30 July 1872NewsYesterday morning the British schooner "Sunbeam" from Cadiz, arrived here, having on board the shipwrecked crew of the "Frank Lovett." That vessel, which was loaded with a cargo of pig iron and bound from Antwerp to Philadelphia, sprung a leak and sunk in lat. 46.30, long. 41.32, on the 21st inst. Captain, wife and children, with the remainder of the crew, were out in an open boat of a small size for a considerable time. We learn that the Captain of the "Sunbeam" showed them every kindness.

NewsOn Friday evening last, while the boat "Roxanna," Nathaniel Barrett, Master, was proceeding to Bishops Cove, with fishery supplies from the stores of Messrs. RIDLEY & SONS, a fatal accident took place. Whilst passing the bar, a young man named George SMITH, stunned himself by an abdominal fall, occasioned by leaping from the large boat to the small one in tow; and was subsequently drowned. Some suppose that he was instantaneously killed by the accident. We hope that every assistance will be rendered to the "Roxana" in finding the body.

NewsIn reference to a previous notice of the fire which occurred at the residence of Capt. Jas. KEEFE, we are glad to ascertain, after careful investigation, that the fire did not arise from a defective state of the chimney. We have it positively from interested parties that is was a spark from the stove pipe which caused the ignition. Rumour had it the reverse, consequently our impressions were with it.
27 Aug 1872NewsMissing: On Saturday forenoon, the 17th inst., Stephen FOLEY, an elderly person, who had been in the employ of Messrs. RIDLEY & SONS, for nearly 10 years, abruptly left his work (being at the time employed caulking.) He has not yet returned to his family who regret his absence. It appears that he has for some time been labouring under a state of despondency. On the Sabbath, the day after his disappearance, he called at a residence in the neighborhood of Carbonear, -- but being unknown, and the story of his absence not having reached there, he was, of course, at liberty to roam. Where the poor man has wandered to, is a question which several search expeditions have failed to ascertain. We hope he will soon turn up.

NoticeMr. D.S. GERRY, agent for Wilson's Theatrical Company, is in town making arrangements fro that celebrated company of Brilliant Professional Artists.

NewsIt is indeed with pleasure we observe our revered and philanthropic friend, John MUNN, Esq., again amongst us. His absence during the greater part of the summer has truly been regretted. The needful, who ever find in him that generosity which marks the donor with respect, have greatly missed his presence in this community. However, he is with us again, "hale and hearty." We hope he will long be spared to administer, as has ever been his wont, to the wants of the necessitous. Dr. Wm. M. ALLAN arrived here per same conveyance, accompanied by two of the Misses ALLAN. It is very pleasing to have old friends amongst us once more.

NewsOn Tuesday, the 3rd inst., an inquest was holden at the penitentiary, or Gaol, in this city, before Dr. RENOUF, Acting Coroner for our Sovereign Lady, Victoria, for the central district, on the body of Michael CAREW a prisoner who died the previous evening. The verdict of the Jury was in accordance with the facts -- "died by the visitation of God." This unfortunate man was convicted of the wilful murder of his wife, in Kings Cove, about nine years ago; but in consequence of being considered insane at the time the sentence of death was not passed on him, therefore he became an inmate of the Lunatic Asylum, and latterly of the Penitentiary, during her Majesty's pleasure. He was in good health until he observed the erection of the Gallows in the Gaol yeard, two months ago, when his conscience troubled him severely; he began to refuse to eat his diet, and gradually pined away -- Courier, Sept 7

NewsLying at the wharf of Messrs. MARCH & SONS is a pretty little three masted yacht, built by Mr. Aaron TILLEY of Shoal Harbor, for the Mission Work in connection with the Congregational Chapel in this town. The little craft, we learn, is intended for the conveyance of Mr. HARRINGTON, the missionary, into the different harbors in Trinity Bay. She appears to be well adapted for the work, is a neat model and we have no doubt will be a fast sailer.

NewsA Sad Tragedy. A letter was received recently in this city by one of the family from Captain D. MAHONEY, commander of the ship, "Lizzie Fennell"…the letter is dated at "Guanape Island, Peru, South America, Sept, 21, 1872." Captain MAHONEYwrites under a terrible state of mind,...The vessel arrived at Guanape on the 31st of August, and between 12 and 1 o'clock Mrs. MAHONEY and her child "died" it says, Mrs. MAHONEY had been laboring under a peculiar female affliction, which at intervals caused temporary aberration of the mind...at the time mentioned, Mrs. MAHONEY killed her child and committed suicide...The captain declares "it is his intention to bring the remains home with him, as he could never think of leaving them on these islands." -- St. John Globe -- (edited for brevity)
