Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser

1878

The HARBOR GRACE STANDARD, earliest issue located: Dec. 7, 1859 (v. 1, no. 4)and it ceased publication: 1936. Frequency of publication was weekly, Dec. 7, 1859-Mar. 3, 1888; semiweekly, Mar. 10, 1888-1894 and weekly, 1894-1936?

The paper had several titles: Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Dec. 7, 1859-Dec.25, 1867; Harbor Grace Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Mar.1, 1871-Mar. 3, 1888; Harbor Grace Standard, Mar. 10, 1888-1936.

The Harbor Grace Standard published news of the Conception Bay Region, domestic and foreign news, legislative proceedings, extracts from St. John's papers, shipping and fishing news, poetry, and advertisements. The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

NewsWhat we may term a chapter of accidents - one of which, we regret to say, has terminated fatally - has lately happened in this Bay. On Monday last, a party of men belonging to the congregation of the Rev. Mr. Shears of Bay Roberts, were engaged in the laudable task of cutting a load of wood for their pastor. Whilst thus engaged one of their number - a young man of 21 years of age and named William RUSSEL - who was felling a tree at some distance from the rest, was heard to utter a sharp cry. On his companions running to the spot, they found the poor fellow bleeding profusely from a wound in the groin. The sufferer was soon placed on a slide, and hauled with all speed towards Bay Roberts. But, sad to relate, the unfortunate man bled to death on his way out.

NewsTwo fatal accidents (says the North Star) are reported as the result of the gale of Tuesday, the 5th inst. - one in the case of a son of Mr. Jas. NewsFowl Stealing - A young lad, named WALSH, about 11 years of age, was up before his Honour Judge BENNETT on Monday last, charged with having stolen a number of fowls, the property of Mr. Robert LAHEY. He disposed of his "game" by selling it to a number of our influential citizens - one of whom had the choice of giving for one of the "birds" either 1/ or 1/6. He chose the latter alternative, however. The police being informed of the larceny, at once took the matter in hand, and in a short time succeeded in unearthing the juvenile depredator. In consideration of his youthfulness, his punishment was lighter than it otherwise would have been. He was sentenced to be locked up two hours in a cell by himself and to receive six strokes of the birth.

NewsA man belonging to Bryant's Cove, by the name Esau NOSEWORTHY, recently met with a sad and sudden death. He went out in the morning to look at his herring nets, in company with a young lad. Noseworthy landed on an islet off the mainland for the purpose, we understand, of getting a shot or two at the sea-birds. The lad left with the punt after receiving instructions to come back on hearing the report of the gun. A considerable time having elapsed, and the expected signal not having been heard, the lad grew uneasy, and going to an eminence where he could command a view of the island, he saw the deceased gesticulating with his hands, as if imploring assistance. Becoming alarmed, the lad ran back, and, procuring the assistance of some men, returned to the island to find the unfortunate man prostrate on the ground quite dead. A fit is supposed to have been the cause of death. Some years before, it appears, the deceased had suffered sun-stroke whilst cutting wood on Belle Isle.

NewsA serious accident occurred at Otterbury, a few miles below Carbonear, in the early part of last week. A poor man named Henry PARSONS, while on his way down to his fishing boat before it was fully light in the morning, mistook the path leading to the beach, and fell over a cliff, a distance of over 140 feet - the cliff being quite perpendicular, for 90 feet of the fall. One of his sons who was already at the boat heard the noise of his father falling, and thinking it was a stone loosened from the bank, got out of the way. The injured man was soon after removed to his house, when it was found he had sustained flesh wounds and bruises. Doctor NELSON was sent for, and under his skilful treatment and care the unfortunate man is fast recovering. Parsons is 60 years of age, and it is a matter of surprise to all who have seen the place over which he fell, that he was not killed by the fall.
