Description:
The Star and Conception Bay Journal published local, domestic and foreign news, legislative and court proceedings, shipping and fishing news, public notices, advertisements, poetry, correspondence and editorials. The Star was Protestant and Conservative in policy, siding with the merchant class and opposing the Liberal Party. Burton moved to St. John's in 1840 and started the Star and Newfoundland Advocate.

Wednesday, February 26, 1834	Yesterday, at 7 in the morning, was launched from the beach at Clown's Cove, near this town, a fine schooner name Cordelia. She is intended for the Seal fishery, is the property of Messrs. T. CHANCEY & CO. of this town, and was built by Mr. THOMAS PARSONS, Clown's Cove - her register is 91 tons.
	Married on Wednesday last by the Rev. J.G. Hennigar, Wesleyan Missionary, Mr. JOSEPH PARSONS, of this town, to Miss CATHERINE PARSONS, of Clown's Cove.
	Married last evening, by the same, Mr. FOX, mason, to Miss JULIA LILLY, both of this town.
	Died on Sunday the 16th inst., Mr. JOHN DEAN, aged 56 years.

	Died on Monday last, Mr. WILLIAM JOYCE, a native of Wynburn, Dorset, very much regretted, many years an Agent at Bay Roberts, for the firm of Mess. Gosses, Pack & Fryer of this place, aged 47 years.

Wednesday, May 14, 1834	Died at St. John's, on the 7th inst., after a long and severe illness, WILLIAM HAYWARD, Esq., Barrister of the Supreme Court, aged 47 years. He has left a large family to deplore his loss.
Wednesday, May 21, 1834	Married at Barbadoes, on the 21st January, by the Rev. Mr. Parker, Mr. ANDREW G. DRINAN, Editor of the Port of Spain Gazette, Trinidad, to Mrs. RYAN, Editress of the Globe, Barbadoes, and widow of the late Mr. MICHAEL RYAN.
	Married at Teignmouth, on the 9th April, JAMES PRING, Esq., of the firm Pring and Adam, Merchants, Lisbon, to ANN, eldest daughter of Mr. MATTHEW WARREN, Merchant, of the former place.
	On Monday last, an Inquest was held before J. Stark, Esq. Coroner, to enquire into the case of the death of a man named JOHN CRASE, who was found dead, on the land-wash, near the wharf of Messrs. Best and Waterman, Merchants of this place, on the previous morning. It appeared that the deceased had come from St. John's, in Doyle's passage boat, on Saturday night last; he was very troublesome while crossing the Bay, and his conduct strange; he, however, landed safely from the boat at about half past nine, and was seen walking in the lower street of the town about an hour after. - The jury, after a patient investigation, brought in a verdict of, FOUND DROWNED. The deceased was a witness in the case of the murder on the Labrador coast, where he had lived, in the employ of Mr. Bird, for a period of nearly twenty years, and was worth some money. He came from st. John's to this place, with the intention of going to Poole in the Hope, which sailed on Sunday last; the papers of that Vessel having, however, been made out he could not procure a passage in her.

