Description:
The Bay Roberts Guardian featured local, provincial and foreign news, public notices, personal and social news, proceedings of the legislature, and fishing and shipping news. Under the editorship of C.E. Russell (1877-1937), the paper reflected his involvement in politics. In 1913, the editorials were extremely pro-Morris, supporting the People's party and opposing Coaker. The paper expressed opposition to Confederation at that time. In 1915, more independence for the outports from the influence of St. John's was advocated.
In 1923, Russell was snubbed by the Opposition Party which he had previously supported. The editorial policy of Guardian abruptly changed sides and supported the Liberals under Richard Squires. The paper sided with the Monroe government in 1924 and the editor was appointed Minister of Public Works. In 1926, the editor resigned that office and became a neutral, resigning from politics in 1928. The paper became less political beginning in the late 1920's, focusing on local issues such as the need for breakwaters and traffic control. Still mildly supportive of the government, the editorials ran to political philosophizing, frequently decrying public apathy. The paper had a neutral attitude toward the Commission of Government at first, but by 1937 became extremely critical of its shortcomings. The Guardian supported Confederation in 1948.

Friday, January 19, 1923	Our First Issue Since 1920 - With this issue, The Guardian makes its bow to its old and new readers for the first time since its suspension in 1920. We need not refer to its past history; it speaks for itself. In the future we hope to send out from week to week a journal that will far exceed in every particular The Guardian of years ago.
	The evening service in Central Methodist Church, Bay Roberts, on Sunday, October 22nd, took the form of a memorial service to the late CLAYTON SPARKS, aged 17 years, only and beloved son of Jesse and Mary Sparks, of French's Cove, who was drowned on April 15th last. In days and weeks that followed every effort was put forth toward the recovery of the body, but without success.
	Obituary - On Friday, November 3rd, one of the oldest citizens of French's Cove, in the person of JOSIAH BADCOCK, calmly, peacefully and without a struggle, exchanged this world for another at the ripe old age of 94 years. Those who had the privilege of knowing the deceased held him in the highest esteem, not only for his hardy, manly and brave characteristics, but also for his moral qualities of industry, straightforwardness and honesty. Mr. Badcock's ancestors were of old Devonshire stock, and to those he was indebted for that strong physique which made it possible for him to endure almost any hardship. Deceased prosecuted the seal fishery 58 springs, going at first with his uncle, Capt. JOHN NORMAN, of Brigus, at the early age of 14 years. For a number of years he prosecuted the cod fishery, chiefly at Battle Harbor, until he was 81 years of age. He was one of the crew of the brig, "Rescue", and was mainly instrumental in saving that ship from destruction near the Fish Rock, off Battle Harbor, during the storm which resulted in the "Huntsman" disaster. Up until a few weeks of his death he was ever ready to relate his eventful experiences battling with the winds and waves around the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador for more than half a century. The funeral took place on Sunday, Nov. 5th, interment in the old Methodist cemetery, Rev. Samuel Baggs officiating. Left to mourn are one son, George Badcock, three daughters, Mary Jane at home, Mrs. Henry Hutchings and Mrs. George French, of Seattle, Wash., and one brother, Isaac Badcock, of French's Cove. Another brother, Azariah Badcock, passed away at St. John's a few weeks ago.
	Nurse EMMIE PARSONS, who has been on a prolonged visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Parsons, left on Jan. 5th to take passage by the Silva for Montreal, where she will resume her work.
	We understand that Mr. GEO HIERLIHY and others, who have certain gold claims on Middle Brook, Labrador, has recently received from certain American capitalists an offer for their entire holdings. They consider their claims to be of such value that it is not likely the thing will be finalized unless arrangements are made for the holders to retain an interest in the property.
	Successful Newfoundland Student - Mr. WILSON POWELL, of Bonavista, who was a few years ago, Principal of the Methodist Superior School here, has just been elected President of Queen's University, Kingston, Ont. Alma Mater Society. The College Journal says: To those who do not know him, Wilson comes to us from Newfoundland. Born at Bonavista, he received his early education in Bonavista High School and at the Methodist College, St. John's. Following this he was Principal of the Twillingate High School for two years. He edited the "Canadian Machine Gunner" while in training at Seaford, and after the Armistice was Staff Writer for the Khaki Varsity. Other Newfoundland students at Kingston are: MAX GOSSE of Spaniard's Bay, ROBERT CRAMM of Green's Harbor, and WILLIAM HARRIS, son of the Rev. Wm. Harris, of Harbor Grace.
	Wedding Bells - On Wednesday, Nov. 1st, a very pretty wedding was solemnized at St. Matthew's Church, when Miss GLADYS SUSIE, elder daughter of Capt. and Mrs. John PARSONS, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to WILLIAM FREDERICK, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. William GUY, of Carbonear. She was supported by her sister, Ida, and Miss Jennie Guy, sister of the groom, while the groom was supported by Mr. Robert J. Mercer.
Friday, February 2, 1923	We regret to record the passing of a very popular citizen of Bell Island, Mr. GEORGE STEWART. Many will remember that Mr. Stewart plied his motor boat, E.L. Stewart between Bell Island, Harbor Grace and other Conception Bay communities. His many friends will sympathize with his wife and two children, whom he leaves to mourn their loss.
	Mr. BERNARD BRENNAN, who left here about New Year to work at Sydney, N.S., has since removed to Cambridge, Mass., where he has obtained suitable employment.
	Wedding Bells - At Copenhagen, Denmark, BENDIX-OLESEN, daughter of the late editor Bendex-Olesen, Denmark, was united in marriage to her cousin, Mr. AAGE VARJELDS, a traveler for one of the biggest book firms in Scandinavia. The young bride was given away by her father's cousin, the Inspector of Greenland. Some eight years ago the bride and her mother was visiting Newfoundland, and while staying at St. John's, the bride was three months at Ayre & Sons Music Department. Her mother belonged to Bay Roberts, the daughter of the late Samuel CHARD, Coley's Point.
Friday, February 16, 1923	Mr. JONAS BARTER, of St. John's, so well known by many here, met with a serious accident recently. He was standing near a horse on Harvey & Co.'s wharf, when one of the animals kicked out and struck him with both hoofs. The kick left him unconscious and in this condition he was rushed to the hospital. It will be remembered that Miss Mabel Barter, taught in the S.A. School here some years ago.
	Wedding Bells - A very pretty wedding was solemnized at Central Methodist Church, on Feb. 10th, when Rev. S. Baggs united in the bonds of matrimony PEARL BOWDEN BRADBURY, daughter of Mrs. and the late Joshua Bradbury, of this town, to Mr. ROBERT INKPEN HOLLETT, of Great Burin. The bride entered the church on the arm of her uncle, Mr. Wm. Bradbury. She was attended by her sister, Miss Ruby Bradbury, and Miss Susie Hollett, sister of the groom. While the groom was supported by Mr. Robert Parsons.
	There passed away on Sunday, February 11th, after a lingering illness, MARY ELLEN, relict of the late Stephen DELANEY. She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter, Veronica, two sons, Philip and Arthur, to whom the sympathy of the community is tendered. Funeral took place on Tuesday, Feb. 13th.
	There passed peacefully away on Saturday, February 10th, after a short illness, FLORENCE MARION, eldest daughter of William and Rachel FRENCH, of Country Road, aged 20 years and 7 months. The deceased had been in apparent good health until about a week before her death, when she contracted a heavy cold which hastened her end. Florrie, as she was generally known, was very bright. She leaves to mourn beside a large circle of friends, her father, mother, one brother, Max, in the United States, and one sister, Stella, at home. Her father is also away from home in the U.S.
	Died at St. John's on Tuesday, February 13th, ELIZABETH BURNHAM, relict of the late Frederick Burnham.
	The infant daughter of Mr. & Mrs. WILLIAM HARDY died of convulsions on Wednesday, February 14th.
Friday, February 23, 1923	PATRICK MULCAHY of Bay Bulls was accidentally killed at Bermuda a few days ago. The unfortunate man went to and secured work at the above place about three weeks ago. According to a message received from Hon. J.P. Hand, the body is being sent home for interment and will arrive by the next rip of the S.S. Silvia.
	Death, the destroyer of humanity, paid us a visit on Sunday, Feb. 18th, and claimed as its victim THOMAS R. DeLANEY, only surviving son of Mary and the late Capt. Richard DeLaney, of this town. (T.R. as we were fond of calling him) was a well known figure on the streets of Bay Roberts, having started work after leaving school as a telegraph messenger, learning the business during his spare hours. Upon the resignation of the then operator, he succeeded to the position, where his exceptional ability quickly brought him to the front as one of the leading telegraphers in the country. Delaney's book of Poems will also be remembered as equal to anything of this nature furnished by any local bards. About three years ago he left for Montreal, where he sought to regain his health, which was never robust. In this he failed, and 18 months ago returned home. He has since been under the tender care of his mother and aunts, Misses M.C. and E.M. Dawson, but he passed away on the above date, at the early age of 36 years. He leaves to mourn, a mother, at home, and one sister residing in U.S.A., to whom we extend sincere sympathy. His funeral took place on Tuesday, Requiem Mass being offered by Rev. Fr. Williams.
Friday, March 2, 1923	Great were the feelings of sadness on Saturday last, Feb. 24th when word was received announcing the passing of WILLIAM A. OKE, Judge of District Court, Hr. Grace. He was born at Hr. Grace in 1858, and was the son of the late Mr. Edward Oke. His life has been one of worthy of note and to his widow, (nee Miss Sophie Snow), son, Edward, the present Editor and proprietor of the Standard, and daughter Gladys, at home, the sympathy of Nfld. is expressed in this time of bereavement.
	There passed away on Monday, Feb. 26th, after a brief illness, JESSIE, beloved wife of John R. CARAVAN. The deceased had been ill but three weeks, and until the end it was hoped that recovery was possible. She leaves to mourn a husband, four children, Max, Daisy, Dorothy and Allan; also three sisters, Mrs. Isaac Mercer, Coley's Point, Mrs. J.T. Tamplin, Spokane, Wash., and Mrs. Arthur Holloway, Musgrave Town, and a large circle of friends to whom the sympathy of the community is extended.
	We regret to record the passing of Mrs. ELIZABETH BRADBURY, wife of Mr. Isaac Bradbury of Coley's Point. She is survived by her husband, an adopted daughter, Lizzie, mother and two sisters, to whom sympathy is extended.
	Once again a cloud of gloom has overshadowed Bay Roberts, caused by the passing of one of its most prominent citizens, in the person of Mr. GEORGE HIERLIHY. In June last the deceased entered the General Hospital, St. John' s when an operation for appendicitis was performed. This seemed to have been successful, for during the summer he engaged in business the same as usual. But on January 5th he was stricken again, and entered the hospital for further treatment. But medical skill was to no avail and he passed away on Friday, Feb. 23rd. The deceased was born in this town in 1884 and was the son of the late A.R. and Mary Hierlihy. Beginning business at the age of 18, the past 22 years have been years of hard climbing. A number of years ago he purchased the Ironbound Island and Long Trickle fishing property on the Labrador, previously owned by the late Capt. Isaac Mercer. The funeral took place on Sunday at the Methodist Church. He leaves to mourn his wife, (nee Nellie M. Spence), daughter of the late Capt. John Spence of Hr. Grace, also four children, Muriel, Clifford, Oscar and Marjorie, also mother, two sisters and one brother. He was also a brother-in-law of Conductor W. Pushie of the Reid Nfld. Company.
Friday, March 23, 1923	On Friday, March 16th, word was received by Bowering Bros., St. John's, that one of the crew of the sealing steamer, Viking, name GEORGE HISCOCK, of Hodge's Cove, T.B., died suddenly of heart failure on board ship. Deceased was a man about 40 years of age and leaves a wife and family.
	Dr. W.F. DAWE is now residing in Victoria, B.C., where he is practicing as a physician.
	Mr. ROBERT S. PARSONS, tidewaiter at the Customs House in Harbour Grace, brother of A.A. Parsons, Esp. Supt. of the Penitentiary, St. John's and ex-Editor of the Telegram and a former M.H.A., passed away at his residence on Tuesday, February 26th. Five daughters survive him, one of whom, Mrs. Donald Norman, resides in Lynn, Mass.
	Mr. & Mrs. CHARLES H. ST. JOHN, formerly of Harbour Grace, now living in retirement at Cambridge, Man., donated the magnificent sum of $1000.00 to the Munn Hospital Fund. Mr. St. John is now in his 93rd year. His father was once editor and proprietor of the Hr. Grace newspaper.
Friday, April 6, 1923	There passed peacefully away, at Coley's Point, on March 9th, after a short illness, HAZEL ALMA, youngest daughter of Thomas and Fannie LITTLEJOHNS, aged 18 years and 6 months.
