Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser

1870 - 1879

The HARBOR GRACE STANDARD, earliest issue located: Dec. 7, 1859 (v. 1, no. 4) and it ceased publication: 1936. Frequency of publication was weekly, Dec. 7, 1859-Mar. 3, 1888; semiweekly, Mar. 10, 1888-1894 and weekly, 1894-1936?

The paper had several titles:

Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Dec. 7, 1859 - Dec.25, 1867;
Harbor Grace Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Mar.1, 1871 - Mar. 3, 1888;
Harbor Grace Standard, Mar. 10, 1888 - 1936.

The Harbor Grace Standard published news of the Conception Bay Region, domestic and foreign news, legislative proceedings, extracts from St. John's papers, shipping and fishing news, poetry, and advertisements. The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

Apr. 3, 1872(Death)In the obituary below, will be found recorded the death of Bridget, the beloved wife of James Fitzgerald, Esq., J.P., Fogo. It is the writer's privilege to be acquainted with Mr. Fitzgerald and family. There was ever a house of kindness and large hearted hospitality, and there the lamented deceased moved with that gentleness which beautified her life and guided her family in the dictates of our common Christianity. In sorrow we look beyond this vale of tears. It makes us feel our spiritual nature and exalts the majesty of the soul. And not all the aspirations of the poets or philosophers whom earth ever beheld, can beat the christian's hope. To the bereaved we can offer no words of ours to soothe in an affliction which they alone can feel, any more than to say that we respectfully tender this imperfect tribute of our regard.

CAHILL was taken into custody and a Coroner's jury investigated the case. After a lengthy deliberation, they, last evening, concluded the examination and brought in a verdict of Wilful Murder Against Richard CAHILL. - Chronical, Dec. 30.

NewsOn Monday next, is Nomination Day for a Candidate for this District, in the room of the Hon. F.B.T. CARTER, resigned. We are assured that the eyes of the whole Island are upon the Electors. This is no ordinary return to the Legislature, but decidedly otherwise. One would suppose that a District, essentially Protestant, would choose as a Representative, one of their own faith; but what do we find? The choice of the constituency has fallen upon the Hon. A. SHEA, - A Roman Catholic! This is the spirit of liberality that we have been inculcating, and will continue to inculcate. The Requisition to the Hon. Gentleman from the Electors, and his reply, we publish in this issue. In all our experiences of replies to similar Requisitions, there has been nothing published in this Island of the same stamp. It has the true Statesman ring in it - not the paltry begging tone of the small place hunter, or the whining key of the peddling politician. We wish the Hon. Gentleman every success in his Canvass!

NewsThe SS Cabot, arrived at Bay Roberts on Tuesday afternoon, the Hon. A. SHEA and P. EMERSON, Esq., passengers. These gentlemen have come round to pay their respects to the Electors of this District. 'Tis thought that there will be no opposition to Mr. SHEA's triumphant return.

DeathOn Monday last, Charlotte, relic of the late Rev. William ELLIS, Weslian Minister, aged 77 years. The deceased will be remembered by many of the old residents of St. John's and the different outports, where her husband had laboured so long and faithfully, in the service of his Master. Since the death of her husband in 1837, she had resided in this town. To the poor, in the earlier days of her widowed life, her kindness will be long remembered with affection. In the latter years, failing health and distressing affliction prevented the active duties amongst the afflicted, but the many messages and kind inquiries after their welfare, testified but too plainly, "that the spirit was willing, but the flesh was weak." Mrs. ELLIS, was, we believe, the last of the Wesleyan Missionaries wives - the pioneers who first planted Wesleyan Methodism in this Island. "Her end was Peace."

LettersFrom Salvage, Bonavista Bay, June 25, 1874: My Dear Sir: I am sorry to have to inform you of an accident that happened with us yesterday. My son, James, lost his beautifully finished house yesterday, by fire, together with nearly all his household furniture, etc. The fire originated by his little boy, a child, he went to the attic loft and struck a match which immediately set fire to some rubbish there,- and at once ran down the attic stairs and into one of the bed rooms, and covered himself in the bed, and could not be found until nearly every part of the house was in flames, after I and some others had to retreat from the fire, and gave the boy up for lost. I made a rush up the stairs and burst into the room where the child had concealed himself, and saved him, at a great risk to my own life, seeing at the time, I had no chance to retreat, but had to throw the child, and myself, from the window. The search occupied so much time, and as nothing else was thought about until he was found, it was then too late to save anything of consequence. It was blowing very hard at the time, and the whole was soon destroyed. The fishery is wretchedly bad, and no prospect of any improvement any where about this bay, that I can hear of. My "young" steamer is getting on first rate. My son James' loss is valued from 200 to 250 lbs. I remain, yours truly, James BURDEN, J.T. BURTON, Esq.

FisheryThe shore fishery is still continuing good, and the thriving little village of Quidi Vidi is reaping a rich harvest from the deep. Mr. John SNOW'S peculiarly constructed trap enclosed, it is said, over 100 quintals in one take the latter part of last week. Mr. MURPHY is also doing a big business, and between them all, we may be safe in saying that 8000 quintals have already been landed, calling for additional flake and stage accomodation, which the enterprising inhabitants are thinking of erecting on the opposite side of the Gut.

NewsAt Bay of Islands, on the 18th December a man named Benjamin BRAKE, a half breed Indian shot another called CARTER, a trader from Nova Scotia, in the thigh, and in a quarter of an hour Carter died. He was the brother of Thomas Carter who carries on business in Bay of Islands. Brake is now in custody of the constable there, Wm. BAGG and will, we presume, be sent on as soon as practicable. No doubt, however, we shall have to take chance for this, for in deference to French Notions of French claims, we are not yet permitted to assert practical juridsdiction on what is called the French short and lawlessnes rules instead British authority on this British soil. BAGG, the constable referred to, we believe, is an "unpaid, unpensioned" volunteer, and why it is that he is charged or has charged himself with the functions of peace officer, we don't well know. It does appear, however, that he renders useful service in this line and that he is the man to hold fast his present prisoner, if needful, with a desperate grip. It is stated that the feeling of the people against BRAKE is so strong that fears are entertained of their taking the law in to their hands.

December 23, 1876NewsA Rare Chance for Chance Cove - It will be remembered that his Excellency Sir John Glover, made his way overland last summer from this place to Repassey and back again, and on his tiresome journey received at the hand of Mrs. MCCARTHY, of Chance Cove, which lay in his route, that true genuine hospitality for which the MACS, both at home and abroad are remarkable. Mrs. MAC may probably have forgotten all but the honor of His Excellency's visit. Not so, however, Sir John, who related a pleasing and grateful recollection of the event to comemorate which, tis understood, he has ordered to be forwarded to his kind hostess a substantial Christmas Box of twenty pounds of best Souchong, twenty pounds white sugar, twenty pounds cheese, and three gallons best Jamaica. There is little doubt that this large auxiliary supply of good cheer to Mrs. MAC'S cupboard for the approaching festive season, will dispel the solitude of the Cove - make more cheerful the comfort and happiness of the MACS, and cause his Excellency's visit to be held in grateful recollection by the good people of Chance Cove. All wayfarers that may chance to pass that Cove during the winter will go on their way rejoicing. - Advocate.
