Harbour Grace Court of Sessions Monday, May 8, 1815
Present: Wm Lilly, Esq. & The Rev. F.H. Carrington King James Knot John Barrett Patrick Collins Edw Fitzgerald Wm Harrington against John Butler This was a Complaint brought before the Court of Petition stating that about Eleven O’Clock last Evening – Defendant came to the Plaintiffs’ Houses and behaved in a riotous manner – cursing heinously and threatening the lives of the major part of them. The parties being before the Court it appeared on the oath of Edw Fitzgerald, Patrick Collins & John Barrett that the Defendant was guilty of the charge. The Court then questioned the prisoner at the Bar concerning the above behaviour – replyed (sic) that he did not know what he had done, being at that time in a state of intoxication. Judgment that said Butler do find security for keeping the peace Twelve Months from this date himself in Thirty Pounds and two sureties, fifteen pounds each, to pay a fine to the King of Five pounds and other charges attending the suit or to remain in goal until this Judgment is complied with – after reading the above Judgment the Defendant could not find Security when the Court ordered the Prisoner again to goal. Court adjourned until the 18th Inst. Monday, May 10, 1815 Present: Wm Lilly, Esq. This day security being given before William Lilly, Esq., for the Prisoner, who was committed on last Monday by two sufficient sureties, fifteen pounds each and himself Thirty Pounds, when the Prisoner took his oath that he would not drink any liquor for one Twelve Month and also said that he hoped his conduct for the future would be so as to give no reason to complain of him to his Worship anymore—when he was dismissed.
