Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser

1888

The HARBOR GRACE STANDARD, earliest issue located: Dec. 7, 1859 (v. 1, no. 4)and it ceased publication: 1936. Frequency of publication was weekly, Dec. 7, 1859-Mar. 3, 1888; semiweekly, Mar. 10, 1888-1894 and weekly, 1894-1936?

The paper had several titles: Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Dec. 7, 1859-Dec.25, 1867; Harbor Grace Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Mar.1, 1871-Mar. 3, 1888; Harbor Grace Standard, Mar. 10, 1888-1936.

The Harbor Grace Standard published news of the Conception Bay Region, domestic and foreign news, legislative proceedings, extracts from St. John's papers, shipping and fishing news, poetry, and advertisements. The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

26 May 1888DeathAn item from Rose Blanch in the MERCURY says that Robert NOTT, the unfortunate missing courier, was found about 500 yards from the place he last left. His head was under water, but his body on dry land; he had probably fainted, and fallen on his back near a small brook or gut, with only about one foot of water in it. Two days after he left Basse Isle, a man living near the spot where he was found, went gunning in the landwash; his dog ran several times to and fro where the poor fellow had fallen; by his bar and gestures, he apparently tried to make his master sensible that there was something at the spot he pointed out, but the man not knowing that the courier was missing, did not go where the dog wished. Constable HAYNES did all he could to find him, and at last succeeded; he deserves much credit for his efforts.

9 June 1888DeathSAD DROWNING ACCIDENT-Mr. Harry BURT of Dominion Point, Exploits River, reports the occurrence of a sade drowning accident, by which Thomas HANDRIGAN of Island Cove, upper part of this district, met his death by drowning at Bishop's Falls, Exploits River in November last. Deceased was in the employ of Messrs. J.J. WINSOR and Co. of Dominion Point Saw Mills and at the time of the accident was engaged with others in freighting winter supplies up the river, when by some means he lost control of the boat in his charge, which, with himself, went over the Falls, and notwithstanding the unceasing efforts made by the men to recover him. (and which were unabated until the river was closed by its winter covering ice) their exertions were futile and so remained until Wednesday, 18th April when the ice breaking up disclosed his body which drifting along side the wharf of Mr. A. BESTON. (Upper Sandy Point) was observed and picked up by him and his sons, seven miles below ehere the casualty occurred. Deceased was a kind husband and loving father and was held in esteem by his fellow workmen.