	Died at Coley's Point on Thursday, March 22nd, after a brief illness, JOHN, son of the late James and Jane E. BOWERING, aged 61 years and 1 month. He leaves to mourn a wife, two daughters and three sons.
	Born at Wesleyville, January 12th, to Adjt. and Mrs. A.J. ROBERTS, a son.
	Mr. and Mrs. SOMERTON, wish to acknowledge the many tokens of sympathy expressed to them by kind friends and relatives during the illness of their little daughter HAZEL, who died March 26th at the age of one year and eight months.
	We regret to record the passing of Mr. JOHN BOWERING, of Coley's Point. The deceased was in apparent good health until a few days before his death on Thursday, March 22nd, the news of his passing came as a shock to the community. He leaves to mourn a wife, two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Barrett of this town, and Mrs. Adjt. A.J. Roberts of Wesleyville, three sons, Hayward, Amador and Bramwell, all in the United States, one little grandson at Wesleyville, one sister, Catherine, also four brothers, William, at home, Thomas and James, the United States and Robert in West Killdnin, Man., to whom the sympathy of the community is extended.
Friday, April 20, 1923	Obituary - In the passing of FANNY, relict of the late Samuel CHARD, we may truly say a mother in Israel is gone on Tuesday, April 10th. Over eighty years in the sea of life she had encountered many storms. She was a kind and devoted wife and fond mother of seven children, all of whom survive her but one, Emma, the eldest having died some years ago in the U.S.A. She leaves to mourn her loss, one son and five daughters viz: Mr. Joseph Chard, now at Ilack, Labrador, Mrs. George Gerrett, Botwood, Mrs. Fanny Oleson, Denmark, Mrs. John French, C. Point and Mrs. Samuel Bradbury, Vancouver, B.C., eighteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also two sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Bowering and Mrs. John Bowering, Sr., of Coley's Point. The funeral took place on Thursday, the 13th inst. from the residence of Mr. Joseph Bishop, Bay Roberts, where she has been tenderly cared for during her last illness by her daughter, Mrs. Bishop. Her remains were followed by a large concourse of people to the Methodist Church and cemetery, Coley's Pt.
Friday, April 27, 1923	Married on April 25th, at George Street Church by Rev. R.E. Fairbairn, SNOWDEN S. MERCER of Bay Roberts, to FLORENCE WHITEWAY of St. John's.
	Married at St. Mary's Church, Glace Bay, N.S., on Wednesday, April 11th , by Rev. H. Watson, FANNIE, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas MERCER of Bay Roberts, N.F., to ROBERT JAMES, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. J. MERCER of Bay Roberts, N.F.
	Died at Coley's Point, March 10th, after a lingering illness, JOHN T. LESLIE, aged 80 years. Leaving two daughters and one son to mourn their sad loss.
	In Memoriam - In loving Memory of ABRAM BOONE, who was gassed in Boston, Mas., June 15th, 1922.
	Mr. BERNARD G. MERCER of the bank of Nova Scotia, St. John's, who was in town spending a vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry N. Mercer, returned to St. John's.
Wednesday, May 2, 1923	Obituary - We regret to record the passing of a respected citizen of Shearston, in the person of Mr. JAMES HEDDERSON, on Tuesday, April 24th. His funeral took place from his late residence to the Church of England, Rev. E.M. Bishop officiating.
	Obituary - There passed peacefully away on Saturday, May 5th, one of the oldest citizens of Bay Roberts in the person of Mr. ROBERT RUSSELL. Deceased had been failing in health for the past year or two, and on May 5th, he was called to his eternal reward. The late Mr. Russell was the youngest son of the late Edward and Elizabeth Russell, and reached the ripe old age of 77. Mr. C.E. Russell, J.P., is a nephew. His funeral took place from his late residence to the S.A. Citadel, then conveyed to the S.A. cemetery.
	Drowning Accident - The Dept. of Justice has received the following message from the Magistrate of Harbor Breton, telling of a sad drowning accident at that place on Saturday last: "THOMAS STROWBRIDGE fell overboard from the schooner Dixie, Joseph Bullen, master, on Saturday evening and was drowned. No person was on board at the time and it's supposed the unfortunate man stumbled on the deck and fell over the vessel's rail as he was very feeble and practically blind. The body has not yet been recovered."
Friday, May 18, 1923	Miss ISABEL STEVENSON, of Hr. Grace, who was training as a nurse in Montreal passed away recently. Typhoid fever was the cause of her death.
Friday, May 25, 1923	Inspector-General Hutchings received a message from Bell Island Wednesday morning, conveying the sad intelligence of a fatal accident at that place the evening before. The following is the message: " A lad named SELBY GOSSE, 17 years old, son of Joseph Gosse, of Spaniard's Bay, and employed by the Company, was struck by a loaded car while riding down a hill near Nova Scotia Pier. Lad was so badly injured that he died during the night." The body was brought to his former home, Spaniard's Bay where interment was made.
	Miss ESSIE PARSONS arrived from St. John's on May 23rd and paid a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Parsons.
Friday, June 1, 1923	Obituary - There passed peacefully away on Sunday morning, May 20th, after a brief illness, MALENA, beloved wife of Benjamin NORTH. Deceased had been in fairly good health until quite recently and on Sunday the summons came for her to go to her eternal rest. The late Mrs. North was in her 73rd yr. and leaves to mourn her husband, two daughters, one of who resides in Canada, and Mrs. Mercer of this town. Also one son residing in Canada. Her funeral took place from her late residence to the Methodist Church.
	Married at Upper Island Cove on May 26th, by the Rev. E.E. Rusted. BESSIE PEPPER of Bay Roberts, to J.H. MARSHALL of St. John's.
Friday, June 8, 1923	An accident, which like two preceding ones may likely prove fatal was reported from Bell Island yesterday. The victim being HERBERT HAMMOND of Portugal Cove, who while on duty looking after some cars of ore, fell between the cars and was badly crushed. Medical aid was summoned immediately and manager Archibald and Mr. J.A. McLean did all possible to alleviate his sufferings, but he has a very small chance of recovery. This is the third accident of this nature to happen in a very short time. - News
	Mrs. E. GODDEN and baby arrived on Tuesday's train to visit her mother, Mrs. Henry DAWE.
Friday, June 15, 1923	Wedding - A very pleasant event took place at Harbor Grace on June 11th, when Mr. LOUIS A . O'BRIEN was united in matrimony to Miss MARY JONES, both of that town. The groom was supported by his brother, Mr. Jack O'Brien, while Miss Winnie Jones, sister of the bride, was bridesmaid. The honeymoon will be spent at Holyrood. Mr. O'Brien is a capable employee of the Western Union Telegraph Company and is at present stationed here.
	While walking along a narrow path near his store at 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning, June 13th, ROBERT PORTER, aged 61 of Hibbs' Cove, Port de Grave, fell over a 20 foot embankment. Dr. Pritchard was called, and at first his recovery was hoped for, but at 4 p.m. the same day, he passed away. He leaves a wife and one son to mourn their sad loss. His funeral took place on June 14th, from his late residence. This is the second accident to occur at the place mentioned within the last two months. A man named PETTEN fell over the same cliff but his injuries were not serious and he has recovered. Very much sympathy is felt for the relatives of the late Mr. Porter, it being, not more than three years ago, when his brother was accidentally killed at Sydney, N.S.
	North Sydney, N.S., June 5 - EMANUEL KEARLEY of the American fishing schooner Hazel R. Hines, died in Hamilton Memorial Hospital this morning. He was admitted on arrival from the Banks on Tuesday, suffering from pneumonia. His family lives in Fortune Bay, Nfld. His father, Capt. George Kearley, and his wife arrived this morning on the Pro Patria, but were too late to see the deceased alive.
	We are glad to learn that Mr. VICTOR PARSONS, son of Mr. Isaac Parsons, of H.M. Customs, this town, has secured a position with the Canadian National Telegraph Co., at Montreal. His brother, HUGH, who went there several years ago, is one of the most valued employees in that Company.
	Mrs. WILLIAM JAMES, of Georgetown, Brigus, died at her home on June 13th. It seems that Mrs. James lit a fire in the yard for the purpose of heating water and in moving around the fire her clothing caught. Before assistance came to her she was so badly burned that medical skill was to no avail, she passed away the following day.
	The body of Miss MARGARET LINDSAY, who disappeared at Muddy Bay, Cartwright, Labrador, last summer, arrived at St. John's on June 14th. The facts have not been made public yet and it depends upon the Justice Dept. whether they will or not. On arrival at St. John's, the remains were brought to the morgue from where they will be forwarded to Montreal for interment.
	Died at Shearstown, on June 13th, after a short illness, ELIZABETH SPARKES, widow of the late Isaac Sparkes, aged 75 years. Funeral took place this (Friday) afternoon.
	Obituary - There passed away at Coley's Point on June 12th, Mrs. ELIZABETH RUSSELL. The deceased lady was in apparent good health until stricken with paralysis at the home of her son. She leaves three sons, William, Azariah and Stephen Russell and two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Mercer of this town and Mrs. Adjt. Geo. Cooper of Toronto, Can. Also two brothers to mourn their sad loss. Interment was made in the Church of England cemetery on June 14th.
Friday, June 22, 1923	Miss LEAH BAGGS arrived from Boston, Mass. Recently and will spend the summer months with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baggs.
	Obituary - There passed peacefully away at the "Dock" on June 11th, EMMA RICHARDS, aged 24 years. The deceased young lady was suffering for eight months with consumption. She leaves to mourn, a father, mother and two brothers.
	The Ordination of Mr. NICHOLAS A. FITZGERALD, son of P.J. Fitzgerald, J.P. of Harbor Grace, takes place at Halifax on Sunday next, 24th inst. Archbishop McCarthy, of Halifax, will officiated at the Ordination Service. His many friends will be pleased to learn that Rev. N.A. Friday, June 29, 1923	Triple Drowning at Grand Falls - News of a triple drowning at Grand Falls on Wednesday, was received on June 21st. The victims were JOHN S. St. JOHN, age 47, Harbor Grace; JOHN L. WELLON, age 30, Ladle Cove; and ADAM KEAN, aged 59, Musgrave Harbor. The fatality occurred in Aspen Lake, when a rowboat in which five men sank from under them; the other two, one of whom was Mr. ROLAND GOODYEAR, the contractor, being saved. The bodies were recovered and were taken to Grand Falls, where they were prepared for burial, and will be forwarded to their home for interment. It is understood that all three victims were married.
	Obituary - We regret to record the passing of Mr. JOSEPH CRANE of Crane's Brook, on Sunday, June 17th. The deceased has been a sufferer for more than a year. Despite a visit to the General Hospital last year the end came on Sunday last. The late Mr. Crane was in his forty-second year and leaves a wife, children, mother, brothers and sisters to mourn their sad loss. Interment took place at the C.of E. cemetery on June 19th.
	Died on Saturday, after a lingering illness, ISAAC MERCER. He was the only son of the late Samuel and Dorcas C. Mercer. One of the brave Newfoundlanders who fell in the great Beaumont Hamel Drive on July 1st, was Pte. Maxwell Mercer, youngest son of the deceased. He leaves a widow, two sons, Albert at home, Donald in Boston, Mass., three daughters, Mrs. Jas. S. Snow, of this town, Mrs. Jas. Dawe of Coley's Point, and Mrs. Herbert Caravan of British Columbia, also two sisters, Mrs. Dorcas Taylor, of this town and Mrs. Stephen Bradbury, St. John's, to mourn their loss. Funeral took place on Monday, June 25th, to the Methodist Cemetery.
Friday, July 6, 1923	A very pretty wedding was solemnized at Bonavista on June 22nd when ETHEL LOUISE, daughter of the late Magistrate, John ROPER, Esq., was united to FREDERICK GORDON BRADLEY, Esq., L.L.B., Barrister-at-Law, St. John's. The groom was supported by Dr. C. Alexander Forbes and the bride was attended by Mrs. (Rev.) Bugden as Matron of Honor. The bride was given away by her mother, Mrs. Annie Roper, M.B.E.
	Married at Freshwater, B.D.V., on Thursday, June 28th, HILDA, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob PIKE, of Freshwater, to LLEWELLYN CRANE, of St. John' s.
	The wedding of Capt. MABEL BARTER, S.A., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Barter to Captain HEBER NOSEWORTHY, took place in the S.A. Citadel, New Gower St., St. John's on July 4th. The bride looked charming in a regulation Salvation Army Uniform bearing on her arm a splendid bouquet of carnations, sweet peas and maiden hair fern. She was attended by her sister, Capt. Marion Barter, who also wore a uniform. The groom was supported by Lieut. King, and the bride's father, Sergeant Major Barter, gave her away. Captain Barter, previous to her marriage had been teacher in Salvation Army Service for fourteen years.
	Died at St. John's on July 4th, WILLIAM WATERMAN HORWOOD, aged 68, son of the late Wm. Horwood, Brigus, leaving a wife and five children to mourn their loss.
Friday, July 13, 1923	On Monday, July 9th, the remains of the late WALTER FRENCH were brought to his home at the Dock from the railway station, at Clarke's Beach. Deceased went to Boston about a month ago and was stricken with appendicitis recently and died in Hospital following an operation. He is survived by a wife, two children, mother and sister.
	Mrs. John SPENCE, mother of Mrs. Geo HIERLIHY of this town, was stricken with paralysis recently and is seriously ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. PUSHIE, St. John's.

