Abraham Kean, O.B. E. in recognition of success achieved by him, during many years of service as Sealing Master.

Deserters from Red Army describe the situation on the Red front as desperate, about 5,000 Priests, including 10 Bishops, said to have been murdered thus far in Civil War. John B Ashley, son of Mr. And Mrs William J Ashley, graduate of St. Bonaventure’s College, now student at Dalhousie, winner of Rhodes Scholarship for 1937. Installation officers St. John’s Lodge. Past Master Jewel, presented to W. Bro. Campbell MacPherson, the retiring Master, photo of late Hon. J. A. Clift. Unveiled and presentation made to Hon. Sir John R. Bennett, K. B. E.
