Conception Bay

Lower Island Cove

The following is some information I collected in my recent trip to Nfld.  
There is a small cemetery in Lower Island Cove, Conception Bay which 
is very old -- it is not identified by any name, so no denomination is 
indicated. 


Here lie the mortal remains of Elizabeth Snelgrove, who departed this 
life June 2, 1847, aged 72 years

In memory of Rachael Rogers (I didn't get the dates or age)

To the memory of John Lock, who departed this life January 6, 1828, 
aged 86 years

To the memory of Elizabeth Lock, who departed this life April 2, 1831, 
aged 75 years (this headstone attached to one above)

To the memory of M. Henry Garland, who departed this life 1791, 
age 55 years

In the memory of John Garland, who departed this life March 2, 1835, 
age 54 years

Here lie the mortal remains of William Wiltshire Jr., who departed this 
life humbly assured of acceptance with God through faith in a crucified 
redeemer, Sept. 24, 1848 age 19 years

William Wiltshire, who departed this life Dec. 13, 1854, aged 62 years

Sacred to the memory of Jane Cooper, who departed this life Feb. 28, 
1838 aged 72 years

Erected to the memory of Thomas Cooper, for many years a 
respectable inhabitant of this place, who departed this life the 29th 
Day of December, 1829, in the 80th year of his age.  He was a pattern 
of industry frugality and honesty.  Death's feeble arm shall never 
boast a friend of Christ is slain nor o'er his meaner part or dust a 
lasting power retain.

Sarah Lewis, wife of Philip Lewis who departed this life the 29th Day 
of April 1825 in the 53rd year of her life.

In memory of Mary Lewis who departed this life December 12, 1899 
aged 18 years, 1 Month & 13 Days.

In memory of Mary, wife of Moses Sandy, who departed this life 
July 21st, 1797, aged 46 years

In memory of George Goudy, who was born on the 1st day of march, 
1773  and died on the 16th day of November 1836

In the memory of (illegible) Snelgrove, dates and age illegible - There 
were three letters as the first name which were worn down - I believe 
this is Ann Snelgrove

In the memory of John Louis, who departed this life May 23, 1858 
aged 88 years

In the memory of William Garland, who departed this life June 18, 
1849 aged 25 years

In memory of Elizabeth, the beloved wife of Richard Rankin, 
merchant of this place who died October 12, 1838, aged 36 years

Joseph Heap Rankin, son of Richard & Eliza Rankin died March 27, 
1859  aged 8 years

Sacred to the memory of Joanna, the beloved wife of Joseph Pascoe, 
and youngest daughter of the late William & Ann Whelan of Brigus, 
born August 23, 1839, died October 11, 1871

In memory of John Blundell who departed this life November 28, 
1853 aged 42 years

Philip Le' Shane, for many years a respectable inhabitant of this place, 
who departed this life 14th June, 1830, aged 81 years

This monument is erected by friends to the memory of the deceased 
who were lost in Trinity Bay May 25, 1883:

In loving memory of Joseph Johnson of No. 39, Island Home, 
Lodge L.O.A. drowned at St. John's 7th August 1908, aged 27 years