Friday, July 20, 1923	Mrs. (Rev.) WAITE (nee Miss BELLE DAWE) arrived here from England via St. John's on Sunday night last, Mrs. Waite has been living in England for a number of years, and came now to visit her mother, Mrs. Henry Dawe.
	The sad news reached here this (Friday)morning that Mrs. Ralph PARSONS (nee Miss WINNIE KEEFE), had passed away in Boston, Mass. Mrs. Parsons was the daughter of Mr. Peter Keefe, of Coley's Point. We learn the body will be brought home for interment.
	Obituary - At Forteau, Straits of Belle Isle, after a comparatively short illness, there passed away, ELFREDA, beloved wife of Alfred BUCKLE, aged 33 years. Deceased leaves a husband and six children to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother; also two brothers, two sisters and aged father and mother, George and Elizabeth BARNEY (nee GOSSE of Spaniard's Bay) now residing at Lance au Loup.
Friday, August 10, 1923	The wedding of Miss FLORENCE DWYER, eldest daughter of Sergt. and Mrs. A Dwyer of this town to Mr. B.B. STAFFORD of St. John's, was solemnized in Boston recently. Miss Dwyer has been nursing in Boston for about seven years. Harbor Grace Standard, July 20.
	Obituary - There passed away at Coley's Point, on June 23rd, SARAH FRENCH, wife of the late Wm. French. The deceased for the past six years had been confined to her home suffering from heart trouble. She leaves to mourn their sad loss three sons, Elijah, John and William, of Coley's Point, and two daughters, Mrs. Israel Dawe and Mrs. Mary Ann Tucker, of Port de Grave and 8 grandchildren.
	Mr. James Baggs received a message from Vancouver, B.C. on August 8th, stating his eldest sister, Mrs. JAMES RUSSELL, formerly of Bay Roberts, had passed away. The late Mrs. Russell (nee Miss MARY A. BAGGS) left here about 15 years ago. She leaves her husband, five brothers and one sister to mourn their sad loss.
Friday, August 17, 1923	Mr. & Mrs. FRED BURGE, of Cambridge, Mass., arrived here during the week and will remain for some time. Mrs. Burge (nee Miss LIZZIE RUSSELL) has not visited her old home since she left with her parents some fifteen years ago.
	Miss ANNIE FRENCH, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Isaac French, who for some time has been nursing in a Boston Hospital, is home spending a vacation with her parents.
	A very pretty wedding took place recently at the home of Mrs. William KENNEDY, Western Bay, when her daughter, ELLA, was united in matrimony to Mr. JOHN EVANS, of Adam's Cove. The bride was given away by her brother, Mr. Stan Kennedy. Both bride and groom were unattended.
	Mr. ABRAM MORGAN, of Coley's Pt., celebrated his 82nd birthday on August 12th. His son, Mr. George Morgan, of St. John's, spent the day with him.

	Married on August 22nd at the C. of E. Cathedral, St. John's, by the Rev. J. Brinton, IRENE, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry CAVE, to ARTHUR, son of Mr. & Mrs. John GREENLAND.
	Died on Friday, August 17th, after a lingering illness, THOMAS BROWN, aged 88. Leaving to mourn a wife, one daughter and one adopted son. Funeral took place on Saturday to the C. of E. cemetery.
	Died suddenly on Tuesday, August 21st, ELLEN, widow of the late William MERCER, of Beachy Cove. The end came suddenly at the home of her son, William Mercer. Deceased was in her 80th year. She leaves to mourn their sad loss three daughters and two sons, Charles and William. Interment took place to the C. of E. cemetery on Wednesday.
Friday, August 31, 1923	Died on Monday, August 30th , after a short illness, JANE, wife of William RUSSELL, Coley's Point. She leaves to mourn a loving husband, one son, Arthur, one brother, father and mother.
	On Wednesday, August 29th, a sad drowning accident occurred at Topsail, when Mr. HERBERT PIKE, an employee of the Royal Stores Ltd., St. John's, was seized with a cramp while swimming, and sank before a rescue party could reach him. The deceased was a member of the Royal Stores Swimming Club, whose members were holding an outing at Topsail on Wed. A set programme had been arranged for the afternoon entertainment, but shortly after arriving, a number of them, including Pike, decided to go for a swim. There was a heavy lop and the water was quite chilly. The victim, despite the entreaties of his comrades, started to swim for a boat anchored a quarter of a mile distant. He reached the boat, swam around it, and was returning to the shore when he apparently was seized with a cramp. His cries for help were heard by those on the beach, who immediately set out in a boat toward the spot where he was last seen, but the body did not rise. Within half an hour a motor boat was procured and rushed to the scene of the accident, and with the aid of jiggers the body was recovered in four fathoms of water. All the medical skills could do was done for the man, but to no avail. He is survived by a widow and two children.
Friday, September 7, 1923	Mrs. SAMUEL DAWE, 902 5th Ave., New Westminster, B.C., spent the past month here visiting her sister, Mrs. Thos. BOWERING, Country Road. Mrs. Dawe accompanied by her mother, Mrs. MARY A. RICHARDS, who spent the past two years in B.C.
	Miss EMMA DAWE, who spent some years in Toronto, engaged at journalistic and church work, has returned to Nfld., and is now staying with her parents, Capt. & Mrs. Eli Dawe, Coley's Point.
	Word was received here on Monday, September 3rd, that a fatal accident had occurred at Bell Island. Miss HILDA HORNEY, while crossing one of the tracks was struck by a runaway ore car and almost instantly killed. She was the niece of Adjt. and Mrs. Oake, S.A. of this town. Her funeral took place at Bell Island on Tuesday.
	Nurse WINNIE DAWE, of Grand Falls, is here on vacation visiting her parents, Capt. & Mrs. Eli Dawe, Coley's Point.
	Died on Thursday, September 6th, at Bareneed, after a short illness, EVELYN, daughter of John and Mary GREENLAND. She leaves to mourn father and mother, four brothers, Harry, Clarence and Fred at home, Bert in the U.S. Funeral takes place on Saturday.
Friday, September 14, 1923	Died at French's Cove, on Sunday, September 9th, ANNIE, widow of the late Jesse BADCOCK, in her 86th year. Leaving to mourn one daughter, Mrs. Jos. Neal, Spaniard's Bay, one adopted son, John Charles, and one brother, Isaac French, of this town. Funeral took place on Tuesday to the C. of E. Cemetery.
Friday, September 21, 1923	Miss Lindsay's Death - In connection with the death of MARGARET LINDSAY at Cartwright, Labrador, last summer, although nothing has yet been given out officially by the Justice Dept., rumor has it that the wounds which caused the young lady's death were self-inflicted. The cause is said to be in connection with a love affair.
	Married on Sept. 11th at the Oratory of the Sacred Heart Mercy Convent, by the Rev. Fr. Dee, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Carter, Miss ALICE M. DEE to Mr. FRANCIS J. DEVEREAUX.
Friday, September 28, 1923	A fatal accident occurred on Sept. 20th at Sydney, when HENRY PEDDLE was crushed to death in the revolving gears of a crane that he was repairing. While he was at work in a trolley on top of the No. 2 Shaw crane, the operator, ignorant of the fact that the unfortunate man was engaged at work on the crane, started the machinery, with the result that the deceased was drawn into the gears. Before his position was noticed, he was extinct. As far as can be learned the tragedy was purely accidental, as the crane operator had not been informed of Mr. Peddle's dangerous position. The late Mr. Peddle was a native of Spaniard's Bay and was 28 years of age. He is survived by a widow and one child, also father and mother, John and Elizabeth Peddle. The remains were brought to Spaniard's Bay and on Tuesday the funeral took place.

