The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

**Below this obit was the following
DEATH works great changes, and oftentimes under circumstances of severe pain and trial. When it visits a house and takes away one or more from the family circle, the affliction into which that family is plunged far exceeds any earthly consolation. Yet we beg to express our sympathy with the bereaved parents in the terrible loss with which, as will be seen by the obituary to-day, they have been visited. Suffering and lingering under that trying disease, Diphtheria, two beloved daughters at last fall under its way, and within scarcely two days of each other their parents mourn their loss. The circumstances of deep affliction with which these sad events were and are attended, are of two sacred a nature for us to intrude upon, but the writer of this notice having the pleasure of an intimate acquaintance with the bereaved parents and family, and experienced their uniform kindness and hospitality, begs most respectfully to record this imperfect tribute of sympathy with them in their time of trial, and reverence for departed worth.

Though her general occupation was the teaching of the rising generation, still she was always at the service of the old and afflicted, who found in her an adviser and consoler in their cares and their sorrows. In 1853 she left St. John's as Superioress to found the Convent at Harbor Main, thus making a second sacrifice for the good of the people of that locality. Her life in her new mission was the same as in St. John's, and when obliged by age and infirmity to return to her ancient Convent she was to the last week of her life most anxious to be sent again, if possible, to establish another foundation. She was interred (after the Office and High Mass) in the Conventual Cemetary. Her funeral was attended by the Bishop and Clergy, the Religious of the Order of Mercy, the Orphans and School-children, and an immense concourse of people. |

We regret to learn that Charles ELLIS, a young man, son of Mr. Andrew ELLIS, 4th Concession of the Township of London, and brother of Lieutenant George ELLIS of this city, met with a serious accident on Thursday afternoon, while engaged on his father's farm with a team of horses attached to a cultivator. It appears that a shower of rain led him to seek shelter a few yards from his work; he left the horses in harness, believing the shower would cease in a few minutes. He had not left them long, however, before they came restive and started away. Mr. ELLIS, perceiving this, hastened to stop further progress. In attempting to do so he was knocked down and dragged a distance of several hundred yards, one of the teeth of the cultivator entering his abdomen on the right side, causing a fearful gash and severe injury to his intestines. Medical assistance was at once summoned from this city, and Drs. BROWN and NELLIS were soon in attendance. All that medical skill could do was done. We are sorry to hear that faint hopes are entertained of his ultimate recovery. |