Wednesday, June 4, 1834	Married on Wednesday last, by the Rev. J. Pickavant, Wesleyan Missionary, MARIA ANN, eldest daughter of Mr. W.W. BEMISTER, Merchant of this town, to the Rev. RICHARD SHEPHERD, Wesleyan Missionary. The happy couple will leave shortly for New Brunswick, to a station in which country the Rev. gentleman has been appointed.
	Deserted from the Service of the Subscribers, on the 26th ult., a Man named JAMES CLARK, said to be a native of Ilminster, Somersetshire, and aged 27 or 28 years; he is about 5 feet 4 inches high, dark hair and complexion, slightly marked with small pox, and is by trade a Mason or Bricklayer. 	Married at Philadelphia, at Christ Church, by the Right Rev. Bishop White, PEIRCE BUTLER, Esq., of that city, to Miss FRANCES ANN KEMBLE, daughter of Chas. Kemble, Esq., of Bloomsbury, London.
	Died at Hr. Grace yesterday, after a short illness, CATHERINE KEEF, aged 21 years. Her funeral will take place tomorrow from the residence of Mr. James Fox.
Wednesday, July 23, 1834	Died, Thursday last, Mr. WILLIAM BUTT, aged 73 years.
	Died at Mount Stewart, P.E. Island, on the 22nd June, JOHN STEWART, of Mount Stewart, Esq., in the 75th year of his age. At the time of his death, Mr. Stewart held the situations of the Marshall of the Court of Vice Admiralty at St. John's, Nfld. and collector of his Majesty's quick rents of this island. P.E. Wednesday, August 13, 1834	Died at Poole, on the 7th July, JOHN GOSSE, Esq., aged 70 years, of the firm Gosse, Pack & Fryer of this town.
	Died at Toronto on the 31st ult. in the 28th year of his age, of a disease of the lungs resulting from inflammation, Rev. WM. BOULTON, B.A., ofe of the classical masters of the United Church College. The deceased was the youngest brother of the present Chief Justice of Nfld. Kingston U.C. Gazette, June 14th.
Wednesday, August 22, 1834	Died on the 26th inst., MELVINA MOLLOY, aged 6 years and on the following morning, FRANCIS MOLLOY, aged 6 months. Both are the children of P.E. Molloy, Esq., Surgeon, of this town. On the late melancholy occasion, a worthy Catholic priest performed the last offices to mortality within the burying ground of the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. This is a proof that a tolerant and a Christian like spirit pervades our little community.

	Married at St. John's on the 5th inst., by the Right Rev. Dr. Fleming, Mr. MICHAEL KAVANAGH, to MARGARET, eldest daughter of Michael MEEHAN, of that town.
	Died on Wednesday last, ROBERT AYLES PIKE, aged 18 months, youngest son of Mr. John Pike of this town.

	Died at Ochre Pit Cove on Friday last, ELIZABETH, widow of the late John EDGECOMBE, of that place, aged 68.
	Died at Western Bay on Sunday last, WILLIAM WHITEWAY, aged 98, a native of the west of England, and a resident of that place upwards of 78 years.

Wednesday, November 5, 1834	Melancholy accident at sea in a gale of wind on the 29th September last. Fell from the yard arm of the brig Comet, cole master, on his voyage from Liverpool bound to Brigus, Mr. WILLIAM BRADBURY, aged 26 years, second son of Mr. William Garland Bradbury, of this town. 	Married at St. John's, the 25th ult, by the Rev. F.H. Carrington, Mr. PHILLIP DODD of Sydney, C.B., to SUSANNA WESTON, second daughter of the late Mr. Alexander HAIRE, of that town.
	Died at St. John's, on the 21st ult., after a short illness, Mr. WILLIAM ZIEGAR SAUNDERS, a fine young lad, aged 16 years and 8 months, eldest son of Lieut. Saunders. R.B.C.
Wednesday, November 12, 1834	We Regret to state that a melancholy accident happened on the night of Sunday week, about the schooner Bellisle, belonging to this port. GEORGE PYNN, master, on her return from the Labrador, being a little inside the Gull Island and the wind blowing very hard, a tremendous sea struck the vessel amidships and washed the unfortunate master overboard, without the possibility of the crew rendering him the slightest assistance. Capt. Pynn was a young man, about 26 years of age and bore a most excellent character. He has left a distressed young widow and four helpless children to mourn the unhappy event. The Ledger, Nov. 7.

