Description:
The Bay Roberts Guardian featured local, provincial and foreign news, public notices, personal and social news, proceedings of the legislature, and fishing and shipping news. Under the editorship of C.E. Russell (1877-1937), the paper reflected his involvement in politics. In 1913, the editorials were extremely pro-Morris, supporting the People's party and opposing Coaker. The paper expressed opposition to Confederation at that time. In 1915, more independence for the outports from the influence of St. John's was advocated.
In 1923, Russell was snubbed by the Opposition Party which he had previously supported. The editorial policy of Guardian abruptly changed sides and supported the Liberals under Richard Squires. The paper sided with the Monroe government in 1924 and the editor was appointed Minister of Public Works. In 1926, the editor resigned that office and became a neutral, resigning from politics in 1928. The paper became less political beginning in the late 1920's, focusing on local issues such as the need for breakwaters and traffic control. Still mildly supportive of the government, the editorials ran to political philosophizing, frequently decrying public apathy. The paper had a neutral attitude toward the Commission of Government at first, but by 1937 became extremely critical of its shortcomings. The Guardian supported Confederation in 1948.

Friday, January 7, 1927 The body of Capt. BLACKWOOD and four other members of the Ella M. Rudolph have disaster have been recovered, there remains the bodies of two others which the men of Catalina hope to recover shortly.

Mr. and Mrs. LEWIS DAWE spent New Year's Day in St. John's as guests of Mrs. Dawe's parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Taylor.
Friday, January 14, 1927 Passed peacefully away at the home of her son, Mr. C.E. Russell, J.P., M.H.A., on Jan.7th, MARY A. RUSSELL, widow of the late Charles Russell, at the advanced age of 92 years and 5 months. Deceased was born at Upper Island Cove, the youngest daughter of Joseph Drover and Susannah Barrett. She was one of a family of eight children, five sons and three daughters, all of whom were long lived. December 31, 1926 was the 69th anniversary of her wedding. In 1884, the family moved from Bay Roberts to St. John's, and five years later, 1889, her husband died. Ten years later, she went with her son to Toronto, Ont., and for nine years lived in that city. She returned to Newfoundland in 1908 and has resided in Bay Roberts ever since. Mrs. Russell met with an accident, by falling and injuring her leg, at St. John's about 32 years ago, which incapacitated her to some extent. In July, 1925, she was stricken with a slight stroke of paralysis, from which she never fully recovered. Her daughter, Mrs. J. L. Walker, of Pickering, Ont., who came to visit her about 6 weeks ago, was present when the end came. Mrs. Russell leaves to mourn their loss one son, Mr. C.E. Russell, J.P., M.H.A., and five daughters, Mrs. Stephen Roach, Mrs. Wm. Pike and Mrs. Wm. Dawe of Bay Roberts, Mrs. George D. Corkum, of Manchester, New Hampshire, U.S.A. and Mrs. John L. Walker of Pickering, Ont., Canada, 23 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Funeral took place Jan. 9th to the United Church.
Friday, January 21, 1927 Two young men, PETER, aged 17 years, and RAYMOND HUNT, aged 21 years, residents of Battle Harbour, were drowned whilst crossing the ice at Burnt Point, Simmons Bay, Jan. 10th, they were the sons of Henry Hunt. Both bodies were recovered in seven fathoms of water the following morning and were buried.
Friday, January 28, 1927 Passed away at his home, Beachy Cove, ABRAM KEARLEY, at the ripe old age of 82 years. Left to mourn their loss are one son, Arthur and two daughters, Mrs. John Norman and Mrs. A.J. French, also one brother, Thomas, all residing at Beachy Cove, and one sister, Mrs. Jesse Mercer, of Mercer's Cove. Funeral took place Jan. 16th to the C. of E. cemetery.

The body of THOMAS COATES of Gander Bay, a trapper, was found dead in the woods near that place on January 21st . No particulars have been received.

Married at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, January 25th, Rev. G.S. TEMPLETON, Rector of St. Paul's, Harbour Grace, to GLADYS, only daughter of Mrs. Sophie Oke, O.B.E., and the late W. A. Oke,Esq., Judge of the District Court, Harbour Grace.

Passed peacefully away, January 26th , AUSTIN OKE SHEPPARD, aged 83 years. Late Keeper at Fort Amherst Lighthouse.
Friday, February 4, 1927 Died this morning, after a brief illness, HENRY WRIGHT SNOW, beloved husband of Rachel Snow, aged 58 years and 11 months. Left to mourn are a sorrowing widow, three sons, Lockyer and Harry in Atlantic City, N.J., U.S.A., and Joseph in this town, two daughters, Mrs. Edmund Skiffington and Mrs. J.S. Parsons, both at Somerville, Mass., one brother, Mr. Willis Snow, three sisters, Mrs. Samuel Roach, Coley's Point, Mrs. George Badcock, French's Cove, Mrs. Edward French, Shearstown, also nine grandchildren. Funeral will take place Feb. 6th to the S.A. cemetery.

Died this morning, HANNAH, beloved wife of Timothy PIKE, aged 64 years. She was the daughter of William and Patience Snow, both of whom predeceased her some years ago. Left to mourn are a husband, one daughter, Mrs. Myra Vokey, one brother, Mr. John Snow and one grandson, James Vokey. Funeral takes place Feb. 6th to the United Church Cemetery.
Friday, February 11, 1927 Bareneed notes: We regret to record the passing on Saturday of JOHN STEVENS, of William. He leaves to mourn a sorrowing wife and two daughters, for whom much sympathy is felt.

Married at North River,C.B., February 10th, Miss ALICE DELANEY to Mr. JOHN FLEMING, both of this town.

Newfoundland Weekly, Boston - We were glad to welcome at the office of the Weekly during the past week, Miss NELLIE CORBETT, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Corbett, of Clarke's Beach. Miss Corbett left Newfoundland sixteen years ago and now holds the position of cashier at the Union Street Oyster House, one of the oldest and best known restaurants in Boston being over one hundred years old. Two brothers, Thomas and James have been prospecting in Alaska for over twenty years and have done well there.

Friday, February 25, 1927 Bareneed notes: We regret to record the passing on Feb. 11th of Mrs. THOMAS G. BATTEN, aged 47 years. Left to mourn her sad loss are a husband, two step-sons, and one step-daughter. Funeral took place Feb. 13th to the C. of E. cemetery.

We congratulate Mr. and Mrs. PAUL on the birth of a daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. C. BATTEN on the birth of a son.

Died, Feb. 17th, RITA, darling child of Stephen and Clara KEARLEY, aged 7 weeks.

Died, Feb. 19th, MARGARET, widow of the late Thomas BROWN, aged 72 years. Left to mourn is one son Thomas. Funeral took place Monday to the S.A. cemetery.

The remains of the late PATRICK J. DELANEY, who passed away Saturday last at the General Hospital, St. John's, arrived here by the night's train. Funeral took place Feb. 21st to the R. C. cemetery.
Friday, March 4, 1927 Died at St. John's, March 2nd, SARAH B., aged 69 years, widow of the late Mark PUDDESTER. Left to mourn are three sons, John C., Chesley and Cecil, and one daughter, Miss Annie, at home, one adopted son, Maxwell.

Passed peacefully away at his residence, 49 Freshwater Road, St. John's, in his 81st year, W. J. RICHARDS, former colporteur for the British and Foreign Bible Society and the Book and Tract Society.

Entered into rest at Open Hall, B.B. on Feb. 10th, GEORGE S., son of the late John C. SHEARS, aged 80 years.

Passed peacefully away Feb.23rd, Mrs. JOHN J. FRENCH, at the age of 69 years. Left to mourn her sad loss are two daughters. Funeral took place Feb. 25th from the residence of Mr. Samuel Boone to the C. of C. cemetery, Bareneed.

PATRICK JOSEPH DELANEY, died Feb. 19th in his 70th year. He was the son of the late Joseph Delaney, who with his brothers, Thomas and Mark carried on an extensive fishing business at Holton, Labrador. He leaves to mourn a widow, one daughter, Sister Mary Eulala, of St. Mary's Home, Sydney, N.S., and three sisters Mrs. Walter Brennan, of this town, Mrs. James Peddle, of Spaniard's Bay, and Mrs. A.J. Moore of Bay de Verde. Funeral took place Feb. 21st.
Friday, March 11, 1927 On Wednesday, March 9th, while attending the funeral of his daughter, the late Muriel Mercer, Mr. ISAAC MERCER was taken suddenly ill inside the gate of the C. of E. grounds. He was immediately brought back to his home, where medical aid was summoned, in spite of all that could be done, he died about three hours afterward. Deceased was 59 years of age and had been apparently been in good health..

Mrs. NATHAN FRENCH and two children, Taylor and Harold, left St. John's on Thursday by the S.S. Newfoundland, enroute to Irvine, Scotland, where she will spend several months visiting her mother, Mrs. J. Kearns.

Died at Brigus, C.B., March 7th, after a short illness, ELIZA WELSH, aged 79 years. Left to mourn are one daughter Mrs. James Norman, of Coley's Point, and two grandchildren, Mrs. L.T. Stick, St. John's, and Mr. Raymond Norman of Far Rockaway, N.Y. Funeral took place from her late residence, Wednesday, to the U. C. Cemetery.

Died March 7th, WINIFRED MURIEL, beloved daughter of Naomi and Isaac MERCER, aged 22 years. Funeral took place March 9th to the C. of E. cemetery.
Friday, March 18, 1927 Passed peacefully away at St. John's, March 8th, LUCY, beloved wife of J.H. TAYLOR, and daughter of the late George James and Elizabeth Rowe. Funeral took place Thursday from her late residence 168 Gower Street.