	Miss ETHEL M. EARLE, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J.K. Earle, 26 Chandler Street, was married last night to JACK DAWE of Brattleboro, Vt., at All Saint's Church. The couple was attended by Miss Florence M. Earle, sister of the bride, and Arthur Dawe, brother of the bridegroom. (The bride is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Earle, formerly of Country Road, but now residing at Worcester, Mass. And before leaving for the U.S.A. was teaching at the Country Road school. The groom is a son of Capt. John and Mrs. Dawe, of Coley's Point. Jack was well known as a hockeyist and a footballer.
Friday, October 5, 1923	A quiet but very pretty wedding was solemnized at the Church of the Holy Redeemer, Spaniard's Bay, on September 27th, when GLADYS, youngest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jesse GOSSE, was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. ARCHIBALD YOUNG CRANE, of Upper Island Cove. The bride entered the church on the arm of her brother, Augustus, who acted as father giver, Miss Hilda May Pike, of Freshwater (cousin of the bride) acted as bridesmaid.
	Locating Treasure at Badger - Five years ago, TOM JOE, a reputedly wealthy Indian trapper and fur buyer of Badger Brook, near Grand Falls, Nfld., died without leaving any trace of the whereabouts of his wealth, which is said to amount to a considerable sum of money. Search has been carried on from time to time without success by his brothers. Recently another brother of the deceased, Stephen Joe, formerly of the local reservation, but at present in St. Peter's, received a letter from a man named Coleman, living at Badger Brook, who claims to have discovered the hiding place. Stephen leaves for Nfld. tomorrow night to take up the search and states that he will not return until he has located the treasure trove. - Sydney Post, Sept. 26th

	Died at the home of his son, 31 Addison St., Chelsae, Mass., after a lengthy illness, RICHARD SPRACKLIN, of Waterville, King's Co., N.S., leaving a widow, two sons and one daughter.
	Mrs. ALLAN BRADBURY and children arrived here recently from Grand Falls, and will spend the winter with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. John DAWE of Coley's Point. Mr. Bradbury has secured a good position with the electrical contractors at Deer Lake.
	Mr. J.T. JONES, of Upper Island Cove, received a message on Sept. 26th, from his son, JOHN, which conveyed the sad news that his youngest son, ELEASER, had died at Indiana on Sept. 25th. The remains were expected to arrive on Oct. 4th.
Friday, October 12, 1923	The Deputy Minister of Justice received a message October 8th from Mr. A.S. Dubourdieu stating that a man named AUBREY KELLOWAY, of Badger's Quay, B.B., dropped dead on Friday night while attending a dance at the C. of E. schoolhouse, Port au Port.
	Passed peacefully away Monday, Oct. 8th, after a short illness, EUGENE PARSONS. Funeral took place Wed. from his late residence, 40 Victoria Street.
	Child Burnt to Death - Word of a burning tragedy was received recently from Mr. A.E. Batstone, sub-collector of Little Bay Islands. The victim is the five year old daughter of JAMES CHAPMAN. It appears that the little girl was burnt to death in the fire which burned the house and all its contents on Oct. 10th.
	Prof. SAMUEL MERCER, a native of Bay Roberts, has just recently taken up his duties as Professor of Oriental Languages in Trinity University, Toronto.
Friday, October 19, 1923	It is learned that the Newfoundlander who was swept overboard and drowned from the Nova Scotia schr General Parr when she was abandoned in the recent heavy storm was VINCENT MOLLOY, of Marystown, Placentia Bay.
	Died at Heart's Content, on the 17th inst., JAMES H. MOORE, J.P., aged 70 years.
	Accidentally killed on August 3rd, in Toronto, Canada, HUBERT H. DAWE, beloved son of Mr. & Mrs. Nathaniel Dawe, Clarke's Beach.
	Passed peacefully away on Monday, October 15th, at Belmont Sanitarium, Cambridge, Mass., after a lingering illness, VICTOR, only son of Thomas and the late Lizzie BOWERING. Deceased was 23 years of age. Remains are expected to arrive on Thursday, Oct. 25th. Funeral on Friday.
Friday, October 26, 1923	Died at Shearstown on October 21st, after a lingering illness, WILLIAM RICHARDS, aged 80 years, formerly of London, England. He leaves to mourn one son. Funeral took place to the C. of E. cemetery.
	Antigonish, N.S. Oct. 17 - THOMAS O'DONOGHUE, 18, and DAVID PETERS, 30, are dead and MORTIMER DESBARRES, 17, is suffering from painful bruises as the result of an auto accident today near St. Andrews, eight miles from here, in which the car, owned and driven by Peters, turned over, when it was steered out to avoid a puddle on the road. The three men were members of the Hazel Hill Cable Station, near Canso. O'Donoghue and Peters died at St. Martha's Hospital here where they were taken. (At least one of the unfortunate victims in this motor accident is well-known here and in the city - Mr. Peters.) He is one of the original staff of the Commercial Cable Co., in St. John's, coming in 1914, and working at the Cuckhold's Cove Station. He remained here for about 18 months, making many friends who will deeply regret his passing. From St. John's he was transferred to Canso. It is understood that he was shortly to be married.
	Mr. SAMUEL NORMAN and Mrs. ISAAC BRADBURY, of Winnipegosis, Man., Canada, arrived here on Saturday last and will remain with their parents, Mr. & Mrs. James Norman, during the winter months.
	ANTHONY HAWCO, held for trial charged with the murder of MICHAEL FEWER at Chapel's Cove on Sept. 2nd last, was committed by Judge Morris for trial before the Supreme Court at its next criminal session. The trail takes place next month.

Friday, November 16, 1923	Died at Toronto, Nov. 13th, in his 57th year, CHARLES ROBERTS, a native of Brigus, Conception Bay.
	Mr. & Mrs. JOHN SNOW arrived home on Tuesday having come from Labrador by the S.S. Miegle. Mr. Snow, for the past season, was in charge of the lighthouse at Battle Harbor.
	Miss LILY YARN, who had been visiting her sister, Mrs. S. Parsons, Coley's Point, left by Monday's train for her home in Fortune Bay.
	Died on Monday, Nov. 12th, after a short illness, BENJAMIN NORTH, aged 69 years. Leaving two daughters and one son to mourn their sad loss. Funeral took place to the Methodist Cemetery on Wed.
Friday, November 23, 1923	MICHAEL BULGER, of Flatrock, was killed almost instantly at the Dry Dock, St. John's at 10:30 on Wed. night, Nov. 21st, where he was engaged discharging machinery for the Armstrong Whitworth Co., from the Canadian Navigator. An engine had been landed on a flat car and blocked up for transshipment and Bulger was on the wharf unfastening the heavy slings, when one of them slipped and hit him severely in the stomach. He was picked up and brought to the shed where he passed away ten minutes later. The deceased was about 30 years of age and unmarried, and leaves a father, mother, one brother and two sisters. The remains were sent to Flatrock where interment took place.
Friday, November 30, 1923	Obituary- Passed peacefully away on November 25th, VERA MOREL CROSSMAN, daughter of Thomas and Minnie Crossman, 8 Prescott St., St. John's. After receiving her education, she entered the office of the Eastern Trust Co., where she worked faithfully, until ill-health compelled her to resign. The funeral took place from her home on Tuesday and then to the C. of E. Cemetery. Left to mourn are father, mother, three sisters and three brothers.
	Died on November 23rd, Hon. GEORGE KNOWLING, in his 83rd year. Funeral took place from his late residence "Thornlea" on Nov. 25th.
	Died at St. John's this morning after a very short illness, NATHAN SPARKES, in his 55th year, leaving a wife, three sons and three daughters, mother and seven brothers, three in Vancouver and four in St. John's. Deceased was a native of Bay Roberts.
Friday, December 7, 1923	Died on Thursday, Nov. 29th, at Wabana Mines, Bell Island, STELLA, beloved wife of Mark GOSSE. Deceased was in her 29th year.
	A quiet, but very pretty wedding took place at the Methodist Parsonage, on Dec. 3rd when Miss MYRA MERCER, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Reuben Mercer, Shearstown, and Mr. GILBER HIERLIHY, son of Mrs. A.R. Hierlihy, were united in the bonds of matrimony. The bride was attended by Miss Myrtle Hierlihy, sister of the groom, and Mrs. Edward Holmes, while Mr. E.J. French supported the groom.
	Mr. ROBERT LEE, of Harbor Grace is opening a moving picture show in the British Hall there.
	Capt. RICHARD GOSSE, formerly of Spaniard's Bay, entertained 350 tourists at his Sunnyside Cannery in British Columbia some time ago. He runs a model cannery and puts up salmon under the Gosse-Millerd brand.
	Miss JESSIE SHEPPARD, of Harbour Grace is here visiting her sister Mrs. (Rev.) E.M. Bishop.
	The opening of "Bennett Hall" at Grand Falls in the afternoon of Nov. 11th has a special significance for Bay Roberts. The hall is named after a former pastor of the Bay Roberts Methodist Circuit, Rev. Sidney Bennett, who is now stationed at Grand Falls, and to whose energy and enthusiasm the beautiful new church with the hall in the basement is responsible, Rev. Mr. Bennett is also President of the Conference this year. The Church, including the hall, is being built by our two fellow-citizens, Messrs. WM. THOS. And EBENEZER BOWERING, and when completed will be one of the finest churches in the country.

