Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser

1881 - 1889

The HARBOR GRACE STANDARD, earliest issue located: Dec. 7, 1859 (v. 1, no. 4)and it ceased publication: 1936. Frequency of publication was weekly, Dec. 7, 1859-Mar. 3, 1888; semiweekly, Mar. 10, 1888-1894 and weekly, 1894-1936?

The paper had several titles: Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Dec. 7, 1859-Dec.25, 1867; Harbor Grace Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Mar.1, 1871-Mar. 3, 1888; Harbor Grace Standard, Mar. 10, 1888-1936.

The Harbor Grace Standard published news of the Conception Bay Region, domestic and foreign news, legislative proceedings, extracts from St. John's papers, shipping and fishing news, poetry, and advertisements. The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

To the Honorable Ambrose Shea and Capt. Charles Dawe: Gentlemen:-- We, the undersigned Electors of the District of Harbor Grace, encouraged by the many evidences of the success attending your past Legislative career, and realizing the necessity that exists, at this critical period in the country's history, for the exercise of prudence and discretion in the election of a Legislature for the management of its affairs, earnestly request that you will again allow yourselves to be put in nomination as our Representatives in the next General Assembly. [Transcriber's notes: The above letter was edited for brevity. The names have been sorted by surname and are not in the same order as appeared in the newspaper.].
November 25, 1882(Death)Died, at Spaniards Bay, on the 11th inst., after a long illness, borne with Christian resignation to the Divine Will, Mary, beloved daughter of Mr. John LYNCH, aged 27 years. Seldom in youth or old age could be found more perfect reconciliation to the Will of God during sickness than in the case of the lamented deceased; seldom are the ills of life borne with such fortitude and patience, and seldom indeed do we find temporal affairs so little regarded at the above age, as they were by her whose death is announced to-day. Unshaken confidence in Him who holds life and death in His hands smoothed the pillow at her dying hour, whilst a well spent life brought hope and consolation around the couch of death and gently closed the last scene of her mortal existence. Her remains now rest beside the chapel, the Altar of which she so often tastefully decorated; and still nearer the humble school-room wherein she did her duty so well. Could that voice silent in death be heard when the funeral services conducted by the Rev. R.M. WALKER were over, we feel assured she would say: "Go home, dear parents, and shed no tear, No sudden death has brought me here, Trust in the Lord your friend to be, Remember Peter and follow me."

NewsThe Sailing Sealing Fleet - We publish elsewhere a list of the sailing vessels fitted out this spring from this port for the seal fishery. This fleet has unfortunately so dwindled away that this year it numbers no more than five vessels. Two others belonging to Messrs. John MUNN & Co. - the Anastatia, Capt. P. NewsThe shore fishery, we observe from despatches from several places lately appearing in our city exchanges, is beginning to show some sign of improvement. The Times, of Wednesday had a telegram in it dated Trinity, June 29, to the effect that there is a good sign of fish all along the shore now. Traps are doing fair, also the hook and line men. It is very large fish they get and there are large quantities to be seen on the bottom. No doubt there will be a fair catch. A telegram from King's Cove states that the fishery is improving; nearly all the boats with hook and line averaged three quintals on Tuesday, and several trap skiffs loaded. Plenty of Caplin in the neighbourhood of the fishing grounds. At the Bay of Islands, also, on June 26, fish was appearing in fair quantity. The last fishery news brought by the steamer Plover,is of the most cheerful character! In nearly all the ports visited, the boats and traps are doing well. Late last week, fish schooled close to the shore, along the coast from Cape St. Francis inward toward Bauline, Portugal Cove, & Broad Cove, and traps secured about five quintals each, and boats and trawls from one and a half to two quintals each. On Saturday, at Quidi Vidi, SNOW'S trap secured ten and SHIFFINGTONS five Quintals. A boat belonging to MCCARTHY, with two men, caught four quintals with hook and line.

ConservationSome of our Isaac WALTONs have been trying their skill with the rod and have succeeded in catching some fine trout weighing from 1 to 3 lbs. each. Capt. FANE, who has been spending a few weeks up Grand River enjoying the good fishing that is to be had there, was lately visited by some of his friends from on board the Northampton. That ship called in at Codroy on the 2nd. inst., and having landed one or two officers, proceeded to St. George's Bay, returning for them again on the 5th. The Admiral himself was too ill to venture up the river. In Consequence of so much dry weather as there has been, the rivers are very low, and, therefore, Capt. FANE, who last year caught three barrels of salmon, has not been very successful.

CorrectionMr. William HOLDEN of Harbor Main, desires us to contradict the report that he owned that house at Holyrood, burned on the 11th. Inst., and whose destruction was reported in this journal on the day mentioned. Mr. HOLDEN says that he has had nothing to do with the house since the time when its late tenant, Mr. GAFF, commenced to reside in it. Mr. HOLDEN seems to think that our correspondent wished to insinuate some wrong doing on his part, but we did not so understand the correspondent's word. - Mercury.