Once again this Dominion is called to mourn the passing of one of her foremost statesmen in the person of Rt. Hon. Sir ROBERT BOND, at the age of 70 years. For some weeks he has lain seriously ill at his home, The Grange, Whitbourne, and there on March 16th, the end peacefully came. His brother, Rev. George Bond, of Halifax, was with him during his last days. Sir Robert Bond began his career as a law student, but before completing his course, he contested the district of Trinity Bay and was elected. This marked the beginning of his great career. The funeral will take place from his late residence at Whitbourne, March 21st. A special train is being sent from St. John's to arrive at Whitbourne in time for the obsequies.

Vancouver Daily Province, March 1 - Capt. R.E. GOSSE, senior member of the Gosse Packing Co. Ltd., and one of the best known men in the cannery business in British Columbia, passed away at his home 1105 Tenth Ave. West, early this morning. Capt. Gosse was born in Spaniard's Bay, Nfld. in 1852, and entered the northern Nfld. and Lab. fisheries at an early age. He engaged in fishing until 1885, at the same time working in the March and April sealings for 15 seasons. For twelve years he was master of his own vessel, which was lost in the Labrador disaster of 1885. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Fred R. Breer, of Cleveland, Mrs. J.F. Strang, of Vancouver, and Mrs. Charles Maltby, of Toronto, and by two sons, Robert C. and Richard J., in whose hands the management of the Gosse Packing Company lies. Funeral services will be held Thursday, from the Wesley United Church and interment will be in the family plot Mountain View Cemetery. - Vancouver Daily Province
Friday, March 25, 1927 We extend our hardy congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. ISAAC H. HOOPER, of 84 Kenduskeag Ave., Bangor, Maine, U.S.A., on the birth of a daughter on March 9th,1927.

Brigus Briefs: The sudden death of Mr. PATRICK JAMES, on March 11th, came as a shock to the community. Mr. James was but 69 years of age, and up to the day of his death had always enjoyed good health. Interment took place in the R.C. cemetery. Left to mourn are a widow and two sons, Clem, at the ice fields, and Gus in the United States.

Brigus Briefs: We take this opportunity of congratulating Miss MOLLIE BRIEN, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Brien, on her successful graduation at the New York Hospital

The community was plunged into grief on Wednesday when it became known that WILFRED GREENLAND, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Greenland of Coley's Point, had passed away suddenly in the early hours of the morning. Within five minutes after it was discovered that he was ill, the vital spark had fled. Funeral takes place today (Friday) from his late residence to the C. of E. cemetery.
Friday, April 1, 1927 Died at Everett, Mass. on Feb. 25th, ELIZABETH, beloved wife of Archibald SHEPPARD, formerly of Harbour Grace, aged 50 years. Mr. Robert J. French of Harbour Grace is a brother.

Passed away at his residence, in this town, March 27th, SAMUEL, beloved husband of Lavinia WHITE, aged 65 years. Deceased was a son of the late Elizabeth and James White, formerly of Dorsetshire, England. For the past 35 years, the late Mr. White has resided in Boston, Mass. Left to mourn their sad loss are a widow, one son, James, now living in Allston, Mass., one brother, John, residing in this town, five grandchildren. Funeral took place March 29th to the C. of E. church.

Died at Sydney, N.S., on March 27th, ELIZABETH, widow of the late Isaac MERCER, aged 70 years. Left to mourn are four sons, Cyril of Sydney, N.S., and Robert of this town, William and Lorenzo in Boston, one sister, Mrs. Susanna Snow, of North River. Funeral takes place from the residence of Mr. Robert Mercer on Sat.

Died at Mercer's Cove, March 28th, DIANA, widow of the late Isaac RUSSELL, aged 77 years. Funeral took place March 30th to the C. of E. cemetery.

Married at St. Thomas's Church, St. John's, March 26th, JESSIE ELIZABETH, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew CARNELL, to CHESLEY ARTHUR, son of Hon. Sir John and Lady CROSBIE.

Miss ANN KANE, aged 85, of St. John's, was found dead near the steps leading up to her home on Nunnery Hill, on Friday night last. It seems that she had attempted to leave the house while the members of her family were attending evening devotions, and was overcome and fell in the place where she was later found.

A boy named GROUCHY, missing from his home for a day, was found drowned at the battery, in the Narrows of St. John's, on Tuesday last.
Friday, April 8, 1927 Passed peacefully away at Grace Hospital, April 1st, ANNIE, aged 53 years, widow of the late William CHARD. Left to mourn are one son and one brother.

Died March 30th, at Port de Grave, wife of Stephen PIERCY, aged 22 years, daughter of Bertha and the late William GIFFORD. Left to mourn are husband, mother, five brothers and two sisters.
Friday, April 15, 1927 Bareneed Notes: We record with sadness the passing of EVELYN, beloved child of Mr. and Mrs. Josiah BRADBURY, at the age of 4 months. Funeral took place Monday.
Friday, April 22, 1927 Death came suddenly on Tuesday last to JAMES J. McGRATH, only a few weeks ago appointed Deputy Minister of Justice. Deceased had been unwell but a few days and his passing came as a shock to his friends. He was in his 66th year and was unmarried. He leaves a mother, one sister, Mrs. Martin Furlong, and one brother, Thomas F. McGrath, the well-known painter, to mourn their loss.
Friday, April 29, 1927 Passed peacefully away at Harbour Grace, April 21st, at her late residence, Harvey Road, MARY STEWART, widow of the late Neil Stewart, aged 76 years.

Died April 19th, after a long illness, GLADYS, beloved wife of John BISHOP, of Trinity Bay, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Holmes, Shearstown, aged 25 years. Left to mourn are the husband, mother, father, one sister, Rosie, also two brothers, Kempton and Thomas. Funeral took place at the C. of E. cemetery, Shearstown, April 21st.

A quiet but very pretty wedding was solemnized at Harvard Street Methodist Church, Cambridge, Mass., April 18th, when Miss MILDRED WHITEWAY, formerly of Harbour Grace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Whiteway, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Mr. LAWRENCE BUSSY, of Cambridge

Died at St. John's, April 25th, DUGALD MUNN. He was born in Hr. Grace, the eldest son of the late Robert S. Munn, of Harbour Grace, aged 64 years. His mother was the daughter of Capt. Azariah Munden, of Brigus. There remains to mourn their sad loss, his widow, son, grandchild and five brothers, three in Nfld. viz. W.A. and Archibald in St. John's, and Robert S. in Hr. Grace, Graham in B.C., and Ronald in England, also five sisters, four in Montreal and one in Florida. Interment took place at Hr. Grace to the Presbyterian cemetery.

Died at St. John's, April 28th, MARY, widow of the late Hon. James S. PITTS.

Died after a brief illness, at Coley's Point, April 29th, ANNIE FLORENCE, beloved daughter of Abram and the late Ethel SQUIRES, aged 17 years. Left to mourn are father, one brother, John, and a large circle of friends.

On Easter Saturday, April 16th, at the Madison Ave. Episcopal Church, New York City, a pretty but quiet wedding took place, the contracting parties being Miss ANNIE M. LODGE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Lodge of St. John's, and CHESLEY M., son of the late Capt. Isaac Mercer and Mrs. N. Andrews, of St. John's. Mrs. Florence Irvine , sister of the groom was bridesmaid, and Mr. M.A. Lodge, brother of the bride was best man. The happy couple will take up their residence in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Friday, May 6, 1927 Died at Shearstown, April 30th, ABRAM DEERING, beloved husband of Elizabeth Deering. Left to mourn are a widow, four sons, Walter, Harvey, Stephen and Harrison, and one daughter, Lillian, all residing at Shearstown.

Passed peacefully away at Champney's, T.B. , Wednesday, a most estimable old lady in the person of MARGARET DEWLING (nee Margaret Batson), at the age of 89 years. She leaves to mourn three sons, one daughter, forty-four grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren, most of whom are in the U.S. and Canada. Constable J. Dewling of Brigus is a son.

Died May 6th, after a short illness, FANNIE, widow of the late Thomas NORMAN, aged 77 years. Left to mourn her loss are five daughters and one son, William, of this town. Funeral takes place May 7th.

Brigus Briefs: We wish to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. HARRY HISCOCK, of Hartford, Conn., on the birth of a son, April 16th.

Mr. ISRAEL MARSHALL, of this town, left by this mornings train, enroute to British Columbia, where he will visit his brothers, Messrs. Richard, James and Leonard Marshall.
Friday, May 13, 1927 A quiet but very pretty wedding was solemnized at the R.C. Church, May 9th, when Miss SADIE WALKER was united in holy bonds of matrimony to Mr. NICHOLAS FOWLER, of this place. The bride was attended by Mrs. Mary Keough and Alice Fowler.

Passed peacefully away at Heart's Delight, May 7th, Capt. E.T. HOBBS, aged 38.

Died at Liverpool, England, May 8th, P.K. MacLEOD, interment at St. John's.

Married at Westmoorland Ave.United Church, Toronto, Canada, April 23rd, Miss EDITH DUNCLIFFE, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Duncliffe of Waubaushene, Ont. , to Rev. W. MAXWELL PARSONS, son of Mrs. May G. and the late E.H. Parsons, formerly of Newfoundland.
Friday, May 20, 1927 Recently, death visited Country Road, removing from it MATTHEW PARSONS, at an advanced age. To the sorrowing relatives we tender sympathy.

Died at Spaniard's Bay, May 16th, PEARL W., daughter of Josiah and Lydia GOSSE, aged 26 years. Left to mourn are father, mother and one sister.