Friday, December 14, 1923	Fatal Accident - While engaged in the work of hauling a house by means of block and tackle, Mr. ARTHUR HAMPTON, a highly respected citizen of Portland, B.B., was struck in the temple when a hook attached to the block broke, causing instant death. He is survived by a widow and six children.
	The marriage of CLARA LILLIAN, daughter of Susannah and the late George Hy JACKSON, of Coley's Point, to Rev. H.G. TURTLE, of Little Bay Islands, son of Geo. Hy and Susannah Turtle, of Shearstown, took place at 9:15 on the night of Oct. 12th in Lewisporte Meth. Church. The ceremony was performed by Rev. W.E. Mercer, uncle of the groom. The bride was given away by Mr. J.C.Moores, operator with the Nfld. Govt. Railway at Lewisporte. The bridesmaid was Miss Hilda Mercer, cousin of the groom, while little Miss Urusla was the flower girl. The best man was Mr. W.J. Babcock, cousin of the groom. The organist was Miss Gretta Mercer. Mr. & Mrs. Turtle left by S.S. Home for Little Bay Islands.
	Passed peacefully away at St. John's on Dec. 10th, MARGARET ROGERS, youngest daughter of the late Jonathan and Sarah BUTLER, of Port de Grave. Funeral took place Tuesday from her late residence, 175 South Side.
Friday, December 21, 1923	A very serious accident occurred at Hr. Grace on Dec. 17th, when JAMES WALSH while engaged in discharging cargo on the schr. Ria, became entangled in a winch he was operating. Before assistance could be given he was knocked unconscious and sustained serious injuries. After being attended by Dr. Cron, he was rushed to the station where he was taken by train to St. John' s.

	Passed peacefully away at Coley's Point on Christmas Eve, JOHN A. BARRETT, aged 37 years. Left to mourn are a widow, mother, one brother, Robert and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Dawe, residing in the U.S. and Dorcas, at home. Funeral took place Dec. 26th to the C. of E. cemetery.
Friday, January 8, 1926	Born at the Grace Maternity Hospital on Dec. 28th, 1925, to Capt. & Mrs. W. A. MERCER, S.A., a son.
	The sudden death of Mr. JAMES POMEROY cast a gloom over the community and was a great shock to his family and friends. Mr. Pomeroy was in his 48th year and leaves a widow and four sons to mourn his loss.
	The marriage of DOROTHY, daughter of Mr. Alfred ROBERTS, to Mr. HAROLD CURNEW, took place at South River, Dec. 30th. The Rev. Whitehouse officiating. The bride was given away by her father, while her sister, Flora, was her attendant.

Friday, January 22, 1926	Died at Shearstown on Jan. 20th, JOANNA, widow of the late Moses EARLE.
	A message was received last week by the Minister of Justice, stating that a blind man named WILLIAM BENOIT, left a place called Winterhouse, late on Christmas Eve, for his home in West Bay, Bay St. George, a distance of over 3 miles. It seems that the unfortunate man was overtaken by the blizzard, which raged on that date, and he was found smothered two days later.
	On Saturday last, while duck hunting, about a mile from his home, a young man named MATTHEW BISHOP, of McCallum, accidentally discharged his gun, the load striking him in the right side and arm. From the effects of which he died a little while after. The deceased was a married man.

	Much sympathy is felt for Mr. W. GUSHUE, of Riverhead, whose son EDWARD, died suddenly in Vancouver. The late Mr. Gushue left Brigus 16 years ago. He is survived by a wife and four sons.
Friday, February 5, 1926	THOMAS CAREY, aged 73 years, was found dead in his home on Bell Island on Sunday last. Deceased was a native of Broad Cove, B.B., but had lived on Bell Island for nearly 20 years, and was employed by the B.E.S. Co. Death was supposed to be due to exposure and malnutrition.
	Mr. Nathan Babcock arrived here on Monday nights' train accompanying the remains of his grandfather, the late Mr. NATHANIEL BABCOCK, from Allston, Mass. Mr. Babcock will return to Allston shortly. Sons William J., Allston, Mass.; John C. of Bay Roberts; one daughter, Mrs. Stephen Russell, Coley's Point are left to mourn their loss.
	Died on January 24th, after a lingering illness, MOSES PARSONS, aged 79 years. Left to mourn are a widow, four sons and four daughters, Mrs. George Parsons of this town; Mrs. James Tuck, Hant's Hr., Mrs. Charles Noseworthy, St. John's and Mrs. Fred Murphy, Chelsea, Mass. Also 38 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

	Died at St. John's on Feb. 2nd, ABRAM, beloved husband of Francis SNOW, aged 54 years. Funeral takes place today to the C. of E. cemetery.
Friday, February 12, 1926	A man named MARTIN FITZGERALD, aged 35, unmarried, was drowned last Sunday by falling over the Monroe Export Co.'s wharf at the north side of St. John' s harbor. It is believed that the unfortunate man slipped on the ice on the wharf and that a sudden gust of wind blew him over.

	We record with deep regret the passing of one of the most popular young ladies of this town in the person of ETHEL, beloved daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John SEELEY, which occurred on Feb. 7th. Left to mourn are a father, mother, two sisters and one brother. Funeral took place on Monday.
	MICHAEL WALSH, of St. John's, a veteran of the Great War, ended his life by jumping through a window on the 4th story of the Kitchener Hotel, Duckworth St., where he boarded, on Feb. 9th.
Friday, February 19, 1926	The first Chinese woman to arrive in Newfoundland was Mrs. KIM LEE, who came to St. John's on Feb. 15th.
	Passed peacefully away on Feb. 12th, one of the most well known residents of Coley's Point, South Side, in the person of Mr. JACOB BISHOP, beloved husband of Elizabeth Bishop, aged 85 years. Deceased had not been ill long and the news of his passing came as a shock to all. Left to mourn are a widow, two sons, Jacob, with whom deceased resided, and George.
Friday, March 5, 1926	Brigus Briefs: Mr. DONALD WILCOX, who had been visiting here, left Tuesday for his home, Hartford, Conn., U.S.A.
	The sudden death of Mr. JOSEPH BARTLETT, who had been stricken with paralysis, came as a great shock to friends and relatives on Friday. The funeral on Sunday was the largest seen in Brigus for a long while. Much sympathy is felt for Mrs. Bartlett who is now left alone and for Mr. Will Bartlett, who is living in Canada.
	Died at St. John's, March 12, EILEEN, beloved daughter of Selina and the late John R. DAWSON, aged 21 years. Funeral takes place March 14th.
	Capt. Rideout and crew of the schooner, Hillcrest, which was lost at Red Island Head, P.B., on Wednesday evening while on the way from Lunenburg to Port Union, and who after landing at Red Island were brought by the S.S. Argyle to Argentia, joined Sunday's express at Placentia Jct. for Shoal Hr., where they will connect with the train en route to Port Union. The body of the young man, FRED RUSSELL, who died from exposure after the crew had landed from the ship, was taken along for interment at his native place. - Daily News.
Friday, March 19, 1926	The sad news became known here on Monday that Mr. ISAAC LEAR, aged 37 years, formerly of Port de Grave, had been drowned from his steamer out of Prince Rupert, B.C., on March 11th. The deceased leaves a widow and four children residing in Prince Rupert. Mrs. Isaac Snow of this town is his sister.
	Passed away March 16th at his residence, Howley Ave., St. John's, after a long illness, ARCHIBALD W. PICCOTT, aged 57 years. Deceased was born in Cupids in 1869, but spent the early years of his life in this town. His first entrance into politics was under the leadership of Sir. E.P. (now Baron) Morris. In 1908 he was elected for Hr. Grace District, he was appointed Minister of Marine & Fisheries and was re-elected for this district in 1909 and 1913. In 1917 he resigned his portfolio and became manager of the Gorton Pew Co. In 1919 he became a member of Sir. M.P. Cashin's government. From 1919-1922, he was secretary to the Shipping Board. In 1923 he joined the party led by Sir. R.A. Squires, and after his election became Minister of Public Works, for the past three years ill health has prevented him from participating in active public life. Funeral took place from his late residence to the General Protestant cemetery. Left to mourn are a widow, two sons, Max and Arch and daughter, Mrs. N.P. Hunt.

	Died April 8th, after a lingering illness, JANE, beloved wife of Samuel MERCER, aged 71 years. Left to mourn are a husband, two children, Mrs. W.F. Barrett, Point Amour, St. Belle Isle, and Mr. William J. Mercer, of this town. Also one sister, Mrs. Timothy Pike and one brother, Mr. John Snow, of this town and 8 grandchildren. Funeral takes place April 11th.
	Died April 8th, at Coley's Point, SAMUEL, beloved husband of Fannie PARSONS, aged 72 years. 	Married, Canso, March 24th. A pretty wedding was solemnized in the Baptist Church here Monday, when Miss HOPE BERYL FELTMATE, youngest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. C. Feltmate and RAYMOND WALSH NORMAN, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jas. Norman of Coley's Pt., Bay Roberts, Nfld., were united in the holy bonds of matrimony. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Evelyn Feltmate. Mr. Norman has an important position with the Western Union Cable Co. in Hammel, New York, having been transferred recently from Canso.
	Brigus: The late THOMAS BARTLETT, who was found dead in his home last week, was buried Monday in the Methodist cemetery.

Friday, April 23, 1926	A message was received on Thursday by the minister of Marine & Fisheries from Gooseberry Cove, T.B., which told of the sad drowning of two men. The message read: Sad drowning accident here today, MOSES SEWARD and grandson drowned, bodies not recovered.
	Brigus: The marriage took place at St. Mary's Church, St. John's, of Miss LILLIAN HARVEY, daughter of Mr. Albert Harvey, to Mr. HARRY PERCY, April 22nd. The bride and groom will reside here.
	The engagement is announced of Miss JENNY KING, daughter of Mr. James King, to Mr. HEDLEY DAVIS, of Freshwater.
	Obituary - Passed peacefully away at her home in Beachy Cove, on April 16th, ELIZA, widow of the late Mansfield MERCER, who predeceased her some eleven years ago. Mrs. Mercer was a daughter of the late Charles and Ann Kearley of this town. She was born at Occasional Hr., Labrador, in the busy fishing days of 1852, and would have reached her 74th birthday on June 25th. She was the mother of nine children, but only one remains to mourn her sad loss, George H. Mercer, of this town, and 13 grandchildren. The remains were laid to rest in the C. of E. cemetery, April 18th.
	Passed peacefully away on April 16th, one of the oldest residents of this community in the person of Mrs. SARAH ELMS, aged 85 years. Left to mourn are one son, William, of this town, two daughters, Mrs. Enos England, Little Ward's Hr., N.D.B.; Mrs. Lorenzo Simmons of Green's Hr., T.B. Also two sisters, Mrs. Emily Martin, St. John's, and Mrs. Selina Lane of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Friday, April 30, 1926	Mr. SAMUEL HARRIS, one of the foremost merchants of Grand Bank, Nfld., passed away at his home , in the above mentioned place, on April 20th, at the age of 76 years. The late Mr. Harris was the President of the firm of the Harris Export Co. and at the time of his death he succumbed to a third attack of paralysis. He is survived by a widow, three sons and three daughters. (There was no place mentioned.)