Wednesday, March 11, 1835	Died on Monday last, aged 70 years, Mrs. ELIZABETH NURSE, a native of Hampshire, England, but for 50 years a respectable inhabitant of this town. She was a member of the Congregational Chapel. Newfoundlander, March 5.
Wednesday, April 8, 1835	Married on Thursday last, by the Rev. J.G. Hennigar, Wesleyan Missionary, Mr. JOHN PARSONS, of Hr. Grace, to RACHEL, fourth daughter of Mr. Jonathan PARSONS, of Freshwater.
Wednesday, May 20, 1835	Married at Hr. Grace on Thursday last, by the Rev. J. Burt and afterwards by Rev. C. Dalton, Capt. EDWARD WILLIAMS, of the brig Experiment, to Miss CATHERINE MOLLOY, sister to Dr. Molloy of this town. The lovely bride was given away by James Bayly, Esq., of H.M. Customs.
	Died at Hr. Grace on Wednesday last, after 18 years of suffering in the most deplorable state of lunacy, Mr. EDWARD FREDERICK PIKE, aged 36, son of the late Capt. Thomas Pike of this town, and grandson to the late Surrogate Garland of Hr. Grace.
Wednesday, June 10, 1835	Died April 10, at Teignmouth, Devon, Mr. WILLIAM PINSENT, merchant, late of Port de Grave, Nfld., aged 78.
	Died on the 12th of May, on board the colonial Brig, Maria, on his passage from hence to Halifax, Lieut. HOLLINGWORTH, R.A., His remains were conveyed to Halifax where they were interred with military honor on the 17th. The Gazette.

Wednesday, January 3, 1838	The session of the Supreme Court closed on Saturday last, on Friday, a named GEORGE AVERY, against whom a true bill was found by the Grand Jury for murder. He having, at Bonavista, fired a gun amongst a group of children, one of whom was thereby killed, and was put upon his trial and was found guilty of manslaughter. Wednesday, May 23, 1838	Inquest - An inquisition was taken at Carbonear on Saturday last, before John Stark, Esq., Coroner, on a view of the body of GEORGE BISHOP, a seaman belonging to the brig Triumbirule, Capt. Green. After a lengthened inquiry, the jury returned a verdict "found drowned". The Coroner in approving of the verdict took occasion to warn all the shipmates of the deceased against that extreme species of drunkenness, in which the deceased had indulged, and which ultimately led to his death, by his jumping off the wharf and attempting to swim on board. The Coroner issued his warrant for the burial of the deceased in St. James' Churchyard.

Mr. Blaikie was a native of Roxburghshire, in Scotland, but has long been a resident of this country. Wednesday, September 5, 1838	A Coroner's inquest was held at the Court House in this town, Monday last, before John Stark, Esq., and a most respectable jury of which Mr. James R. Knight was elected foreman, to inquire into the cause of the death of EDWARD DALTON, a male infant of about 12 months old. It appeared in evidence that the child (whose mother has for some time past been confined in Gaol under sentence) had long been lingering with a dysenteric affliction from which it completely recovered, it was then seized with convulsions consequent upon teething, from which it died. Dr. Sterling had regularly attended the deceased and Mr. Currie, the gaoler, as well as Mrs. Currie had been unremitting in their attendance and kindness administering to it , bread and milk, with wine, and every other comfort that was required. Verdict - "died a natural death by the visitation of God."

Wednesday, December 19, 1838	Extract from the calendar of the autumn turn of the Northern Circuit court: - at Twillingate: GILES NORROMORE - taking salmon out of a net - fined 20 shillings; at Greenspond: JAMES LASH - marrying without a license - fined 5 pounds and to be imprisoned til the fine be paid; at Greenspond: MOSES CHEATER (?) - larceny - imprisonment at Trinity for 3 months and to be kept at hard labor until his arrival at Trinity; at Trinity: JOHN COX - malicious mischief - killing a horse - verdict: not guilty; at Trinity: JAMES BROWN - receiving stolen goods - to be confined in Her Majesty's Gaol in Trinity for 3 calendar months; at Harbor Grace: PATRICK POWER - perjury - to be imprisoned in Her Majesty's Gaol in Hr. Grace for 6 calendar months and pay a fine of 10 pounds.
	Her Majesty's solicitor general filed information against the following persons for selling liquor without a license, to which they were severally pleaded guilty and judgment passed thus - each shall pay a fine of 5 pounds sterling and a further sum of 2 pounds 10 shillings on amount of costs viz: Mr. WILLIAM BROWN & Mr. HENRY HEARDER at Carbonear; Mr. ARTHUR THOMEY at Mosquito; Mr. THOMAS BUTLER at Port de Grave; Mr. FRANCIS LYNCH & Mr. ROGER HANRAHAN of Hr. Grace, about 25 others such informations will come on for trial next term.

