Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser

1881

The HARBOR GRACE STANDARD, earliest issue located: Dec. 7, 1859 (v. 1, no. 4) and it ceased publication: 1936. Frequency of publication was weekly, Dec. 7, 1859-Mar. 3, 1888; semiweekly, Mar. 10, 1888-1894 and weekly, 1894-1936?

The paper had several titles: Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Dec. 7, 1859-Dec.25, 1867; Harbor Grace Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Mar.1, 1871-Mar. 3, 1888; Harbor Grace Standard, Mar. 10, 1888-1936.

The Harbor Grace Standard published news of the Conception Bay Region, domestic and foreign news, legislative proceedings, extracts from St. John's papers, shipping and fishing news, poetry, and advertisements. The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

NoticeSerious Accident - We regret to learn of the serious accident which on Thursday last befell our old and respected friend, Mr. Peter DWYER. Mr. DWYER, about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, wa sdriving into town from his residence at River Head, and had but proceeded a little way when the nut of one of the shaft-bolts came off, causing the shaft to draggle at the horse's feet. The animal took fright, and started off; the carriage turned over, inflicting serious injury on Mr. DWYER. He was conveyed will all possible speed back to his home; and Dr. W.M. ALLAN was soon in attendance. It was found on examination that Mr. DWYER had suffered a compound dislocation of the ankle-joint. Dr. ALLAN with the assistance of Dr. MARTIN administered chlorofrom and replaced the dislocated part. We are flad to hear that our friend is progessing favorably, and that there is good reason for hope that nor very alarming results will follow.

NoticeFire At Brigus - On the afternoon of Wednesday last, a fire occurred at Brigus by which a dwelling-house, owned and occupied by Miss NOWLAN, was consumed. It was with great difficulty that the fire could be kept from communicating with the telegraph office on the one side, and to the dwelling of Capt. WIlliam WILCOX on the other. As it was, both of these buildings were very much scorched, and but for the strenuous efforts put forth by the citizens would have shared the same fate as the one inwhich the fire originated. Unfortunately, however, a quantity of hay, ots, etc., - the property of the Telegraph Company - that was stored in a stable adjoining dwelling of Miss NOWLAN was entirely consumed. We understand that the origin of the fire is unknown. It is a question with us whether the people of Brigus ought not follow the example of people of Carbonear, and provide themselves with greater appliances for extinguishing fires.