Invitation[Since the beginning of this col'm is not shown, and in view of the fact that after the names listed below, the next article is titled "Reply:" and begins: 'To the free and Independent Electors of the District of St. Barbe:' but is cut off before we can see the signiture, I suppose it to be the names of people , who are inviting a person to be The Candidate for St. Barbe in the upcoming election. This might be an incorrect assumption on my part as it would seem that the names listed are more commonly associated with Conception Bay rather than with the Saint Barbe area of the province. The following is the paragaph, the top of which is missing: (george white)] --- our undivided support; and it will be useless for the Government to send any other person to contest the Elections against you, knowing as we do the general feelings of the district towards you. Paradise![The beginning of the following col'm is not copied. I am typing it from the beginning of the copy which I have. Gw.} … dogs, sprung from domestic ones have increased greatly within the past few years, and these hunt the country in packs, so that it is impossible for the settlers to raise sheep...... Captain KENNEDY, as a magistrate, authorized one settler to shoot those 'wolfish curs' which had baffled his attempts at sheep raising, and he bagged 92 in a short time and he was still having "excellent sport" when Captain KENNEDY left. The Newfoundland fisheries, Captain KENNEDY believes. will always "hold their own against those of all the rest of the world." Where an estuary has been illegally barred in by nets, herrings have died of suffocation or starvation, until the bottom was covered to a depth of sixteen feet with their dead bodies. The rivers and streams are full of game fish, like salmon and trout.... The administration of Justice must be of a rather occasional and uncertain order, as, wherever Captain KENEDDY landed, he, as magistrate, had to institute a court and the taking of evidence was now and again interrupted by the taking of a fish, for, of course, judical proceedings were not allowed to spoil sport. Several of Captain KENNEDY's statements are, it will be observed, a little over drawn!

NewsThe Fatal Shooting Accident at the Northward. The following additional particulars of the fatal shooting accident, briefly referred to in the last issue, are given by The Telegram. It seems that the name of the poor fellow who met his death so suddenly, is Mr. George POWELL, and of his companion who was wounded, is Charles FANCY. Both belong to Change Islands, near Fogo. The party who fired the fatal shot is named Robert HODDER, a mail carrier and a resident of Dog Bay, which is about twenty miles from Change Islands, and he was accompanied by another man, also named HODDER. The occurence took place at a place named Farewell, midway between Change Islands and Dog Bay, on the open barrens, at twilight. All four were deer stalking. The two HODDERS mistook POWELL and FANCY, in the semi-darkness, for deer, and they waited until the objects had got well within range when Robert HODDER discharged his piece, which was loaded with "quarter" or SSG shot. One of the slugs penetrated POWELL's breast, producing death almost instantly. [The story continues, but the copy ends here. gw.]

He leaves a wife and one child to mourn their sad loss. Dear Nath is gone to be at rest, With him he learned to love the best. He loved Him on this earth below, He wished to leave this vale of woe. He's gone to be where Angels are, In that dear land so bright and fair. He's with his loving Savior now, and lowly at His feet he'll bow. Oh could we once more see his form! In that blest land that knows no storm. Oh could we see him smiling there, In that dear home so free from care. There's not a tear in his eye now; There's not a frown upon his brow, But he is calm and light and fair, He'll be forever happy there. He'll sing the praise of him who died, and who, for us was crucified. Oh may I too myself prepare, That when I die I'll meet him there. Dear Savior, grant to me the grace, And for me too, prepare a place. Then take me to thy throne above, Where I may always sing thy love. Then may we all prepare today, and to our God and Father pray, That he would grant us when we die, to Meet dear Nath above the sky.

NewsThe SS Plover got back from Labrador this morning. A telegram from Captain DELANEY, received by Messrs. Bowring Brothers about noon, announces the boats arrival at Bay Roberts, after landing a considerable number of shipwrecked people at Carbonear. The Captain puts the whole number of his passengers at 150, and says he will proceed to Cupids this evening,. We may expect The Plover here sometime during the night.

NewsThe Dundce Sealing and Whaling Company's steamer Resolute, Captain A. JACKMAN, arrived here last night. She has got four black and two hundred white whales, which will yield about 47 tons of oil. During the voyage, a man named DAVIDSON, a native of Scotland, died and was buried far North.

NewsThe run of codfish at the Lofoden Island, Norway, is said to be a marvellous sight. Billions assemble and form a mountainous shoal 120 to 180 feet high. The season lasts two months, and on a propitious day, 7000 boats bring in 2,000,000 codfish!
14 Nov 1885NewsThe mission of the Plover, on her errand of mercy to the Labrador, was, we are glad to note, from the MERCURY, a complete success. Being a fast boat, and well managed, she reached the scene of the shipwrecks almost as soon as The Lady Glover, and she met The Mastiff on her way to Grady. As we anticipated, the instructions given to Captain DELANEY, enabled him to relieve the most necessitous cases among the resident population of Labrador, and to replace the stores of those who had parted with their winter supplies for the relief of the shipwrecked people. The families on Spotted Island, to whose neccessitous condition we referred to on a former occasion, were relieved, we are glad to say, by Captain DELANEY, so that all anxiety regarding them is at an end. The Plover brought home 140 shipwrecked people. Thus the work of rescuing the distressed and relieving the destitute has been efficently performed. The arrangements of the Government for this purpose were at once humane and judicious.

FisheryThere can be no doubt that the recent loss of vessels, by the storm at Labrador, will be attended with serious results when next years operations begin. To convey the same number of people there as formerly will be difficult, if not impossible, because the necessary amount of shipping cannot be obtained. If an attempt should be made to increase the over crowding, the sufferings of the poor people will be increased in the same proportion. The same storm which destroyed the vessels, have, in a vast number of the cases, levelled the sod huts, so that even the wretched shelter thus formerly obtained, will not now be available. The first step will be to erect these huts, and, while that operation is going on, the poor women and children will have the cold damp ground for their beds, and a Labrador sky for their canopy. The suituation altogether looks very serious. To meet the immediate impending difficulties, surely our Legislature could make some temporary arrangements for conveying at least a number of women and children - if they must go - to Labrador by the sealing steamers that will then be idle. It would be a work of mercy, and before another year elapsed, many of the lost vessels would be replaced.
