PROB 11/540/333. 18 June 1714. Will of Anthony Varder, Mariner of Bedminster, Somerset.
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. I Anthony Varder of Bedminster in the County of Somerset, Mariner, being sick and weak in body but of sound perfect and disposing mind and memory, Thanks be to God for the same. And considering and being well assured of the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof, I do hereby make this my last Will and Testament in writing and in manner and form following: First and principally I commend my Soul to Almighty God, hoping through the merits, death, passion, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ my Saviour and Redeemer, after this painful life ended, to inherit everlasting Life. And my Body I commit to the Earth, to be interred at the discretion of my Executor hereinafter named. And as touching my wordly goods and Estate which God hath bestowed on me, I give devise and bequeath thereof as followeth. Imprimis: I give devise and bequeath unto my Son Anthony Varder all that Messuage or Tenement with all and singular the appurtenances thereto belonging, situate in the College Green in the City of Bristol, and wherein James Taylor Clarke doth now inhabit and dwell. To hold unto him the said Anthony Varder his Executors Administrators and Assigns, for and during all my Term and Interest therein. Item: I give devise and bequeath unto my said Son Anthony Varder All that my Plantation in Porta Grave in Conception Bay in Newfoundland to hold unto him the said Anthony Varder his heirs and Assigns forever. Item: I give devise and bequeath unto my said Son Anthony Varder all those four Messuages or Tenements with the Gardens, Outhouses, Courts, pavements, and all and singular their and every of their rights, members, and appurtenances, thereto belonging, or in any wise appertaining, situate and standing and being in the East Street of Bedminster; and which are now in the several Tenures or occupations of William Smith, Joseph Giles, Anthony Varder, and John Clarke. To hold unto him the said Anthony Varder, his heirs and Assigns forever. But it is my Will and I do hereby declare it so to be, that my Wife Sarah Varder shall enjoy and possess for and during the Term of her life. All the Tenement wherein John Clarke doth dwell and also the little Garden Plot within the Garden Door. Item: I give and devise and bequeath unto my loving Wife Sarah Varder All my Estate Term and interest of in and to, all that Messuage or Tenement with the appurtenances thereof belonging situate standing and being in the College Green in the City of Bristol, and which is now in the Tenure or occupation of Mrs. Jane and Mrs. Ann Aldworth, or one of them. Item: I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Ann Neck all that my Plantation in Bay Roberts in the Bay of Conception in Newfoundland, to hold for the Term of her life and from and after her decease; I give devise and bequeath the said Plantation unto my Grandson John Varder, to hold to him the said John Varder, his heirs and Assigns forever. But I charge the said Plantation with an Annuity or yearly payment of Six Pounds per Annum unto Elizabeth Brady, my daughter, and Wife of Jacob Brady of the City of Bristol, Cooper. Item: Whereas I have in this my last Will and Testament given devised and bequeathed unto my Son Anthony Varder All that my Plantation in Porta Grave, in the Bay of Conception in Newfoundland, to hold to him his heirs and Assign forever, I do hereby charge the said Plantation with the Annuity and yearly payment of Four Pounds current money of Great Britain unto Mary Baker, daughter of my Son in Law Edward Baker; for and during the Term of her life. Item: I give unto my grandchildren William Davis, Anthony Varder, Anthony Neck, John Varder, William Brady, Mary Jones & Ann Jones, to each and every of them five Shillings apiece, to be paid by my Executor in three Months after my decease. Item: I give unto Alexander Varder, Son of my said Son Anthony Varder; the life-sum of five Shillings to be paid as aforesaid. Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving Wife Sarah Varder the use of all my household stuff, household goods, and implements of household stuff, Linens and Wools, Beds and Bedding and Plate, and everything of Indoor and Outdoor Goods, during the Term of her life; and after her decease I give and bequeath unto my said Son Anthony Varder every part and parcel thereof to his own Sole use. And lastly all the rest of my goods and chattels, rights and credits, moneys, securities for moneys, real and personal estate whatsoever, not herein before by me given and bequeathed after my Debts legacies and funeral Expenses be paid and discharged; I do hereby give devise and bequeath unto my Son Anthony Varder, whom I make and hereby ordain and constitute, whole and sole Executor of this my Last Will and Testament; and do revoke all former Wills by me at any time heretofore made. In Witness whereof, I have to this my Last Will and Testament containing Five Sheets of Paper, to the first Sheet Set my hand and to the last Sheet Set my hand and Seal, this fourth day of April in the Twelfth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Anne, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland. Signed, Sealed, published and declared by the Testator Anthony Varder to be his Last Will and Testament, in the presence of us who subscribed our names hereto as Witnesses in the Testator's presence.