Friday, May 21, 1926	A tragic happening occurred here on Monday when Mr. ELI MERCER, one of our respected and esteemed citizens was found dead at his home by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Nathan Mercer and Mrs. George White, a neighbor. Deceased was out on Sat. superintending some road work, be being Chairman of the local Road Board, and conversed with neighbors on Sunday, and at that time did not complain of feeling ill. He was a sufferer for some years of heart trouble. Left to mourn are sons Azariah in Boston and Samuel in Botwood, Nfld.; two sisters, Mrs. Jonathan Bradbury of Coley's Pt. And Mrs. John Mercer of Beachy Cove. Also two brothers, Nathan and Charles of this town. Funeral took place Wednesday.
	Died May 12th, EDWARD, husband of the late Susanna SNOW, aged 82 years. Left to mourn are one daughter Mrs. Edward Wilson of Portland, Maine, and three sons, Edward, John and Abram, all residing at Country Road. Also two brothers, John and Abram Snow of Coley's Point, two sisters, Mrs. Edmund Mercer, Coley's Point, Mrs. Stephen Mercer, of this town.
	Brigus Briefs: The wedding took place yesterday of Mr. CHARLES FRY to Miss CLARA HARMON at Salmon Cove. The ceremony was performed by Rev. H.V. Whitehouse. The bride was attended by Miss Ethel Chalker, while Mr. Jack Watts did the honors of best man.
	The stork visited Mr. & Mrs. JAMES LAMB yesterday, leaving a little daughter.
	Passed peacefully away at Shearstown on April 25th, WILLIAM SNOW, aged 62 years. He was the son of the late Edward and Frances Snow. Left to mourn are three daughters, Mrs. Wm. Badcock, Shearstown, Jeanette and Fannie residing in Boston, Mass. Also three sons, Edward of Boston, Mass., William and Herbert of Shearstown.
Friday, June 4, 1926	A sad drowning accident occurred at Channel, as reported in the following message received by Inspector-General Hutchings: PAUL QUINN, 66, farmer of Searston, Grand River, was accidentally drowned on May 15th, by the capsizing of a rowboat on 'sunker', Western Passage, Channel. The body was recovered two hours later. The remains were taken home for burial.
	On May 30th, BENJAMIN FRENCH, son of the late Benjamin French of Coley's Point, died at the age of 75 years. He leaves to mourn his loss an aged wife, two sons, John, the ferryman, and Benjamin, who is settled in Port de Grave, and one daughter, Mrs. Edward Hampton, of the Dock, Bareneed, and seven grandchildren. The service was held at St. John the Evangelist Church, Coley's Point.
	Died on May 3rd, Mr. SAMUEL ROACH, passed suddenly away on board the schooner "Romaine", as the ship was entering the narrows of St. John's harbor. Funeral procession was one of the largest seen in Coley's Point in years. Left to mourn their sad loss are a widow and seven children, Samuel, Willis, and Robert, of Albany, N.Y., Mrs. Ted Garton, Wallaston, Mass, Mrs. John Mack, N.Y., Mereada and Harry at home. Also one sister, Mrs. Esau Lyons residing at Coley's Point.
	Passed peacefully way, May 5th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward Reid, 63 Pleasant St., Cambridge, Mass., CAROLINE PARSONS MERCER, widow of the late Elijah Mercer. The deceased was born in this town in 1846 and for many years made her home here. For the past three years she made her home with her daughters in Cambridge. The funeral took place May 8th from her late residence. Left to mourn their sad loss are three daughters, Mrs. Edward Reid, Mrs. P. Lashane of Cambridge and Mrs. John Bradbury of Millinocket, Me., also one son, Mr. James C. Parsons, of this town. - C.O.M.

	The wedding took place at St. John's, June 16th, of Mr. HARRY HISCOCK to Miss IRENE ROBERTS. They will be returning to Hartford, the home of Mr. Hiscock.
	Passed away at the Mass. General Hospital, Boston, ANASTATIA, beloved wife of Alfred PYE, and formerly of this town. Deceased had been living in the U.S. four years. She was brought to her native land for interment to the C. of E. cemetery here on June 13th. Deceased leaves a husband and four brothers, Magistrate Parsons of Hr. Breton, Joseph T. Parsons of Toronto, Richard of Grand Falls and Reuben of Bay Roberts.

	Died this morning after a lingering illness, AMELIA, beloved wife of Charles KEARLEY, aged 73 years. Deceased after leaving her home on March 3rd last, to visit a friend, met with an accident by slipping on the ice. It was hoped at first that the shock would not prove serious, but her condition eventually grew worse. Left to mourn their sad loss are a husband, one son, Isaac R. Kearley, of Vancouver, B.C. and one daughter, Clara, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Mosdell and Miss Lizzie Russell of this town, one brother, Mr. John Russell of Grand Falls, and one granddaughter. Funeral takes place June 27th to the C. of E. cemetery.
	Died on June 22nd after a lingering illness, aged 74 yrs, MARY A., beloved wife of Robert BELBIN, of Country Road. Left to mourn are one daughter, Annie, at home, two sons, Samuel, Country Road and William, residing in Boston, Mass., one sister, two brothers and four grandchildren. Funeral took place on Thursday to the Methodist Cemetery, Coley's Point.
	A very pretty wedding took place at Wesley Church, St. John's, on June 16th, when SUSIE LOUISE, eldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Richard Pike of Hamilton St. and JAMES. Son of Mrs. & the late George Hutchings were united in Holy Matrimony. The bridesmaids were Miss Winnie Pike and Miss May Hutchings. The groom was supported by his brother, Mr. George Hutchings.

Thomas Bowering. Also one brother, Mr. John Bowering of Coley's Pt.
Friday, July 9, 1926	WILLIAM DAY, formerly of Old Perlican and an ex-policeman, was shot and killed on July 5th by SAMUEL COISH, a clerk in P. Templeman's employ, at Coish's home at 21 Monroe St., St. John's. It is said that Coish was driven to commit the shooting through domestic troubles.
	At St. Peter's Church, Cookshire, Que, June 2nd, the marriage was very quietly solemnized of Miss OLIVE LILLIAN, only daughter of Mrs. Charles Colin Campbell LUSK of Cookshire and the late Mr. Lusk, to the Rev. WM. JAMES BRADBURY, BA., B.D., Rector of Bishop Carmichael Church, St. Alban's Parish, Montreal, third son of Mr. Wm. Bradbury of Bay Roberts, Nfld., and the late Mrs. Bradbury.
	WM. EDWARD EARLE, pioneer of Canada's Atlantic Cable Service, died at Brantford, Ontario, June 25th, in his 80th year.
	Brigus News: Rev. J. and Mrs. MEADEN accompanied by their little daughter, Barbara, left for their home in Burin after spending two weeks with Mrs. H.G. CHAFE, Mrs. Meaden's mother.
	JOHN HOUSE lost his life by drowning from the schooner Ern Max Henry at Port Saunders on July 8th. No further particulars were given.
	Mrs. ARTHUR MORTIMER and children of Detroit, Michigan, arrived home recently on a visit to Mrs. Mortimer's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Nathan MERCER.
Friday, July 16, 1926	Mrs. FRED MERCER and daughter, Dorothy, arrived here recently from Dorchester, Mass., U.S.A. and is spending a two month vacation with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Isaac MORGAN, Coley's Pt.
	Miss FLO MERCER, who has been teaching in the United Church School, Bloomfield, B.B., is here spending summer holidays with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Mercer.
	The marriage of Miss MOLLIE KENT, daughter of Head Constable James M. Kent and Mrs. Kent of Placentia to Mr. JAMES BARRON of Dunville, P.B., but for some years a resident of Boston, Mass., was solemnized on June 7th, at the Church of St. Columkille, Brighton, Mass., and at the home of the bride's aunt, Mrs. J.J. O'Conor, of Brighton.
Friday, July 23, 1926	The sudden death of Mr. ROBERT MERCER of Country Road, occurred Thursday morning while he was engaged working on the Highroads, near the Birch Hills. For sometime he has been subject to fainting spells and must have felt one of these coming on, as went some distance from his work and sat down. Shortly afterwards he was discovered by some of his fellow workmen. He is survived by his widow and several sons and daughters.
	The sudden passing of Mr. EDWIN MURRAY, the well known commission merchant of St. John's, occurred at the Central Nursing Home, Liverpool, July 22nd . Mr. Murray left St. John's on the S.S. Nova Scotia for the purpose of having a slight operation performed. The news of his death comes as a severe blow to his many friends.
	A message from Capt. Reuben Thornhill of the schooner Harold Conrad, Grand Bank, stating that ELI THORNHILL, married, of Little Bay East, had been washed overboard and drowned while the schooner was on her way to port.
	Died at Coley's Point, July 21st, HENRY DAWE, aged 88 years. Left to mourn are a brother, Mr. Joseph Dawe, Coley's Point, one sister, Mrs. J. Dawe, Dawe's Head. Funeral took place today to the C. of E. cemetery.

