Harbor Grace Standard & Conception Bay Advertiser

1877

The HARBOR GRACE STANDARD, earliest issue located: Dec. 7, 1859 (v. 1, no. 4)and it ceased publication: 1936. Frequency of publication was weekly, Dec. 7, 1859-Mar. 3, 1888; semiweekly, Mar. 10, 1888-1894 and weekly, 1894-1936?
The paper had several titles: Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Dec. 7, 1859-Dec.25, 1867; Harbor Grace Standard and Conception-Bay Advertiser, Mar.1, 1871-Mar. 3, 1888; Harbor Grace Standard, Mar. 10, 1888-1936.
The Harbor Grace Standard published news of the Conception Bay Region, domestic and foreign news, legislative proceedings, extracts from St. John's papers, shipping and fishing news, poetry, and advertisements. The paper strongly opposed Confederation in 1865 but supported it by 1869. In the 1870's the paper did not receive patronage from the Bennett administration and supported Carter and Ambrose Shea, who represented the Harbour Grace district in the House of Assembly. The paper supported the railway and Whiteway's first administration. The Standard took the Protestant side in the aftermath of the 1883 Harbour Grace affray and supported Thorburn in 1885. The Standard was published until 1936 when it folded due to economic reasons.

Mr. UNICUME was of mild and unassuming manners and of a genial and kindly disposition; and the respect which was shown of the occasion of his funeral on Sunday last, amply testified to the esteem in which he was held. The elder comprehended the danger at a glance and gave a terific (sic) screech, which alarmed the eagle and brought the family at once to the rescue. They say, as far as they can judge, that the bird must have measured at least ten feet tip to tip, and would have had no difficulty in lifting the boy....

17 Nov 1877NewsA melancholy and fatal accident happened on Friday night last. Mr. Thos. SHEA, an unmarried man of about sixty years of age, a resident of River Head, left home for town on the afternoon of that day, but did not return at nightfall. His absence, however, caused little anxiety, as he was often in the habit of remaining in town all night. As the next day passed without his making his appearance, alarm was felt and a search instituted, but without success. On Sunday morning, however, Mr. Jarvis's servant-girl observed something floating in the "dock" between the premises of Messrs. Geo.C. RUTHERFORD & Co. and those of Messrs. C.W.ROSS & Co's. which on examination proved to be the body of the unfortunate man. Sad to relate, deceased met his death, it is feared, through his having taken too much spirituous liquor on that Friday night. He had been denied liquor that evening by at least two publicans on the ground that he had already "enough in".

22 Dec 1877NewsWe regret to learn that a telegram was yesterday received by Messrs. MARCH & SONS from Sydney, advising them of the loss of their fine barquentine, the Jane Stewart, on Wednesday last off Cranberry Head, near Sydney, C.B. Worse than all, however, is the reported loss of her master, Captain MITCHELL, and one of her crew. The remainder of the Jane Stewart's crew were rescued by the Arichat West, and taken to Little Glace Bay. We learn that Captain MITCHELL only heard of the loss of his brother by last mail, on his way from the East Indies, and was consequently somewhat reluctant in making the voyage to Sydney, perferring, if possible to make the run home.