Wednesday, July 3, 1839	Died on Saturday, the 29th ulto, after a few days of painful suffering, aged 43 years, Mr. JAMES HATCHER, for many years a trustee and diligent postman of this town. His funeral took place on Monday last. The deceased has left a widow and eleven children to lament his loss.

Wednesday, October 23, 1839	Murder at Carbonear - Coroner's Inquest - On Saturday last, an inquisition was taken at Carbonear before John Stark, Esq., Coroner, on view of the body of DENIS CALLAGHAN, fisherman and laborer, then and there lying dead. It appeared in evidence that one THOMAS NOWLAN, a fisherman, had returned to his tilt at Carbonear, from Hr. Grace, on Wednesday evening, 16th inst., and that about a quarter of an hour afterwards, the deceased Denis Callaghan was seen to enter Thomas Nowlan's tilt, situated only a few yards from the house of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Cullinna.. A great noise and loud talking and screeching from Nowlan's wife and the deceased was soon afterwards heard, and it being supposed that both Nowlan's wife and Callaghan had been murdered. Assistance was procured, the door of the house was ultimately unlocked by Nowlan himself, when the deceased Callaghan was found severely wounded in the head, lying upon a bench near the fire, almost speechless, his body covered with blood with several mortal wounds in the head and a great deal of blood on the bench and the floor. He was carried to his own house and expired about ten o'clock the same night. The body presented a sad spectacle; there were several mortal wounds and one of a circular shape, as it had been inflicted with the muzzle of a gun. The head was neatly dissected by Dr. Walsh, in the presence of the Coroner and Jury. The investigation continued for two days, many witnesses were examined and on Saturday, a highly respectable jury of 17 in number, and of which Mr. JOHN FOOTE was elected foreman, unanimously returned a verdict of willful murder against Thomas Nowlan. The Coroner instantly issued his warrant for the apprehension of the murderer, who was still supposed to be lurking in the neighborhood of his own dwelling, situated on the margin of the woods. Mr. Power, the stipendiary magistrate, Carbonear, and his constables have been, and continue to be on lookout, in the endeavors to discover the felon, and it is hoped he will be apprehended. There is little doubt that the murderer had but too good cause to be jealous of the deceased, and it was to this jealousy the murder is attributed.
	Died on Monday last, after a few hours illness, aged 38 years, Mr. WILLIAM DIXON, leaving a wife and two young children. His funeral will take place this afternoon.

Wednesday, August 19, 1840	Birth in this town on Saturday last, the 15th inst., the Lady of JOHN STARK, Esq., Chief Clerk and Registrar, Northern Circuit Court, J.P., of a son.
	Coroner's Inquest - On Thursday the 6th inst. at Blowmedown, near Salmon Cove, an inquest was taken before John Stark, Esq., Coroner, on view of the body of WILLIAM PENNY, a young man, 24 years of age, son of Clement Penny. On the previous evening, shortly before dark, the deceased, in company with one of his brothers, and EDWARD BALDWIN, were returning from the jigging ground in the punt, under sail. The deceased was in the bow of the boat and had an oar in his hand with which (out of his tricks, as described by the witnesses) he was endeavoring to counteract the steerage of Edward Baldwin, who was sculling - a sudden flow of wind reached the boat - the oar of the deceased caught in the water when he was tossed overboard and before the two lads could take in the sail and return to the spot, he sank to rise no more. Verdict - Accidentally Drowned. No blame whatever attaches to the two young lads that were in the punt.
Wednesday, August 26, 1840	Died at Poole, on the 7th June, Mrs. OLIVIA PACK, widow of the late Stephen Pack, Esq., aged 72 years, and the beloved mother of Robert Pack, Esq., J.P., of Carbonear.
	Died at West Lulworth, in the county of Dorset, England, on the 26th of June, JOHN BEATON, Esq., aged 75 years. This gentleman was father of the lady of the Rector of this town, and also of the lady of the Rev. Mr. Fitzgerald of Bonavista.
Wednesday, September 2, 1840	The Rev. JAMES WOOD, the senior Minister of the Wesleyan Methodist connection, died on the 17th June. He was in his 39th year.