Died May 19th, LEVI, beloved husband of Elizabeth MERCER, aged 64 years. Left to mourn their loss are a widow, one son, John H. in the U.S.A., and one daughter, Mrs. Richard Crane, of this town.
Friday, June 3, 1927 Sydney, N.S. May 26th, AMES PYNN, steel plant worker was killed today in an accident on revolving crane at Blast Furnace dump. He was a native of Chelsea, Trinity Bay, Nfld.

RONALD KING, aged 12 years, of Pushthrough, lost his life by drowning on Wed., according to a message received by the Deputy Minister of Customs, from the Collector at Pushthrough. The fatality was caused by the lad falling over a wharf. No other particulars were received.

EDWARD DWYER, of Bell Island, aged 18 years, a son of Philip Dwyer, an employee of the company, was accidentally struck by car number 4, about 11 a.m. and died at 12 noon, on June 1st. So says a message received by the Inspector-General C.H. Hutchings, K.C., from Acting-Sergeant Shepperd of Bell Island.

A lighted match thrown into an empty gasoline tank was responsible for the death of MELCIN BOYD, aged 13 years, and the serious injury of ALFRED BOYD, aged 16 years, at Tizzard's Harbour, near Twillingate on Monday afternoon.

Passed peacefully away at Upper Island Cove, May 9th, Mrs. ELIZABETH ANN DROVER, relict of the late Joseph Drover, at the age of 76 years. She was laid to rest on the 11th of May. She leaves to mourn four sons and two daughters, thirty-five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also one brother residing at Spaniard's Bay and one sister at Upper Island Cove and one at St. John's.

Married at Shearstown, June 2nd, PEARL, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert SPARKES, to Rev. HARVEY RUSSELL, son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Russell, of this town.

Died at Coley's Point, May 31st,CHARLOTTE, widow of the late, Thomas BOWERING, aged 81 years. Left to mourn are four sons, Richard, Isaac, Thomas and John, also one sister, Mrs. John Bowering, Sr. Funeral took place June 3rd.
Friday, June 10, 1927 Married at North River, June 8th, Miss JANE DELANEY, daughter of Mrs. Alice and the late James Delaney, to Mr. WILLIAM DAWSON, son of Mrs. and the late Patrick Dawson, both of this town.

The death occurred at an early hour this morning of Commandant HARDING, for 39 years an active officer in the Salvation Army. Mrs. Harding had been a patient at Grace Maternity Hospital for several weeks and had been in failing health for the last six months. A native of Newfoundland, Commandant Harding entered the Salvation Army 39 years ago, and for the last 12 years had been located in Canada. She was for 8 years in charge of men's social work for the Salvation Army in Halifax, and prior to that time was stationed in Quebec. Commandant Harding is survived by her husband, also a prominent Salvation Army Officer, four sons and two daughters. The funeral will be held Friday. - Halifax Herald, May 25th.

Friday, June 24, 1927 Died at Coley's Point, June 16th, REBECCA, beloved wife of Joseph MORGAN, aged 71 years. Left to mourn are a husband and one daughter, Mrs. Isaac Dawe. Funeral took place June 18th to the C. of E. cemetery.
Friday, July 1, 1927 Died at Country Road, June 26th, Capt. GERTIE MERCER, S.A., beloved daughter of John and Naomi Mercer, aged 23 years. Left to mourn are father, mother, two brothers and three sisters. Funeral took place June 28th to the S.A. cemetery.

Central United Church here was the scene of a very pretty wedding on Oct. 5th, when Miss ELIZABETH VIOLET SNOW, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Snow, Coley's Point, was united in holy bonds of matrimony to Mr. HAYWARD ARCHIBALD SNOW, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Snow, of this town. The bridesmaids were Miss Stella Snow, sister of the bride, and Miss Nellie Snow, sister of the groom.

Mr. M.A. GIRVAN, Manager of the Bank of Nova Scotia, Carbonear, has been transferred to Windsor, N.S., and with Mrs. Girvan and her mother, Mrs. J.R. Goodison, and her young son and daughter, left Carbonear last week. He is being replaced by Mr. MacDonald, formerly manager at Bay Roberts, while Mr. W.C. Hawker, son of Mr. & Mrs. M.J. Hawker, of Carbonear, formerly of Channel, has removed to Bay Roberts. - H.G. Standard.
Friday, October 21, 1927 Victim Disappeared 15 years ago. - On January 13, 1913, ABRAHAM SHELLEY, aged 40, left a logging camp in Rocky Pond, South Pond barrens, Gander Bay, to cross to Glenwood, a distance of 12 miles. He was overtaken by a snowstorm and lost. On Wednesday last, a guide, JAMES JOHN, discovered the skeleton lying between two trees, about 3 miles from Glenwood. The remains were overgrown with moss. Constable Forsey, of Lewisporte, who was dispatched to make an investigation, found a purse containing a note, some silver money and also his pipe in the remnants of the victim's coat. After the disappearance of Shelley, the ex-constable Samuel Dawe, was sent to make search, he traced the man's footsteps in the snow, to within three miles of where he was found.

Capt. ROBERT CHURCHILL drowned while endeavouring to board his schooner in St. John's, October 29th. He is survived by a widow, four sons, Max, William, Isaac and Alton, and one daughter, Fannie. Capt. Churchill was in his 65th year. The funeral took place Monday at St. Matthew's Church, interment in C. of E. cemetery.
Friday, November 11, 1927 Mystery surrounds the disappearance of STEPHEN HOGAN, who left his home at King's Cove on November 2nd, to round up some cattle. Search parties out for three or four days have failed to find any trace of the missing man. He is about 67 years of age, of robust constitution, and sober habits. About 35 years ago a man named JOE HOLLIHAN, who had gone to gather wood in the locality, disappeared mysteriously, no trace of him was ever found, except that one of the search parties picked up the rope that Hollihan carried to tie up his wood. - The Telegram.

Friday, November 18, 1927 Mr. R. A. BADCOCK, traveling evangelist, from the Pentecostal Assembly of the United States, is holding a series of meetings at Clarke's Beach for the past two weeks. Mr. Badcock is a native of Bay Roberts, son of the late Robert Badcock.

Mr. JIM DOVE, St. John's, spent the weekend at "Hawthorne", with his grandparents, Capt. and Mrs. Bartlett.

Died at Mercer's Cove, Nov. 6th, after a short illness, EMMIE MERCER, beloved daughter of William and Elizabeth Mercer, aged 16 years. Deceased had been to the Labrador with her parents for the greater part of the summer and was well until Sept., when the disease which caused her death, was seen to affect her. Left to mourn are father, mother and one brother, William to mourn their sad loss. Funeral took place to the United Church cemetery, Nov. 9th.

The shooting of RICHARD NURSE, by CHARLES A. WILLIAMS, an adopted son, was reported to the Justice Dept. on Tuesday last, by Magistrate Courage, of Belleoram. The affray took place at Poole's Cove, where both men lived. Nurse was shot through the left breast and died instantly. Certain domestic troubles are said to be the cause of the tragedy. Williams is an ex-naval reservist, he has been arrested and charged with murder.

Died at St. John's, Nov. 25th, after a short illness, JOSEPH BOONE, H.M. Customs, aged 59 years. Leaving a wife, two sons and one daughter.

The passing of WILLIAM NOEL, Dept. Minister of Agriculture & Mines, occurred at the General Hospital, Tuesday. About a fortnight ago he was at work in his office, but was taken seriously ill, and an operation was found to be necessary. Deceased was the son of the late Canon Noel, and was born in 1868 at the Rectory in Upper Island Cove. He leaves a widow and four sons to mourn the loss of a loving husband and kind father.

Passed away at the General Hospital, St. John's, Nov. 27th, JOSIAH RUSSELL, of Country Road, aged 68. The funeral took place Wednesday, to the U.C. cemetery, Coley's Point.

Friday, December 9, 1927 A message to the Dept. Minister of Customs from the Collector at Pushthrough, reports that ABRAM NORRIS, of Great Jarvis, was washed overboard and drowned from the schr. Carranza, on Thursday evening,whilst on the passage from Sydney. The Carranza is now at St. Pierre.

The Deputy Minister of Customs has received a message from L. Harvey, Collector, informing him that the body of an aviator was washed ashore at Clam Bank Cove, Port au Port Peninsula, Dec. 4th, 1927. The message read as follows: To Dept. Minister of Customs: The body of an aviator was picked up yesterday morning on the short, at Clam Bank Cove, and is at present under the care of Rev. Father Pineault. The Justice Dept. have been communicated with, it is presumably that of Count J. de LESSEPS. (Sgd.)L. Harvey, Collector. It will be recalled that Count de Lesseps and his mechanic were lost between Oct. 18th to 20th, during a flight over the St. Lawrence from Gaspe, and that no traces of their bodies were found. The wing of the machine was later picked up at Bandy Bay in the St. Lawrence. A later message received by the Minister of Justice, from Mr. A. House, Mgr. of the D.I. & S. Plant at Aquathuna, reads as follows: Body of aviator picked up at Clam Bank Cove yesterday, in good preservation, only the exposed parts of the face and hands disfigured. Understand that papers found on him, identify him as Count de Lesseps. Quite a few papers and medals etc. on his person. Dr. McDonald preceding there at once. - The Telegram

Friday, January 6, 1928New Bedford, Mass. Jan. 3, 1928 - The body of PATRICK RILEY, engineer of the fishing schooner "Mary R. Mullins", who together with the woman operator of an automobile, lost his life when the machine plunged through the rail of a bridge on New Year's Eve, was found yesterday near the shore at Fairhaven, and will be sent home to his parents at Carbonear, Nfld.