Friday, August 6, 1926	A message was received by the Dept. of Justice, St. John's on Wed., stating that a man named JAMES BAILEY, a 23 year old resident of Island Harbor, Fogo District, had been drowned at West Branch, Harpoon Road, near Millertown, when his canoe upset. His friend was saved. The body has been recovered.
	Two cousins, PATRICK MOORE, aged 8 years, and THOMAS MOORE, aged 13 years, were drowned while swimming in Lee's Pond, Holyrood on August 1st. The bodies were recovered.
	ALICE GILLAM, aged 17, belonging to Crabbe's, on the West Coast, was instantly killed when the speeder on which she was riding from Deer Lake to South Brook, ran into a cow and jumped the track. On the car there were also a man named ARCHIBALD BUTT, Mrs. BUTT and son, and Miss TURNER. It is not known whether they were injured or not.
Friday, August 13, 1926	Passed suddenly away at St. John's, August 10th, EDWARD WILCOX, aged 65 years. Deceased was born at this town and spent the early years of his life in the employ of C. & A. Dawe. Later he entered the coastal service with the Reid Nfld. Co., continuing with the Nfld. Govt. Co.. For 27 years he was second officer on the S.S. Glencoe, on the southwest coast service. Funeral took place on Thursday. To the sorrowing widow and five children, Mrs. C.W. Bates of Falecian, Que., Winnie, graduate nurse from Jeffery Hale Hospital, Que., Mrs. A. Burg and Jessie of St. John's and Malcolm of the Postal Telegraph service, Corner Brook, the deep sympathy is extended.
Friday, August 20, 1926	Accidentally killed at French's Cove on August 15th, EDITH, dearly loved wife of Andrew H. WOOD, aged 33 years. Left to mourn are a husband, four children, Frederick, William, Wallace and Eric, mother, father, three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Davis, residing in Boston, Eliza , at home, and Doris is on the Labrador, and two brothers, William residing in Brockdon and Garfield at home. Funeral took place August 17th to the C. of E. cemetery.
	Died today, MARY, beloved wife of Matthew FITZPATRICK, aged 77 years. Left to mourn their sad loss are a husband and one daughter, Bride. Funeral takes place August 22nd.
	Passed peacefully away at his late residence, Coley's Point, July 21st, HERBERT, beloved son of John and Fanny KELLY. Left to mourn the loss of a loving son and brother are father, mother, two brothers, Arthur and Allan , and two sisters, Mrs. Wm. A. Caravan and Mrs. John Sparkes.
Friday, August 27, 1926	FRANK DOMNIE, aged 32 years, married, of Belleoram Reach, was drowned from on board the schooner Warren M. Colp, Capt. B. Keeping, about 2 miles off Cape Bonavista on August 25th. The schooner was bound here from White Bay with a load of lumber and logs for Wm. Dawe & Sons, and arrived here Thursday. Domnie was at the wheel a short while previously and being relieved by Albert CLUETT, he went forward on the lookout, Capt. Keeping was also on deck at the time. It is not known whether the unfortunate man had a stroke of paralysis or something similar. He was not missed for about 15 minutes, and by that time the vessel had gone about half a mile. She was immediately "brought to" and a search was made, but to no avail. Deceased is survived by a wife and three children.
	A very pretty wedding took place at Port de Grave, August 18th, the contracting parties being WINNIE DAWE and Mr. HARRY GREENLAND of Bareneed.
	The angel of death visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. George BADCOCK, French's Cove, May 7th and summoned their little daughter, EDITH, aged 14 years. The deceased was taken suddenly ill with brain fever and death followed shortly after.
	Passed peacefully away at St. John's on August 21st, ZIPPORAH SNOW, aged 77 years, daughter of the late Abner Snow of Bay Roberts, and beloved wife of the late Constable John T. BUTLER, leaving three daughters, Mrs. W.J. Green of Watervlict, N.Y., Mrs. J. Brown, Newtonville, Mass., Mrs. Sidney Melbourne of East Longmeadow, Mass., and five sons, Capt. Allen , of Port Union, Rev. W. R. of Musgravetown, John F. and Jesse H. of Roxbury, Mass., and James at home. Funeral took place August 24th from her late residence, 54 Lime St.
	On Tuesday last, while visiting the C. of E. cemetery at St. John's, in company with her mother, ANNIE, the four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. BOUTCHER, lost her life as a result of a headstone falling upon her. The stone was loose for sometime and as the little girl ran along and touched it, it fell killing her instantly.
	On Thursday last week, Rev. Brother SHERIDAN of Mount Cashel Orphanage, lost his life as a result of a collision between the car in which he was seated and a horse and long cart, the accident occurred at the junction of New Gower and Springdale St. The horse and motor car met in a head on collision.
	Born to Mr. & Mrs. Hector DAWE, Allston, Mass., August 20th, 1926, a girl.

Friday, September 3, 1926	On August 30th, the sad news became known that Sir MICHAEL CASHIN, K.B.E. had passed suddenly away at his home Cambroil, Circular Rd., St. John's, shortly after leaving his office on Water St. He was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Richard Cashin and was born at Cape Broyle, Sept. 29th, 1861. He leaves a widow, one daughter, Mrs. Hon. C.J. Fox, three sons, Mr. Peter Cashin, M.H.A., Lawrence of Cashin & Co., Dr. Martin of Royal Victoria Hospital, Montreal. His funeral took place Sept. 1st. The remains were interred in Belvedare Cemetery.
	Mrs. A MORTIMER and three children, Joyce, Freddie and Max left here on Tuesday for her home in Detroit, Mich., after spending two months with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Nathan MERCER, Mercer's Cove.
	Passed away August 28th, at his late residence, Forest Rd., St. John 's, JOHN MAUNDER, the well-known tailor of that city, in his 66th year. Deceased had been in poor health for several months past and was recuperating after an attack of pneumonia when he suffered a relapse. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.
	Died at her home, Dock, C. B., Aug 30th, 1926, SUSANNAH B., widow of the late Capt. James LACEY, in her 77th year. Her husband, five sons and one daughter predeceased her. Left to mourn their sad loss are one daughter, Mrs. J.V. Butler, St. John's, and three sons, William A., Worcester, Mass., Gilbert L., Cranbrook, B.C, Donald J., Washington, D.C., and 8 grandchildren. Funeral took place Thursday, 2nd instant. Interment St. Mark's Church cemetery, Bareneed, C.B.
	On Friday last a fire of unknown origin destroyed the home of George PORTER, at Long Pond, near Manuels, and SAMUEL, his eight year old son, was burnt to death. At 2 a.m. the mother was awakened by the smell of smoke, the house by that time was a mass of flames, Ronald, aged 16, rescued his mother and two younger brothers, by getting them through the window, he then made several heroic efforts to reach his brother, Samuel, but without success. He is at present in the General Hospital slowly recovering from his injuries. Mr. George Porter is an employee of the W. I. Bishop Co. and was away from home when the tragedy occurred.
	Mr. FORD BROWN, who has resided in Boston for the past three years, arrived here on August 30th, on a visit to his mother, Mrs. William Snow, Coley's Point, who is ill.
Friday, September 10, 1926	Mrs. IRVING W. HALL, who has been here for sometime visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. KEEFE, left for her home at Springfield, Mass. She was accompanied by her sister, Miss Irene Keefe.

