Frequency of publication was weekly, Dec. 7, 1859-Mar. 3, 1888; semiweekly, Mar. 10, 1888-1894 and weekly, 1894-1936?The paper had several titles: Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Dec. 7, 1859-Dec.25, 1867; Harbor Grace Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Mar.1, 1871-Mar. 3, 1888; Harbor Grace Standard, Mar. 10, 1888-1936. The Harbor Grace Standard published news of the Conception Bay Region, domestic and foreign news, legislative proceedings, extracts from St. John's papers, shipping and fishing news, poetry, and advertisements. The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

3 Jan 1885 | Announcement | In another column appears the pleasing announcement that the well-known and long-established firm of Messrs. JILLARD Bros. have taken into partnership their nephew, Mr. T.S. GILLARD (who has just returned from an eleven years' sojourn to the United States). Mr. GILLARD will be favorably remembered by many of the business people not only of this town but of other places in the Island: he having been engaged in the above concern for several years previous to 1872. In 1873, he left for the States, and was for the past decade engaged in commercial pursuits in the Great Republic. We feel assured that the wide experience gained by Mr. G. during the above period well qualifies him for the position he now assumes. Need we say that we wish the firm of Messrs. JILLARD Brothers & Co. every success under its new name and management?
3 Jan 1885 | Progress | The March of Progess in "the Oldest Colony" if slow--lamentably slow--is nevertheless sure. A short time ago a new Graving Dock--one of the largest in the world--was formerly opened at St. John's; and during the past week daily mail communication by train was established between the Capital and the most important points in Conception Bay. Speaking of this subject the Mercury remarks: After today (Wednesday) mails will be despatched to Holyrood, Harbor Main, Brigus, Bay Roberts, Spaniard's Bay, Harbor Grace and Carbonear each morning, and will be received each evening. Arrangements for other points along the line of railway will be announced with the regular Winter arrangement. COUGLAN, who has carried the mails to and from Portugal Cove for a period of thirty-nine years, was entitled to a three month's notice of the termination of his contract, but as the arrangement now announced could not be completed until yesterday, it was impossible to give that notice in time. He has, however, consented, in lieu of the notice, to accept a contract to take the mails to and from Portugal Cove twice a week, and between Salmon Cove and Brigus daily, and his two sons have been appointed for four months to take charge of the mails upon the trains. Mr. COUGLAN's faithful and efficient services for so long a period entitle him to the most generous consideration, and we trust that in dealing with him the Government will be exceedingly liberal. Bay Roberts and Spaniard's Bay mails will be delivered to a carrier at the junction of the New Harbor road with the line of railway. Carbonear mails will be carried to and from Harbor Grace by coach.
