The Annual Examination of the above School took place on
Friday last, and we were much pleased to observe the deep interest
manifested on the occasion by the presence of so large an assemblage of
our leading citizens - the parents and friends of the pupils.
This School was opened here some six years ago under the management of Miss Fleming - a Teacher distinguished for her high attainments, as well as conscientious and unwearied diligence in the training of youth; and under her care it soon rose into public favour and became known, indeed, far and wide as the Model School of Newfoundland. It has now been some two years under the supervision of Miss Archibald, and we can truthfully say that she has proved herself, in every way, a worthy successor to the former Teacher. Under her, the School, whilst continuing to sustain the high character for general efficiency which it had formerly acquired, has considerably increased in number. At no former period has the attendance of children been so large as during the term just closed; and this, together with the deep interest manifested by all who were present to witness the examination, we regard as strong testimony to the increasing hold which this useful institution is acquiring on the sympathies of the community. Speeches highly commendatory of the School were made by the Chairman of the School Trustees, John Munn, Esq., and by others who were present.
