1844 The death of the Rev.
George Baring COWAN, Minister of St. Paul's Church, Harbor Grace,
took place on Wednesday, June 12. At the funeral services the Rev.
Mr. Blackman preached a beautiful and persuasive discourse from Job,
Chapter 21, verses 23-26. A native of Bristol, he came to
Newfoundland in July. 1841, and was ordained soon after and
appointed to the mission of Burin. In 1842 he was appointed to
Carbonear, and in August of the next year, he succeeded the Rev.
G.A. Addison as the Rector at Harbor Grace. At the time of his
passing, the deceased was in his 27th year, leaving a wife and two
children to mourn their irreparable loss.
1847 Died suddenly on December 14, at the Grove, in the
75th year of her age, much regretted, Ann, relict of the late Mr.
Matthew KEARNEY, formerly a merchant of Harbor Grace. The deceased
was a daughter of the late Charles GARLAND, Esq., J.P. and Surrogate
of of this District.
1852 Died on board "Margaret Ridley", on her passage
from Brazil to New York, on February 27, Charles STERLING, age 20
years, younger son of William STERLING, Esq., of Harbor Grace, much
regretted by his parents and friends.
1852 Died the same day on board the same vessel, much
regretted, Edward PARSONS. Aged 29, son of the late Mr. Henry
PARSONS of Bears' Cove.
1852 Died on Saturday, June 5, after a lingering
illness, much lamented by his parents and friends, James, eldest son
of Mr. P. ROHAN of Harbor Grace.
1852 The remains of the late Mr. James FOX, whose
demise took place on Tuesday week (October 12) at St. John's, where
he had resided for the last several years, were conveyed to Harbor
Grace in the Steam packet on Friday evening, accompanied by a large
number of his sorrowing friends. Immediately after the corpse was
landed, the mourners were joined by the B.I.S., the Clergy, Medical
Gentlemen, and a large concourse of his friends and acquaintances,
who there- upon moved in procession to the old Catholic Church-yard,
where the last painful duty was performed to the remains of the
deceased. Mr. FOX has been a resident of the Harbor Grace for nearly
40 years, and had enjoyed the confidence of a large circle of
friends
1852 Died on Wednesday evening, October 13, in the 84th
year of her age, Emma, relict of the late George GADEN, Esq.,
formerly of St. John's, merchant, and mother of G.C. GADEN, Esq.,
Sheriff of this District. Her funeral took place at St. Paul's
Church on Sunday, 17th, and was numerously and most respectably
attended. The remains of the departed lady are deposited in the
family vault on the north-side of the main entrance to the church.
1852 Died on Sunday, December 12, after a long illness,
Bertram, son of the Rev. Bertram JONES, Episcopal clergyman of
Harbor Grace, in the 3rd year of his age.
1852 Died on Tuesday, December 14, after a short
illness, Charles, son of the late Mr. Nicholas PAYNE of Harbor
Grace, aged 17 years.
1854 Died on Saturday evening, June 10, in the 74th
year of his age, Thomas DANSON, Esq., Senior Police Magistrate, for
many years a leading merchant in this district, and the last of a
respectable family which had been established at Harbor Grace for
nearly a century. The deceased, through the course of a long life,
earned for himself the reputation of an honest man, and in all his
decisions on the Bench, his judgement was invariably guided by a
strong sense of justice and a conscientious desire to do what was
right. The funeral obsequies took place at 3 p.m. on June 14.
1857 Died on the morning of May 19, after a short
illness, Maria, wife of the Rev. Alexander ROSS, Minister of the
Scotch Free Presbyterian Church, Harbor Grace.
1859 Died at Harbor Grace on Wednesday, August 24, Mr.
Henry RUTHERFORD, merchant, a native of Roxburshire, Scotland, aged
37 years.
1861 Died at Harbor Grace on Monday, January 21, after
a short but painful illness, Mr. Jeremiah BRODERICK, aged 39 years,
leaving a wife and a young family to deplore the loss of a kind
husband and an affectionate father. The deceased lost his life by
inflammation brought on by a cold caught in jumping overboard to the
rescue of the Captain of the "Marian Ridley".
1865 Died on board brig "Saxon", on his passage from
New York to Harbor Grace, William, second son of Mr. Robert WALSH of
this Town, aged 25 years.
1877 Died on Saturday, January 27, after a short
illness, Captain Samuel GORDON, in the 64th year of his age.
1879 Died at Riverhead on January 12, after a brief
illness, Mary, relict of the late Edward SHANNAHAN, aged 84 years.
Deceased was a native of County Kilkenny, Ireland, and a resident of
Harbor Grace for over 60 years.
1883 In its issue of May 12, 1883, the STANDARD wrote:
"We record today the death of three very old, much respected and
well known inhabitants of Harbor Grace, whose united ages reach the
sum of 260 years: Mr. Patrick KELLY, Mr. William POWER and Mr. John
SINNOTT. The two first-mentioned were the fathers-in-law respect-
ively of our esteemed townsman, Mr. C.L. KENNEDY and Mr. John HOGAN.
The family relatives and friends of the deceased have our warmest
sympathy."
1898 Captain Nicholas HANRAHAN died at Harbor Grace on
November 9, at the age of 80 years. In 1861 he brought in the
biggest load of seals ever landed from a sailing vessel, namely,
11,000, in the brig "Glengarry".