Died at St. John's, January 1st,1928, after a long illness, GEORGE ROBERT (Bert), youngest son of W.A. and Elfreida McKay, aged 18 years and 3 months, formerly of Hr. Grace.

Hon. Justice Warren, who returned on Dec. 29th from a visit to Rochester, Minn., whither he went a few weeks ago to get medical treatment, passed away Dec. 31st. Judge Warren was the son of the late William H. Warren and grandson of Rev. Dr. Harvey, formerly of Port de Grave. At the early age of 23 years, he was returned as representative for Trinity Bay, 1909 he was elected for Port de Grave, and became Speaker of the House, from 1919 to 1923, he was Attorney General in the Squire's Govt., and for a little over a year he was Prime Minister, resigning in May, 1924. Funeral took place Monday to the C. of E. cemetery.

Mrs. ELIZABETH LeMESSUREIR, wife of Mr. H.W. LeMessureir, C.M.G., Deputy Minister of Customs, St. John's, died at her residence Sunday morning last.

JOSEPH GARLAND, aged 63, was found drowned in the harbor of St. John's Saturday morning last. He lived with his sister and brother-in-law, Thomas Snelgrove. He left the house to go to the "stage" to get some kindling wood, and it is thought he tripped in something and fell to the water.
Friday, January 20, 1928Struck on the head by a boom of a pile driver while he was supervising construction work at the foot of Jefferson Street, JOSEPH L. MARTIN, 58 years old, President of the Potomac Construction Co., 229 Ninth St. N.E., was almost instantly killed yesterday. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Emergency Hospital. A native of St. John's, Nfld., Mr. Martin came to Washington about 25 years ago. Besides his wife, Mrs. Esther Martin, he is survived by a son, William O. Martin, a daughter, Miss Esther Lillian Martin, and three sisters, Misses Mary, Anna and Margaret Martin. -Washington Star, Dec.18.

THOMAS O'NEIL, 70 years old, former well known resident of Whitney Pier, was instantly killed Wednesday, when struck down by an electric train tram car in Roxbury, Mass. The late Mr. O'Neil was a native of Newfoundland, but had resided in Sydney for about 25 years. About a year ago he moved to Roxbury, Mass. Twp sons, Bernard (Kid) O'Neil, and James W. O'Neil, and one daughter, Mrs. Chas. Kiddy, survive. - Sydney Post

Brigus Briefs: The sudden death of STEPHEN PERCY, 23 years, occurred at his home Saturday under tragic circumstances. The deceased who had been in the country all day Friday, returned to his home in the evening, apparently in good health. His body was found next morning lying across the floor, with life extinct. Sympathy goes to his three brothers who are left to mourn his loss.

Mr. GUS WINTER, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Winter, who had been in United States the past four years, is now spending a couple of months in his old home town.

Friday, March 9, 1928A man named DENIS MAY, who was being taken from Fortune Bay to St. John's by S.S. Propero to enter the Mental Hospital, jumped overboard and was drowned while the steamer was crossing St. Mary's Bay. The body was not recovered.

Obituary - On January 22nd, a great seaman and esteemed resident of Beachy Cove, Bay Roberts, passed away in the person of Capt. ESAU MERCER, the son of the late Charles Mercer, ship owner. He was married twice, first to Miss Lavinia French, who bore three children, two sons and one daughter, his second wife was Miss Fannie Snow, of Clarke's Beach, who survives. Ten children were the offspring of the marriage. At the age of 87 years and 6 months, Capt. Esau, in the words of Tennyson, crossed the bar and entered port, universally regretted by his old friends. While on the way from Seal Cove, White Bay, to Wild Cove, Mrs. WESLEY PARDY, and DAVID WELLS, were caught in the blizzard that raged over the country on Monday last. The woman perished from exposure, and the man managed to get ashore, after being eight hours adrift on the ice.

Wedding - At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Ralph, 25 Watts Street, Chelsea, a very pretty wedding took place, Feb. 29th, the contracting parties were Mr. GEORGE A . HAMPTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ebenezer Hampton of Port de Grave, Nfld., and Miss EVELYN CAVE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Cave of Bay Roberts. Miss Alma Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Martin, played the wedding march. The groom was supported by Mr. Hubert A. Ash, while Miss Florence Hampton, sister of the groom acted as bridesmaid.

Died, at Hr. Grace, Monday night, CATHERINE M. (Kitty Jordan), beloved wife of M. T. JONES, leaving a husband and nine children to mourn their sad loss.

Passed peacefully away at her home, Shearstown, March 9th, after a lingering illness, CARRIE, beloved wife of John BRADBURY, aged 21 years. She leaves to mourn their sad loss, a husband, one darling child, Edith, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Parsons of Coley's Point, also one brother, Charles Parsons.

Snatched from the jaws of death was the experience of a little boy between seven and eight years of age, son of Absalom MOSHER, of Humbermouth. The child had gone to the well, and while dipping up water, he slipped head foremost into it. The rail coach passing, fireman Seabright saw the feet of the youngster sticking up out of the well, having been attracted by the movement of the feet in a fruitless effort of the lad to extricate himself. He told the driver, and immediately the coach was stopped, and the crew rushed to the scene and rescued the little fellow. - Western Star.

Capt. L STEVENSON, commanding the S.S. Caribou, on the Cabot Straits between Port aux Basques and North Sydney, passed away March 18th, at his residence North Sydney, after an illness of five weeks duration.
Friday, March 30, 1928Passed peacefully away, March 16th, at Cambridge, Mass. U.S.A., HELEN, beloved wife of John SWYERS, at the age of 46. Deceased was born at Bonavista, Nfld., but went to the U.S. about 22 years ago, and there married, and has since resided. She leaves to mourn a devoted husband, and two sons, Walter and Gordon, one daughter, Olive Gertrude, and a father, living in Bonavista. (Her mother predeceased her eight months ago.) Also, four sisters, Mrs. Estell, Medford, Mass., Mrs. Dr. Kazanjian, Boston, and Mrs. Kenneth M. Mercer, Bay Roberts, Mrs. M.H. Little, Bonavista, and one brother in Connecticut, U.S.A.

The sudden passing away of Mrs. PEARL HIGGINS, at Country Road, March 25th, was a very heavy blow to her husband and parents. Mrs. Higgins, aged 23 years, leaves to mourn a husband, mother and father, one sister, Mrs. Thomas Batten, Bareneed, two brothers, William and Allan, at home.

Died suddenly, March 18th, at Clarke's Beach, Pastor FRED MORGAN, Bethesda Pentecostal Assembly. Left to mourn are a widow, nee Flora Bowering, of Coley's Point, and mother, Mrs. J. Morgan. Funeral took place March 20th to the Pentecostal Cemetery.

We regret to hear of the death of Mr. S. H. SMITH, father of Mr. S.A. Smith, of the Western Union Cable Staff here, which occurred at Weedon, Aylesburg, England, March 22nd, at the age of 78 years.

Died at Bay Roberts West, March 25th, FANNIE SPARKES, widow of the late William Sparkes, aged 72 years. Left to mourn are two sons, Aubrey, of this town, and Richard in the United States, and one daughter, Mrs. James Mercer, of Grand Falls. Funeral took place Tuesday to the S.A. cemetery.

CLARA WATERMAN, a servant at the home of Mr. J.W. Hiscock, of St. John's, was burned fatally on Monday morning, in attempting to light the kitchen stove with kerosene oil. She was taken to the General Hospital and died there on Thursday night.

Friday, April 13, 1928Passed peacefully away at her home, Coley's Point, April 9th, after a lingering illness, MARY RUSSELL, widow of the late Francis Russell, aged 81 years. Left to mourn their loss are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas French and Mrs. Thomas Purdy, both residing at Corner Brook, and 7 grandchildren. Funeral took place Wednesday afternoon to the C. of E. cemetery.

RUPERT GRIMES, well known to many in Bay Roberts, who served as Staff Sergeant with the Nfld. Regiment, passed away at the General Hospital, Thursday, after a months' illness, at the early age of 35 years. Last year deceased was married to Miss MARY CRON, of Hr. Grace, who survives him. He leaves to mourn a father, ex-Supt. of Constabulary Grimes, wife, two brothers, George F., M.H.A., and Stanley in Montreal, and three sisters, Gladys, Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Andrews.

The death of Mr. M.H. VINICOMBE, ex-M.H.A., and a member of the Board of Liquor Control, took place with tragic suddenness, just about as he was to go to his home, Tuesday. Mr. Vinicombe has not been feeling well for some time, but yet was able to attend to his duties. "Nix", as he was familiarly called, was well liked and respected. His remains being interred at Belvedare Cemetery.

Friday, April 20, 1928Death of J. R. SHEPPARD, Spaniard's Bay, April 18th, he was a J.P. and general dealer. He was 72 years old, born at Harbor Grace. About 47 years ago he came to Spaniard's Bay. He leaves to mourn their sad loss a wife, three sons and two daughters.

Died at French's Cove, April 14th, ROBERT, darling child of Robert and Jane DALE, aged 6 years. Funeral took place April 17th to the U.C. cemetery.

Died at Coley's Point, April 23rd, WALLACE, darling child of Albert and Edith RUSSELL, aged 2 years and 2 months. Funeral took place April 25th to the U.C. cemetery.

A quiet, but very pretty wedding was solemnized at St. Mary's Church, St. John's, April 25th, when MILDRED WINIFRED, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William PINSENT, of New Harbour, T.B., was joined in holy bonds of matrimony to WALTER JOSEPH, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph MERCER, of this town.

Friday, June 15, 1928After an illness lasting about eight months, seven of which he was receiving treatment at the General Hospital, at St. John's, JOHN MERCER, son of Mr. John Mercer (of James), Mercer's Cove, passed peacefully away June 9th. Deceased was 26 years of age. He leaves a father, one brother and two sisters, to mourn their sad loss.

