Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser

1884

The HARBOR GRACE STANDARD, earliest issue located: Dec. 7, 1859 (v. 1, no. 4) and it ceased publication: 1936. Frequency of publication was weekly, Dec. 7, 1859-Mar. 3, 1888; semiweekly, Mar. 10, 1888-1894 and weekly, 1894-1936?

The paper had several titles: Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Dec. 7, 1859-Dec.25, 1867; Harbor Grace Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Mar.1, 1871-Mar. 3, 1888; Harbor Grace Standard, Mar. 10, 1888-1936.

The Harbor Grace Standard published news of the Conception Bay Region, domestic and foreign news, legislative proceedings, extracts from St. John's papers, shipping and fishing news, poetry, and advertisements. The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

12 July 1884NewsSad Accident--Last evening, between the hours of six and seven, a little boy named Walsh, son of Mr. Patrick WALSH of H.M. Customs, met with a sad and strange death. It appears that the little fellow had climbed upon the fence just behind the Colonial Building, when he fell over the side and was caught by the sleeve of his coat on a row of nails which runs along the top of the fence. The arm working clear, the sleeve, still hitched to the nail, came across his throat and choked him. He was first discovered by a man named SULLIVAN, who instead of taking him immediately down, left him hanging and rushed over to Mr. SALTER's residence, informing that gentleman of the circumstance. He in company with the Rev. H. LEWIS, repaired to the spot instantly. The latter gentleman felt the boy's pulse, and finding that it had ceased to beat a constable was sent for to see the position in which the body was hanging. As soon as the policeman arrived, the body was taken down and into the Colonial building. Doctor HOWLEY was sent for, and arrived shortly after. He examined the body, and pronounced life extinct for some time.

6 Dec 1884Letter to the EditorDear Sir.-- On Saturday night last a most unmanly and altogether unprovoked outrage was perpetrated by a gang of Roman Catholics upon four Protestant families, two named STOCKWOOD, living at Gull Island, and two named TUCKER, living at Burnt Point, about four miles from Lower Island Cove. The Stockwoods are the only Protestant families at Gull Island, and have always lived upon friendly terms with their neighbours. On Friday night some men broke some panes of glass out of Samuel STOCKWOOD’S windows. Upon his return they all went to bed, never thinking of any further trouble, but a little after midnight they were awakened out of their sleep by a tremendous noise, which proceeded from the crashing in of all the windows by great stones, some of which would weigh four or five pounds, and as the room was very narrow, these stones and pieces of broken glass fell upon the bed where STOCKWOOD, his wife and their baby were sleeping. Then at his brother’s house, a few yards off, nearly all the glass and some of the sashes were driven in. In the latter house the husband, wife, four small children and an infant were likewise in bed asleep, as was also old Mr. STOCKWOOD, a man about 80 years of age. The poor women and children were frightened almost to death, and as it was a very cold night they almost perished with the cold afterwards. At the same hour of the night, and in all likelihood by the same blackguards, all the windows in front of Alfred TUCKER’s house and the windows at the back of Thos. TUCKER’s house, Burnt Point, were driven in, sashes and altogether. The Protestants hereabout are in a state of great excitement and indignation, and are hardly to be restrained from taking the law into their own hands.

13 Dec 1884NewsA man by the name of FRENCH, one of the witnesses in the Riverhead trials, was (says Tuesday's Mercury) injured in the Ropewalk on Monday evening last, by one of the employees named CADIGAN throwing a rasp which struck him in the head. CADIGAN was arrested. Wednesday's Telegram states that an inquiry began yesterday was continued today into a charge against one CADIGAN, a reeler at the Ropewalk, of throwing a part of a rasp or file, the sharp handle part of which was broken off, at one FRENCH, as the latter was issuing from the door of that establishment. Complainant (FRENCH) was struck on the head by a corner of the implement, which afflicted an ugly scalp wound. He was present during the proceedings. Several witnesses were examined yesterday and today. It was shown that ten of twelve workmen, amongst whom was the accused, were engaged at their occupations, from twenty to thirty feet from complainant. Some looked up when the missile was thrown; another heard it fall to the floor; another saw the man struck but not the person who threw it. The case is still on. Bail has been refused.