	August 5th, a very pretty wedding took place at the West Toronto Church when Miss IRENE PARKE, daughter of Mrs.L. Parke became the bride of Mr. WILLIAM G. WOOD, younger son of Mrs. and the late A.J. Wood, of this town.
Friday, September 17, 1926	Mrs. Bernard Fitzpatrick received a message recently informing her that her mother Mrs. Stephen ENGLISH had passed away at her home, Branch, St. Mary's, after a short illness.
	We regret to record the sudden death of Mrs. FLORENCE BATES who passed away Sept. 10th, at the home of her mother, Mrs. Edward WILCOX, Hamilton Ave., St. John's. Mrs. Bates came to St. John's a few weeks ago, shortly after the death of her father, the late Edward Wilcox. While she did not enjoy her usual good health, her death was most unexpected. The deceased lady was married six years ago to Mr. C.W. Bates, a prominent lumber merchant of St. Felicien, Que., who is now on his way to St. John's, their little son, David, accompanied his mother here.
	The wedding of Miss VERA CROSBIE, daughter of Sir John and Lady Crosbie, and Mr. A. B. PERLIN, son of Mr.& Mrs. I. F. Perlin, was celebrated at Nashville, North Carolina, on Sept. 11th. The ceremony took place at the Methodist Episcopal Church and was performed by Rev. Dr. Chappel. The bride was given away by Dr. Colby, an old friend, who attended her during her illness a few years ago. The wedding reception was held at the home of Mr. & Mrs.Devereaux.
	Mrs. H. BOWERING arrived from Rosalindale, Mass. Mrs. Bowering was formerly Miss JULIA FRENCH of French's Cove. This is her first visit to the old hometown in 25 years.
Friday, September 24, 1926	Obituary - On the 12th of Sept., passed peacefully away to her eternal reward, Mrs. SARAH J. FRENCH, wife of the late Thomas French of Bay Roberts. She spent the latter part of her life in Boston, Mass., visiting her daughter Mrs. Samuel S. Pike, of Everett. It was during her stay in Boston that Mrs. French began to discover her health was fast becoming impaired, and her physician ordered her to hospital for surgical treatment forthwith, having diagnosed her case as cancerous. Mrs. French never recovered. To mourn her loss is one son, Mr. Albert French of Bay Roberts and three daughters, Mrs. Rev. Robert H. Mercer, of Britannia, Mrs. Samuel S. Pike, of Boston, and Mrs. William Norman of Bay Roberts, Mrs. Jethro Norman having predeceased her mother by several years. She was laid to rest in the C. of E. cemetery at her hometown, besides her late husband.
Friday, October 1, 1926	Died at Antigonish, N. S., EDNA, beloved wife of Robinson PEET, of the Western Union Cable Staff, Canso, and only daughter of Moses and Caroline Hopkins, of Heart's Content, aged 24 years. Funeral took place in Heart's Content, Sept.28th.
Friday, October 8, 1926	Master HARRY FRENCH, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles French, left for Halifax via St. John's recently, to reenter the School for the Deaf and Dumb. This is Harry's last term at that institution.
	Died on September 25th, GEORGE, infant son of Myrtle and Augustus DAWE.
	Died at Coley's Point, Oct. 5th, at the home of her son, William Lamb, MARY ANN MOORE, age 97 years. Left to mourn their loss are one son, William and two daughters, Mrs. I. Kinsella, and Mrs. James Bishop, both of Coley's Point. Funeral took place to the Methodist Cemetery, Bareneed.
	HAROLD NORMAN (blind), son of Mr. Samuel Norman, of Jethro, went to St. John 's recently to enter the Industrial School, where he will learn a trade. Harold's entry to this school was secured through the efforts and interest of Mr. C.E. Russell, M.H.A.
	The trial of the Esquimaux woman, Mrs. JULIANNA TUTTU, who was charged with the murder of her husband was concluded in the Supreme Court on Thursday. After 20 minutes of deliberation, the jury announced the verdict "Not Guilty". The accused was thereup discharged.
	St. Mary's Church, last Thursday, was the scene of a very pretty wedding, when Miss MARGARET BISHOP, daughter of Sergeant and Mrs. Bishop was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Mr. FRANK J. BAGG, of the firm of Bagg Bros. The bride was attended by Miss Augusta Bagg, sister of the groom, as maid of honor, and Miss Myrtle Bishop, sister of the bride, as bridesmaid. The groom was supported by Mr. Eric Bishop, brother of the bride.
Friday, October 15, 1926	A woman named Mrs. JOSEPH BRIAND, of Port au Port on the West Coast, while on a visit to Sydney, C.B., was stroke by a motor car at that place and died shortly after. The driver of the car was arrested but the coroner's jury announced the verdict of "not guilty".
Friday, October 22, 1926	SAMUEL COISH, who was charged with the killing of WILLIAM DAY, at St. John's on July 5th last, was found "not guilty" by his juror when the case concluded before Mr. Justice Kent, on October 19th. The announcement was greeted with applause in the courtroom, and hundreds cheered as the prisoner was released.
	Mr. WILLIAM TAYLOR, of St. John's, arrived here recently on a visit to his sister, Mrs. George Bursell, "Floraldale".
	A double drowning fatality in which two young men, ISAAC CHARD, aged 16, and ARCHIBALD FUDGE, aged 23, lost their lives, occurred on the Labrador. On Sat. Inspector General Hutchings had a message from Acting Sargeant Simmonds, who reported the accident as having happened at Cape Ailik, Oct. 9th, the cause being the upsetting of Chard's motor boat. A somewhat similar message was received by the Dept. of Justice from Mr. Wornell, J.P., with the additional information that Mr. Joseph Chard, father of the deceased, Isaac, found wreckage on the bill of the cape, on the evening of the accident, and identified it as a part of the motor boat. It has been impossible to make a search for the bodies, owing to the fact that a gale of wind is raging, with a heavy sea. Isaac Chard is a son of Mr. Joseph Chard of Coley's Point, but who has been residing on the Labrador for a number of years. Mr. Isaac Sparkes of Bay Roberts West is a grandfather of the deceased young man.
	A young man named AUGUSTUS MORGAN, aged 26 years, of Seal Cove, C.B., was found dead on Monday, with an exploded gun nearby. Deceased was shooting partridge and setting muskrat traps, and it is thought his gun fell and discharged the load in his side.
	Liverpool, N.S., Nov. 11th- ROBERT NORMAN, whose serious illness from a stoke of paralysis, had been reported here, passed away at the Canadian Sick Seaman's Hospital, where he had been taken at the time of his seizure. Mr.Norman was about 21 years of age, and had been fishing out of this port in the schooner, Charles L., he was a native of Nfld., and efforts are being made to trace relatives. Interment will take place in the Baptist Cemetery today.
	The body of a young man named WILLIAM GEORGE MENCHIONS, was brought to his home at Bishop's Cove, by the Meigle. Capt. Burgess making a special call at that port. The deceased young man was one of a fishing crew at Horse Harbor, Labrador, and his death was caused by the accidental discharge of a gun. We learn that while a companion was loading a gun in the stage, the cartridge became jammed and in forcing up the breech, it hit the cap, causing the gun to explode. The charge entered Menchions leg, at first it did not appear serious. Soon after, at the advice of relatives, the young man went to Indian Hr. Hospital, where the nurse did all possible for him, but the doctor was attending a sick patient up the bay. He was the son of Josiah Menchions of Bishop's Cove, he was 23 years old and married to the former Miss Sarah Smith. He leaves to mourn his wife and two children, father, mother, three sisters, two living at Bishop's Cove and one living on the Labrador with her father, and two brothers, one at Boston, the other with his father at Labrador. He was interred in the C. of E. cemetery.
	The funeral of Mr. P.J. SUMMERS, Dept. Minister of Justice, who passed away Oct. 10th, took place from his late residence, Freshwater Road, St. John's, to Belvedere Cemetery.
Friday, October 29, 1926	Died at Harbour Grace, Oct. 19th, JOHN THOMEY, of H.M. Customs, aged 70 years, left to mourn are a widow and two daughters. Deceased was the son of the late Captain Henry Thomey, the well known seal and fish killer of his day.
	JOHN BUNGAY, of Fortune Bay, was killed instantly on Oct. 3rd ,when the motor car in which he was driving with three other young men, was struck by a Canadian National Railway train, on a level crossing about 40 miles from Halifax, N.S. Only the driver of the car escaped.
	Died at Bonne Bay on August 2nd, THOMAS W. ROSE, aged 61 years. Deceased was a native of Brigus, but for many years has done business as a merchant in Bonne Bay, and on the Labrador.
Friday, November 5, 1926	Died, Nov. 1st, SUSANNA, wife of the late Simon MERCER, aged 73 years. Left to mourn one son, John, and several other relatives. Funeral took place Thursday to the C. of E. Cemetery.
Friday, November 19, 1926	We regret to learn that HARRY FRENCH, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles French, of this town, died from blood poisoning, at the Halifax School for the Deaf and Dumb, the early part of this week. This was Harry's final year at that institution, he having completed his course. His remains will arrive here tomorrow.
	Died at Vancouver, B.C., Oct. 22nd, HERBERT CARIVAN, son of Mary and the late John Carivan, formerly of this town, and husband of Catherine (Kitty) Carivan. Deceased left this town about 19 years ago, and since that time has made his home in the West. In that period, the late Mr. Carivan enjoyed a fair amount of prosperity. As a builder he was looked upon as a master of his trade. Two years ago he received a fall, the effects of he has suffered ever since. On the 23rd, a message to relatives in this town conveyed the sad news of his passing, mother Mary Carivan. Left to mourn are a widow, four brothers, William and Allen, of Vancouver, B.C., Elijah at Lushes Bight, N.D.B., Thomas, Long Beach, California, and three sisters, Mrs. John Elms of this town, Mrs. John Picinich, Jersey City, N.J., Mrs. John Rankin, Glace Bay, N.S.
	The Church of St. John the Evangelist, Coley's Point, was the scene of a very pretty wedding, Nov. 17th, when Miss HILDA N. NORMAN, only daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Norman, Coley's Point, was united in bonds of Holy Matrimony to Capt. LEONARD TRETHEWAY STICK, son of the late James R. and Mrs. Stick, St. John's.
Friday, November 26, 1926	Died on Nov. 24th, HAROLD, darling child of Harold and Mina TIPPLE, aged 6 days.
	Birth on the 19th inst. to Mr. and Mrs. FRED POMEROY, a baby girl.
Friday, December 3, 1926	Died Dec.3rd, JOHN BRENNAN, aged 82 years. Left to mourn are a widow, three sons, Walter and Augustus in the U.S., and Mark, at home, three daughter, Mary, Rose, and Mrs. Patrick Delaney, all at home. Funeral takes place from his late residence, Dec. 5th.
	The many friends of Mr. EVERETT H.B. WILLS, both in the city and throughout the country will learn with sincere regret of his passing , which occurred at his late residence, Gower St., St. John's, on Dec. 1st. Left to mourn are his widow, nee Alicia Bridge, daughter of the late Capt. and Catherine Bridge and ten children, Laura, wife of Rev. W.E.R.Cracknell, Hattie, wife of Capt. Edward Randell, of the Canadian Govt. Merchant Marine, and now living in St. John, N.B., Edith, who lives with Mrs. Randell, and Misses Ada, Olive, Ena, Mildred, Grace and Blanche, at home, also one son, Edward,at Queen's College.
	Brigus Briefs: The funeral of the late Mrs. BELINDA WHALEN, took place at the United Church, Nov. 30th . The deceased was 92 years old. Left to mourn is a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Gushue.

Friday, December 10, 1926	The schooner, Ella M. Rudolph, Capt. Eleazer Blackwood, met disaster Dec. 6th , near Catalina, in the southeast blizzard which raged in that section. The vessel with the Capt., his sons, Henry, Albert and Duke, four other men and a woman, left St. John's for Greenspond at 6:30 Monday, and the following morning the news of the disaster was learned from Duke Blackwood, the sole survivor. The sturdy ship was dashed to pieces on the rocks, Mrs. Blackwood, the captain's wife, and child, who were in St. John's, left by train the morning the vessel left. This is another terrible tragedy of the sea which has befallen the citizens of Greenspond and which has cast a gloom over the whole country.
	A man named ELI HARRIS, of St. John's, had both legs paralyzed as a result of falling into the hold of the S.S Siam City, at A. Harvey & Co.'s premises. The unfortunate man had worked for a number of years at the dock as a general service engineer.
	Born at Twillingate, Dec. 5th, to Mr. and Mrs. K. M. BATTEN, a daughter.
	Died Nov. 3oth, at Harbour Grace, GEORGE ASH, aged 84 years. Left to mourn are two sons and three daughters. Funeral took place on Thursday to the C. of E. cemetery.
	The funeral of the late Mrs. REUBEN DAVIS, took place to the United Church cemetery at Hr. Grace, Saturday last. The deceased lady had left the United States about two years ago and was living with her sister, Mrs. Henry Andrews, hoping to regain her health in her native country. Upon his return from his work at Munn's Meal Plant, at 6 a.m. Thursday morning, Mr. Andrews discovered his sister-in-law missing from his home, the search resulted in finding the body, lightly clad in the beach east of Brown's Hill. Dr. Cron pronounced death due to drowning. Left to mourn are a husband, sister, with whom she resided, three brothers, Rev. William Webber, and Messrs. Selby and Edgar Webber, all in the U.S.
Friday, December 17, 1926	Married at St. Patrick's Church, Dec. 8th, BESSIE DAWSON, daughter of the late William and Agnes Dawson, of Bay Roberts, to JAMES RYAN, son of Martin and Ellen Ryan, of this city.
	The body of MARY J. ABBOTT, the only woman who was drowned, when the Ella M. Rudolph was lost last week at Brook Cove, North Head, Catalina, has been found and sent to her home at Hare Bay for burial.
	Bareneed: We congratulate Mr. and Mrs. J. BRADBURY, on the birth of a daughter.
	A message received from New York reports that Mr. BEN BUFFETT, former resident of Grand Bank, was killed on Tuesday last in a motor accident. The deceased is a nephew of Mr. G. A. Buffett, and son of the late Benjamin Buffett, who passed away more than forty years ago. The victim of the accident left his home at Grand Bank twenty years ago to enter Mount Allison, where he secured his B.A. He then went to New York where he took up law and attained considerable practice, being a commissioner of the Supreme Court of Nfld., he handled all the business of the local authorities in the states. A widow survives him.
Friday, December 24, 1926	Died at French's Cove, Dec. 21st, JEMIMA, widow of the late Edward SPARKES, aged 84 years. Left to mourn are two sons and three daughters. Funeral took place Dec. 23rd to the Methodist cemetery.
	Bareneed notes: The funeral of the late WILLIAM J. CURNEW who passed suddenly away on Tuesday evening, took place Dec. 16th, to the C. of E. cemetery.
	Passed away Monday last, at St. John's, Mrs. JOHN PRATT. Fanny Pitts Pratt was born in St. John's, the daughter of the late Capt. William Knight. She married in 1877 the late Rev. John Pratt , of Barnord Castle, England, who labored very successfully for many years in connection with the Newfoundland Methodist Conference. Left to cherish the memory of a sainted mother are four sons and three daughters, James C., and Calvert C., of St. John's, Professor E.J. of Toronto, and Arthur M. of Liverpool, Lottie (nee Mrs. George Harris of Grand Bank), Florence and Nellie of St. John's, two brothers also remain, Messrs. Edward and Arch Knight, both of St. John's.
	With sudden tragicness the news of Mr. GEORGE ACKERMAN's death came as a severe blow to his family. The deceased in apparent good health, had Saturday morning gone to the store for potatoes, and was had been found dead a short time later. Death was due to heart failure. He leaves a wife and seven children (who are away in the States), to whom we extend our sympathy.

	Died at Heart's Content on Dec. 27th, GEORGE J. YOUNG, aged 69 years, leaving three sons, three daughters.
	A message was received today by Mrs. Wilfred Dawe, stating that EILEEN ROBERTS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Roberts, had died Dec. 30th, at Corner Brook, after a lingering illness.