Died, at St. John's, June 11th, WILLIS ANTLE, aged 72 years. Surviving him are a widow, one son, two daughters, two brothers and three sisters.

Died at Hr. Grace, June 8th, GEORGE W. ANDREWS, beloved husband of Louise Andrews, aged 51 years. Leaving a widow, three sons and three daughters to mourn their sad loss. The late Mr. Andrews was manager of Thompsons Drugstore and also of the Anglo American Telegraph office.

Mr. MARK CHAPLIN, tailor, passed away suddenly at his home in St. John's Thursday morning, aged 72 years.
Friday, June 22, 1928Once again the angel of death has cast a gloom over Shearstown, and has removed from our midst one of our popular young men, in the person of GEORGE KEMPTON HOLMES, beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Holmes, who passed peacefully away June 15th at the age of 24 years. Left to mourn their sad loss are a sorrowing father and mother, one brother, Thomas, also one sister, Rosie, and grandmother, Mrs. Naomi Turtle. Funeral took place June 17th to the C. of E. cemetery.

Died at Coley's Point, June 21st, EUNICE GREENLAND, widow of the late Isaac Greenland, aged 82 years. Left to mourn are two sons, Lemuel and Joseph, now in Boston, Mass. and one daughter, Mrs. Jesse Sparkes, French's Cove. Funeral takes place Saturday to the C. of E. cemetery.

Two men, BERNARD LEE and JOHN MOORE, of the fishing schooner, Winnifred Lee, belonging to Grand Bank, were drowned on the Banks on the 14th instant, whilst hauling trawls. Both men are married.
Friday, June 29, 1928JAMES FOX, aged 16 years, of William Street, St. John's, died at the General Hospital Sunday night last, as a result of injuries received a few hours before, when he was hit by a motorcar driven by Mr. R.A. PARSONS, B.L. While we sincerely regret with Mr. Parson's numerous friends, the accident, we are pleased to state, that no blame was attached to Mr. Parsons, the driver of the car, as the unfortunate lad ran from one side of the road to the other to be with his companion, who crossed the street just ahead of him.

On Tuesday, the marriage of Mr. E.L. OKE and Miss JESSIE SHEPPARD, daughter of Inspector and Mrs. Sheppard, was solemnized at St. Paul's Church, Hr. Grace.

Mrs. FREDERICK WISEMAN (nee Susie Barnes) and three children, Harriet, Gordon and Allan, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Chas. Stevens, of Coley's Point, arrived home from New York via St. John's. Mrs. Wiseman has been in poor health for some years, and it is hoped the change of climate will improve her health.
Friday, July 6, 1928A sad drowning accident was reported from Lark Hr. yesterday, when the wife of the light keeper at South Head, Curling, lost her life after a dory in which she and her husband were in, upset.

PAUL KELLY, 16 year old son of Richard Kelly, of Holyrood, was fatally injured Sunday afternoon last, at Holyrood. It appears that Kelly, in company with a companion, was trying to climb a steep hill, when grasped a dead branch, it broke, and the unfortunate boy fell a distance of 170 feet, to a rock pile. A doctor and priest were immediately summoned, but despite their efforts, he passed away.

Mrs. FRED MERCER and little daughter, Dorothy, of Dorchester, Mass., arrived here by express, July 2nd. Mrs. Mercer is visiting her parents Mr. & Mrs. Isaac Morgan, Coley's Point.

On Saturday last, while fishing on Gull Pond, one of the storage waters of Seal Cove River, WILLIAM G. SMITH and JOHN PATTERSON, of St. John's, lost their lives. Evidence of the tragedy was found on Sunday by Messrs. W. Churchill and A. Tuff, of St. John's, who were on their way up the river. The late William Smith leaves a wife and nine children, he was a director of the firm of George M. Barr. The late John Patterson leaves a wife and one child. He was a veteran of the late war and since in the employ of Hawes & Co.

Died at the General Hospital, St. John's, July 5th, JAMES SINCLAIR TAIT, M.D., aged 80 years.

ROBERT DAWE, of this town, was seriously injured and died about one and a half hours afterward, when an eastbound freight train collided with his motor car near Holyrood on Tuesday night last. Mr. Dawe motored to St. John's Tuesday morning last, taking with him Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Baggs and children, to take the S.S. Newfoundland enroute to Boston, Mass. On his return to Bay Roberts in the evening he was accompanied by Capt. Abe Parsons, who was sitting in the front seat with him when the accident occurred. They left St. John's at 6:00 p.m., and proceeded on the trip about 10 minutes before they reached the level crossing at Joy's Point, Holyrood, they met the regular Carbonear train. It is supposed Mr. Dawe presumed that having passed this train, there was no more danger from trains. He came to the crossing at Joy's Point where there is a curve and slight grade, and found a freight train coming from the west. He was near the track at the crossing, it was impossible to stop the car in such a short space. He therefore did the only thing possible, increased the speed in a desperate effort to cross the tracks ahead of the train, but he did not succeed. Capt. Parsons was hurled to a distance of 10 to 15 feet, and sustained minor injuries to his face and hands, while Robert Dawe was found in the car dead. Deceased was the only son of the late Capt. Charles Dawe, and leaves to mourn their sad loss a wife (nee Miss Butt), three sons, Charles in Boston, Adrian in New York, and David at home, two daughters, Mrs. Watts in Hr. Grace, and Emma in New York, and one sister, Mrs.Walter Wills, now on her way to England.

Left to mourn are a husband, one son, Thomas, now at Straits of Belle Isle, and three daughters, Mrs. Reuben Snow, Coley's Point, Mrs. H.J. Died at Coley's Point, August 3rd, ROBERT BADCOCK. Funeral August 6th to the C. of E. cemetery.

An elderly woman, Mrs. ELIZA SAMWAYS, was found dead at the home Country Road today. It appears that neighbors missing her around since Tuesday last, and fearing that something had happened to her, reported to Head Constable Dwyer, who immediately proceeded to her home. After searching awhile, Mr. Dwyer found her in an extension of the house, suspended from the rafters by a cord fastened around her neck. It is thought the unfortunate woman committed the rash act through mental affliction.

WILLIAM JONES, 32 years of age, of Hr. Grace, was killed at Florence colliery, C.B. on Saturday morning, while unloading rails from a flat car. Two rails fell from the car, one across his neck, killing him instantly.

A seven year old lad named HAROLD PIERRE HANSEN, met his death by drowning, at Millertown, on Saturday, by falling overboard from a boat.

A quiet but very pretty wedding was solemnized at St. Peter's Church, Cambridge, Mass., U.S.A, July 21st, when VIOLET MAY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Cave, Sr. of this town, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Mr. ISAAC LANDER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lander of Bonavista. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Muriel Cave, Mr. Norman Lander, brother of the groom provided the duties of best man.

Married at Halifax, N.S., August 10th, GERTRUDE RAYMOND, of Boston, Mass., to BERTRAM A.C. SIMMONDS, son of Mrs. Simmons and the late Capt. Hugh W. Simmonds, formerly of Hr. Grace, now of St. John's.

Mrs. AMBROSE STRONG and daughter, Dorothy, of Scranton, Penn., have been visiting relatives in Boston this summer, and was the guest of Mrs. Andrew Sullivan, her cousin, at their summer camp at Bellingham, Mass. Mrs. Strong was formerly Miss Fanny Mercer, of Bay Roberts.

Died at Coley's Point, August 29th, of meningitis, MAY KINSELLA, beloved daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kinsella.

Mr. ALEXANDER J. McRAE HARVEY, principal director of the well-known firm of A.Harvey & Co., St. John's, passed away suddenly Sept 1st, aged 79 years. He was born in Philadelphia, U.S.A., and came to St. John's in the early 70's.

Miss DORIS MERCER is visiting Bay Roberts, the guest of her aunt, Mrs. George Bursell.

Mr. JOHN WILLIAMS, for 50 years in the employ of Bowering Brothers, has just celebrated his 100th birthday.

Magistrate McDONALD, retired, of St. George's, passed away at that place recently at a very advanced age.

Mr. HECTOR McNEIL, former comptroller with the Reid Nfld. Co., passed away on Thursday morning last.

Miss Margaret Finn, sister of the groom, was bridesmaid, the groom was assisted by Mr. Augustus A. Brennan, brother of the bride. A reception was held at the home of the bride's sister, Miss Babe Brennan. On returning from a motor trip, Mr. and Mrs. Finn will reside at 30 Birkeshire Street, Cambridge, Mass.

Friday, October 12, 1928During the past week or so, four prominent men of or identified with Newfoundland have passed away. They were Capt. VICTOR GORDON, C.M.G., High Commissioner for Nfld. in England, at London; Dr. A.A. CHISHOLM, of Manuels, at Whitbourne; Mr. E. LEO CARTER, Solicitor, at St. John's; and the news was received today of the death of Mr. ROBERT DUFF, of Carbonear, at Montreal. The bodies of the late Capt. It is with much regret we record the passing of Mr. ROBERT MERCER, veteran pressman of the Evening Telegram, which occurred at St. John's, October 24th, after a brief illness. The late Robert Mercer was born in this town in 1856. He leaves to mourn three brothers, Esau in Toronto, Job at Grand Falls and Elijah at Springdale, Notre Dame Bay. Interred to the C. of E. cemetery, Coley's Point, today.

RUSSELL, formerly of Country Road, Bay Roberts, Nfld., and for the past 13 years been residing in Everett and Manchester, Mass. He reached the age of 71 in July. Left to mourn are a loving wife, four sons, Ruel in Prince Rupert, B.C., James in Brandon, Vt., Ralph in Ramsgate, England, William in the U.S.Navy, and one daughter, Patience , 8 Kiswick Street, Boston. Also three brothers, Joseph in Bay Roberts, John in Vancouver, B.C., Azaniash in Millinocket, Maine, and one sister, Mrs. Ellen Smith, Bangor, Maine. Burial took place the 20th instant in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.

The body of a boy named MILTON MARTIN, aged 12 ½ , missing from his house in St. John's since August 14th, was discovered floating on the surface of the harbor, on Friday last.

The following message was received yesterday by the Justice Dept., with reference to the drowning accident which occurred at Port Union on Monday afternoon, "Special train arrived here last night about ten o'clock, bringing bodies of TOBIAS TEMPLEMAN and his son, HUBERT TEMPLEMAN, and HERBERT KEEL, and his adopted son, HERBERT TEMPLEMAN, all four were drowned yesterday at Camp 7 while crossing pond. First indications of any accident were slides seen on pond by men coming from woods in another direction. Inquiry being held today."

Mr. WILLIAM E. PARSONS, formerly of Bay Roberts, but now of Hr. Breton, where he is Magistrated, visited Bay Roberts last week, when he was the guest of his brother, Mr. Reuben Parsons. Mr. Parsons left Bay Roberts about 34 years ago to engage in school teaching on the southwest coast.

Passed peacefully away at Coley's Point, Dec. 8th, Mrs. HENRY GREENLAND, aged 75 years. Left to mourn are her husband, three sons, Stephen, Samuel and Albert, 24 grand children, 2 great grandchildren, two brothers and one sister. Funeral took place Dec. 11th to St. John the Evangelist Church, Coley's Point.

The body of HENRY LYON, who conducted a watch making and jewelry business in St. John's, was found floating in the harbor of St. John's Wednesday morning. In the 70's, he kept a large book and jewelry store in Hr. Grace.

Mr. JOHN RORKE, Sr., last surviving son of the Hon. John Rorke, of Carbonear, and head of the well-known firm of J. Rorke & Sons, died at his home in Carbonear on Thursday, at the age of 86 years. The late Mr. Rorke was unmarried. Funeral takes place Saturday.

Mr. R. B. WELLS, who spent a few days here visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Wells, returned to Kentville, N.S., via St. John's, today. Mr. Wells has resided in Kentville for ten years, first going there with the Bank of Nova Scotia, and since becoming the owner of a taxi service.

Gordon (Carrie), of Hr. Grace, four sons, George B. and W. J. residing at Hr. Grace, Allan T. at Corner Brook, and Max E., of the Bank of Montreal, St. George's. One son, Hedley, predeceased her some years ago. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren. Funeral took place Wednesday.

Died at Shearstown, Dec. 24th, HENRY MERCER, beloved husband of Emma Mercer, aged 74 years. Left to mourn are a widow, six sons and one daughter. Funeral took place Thursday, to the C. of E. cemetery.

The bodies of EDWARD NOSEWORTHY and HANNAH NOSEWORTHY, were found near the old railway track off Freshwater Road, St. John's, on Christmas Eve. Death is presumed to have occurred from exposure and lack of nourishment. An inquiry is being held.

Miss FLORENCE RUSSELL arrived home from Boston, Mass., recently and will spend the winter months with her mother, Mrs. Ed Russell.

A veteran C. of E. clergyman, Rev. GEORGE CHAMBERLAIN, passed away at Catalina early New Year's Day. He was the senior priest in the C. of E. in Newfoundland.

NORMAN TOOPE, aged 24, was drowned at Ireland's Eye, T.B., Wednesday, as a result of an explosion on board a motor boat.

Died, January 2nd, EDWARD SNOW (of Jno.), beloved husband of Zelia Snow, aged 59 years. Left to mourn are a widow, four sons, John and Chesley at home, Edward, at Catalina, and Hugh, in Everett, Mass., and one daughter, Mrs. Wm. Mercer (of Wm.), of French's Cove. Seven grandchildren and one brother, Joseph, residing here.

Leaving a wife, formerly Miss Roberts, and five daughters, Miss Annie, who was on active service during the war as nurse with the Canadian Medical Corps, now residing at Regina, Lottie, Mrs. (Capt.) George Bursey of Toronto, Miss Stella, at home, Miss Pearl, of Regina, and Alma, Mrs. Clarke of Regina, three sons, Wm. of Youngstown, Ohio, Ralph, of Regina, both of whom are war vets, and John, at present at Regina. Funeral will be held on Monday.

Miss EDITH LUSH, daughter of the well-known train conductor, Mr. Chas. Lush, passed away at Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Jan. 9th, following a delicate operation. Mr. & Mrs. Lush were on their way to visit their daughter when they received the sad news at Sydney.

Friday, January 25, 1929Mr. JAMES D. JARVIS, formerly a businessman of Hr. Grace, died at Aultsville, Ont. on Jan. 4th. He conducted a general store in Aultsville in 1874, he was married to Fannie Mary Parsons, daughter of the late Mark Parsons, of Hr. Grace, who survives him.

The special jury was sworn as follows: - Robert W. Tircey, Ira S. Kennedy, Frank Ewing, Harold W. Fleet, Edward Neary, Leonard Garland, Wm. Jocelyn, Frederick Andrews, William B. Wardlow. - Mr. Gushue opened the case for the plaintiff. - Mr. L.E. Emerson, K.C. moves that the court and jury visit the locus. - Mr. Barron for defendant consents. - The jury with Hon. Mr. Justice Kent and Rt. Hon. Sir William Lloyd and the Counsel for both sides left shortly before eleven o'clock by special train to view the locus. They returned to town and resumed the session at 3 p.m. - This action arises out of the death of ROBERT DAWE who was killed near Holyrood last July whilst proceeding to his home by auto. Damages amounting to $100,000 is claimed by Mrs. Dawe as administratrix of his estate.

Obituary - At 9 o'clock Monday evening, Mrs. MARGARET TAYLOR passed within the veil. Stricken with a severe attack of appendicitis, she entered Grace Hospital on Sunday week past and underwent an operation. Her case was seen to be grave, but as the days passed there was hope that she would pull through. Yesterday morning her condition appeared satisfactory, but in the afternoon a change came and at the above hour her soul took its flight. Mrs. Taylor was the second daughter of the late Capt. Josiah and Mrs. Anna PENNEY, of Carbonear, and widow of Ernest W. Taylor, late General Freight Agent with the Nfld. Railway, whose death three years ago this month was widely regretted. Left to mourn are a daughter and son, Anna, at Dalhousie Unitversity, and Hal, at home, sisters, Mrs. E.H. Colpitts, of Orange, N.J., who left for here Sat., Mrs. James Pike, of Edmonton, Alberta; and Mrs. Stan Duder, and Miss Grace Penney, of the Memorial College staff, residing in the city, and two brothers, Fred E. Penney, of the Railway Engineering Staff, and John H. of Carbonear. Another brother, Josiah, made the supreme sacrifice in the war.

Died Jan. 22nd, WILFRED ESAU KELLY, beloved son of George and the late Patience Kelly, aged 21 years. Leaving father, step-mother, two brothers, Albert in Toronto, and Bertram in Bristol, Conn., and one sister, Mrs. Jack White, Grand Falls. Funeral took place Jan. 24th to the U.C. cemetery.

Friday, February 8, 1929 While engaged logging near Shoal Harbor, T.B., a young man named LLEWELLYN BUGDEN, was accidentally killed by a tree falling on him. The deceased is a resident of Pelley, Smith's Sound.

A little 8 year old boy named CHARLES HUNTER BROWN, living on Le Marchant Rd., St. John's, while on his way home from school a few days ago, jumped on a slovan to get a ride. The boy fell off the slovan and one of the rear wheels passed over his shoulder and head crushing his head to a pulp. He died shortly afterwards.

Mr. WM. TRASK, principal of the U.C. Superior School here, received a message on Sunday morning informing him that his wife, residing at Elliston, T.B., was seriously ill. Mr. Trask was rushed to Avondale to catch the express, but we learn before he reached home, Mrs. Trask had passed away.

In the death of Lt.-Col. MICHAEL S. SULLIVAN, M.H.A., which occurred May 22nd, the country loses one of its foremost citizens. The late Mr. Sullivan was born at Presque, Placentia Bay, in 1876. He was married in 1903 to Miss Kathleen Thompson, daughter of the late Charles Thompson, of St. John's, and leaves to mourn besides a widow, one son, one daughter, mother, brother and sister.
Friday, May 31, 1929 BAXTER THISTLE, of Hr. Grace, aged 21 years, working on the drive at North Lake, in the employ of W.I. Bishop, was accidentally killed Saturday, by a piece of pulpwood caused by an explosion of dynamite. The body is going home on this evening's train in care of his father, Henry Thistle.

Mr. JIM SPRACKLIN, who has been away for 29 years, is visiting his brother, Mr. Tom Spracklin, of the Gullies.

Friday, June 21, 1929 JOHN JAMES EFFORD, died June 8th, at his residence, 658 East Tenth, Vancouver, B.C. in his 56th year. Mr. Efford had been a resident of Vancouver and its vicinity for 32 years. With his brother, Robert, he was a member of the pioneer grocery and provision firm of Efford Brothers, which has recently, upon Mr. Efford's retirement, become engaged in the wholesale fruit trade, under the name of Robert Efford & Co. Ltd. From Port de Grave in Nfld. where he was born, Mr. Effort came west at the age of 24. For two years he remained in Vancouver and then moved to Sapperton. There he was joined in 1902 by Miss ANNIE TUCKER, also of Port de Grave, whom he married. In 1907 Mr.Efford returned to Vancouver and in partnership with his brother, formed the firm Efford Brothers. He is survived by his wife, one son and four daughters. His brother, Robert, also survives. Dr. William Efford, another brother, died in Chicago five years ago. - Vancouver Daily Province.

Passed away at Burin, June 16th, after an illness of two months, PEARL B., beloved wife of Robert I. HOLLETT, and daughter of Rachel and the late Joshua Bradbury, of Bay Roberts East, at the early age of 29 years. Left to mourn are a husband, two children, Fraser and Gerald, mother, also two sisters, Emmie and Ruby, and one brother, Stanley, all residing in Boston, Mass. The funeral took place June 20th to the Central United Church and cemetery, Bay Roberts.

Friday, July 19, 1929 Charlottetown, P.E.I., July 4 - VICTOR COMPTON, 14 yr. old son of Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Compton, met death tonight when the horse he was unhitching from a wagon kicked him over the heart, killing him instantly.

Friday, July 26, 1929 RALPH TUFF, 16 yr. old son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles R. Tuff, of St. John's, was drowned while swimming in Long Pond on Sunday last. The unfortunate boy, in company with a number of others, was swimming near a raft moored some distance from the shore when it is presumed he took a sudden cramp. The caretaker, who was nearby, and several others made an attempt at rescue but could not locate the lad after he sank. About an hour afterward the body was recovered.

An accident resulting in the death of PATRICK J. SHEA, of St. John's, occurred on Tuesday when a pony attached to a governess cart, in which Mr. Shea and his grandson were driving, became frightened and dashed across the railway crossing at Waterford Bridge, the cart being hit and demolished by the Steam Coach returning citywards from Bowring Park and Mr. Shea was thrown to the ground several feet away, his injuries proving fatal. The boy escaped with only a few injuries. No blame is attached to the driver of the coach.

On Monday last, RANDALL GARLAND, aged 27, of Lower Island Cove, B.D.V., was drowned when the boat in which he was being towed to the fishing ground was struck and demolished by a "hit-and-run" motorboat containing two unknown men. The unfortunate man was in a small rowboat in tow of a motorboat in which was his father and brother. They had been in Flambro Head Cove at early morning securing bait before proceeding to the fishing grounds and on going out of the cove the occupants of the motor boat saw another boat coming directly towards them. They shouted to warn the other boat which managed to clear the Garlands' motor boat but the small boat which was about 30 feet behind was cut to the water's edge, and before father and brother could effect a rescue Randall Garland had sunk from sight. It is thought he was struck and rendered unconscious before being thrown in the water.

Friday, August 9, 1929 On June 10th, 1929, there passed from this realm to the Great Beyond, REUBEN MERCER, one of the oldest men of Shearstown. He leaves to mourn three daughters, Mrs. Herbert Sparkes, Shearstown, Mrs. Thomas Humphries, St. John 's, Mrs. Bert Hierlihy, Brigus Rd., eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. John Earle, and one brother, Isaac Mercer, both of Shearstown. Interment to the U.C. cemetery.

Friday, August 23, 1929 It was with deep regret that the news was received here on Sunday last of the death of HECTOR DAWE, eldest son of Mr. Isaac Dawe, of Coley's Point, which occurred in Boston, Mass., on Sat. night. The late Mr. Dawe was about 29 years of age and was married about three years ago to Miss Gracie Snow of this town, who with their two small children was residing with him in Boston. He has been working as a carpenter in the U.S. The remains accompanied by his wife and children is expected to arrive here by Sat.'s train.
Friday, September 6, 1929 JAMES F. BANCROFT passed away at the General Hospital, St. John's, on Tuesday last. Deceased was 74 years of age, and had resided at Topsail for the past 20 years. The late Mr. Bancroft taught in the C. of E. school in Bay Roberts 40 years ago. The late Mr. Bancroft was a native of Chester, England. He leaves to mourn a wife, son, two daughters and ten grandchildren.

FREDERICK HALFORD JOYCE, aged 24 ½ yrs., who was hit by a motor car driven by Mr. C.A. Hubley on Harvey Rd., St. John's, Monday night last, passed away at the General Hospital Tuesday without regaining consciousness. Deceased was a son of Patrick and Blance Joyce, and resided at 34 King's Road.

A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the R.C. Church, Bay Roberts on Sept. 3rd, when JAMES L. BURKE, son of Mr. & Mrs. R. Burke, Brigus, and a popular employee of the Western Union Cable Co., Bay Roberts, led to the altar Miss ROSE E. FITZPATRICK, Bay Roberts. She was attended by Miss Madeline Fitzpatrick, sister of the bride. The groom was supported by Mr. T.A. Brien.

WILLIAM ABBOTT, of 54 George St., St. John's, was instantly killed Wednesday night when he was thrown off the rear car of the special train that brought the L.S.P.U. excursion from Ferryland to the city. The train left Ferryland at 10:15 p.m., and shortly after leaving the deceased, who was on the platform of the rear car, was thrown off when the train suddenly rounded a curve. The accident was immediately reported and the train stopped. It had to back up nearly a mile. The body was found and placed in the baggage car and brought to the railway station. Passed away Sept.2nd, after an illness of only seven hours, of cerebral hemorrhage, FRANCES MARY (Fannie), beloved wife of C.E. RUSSELL, J.P., and Prop. of The Guardian, aged 51 years. Deceased was a daughter of the late George and Susie ANDREWS, and was born at Harbor Grace on Aug. 25th, 1878. Her mother died when she was quite young, and she was then taken to St. John 's by her aunt, the late Mrs. (Capt.) Richard Pike, where she lived until her marriage in Toronto, Ont. in 1901. her residence in Bay Roberts dates from 1909. She leaves to mourn a husband, seven children, Gladys (Mrs. Wm. E. Cave) residing at 2512 Stevenson St., Flint, Mich., and Charlie, George, Winnie, Arthur, David and Wilson at home, on e grandchild, David Cave, and one brother, Robert J. Andrews, of East Lynn, Mass., U.S.A. The funeral took place Sept. 4th to the U.C. cemetery.

Died at Country Road, Sept. 5th, JULIA, aged 66, beloved wife of William BELBIN. Left to mourn are a husband, two sons, William in Cambridge, Mass., and Rev. The deceased was born at Mercer's Cove and was the daughter of the late Zebedee and Ellen Mercer. During a severe thunderstorm on Wednesday, a man named SAMUEL KING, of Perry 's Cove, B.D.V., was instantly killed when struck by lightning while he was taking shelter from the rain in the store of Norman Penney, at Salmon Cove. At the latter place several houses were struck and a number of people received minor injuries.
Friday, September 20, 1929 The sad news was received here Tuesday last of the passing of Mr. ESAU BADCOCK of French's Cove, which occurred at Ship Harbor, Labrador, Sept. 16th. No particulars are yet to hand. The body is being brought home for burial. The late Mr. Badcock was 56 years old. He is survived by a widow (nee Miss Elizabeth Greenland), one son, Chesley (now returning from U.S.), and one daughter, Edith. Funeral took place Sept. 24th to the Central U.C.

A man named JAMES BUTLER, of St. John's, was instantly killed Wednesday night when his head, projecting through the window of a motor truck in which he was a passenger, came in contact with a telephone pole and the spinal column was broken at the neck. The driver of the truck, PHILIP LeMESSURIER, was taken to the police station, in custody of Det. Sergt. Lee and was detained at the police station, and appeared before the Magistrates Court Thursday where he was charged with feloniously killing James Butler, and also on a charge of intoxication. He did not plead but was remanded, and bail was given in the sum of $20,000. It appears that the unfortunate man Butler with LeMessurier, (manager of the Brookfield Ice Cream Co.) and a man named Parsons were coming out the Bay Bulls road in a Brookfield truck. A motor car was seen coming out of the Old Petty Harbor Rd. and in trying to avoid a collision the truck ran into a ditch and ran along a short distance, when Butler must have either put his head out the window to see where they were going, or attempted to jump out, with the above result. Mr. Butler was about 26 years of age, was married and had one child.
Friday, September 27, 1929 The quiet marriage of Miss FLORENCE ELMS, Toronto, to Mr. GILBERT LACEY, Cranbrook, B.C., was solemnized at Grace Church-on-the-Hill, Toronto, on May 28th. Friday, October 11, 1929 Stepping backwards into an open hole, ROBERT KENNEDY, 26, of 188 Broadway, Chelsea, formerly of Port de Grave, Newfoundland, an ironworker in the employ of the Gow Const. Co., plunged 78 feet to his death on the site of work for the new 21 story Tower building at Federal, Franklin and Devonshire Streets last night. Kennedy's cousin, Harry Martin, figured in a heroic but vain effort to save his life. Kennedy just returned from Newfoundland where had attended the funeral of his father, Samuel, was at work yesterday for the first time in three weeks. He was killed just five minutes before quitting time. - Boston Post.

Mr. JOHN J. PENNEY, the well-known life insurance agent and formerly conductor on the railway, was drowned at the head of Bowring Bros. wharf, at St. John's on Tuesday, October 8th, aged 46 years. Leaves to mourn wife, four children, two sons, two daughters, two sisters and one brother.

Died September 29th, at Hodge's Cove, Random, JACOB HIGGINS, aged 88 years and 8 months. He was born at Bishop's Cove, January 27th, 1841, and has been residing at Hodge's Cove for 56 years. Left to mourn are three sons, one daughter, seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Died at Clarke's Beach, October 7th, JOHN DAWE, aged 64 years. Left to mourn are wife, five sons and two daughters. Funeral took place October 9th to the Bethsada Church and cemetery.
Friday, October 18, 1929 In a fire, which destroyed the home of Alfred Parsons, at St. John's recently, two children were burned to death. The children were alone in the house at the time, the father having gone to work, and the mother was visiting her sick mother-in-law.

Died October 13th, JOHN FITZPATRICK, aged 85 years. Leaving to mourn four sons, Thomas, Patrick, James and Augustus, all of this town, two daughters, Mrs. Alice Delaney, of N.Y., and Mrs. Gerald Murphy, residing at St. John's. Funeral October 15th to the R.C. Church.

Friday, October 25, 1929 Obituary - Passed peacefully away at his residence, Coley's Point, Oct. 20th, Capt. JOHN DAWE, beloved husband of Caroline Dawe, aged 82 years. Deceased was born at Port de Grave, a son of the late Elijah Dawe. He with his brothers, Hon. Eli and the late Wm. Dawe organized the Avalon Coal Co., until it was taken over by his nephew, Mr. Lewis Dawe, a few years ago. Left to mourn his passing are a wife, five sons, James (Captain of the schr. Fort Garry), Frank at home, and Harry, Arthur and John in the U.S.; three daughters, Mrs. Alan Bradbury, Corner Brook, Mrs. Wm. French, Coley's Pt., and Mrs. William Wills, Detroit, Mich.; one brother, Hon. Eli Dawe, M.L.C.; and three sisters, Mrs. Robert Parsons, Mrs. Edward Bartlett and Mrs. Robert Piercy, residing in B.C. The funeral took place to St. John the Evangelist (Coley's Pt.) Church and cemetery, Oct. 25th.
Friday, November 1, 1929 There passed away at his residence, Circular Rd., St. John's, on Sunday, Mr. JOSEPH O'REILLY, late Assessor in charge of the Assessor's Dept., at the aged of 77 yrs. Mr. O'Reilly was twice married, first to Miss Calpin, of this town, and then to Bridget, widow of the late Patrick Cahill. Five children survive: Charles O'Reilly, in U.S.A, , Mrs. Margaret Daly, St. John 's, by his first marriage, and Dr. J.B. O'Reilly, Mrs. Wm. Organ and Miss Hildred O'Reilly, by his second marriage. Funeral took place Monday.

Died at Shearstown, Oct. 27th, SARAH, widow of the late James HOLMES, aged 82 years. Leaving to mourn are two daughters, Mrs. Abram Deering and Mrs. Wm. Earle, both of Shearstown. Funeral took place Monday to the C. of E. cemetery. Deceased had tended her sick daughter, Mary, widow of the late John Brown, and who died some two weeks ago. The late Mrs. Brown leaves two children, Eldred and Sarah.

Married on Oct. 17th, Miss ALMA BURSEY, of Humbermouth, became the bride of Mr. HARVEY DAWE, of Port de Grave. The wedding reception was held at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Gale Bursey.

Died on Oct. 28th, MYRA, beloved wife of George YETMAN, and daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Mercer of Seth, aged 25 years. Left to mourn their sad loss are a husband, three children, father, mother, three brothers, and two sisters. Funeral took place Wednesday to the S.A. cemetery.

Friday, November 15, 1929 JOSEPH LOCKE, 55 , of Tizzard's Harbour, died suddenly of heart failure, at Bishop's Falls logging camp on Sunday.

Passed peacefully away at French's Cove on Oct. 10th, MARY ANN, widow of the late Robert DALE. Left to mourn are two sons, Robert and William, and six daughters, Mrs. Chris Bishop and Mrs. Stephen Roach, Coley's Point, and Mrs. H. Barrett, Mrs. Joseph Moore and Mrs. Edward Kelligrew, U.S.A., and Mrs. Arthur Flight, Lower Small Point, B.D.V.

Passed peacefully away at the Dock, November 11th, MARGARET JANE NEWELL, relict of the late Nathaniel Newell, aged 80 years. Leaving to mourn two sons, Jabez Tucker and Harold Newell, three daughters, Mrs. John B. Smith, South River, Mrs. Nathan Mercer, Bay Roberts and Mrs. Robt. J. Taylor of South River. Funeral took place on November 13th, to the C. of E. Church and cemetery, Bareneed. Her youngest son, Cpt. Clement Leslie Newell was killed in action in Flanders in 1918.

The funeral of the late Mrs. THOMAS ROBERTS, who died Nov. 11th, aged 69 years, took place in the U.C. Thursday. Much sympathy is felt for her husband and son, also her two sisters, Mrs. W. Smith, of St. John's, and Mrs. Steneford, of Hartford, Conn.

St. Matthew's Church was the scene of a pretty wedding on Nov. 2nd, when ALICE LILIAN, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur GEORGE, of Bay Roberts, was united in marriage to Mr. CHESTER E. SMITH, of the Western Union Cable Staff, Bay Roberts, and formerly of Boston, Mass. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Audrey George. The best man was Mr. T.A. Brien.

The two young men of Port de Grave, ROBERT and OSWALD BUTLER, who are being treated at the Grenfell Hospital, St. Anthony, for deformity of the limbs caused by infantile paralysis, are improving all the time and it is expected they will be returning home next spring. Their mother, Mrs. Samuel Dawe, is now visiting friends at Coley's Point.

A message received at St. John's, Thursday evening from the Postal Telegraph operator at Port aux Basques, reported that the bodies of ISAAC CARTER, Commercial Cable telegraph operator, and EDGAR LeVALLIENT had been recovered from the sea near Point Enragee. The two men left Port aux Basques 4 o' clock Friday morning to go duck shooting, but as they had not returned up to 6 p.m., fears were entertained for their safety, and on investigation another tragedy was unfolded.

PETER NOEL was knocked down on Water Street, St. John's on Thursday by a motor car driven by Gordon Elton. He died later at the General Hospital.

Friday, November 29, 1929 A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the R.C. Cathedral, St. John's, on the 26th inst., when MARY, only daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Edward RYAN, Spaniard 's Bay, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to RICHARD, son of Mrs. Eliza FINN, also of Spaniard's Bay, and agent with the Nfld. Railway. The bride was attended by her cousin, Miss Gertrude Ryan, while Mr. James Finn, brother of the groom performed the duties of best man. A reception was held for the immediate relatives and friends at the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. M.J. Cleary, 117 Patrick Street.

New York, Nov. 23 - CHARLES C. PATERSON, 26, a broker and Mrs. MARY J. PATERSON, 28, both of Queen's Road, St. John's, Nfld. will be married in N.Y. today. Mr. Paterson, the son of Lamont and Florence Paterson, was born in St. John's. The bride, who is the daughter of Robert and Bella Shea Mare, was born in St. John's. Her former husband died in 1928. - News

HENRY HUTCHING, of Spaniard's Bay, who pleaded guilty to obtaining money and goods under false pretences from Baine, Johnstone & Co., a few days ago, was sentenced by Judge Morris to 12 months imprisonment. JAMES SHARPE, who was charged with having assisted Hutchings to obtain the goods and money under a certain false pretence, was released on bail, in the sum of $3,000.00.
Friday, December 6, 1929 Passed away at his residence, Clarke's Beach, on Dec. 1st, FRANK NOSEWORTHY, aged 80 years. Though born at Cupids, he had resided in Clarke's Beach for the greater part of his life, where he had established a successful business. He is survived by a widow, one son, William, of Clarke's Beach, five daughters, Mrs. Rev. Bandy, in Ontario, Canada, Mrs. F. Hue and Mrs. E. Templeman, of St. John's, Mrs. R.J. Smith, Cupids, and Mrs. Rev. Jackson, Bell Island; one brother, Jonathan in B.C., and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Smith, Toronto. The funeral took place at Clarke's Beach, Dec. 3rd.

Capt. GEORGE VALLIS and SAMUEL PARSONS and JOHN WALSH, all married and residents of St. John's, were drowned on Sunday when No. 1 pilot boat in which they took Pilot Lewis to the S.S. Saguacha, which was towing the disable steamer Hertha to St. John's, was swamped shortly after putting Capt. Lewis aboard the former ship. A search was made near the spot where the boat was last seen, but no sign of either the boat or missing men was found.

The late Mrs. Wilcox, who was 77 years of age, leaves to mourn three daughters, Mrs. Edward Grant, Halifax, N.S., Mrs. Earnest Snow, of Waterford, Mass., and Miss Myrtle Wilcox, Cambridge, Mass.; two brothers, Rev. Canon Dawe, Hamilton, Ont., Capt. A.W. Dawe, Vancouver, B.C., and one sister, Mrs.Samuel Dawe, New Westminster, B.C. Interment will take place tomorrow, here, from the residence of Mr. Arch Wilcox.

Friday, December 27, 1929 Passed peacefully away Dec. 18th, at Upper Island Cove, ELIZABETH LUNDRIGAN, aged 83 years, wife of the late John Lundrigan. Left to mourn their sad loss are two sons of Upper Island Cove, and one daughter, Mrs. Walter Baggs, St. John's, and 21 grandchildren.

The sudden death of HARRY WILLIAM BRADLEY, occurred Tuesday in his 44th year, after a short illness. Mr. Bradley was born in Nfld., later moving to Bangor. He is survived by his widow, three sons, Armand, serving with the U.S. Navy in China, Kenneth and Harry Jr., both of Bangor, a sister, Mrs. Lewis Judkins of Greenville, a brother, of Millinocket - Bangor (Me.) "Daily Commercial", Dec. 18, 1929. * The late Mr. Bradley was well known in this town having been born here. He has been residing in Bangor for about 27 years. He was a son of the late Thomas and Emma Bradley of Bay Roberts West. Mr. Reuben A. Russell is a cousin of the deceased.
